fr At certain times of every school day one can view the swarms swelling along our hallways at L.M.H.S. The staff of the 1963 ECHOES has decided to design this yearbook around the theme of these swarms. PEOPLE. We hope you will enjoy our efforts as we try to depict the development and progress of those we view on the following pages. LEVITTOWN MEMORIAL HIGH SC 9 2 HOOL, LEVITTOWN, NEW YORK TABLE OF CONTENTS 7 Faculty and Administration 23 Seniors 71 Underclassmen 111 Activities 133 Sports 157 Advertisements This year the task of choosing a dedicatee was very difficult. But after cai-eful consideration the 1963 ECHOES staff is dedicating this 10th anniversary edi- tion to Mr. C. J. Matina. With his “Cheerio, old chap,” and his “Jot that down, Boswell,” Mr. Matina has captured the admiration of both the student body and the faculty here at L.M.H.S. Always sparkling with wit and humor, he has been a friend as well as a teacher to the people of L.M.H.S. So that we may better our cultural heritage Mr. Matina has imbued in us the language of our fore- fathers. Deeply devoted to the spirit of L.M.H.S. he can be seen, with his camera, at all school functions. We can consider him the “chief backbone” of the school news- paper “The Spotlight” of which he has been advisor for the past three years. In closing, we of the yearbook have but one thing to say. That being: “As we raise our glass of milk on high we toast this 10th anniversay edition of ECHOES to you—Mr. Matina!” 4 7 Dear Class of 1963: The present state of the world, with its pleasures and problems, achievements and afflictions, world-wide wonders and woes, may be traced to the activities and efforts of people. . .many people. . .all people. For it is the people who make ultimate decisions in government, politics, industry, science and society. By nature, man is gregarious. He tends to be associated in groups - large and small. People make nations, people make cities, and people make communities. Without people, a bustling metropolis becomes a ghost town, progress in the arts an d sciences is non-existent and the stately symbols of man's mastery over his environment become mute monuments that, too, will soon disappear. To make up what we term people, takes numbers of individuals, each with personal thoughts, experiences and values, and each making significant contributions to the society. This year's graduating class is made up of individuals - each with much value and human worth. Collectively, they become the people of our nation, the defenders of our heritage, the builders of a better tomorrow. In our schools, your schools, and now, your alma mater, we have worked toward raising each person to the highest level of his individual abilities, we have attempted to direct each student in the areas where the most significant contributions to a democratic society may be made, we have tried to inculcate in each person the values, ideals, attitudes and philosophies inherent in the American way of life. i ii During these dark hours in the course of our country's destiny, we have the highest hopes for the future for we have put our faith in you, our nation's people, the citizens of tomorrow. I offer my best wishes for your success. Superintendent of Schools LOUIS BLUMBERG In a school system as vast as ours, the task of administrating it, is indeed a heavy one. In District No. 5, this duty fell to the Board of Education. The meetings were long and the work hard, but these praiseworthy representatives of our community have endeavored to meet the many difficulties they were faced with, and to raising the standard of education for the pupils of District No. 5. For these efforts on our behalf, we remain indebted to the Board of Education. Standing, from left to right, are: Mr. Eli Mellan, Mr. Harold Woodhull, Mr. Joseph L. Waldvogel. Seated, from left to right: Mr. Frank Wallace, Robert S. Hoshino, Mr. Robert Kissel, and Mr. Salvatore C. Gangi. As we give consideration to the peo- ple of this world we are, often times, too hasty in our decisions as to which ones are most important to us. Our unit of society is the family; this is true in all of our civilizations, either past or present. Hence it fol- lows that the most important people to us are the members of our family. Our very survival for the first twenty years of our lives is made possible in the home. Our concepts of right and wrong are developed here. Much of our for- mal and practical education comes from the interest and effort of family members. It would be impossible for us to measure what we owe our parents. Also it would be equally impossible to repay these obligations. Our only solution is for us to be determined that when we become heads of family units to do as well or better for our children. If such can be the case each generation will find the world a better place in which to live. who KNOWS AND UNDERSTANDS TPEO 3?UDE 10 Sincerely, Charles C. Jacobs Principal Living, as we do, in era of extremely rapid achievement as exemplified by man’s advancement in the control of space, in general scientific progress, and by a newly awakened critical appreciation for learning; it is indeed wise for us to pause occasionally in this rapid spiral of progress to take account of our own responsibilities as they pertain to this rapidly expanding universe. These responsibilities fall into three major categories: responsibilities to oneself, one’s family, one’s school and community. We must take cognizance of the fact that students in attend- ance at our elementary schools, high schools, colleges and universities today will become the leaders of tomorrow’s world. Therefore, prepare seriously for the burdens of leadership which are soon to be placed upon your shoulders, never losing sight of the value of trust in God and the period of serious reflection which should accompany every important decision that you are called upon to make. May the years which lie ahead bring you unending joy, happiness and satisfaction which re- sults from a job well done. As this tenth graduating class prepares to leave our school I realize that a great number of young people can call Levittown Memorial High School their Alma Mater. To the Class of 1963 I send my sincere wishes for a suc- cessful future. You are now part of a grow- ing number of alumni who will long be remembered. MR. BUTLER MR. MILLS F. ALPERT Nurse N. The class has sponsored many ac- tivities during this past school year, including the Senior Carnival, Senior Snack Bar, Class Trip, and the Senior Prom (which was a smashing success). We would like to commend this year’s senior officers on their enthusiastic school spirit and resulting achievements. 24 SENIOR CARNIVAL The Senior Carnival, which took place in December, was the product of many weeks of hard work by de- voted seniors. The theme of the Car- nival, which was Disneyland, was manifested by the presence of a Fan- tasyland, a Frontierland, and an Ad- ventureland. The participants were clothed in very original and appro- priate costumes. This fruit of weeks of labor was thoroughly enjoyed by both spectators and workers. 25 SENIOR 26 CANDIDS 27 RITA ABRAMSON Volleyball 9; F.T.A. 12; French Club 9; National Honor Society 12; Spotlight 9-12 SUSAN ARNOLD F.T.A. 11-12; Literary Club; Latin Club; Spotlight 11-12 DENNIS ANDERSON RAYMOND ANDREA 29 JOSEPH AYALA WALTER BAECHT Basketball 12; Tennis 11-12; Baseball 11-12 CLIFFORD BAYNON G.O. Under the excellent guidance of Mr. Hurley and the class officers, the Juniors planned and successfully finished many projects. Among the many accomplishments were the Junior-Senior basketball game, which was a close but exciting game. The Prom, Parisian Enchantment, was an event that the Class of ’64 will remember for many years to come. Leadership for this energetic group came from its officers: George Wanser, President; Coroline Kelly, Vice President; Sue Gendler, Record- ing Secretary; Corresponding Secretary, Terry Mills; Treasurer, Frank Mehm. With a good year behind them, the Class of ’64 looks forward to a terrific year. 72 JUNIOR PROM Prom Queen Kelly and Date The Junior Prom held on February 23, was a com- plete success. The theme the juniors chose was a Parisian Enchantment, a romantic theme which rep- resented a romantic mood. The Prom was by far the most artistically successful and fun filled event that the juniors have held this year. The transformation that made our gymnasium an original French Cafe was the result of hard work and mutual co-operation, of the spirited juniors. As the Court looks on Caro- lyn Kelly is crowned Queen. Their accomplishments could not have been made without the help of their advisor, Miss Loonam. SEVENTH GRADE COUNCIL The enthusiasm the class of ’68 displayed this year was truly distinctive. They can be well proud of the strong foundation upon which they have shaped their future. 98 CLASS CANDIDS MATH LIBRARY BIOLOGY HOMEMAKING 100 IN ACTION CRUSADERS 101 — ._______________ BOYS' GYM PWB EChne Robert Larson Jamie Fuller Liz Fratti Nancy Clarson Putting together a yearbook is hard work, harder than most people imagine. Our staff, consisting of Bob Larson, Editor-in-Chief; Jamie Fuller, Art Editor; Liz Fratti, Literary Editor; Beth Denehan, Advertising Editor; Barry Siegel, Dennis Shanley and Danny Wernick, Photography Editors; and Cherri Schaffer, every- one’s little helper, have displayed courage, hope and faith in a multitude of difficulties. The manifold problems, in the financial area of our year- book production, have been ably handled by Mr. LoTruglio, and Nancy Clarson, Business Editor. We express special gratitude to Mr. Alan Zacker for all the time and patience he has devoted to the cause. The main subject to discuss concerning the G.O. this year is their valiant efforts to acquire an auditorium for L.M.H.S. The subject of an auditorium has been bandied about for some time and this year’s G.O. decided to do something about it. Kei Saito, president of the G.O., presented the matter before the P.T.A. and our Board of Education reflecting the students’ great desire for an auditorium. This movement, greatly supported, led to the placing of a new auditorium for L.M.H.S. on the Ballot to be voted upon this April. L.M.H.S. owes a vote of thanks to this year’s General Organization for their efforts on our behalf. 114 Our G.O. in action. THE G. O. STORE A familiar sight in the G.O. store. The smiling face of Mr. S. Lerner is a familiar sight in our G.O. store. Mr. Lerner has happily supplied us with the many basic necessities needed during a school year, at a very reasonable price we may add. His “wares” go far beyond just school tools to stuffed animals, birthday gifts, and sportswear. It is well worth the time to visit the G.O. store. You may find something there you would never suspect, thanks to Mr. L. IIS Mr. Lerner and his assistants. Lonnie Klipstein Editor-in-chief David Unterman News Editor .. Perhaps the most important task is keeping the students aware of the activities of various school or- ganizations. Besides this and accurate news and sports coverage, the Spotlight contains inter- esting feature stories and the interviews of prominent teachers and students at L.M.H.S. But no matter how difficult the task, the staff makes the work into fun, as a peek into 106 in the afternoon can prove. This year, Lonnie Klipstein did an excellent job as Editor-in-Chief. Her staff included Dave Unterman, News Editor; Bill Lloyd, Sports Edi- tor; Gail Giles, Features Editor; Sharon Fried- man, Advertising Manager; and Maxine Lesser, Business Manager. And, of course, praise also goes to the workers on the Spotlight who con- tributed to the paper’s success. And last, and by far not the least, Mr. Carmen Matina, with- out whose initiative, guidance, and sense of humor the Spotlight could not have been published. rg Carmen J. This year’s Drama Club was newly organized under the supervision of Dr. John Lovell. The club staged three highly successful performances of “See How They Run” and has plans for the pro- duction of “Romeo and Juliet” next year. 118 ART CLUB L.-R.: N. Pedersen, J. Crooks, J. Colucci, V. Barry, Mr. Weiss, J. Finnerty, C. Louizos. The Art Club under the supervision of Mr. R. Weiss provided an outlet for the talents of the artists of L.M.H.S. Meeting after school, this group studied the finer points of painting and design. They explored new techniques and did much to further art appreciation in the school. LATIN CLUB The mighty Romans The Festum Romanum was the highlight of the year for the Latin Club. Under the excellent leadership of Mr. Hugh O’Donnell this group of students put on a “Festum” the likes of which no Roman has ever seen. Authentic costumes were a must, as well as “Roman” food and “Barbarian” games. This feast has been held annually and this year was the best by far. 119 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The Levittown Memorial Chapter of the National Honor Society again this year aided the school in varied ways. Highlighting its activities was a very successful repeat performance of the annual book fair. Headed by Kenneth Kleitman, president; Albert Sherlock, treasurer; and James Statler, secretary, and guided by faculty advisor Mr. John Halligan, the society continues its tradition of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. As, in past years, new members were officially admitted in an impressive induc- tion ceremony at which Mr. Edmund Butler delivered the invocation and Mr. Charles Jacobs and Mr. Donald Mills praised the goals of the organization. It is expected that the newly inducted members will carry on with dignity the services that have been extended by those who are now graduating. 120 Seated, left to right: B. Fountain, E. Kipling, R. Above the roar, as the teams are rooted on to victory, can be heard the pulse of a school’s enthusiasm. Stepping smartly this year’s band, ably led by Mr. East, performed proudly and well expressing all the excitement of people in action. Under the expert leadership of Mr. J. Rosenblatt the orchestra has made great advancements. It has quadrupled its size in this past year, two highly successful concerts were performed and a very informative trip to the N.Y.U. workshop was made. We are sure that next year’s orchestra will be even more successful than this year. Congratulations to Mr. Rosenblatt for his fine achievements this year. Besides helping students locate and take out books, the members checked the shelves, mended and marked books, and helped process new books for circulation. The main objective of the Yorker Club is to enrich them in the knowledge of New York State. The club participated in field trips during the year but the highlight of this year was the trip to Albany. Along with their advisor Mr. DeVirgilis, a select group went on this trip to participate in a state-wide convention and competition. They have worked toward this goal all year and we wish them luck. 131 0 133 sity Out on the football field or in the gymnasium, the Varsity cheer- leaders, assisted by their advisor Miss Mary Loonam, have done much to promote and direct enthusiasm of the students in school spirit and good sportsmanship. Richie Capria and Mike Kaminski each contributed exciting long touchdown runs in the neighbor- hood rivalry game with the Blue Dragons. Butch Ednie added the extra point that gave Memorial its 19-18 victory. Led all season by co-captains Capria and Coccaro, the Panthers also overpowered MacArthur, Ber- ner, Lynbrook, and East Rockaway. Head coach Nick Balitsos together with his assistant Alan Chase led this year’s squad which com- piled the second best record in the history of L.M.H.S. 136 J.V. FOOTBALL The J.V. Rebounding and scoring strength under the backboards was provided by co-captain Richard Capria and juniors Greg Donaldson, Michael Greaves, and Jeff Shaw. Senior playmakers Dan McGrade and David Kotler rounded out the squad in the backcourt. 142 Levittown Memorial’s Varsity bowling team is composed of seven members. Only five members can participate at one time. The starting five this year were Mike Kramer, captain, John Tierney, Jim Wrocklage, Mike Esposito, and Bruce Miller. This year Memorial had an exceptionally promising team headed by a great coach, Mr. Robert Noble. Although the team got off to a rather slow start, they were murdering the alleys towards the end of the season, and finished in second place in a tough section. John Tierney this season achieved a high league game of 268, high league series 701, and last of all, high average 185. Seated, L.-R.: Jay Cohen, Jim Wrocklage, Capt.
