“
You, the members of the student body, to whom this yearbook belongs, are the build- ing blocks” of the future. You will be the citizens who will shape the destiny of our nation and of our world. Fasten your eyes on the future and on the shape of things to come. Inevitably some of us will play major roles and others minor roles in the construction of the future. But both major and minor roles will be indispensable to a stable and secure world to come. This future world with its hopes and promises, and the SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME, is the theme around which the staff of this yearbook has designed the ECHOES of 1961. TABLE OF CONTENTS Dedication Administration and Faculty Seniors Underclassmen Clubs, Organizations and Activities Sports Events Advertisements ECHOES LEVITTOWN, NEW YORK 1961 _____ This year, as in the past, the'staff of Echoes has chosen to dedicate the yearbook to a member of our faculty. We feel that in this small way we can recognize and thank someone who has constantly and dedicatedly served the student body. Our current dedicatee is liked, respected, and well-known throughout Levittown Memorial High School. All those who attend school functions, especially interscholastic sport programs, are familiar with the friendly smile of Mr. Robert Noble. In the brisk cool of the football season he can be seen selling tickets and cheering on the team. When basketball season begins, he is active again, this time in the capacity of official scorekeeper. For many years he has given his valuable time and inexhaustible efforts to the success of the varsity baseball and bowling teams. As chairman of the Mathematics Department for all his eight years in L.M.H.S., Mr. Noble has done much to improve and expand the course offerings of the depart- ment. Through his enthusiastic efforts and fine instruction, interested students make great progress in both analytical geometry and calculus. For your instruction, your guidance, and your tireless energy, we the students of Levittown Memorial High School, in appreciation and tribute, dedicate to you, Mr. Robert Noble, the Echoes of 1961. Time was, a generation or so ago, when the shape of thing to come could be envisioned within fore- seeable, comprehensible bounds. Young men and women, in the more predictable world of yesterday, could set their sights for the future with some sense of security. The Class of '61, by comparison, faces a world of which, during its school days, has burst forth with scientific discover)', automation, atomic power and the conquest of space. We find before us, suddenly, whole new frontiers. Predicting the shape of things to come becomes far more complicated in a world of rapid change. To- day’s graduate can be certain that he shall live much differently, work at undreamed of variations from today's vocations and enjoy experiences which vary unbelievably from all past history of man. Like the frontier generations of the past, your new world shall offer the potential to lift mankind to new heights. All of your intelligence . . . and all the training you can get . . . shall be needed by those who wish to find their vital place in the new way of life of tomorrow. May each member of the Class of 1961 find himself ready to face the changes and challenges of this new shape of things to come.” As you reach into the unknown but glorious potential of new days, may your contribution be one which fulfills long dreamed of goals ... for yourself . . . and for your fellow man. .FRED AMBELLAN As our school year comes to a close, it is only appropriate that we give our thanks to the School Board of District 5. These guardians of our education deserve every possible tribute for their efforts to provide the best possible education for all of us. Their meritorious service is greatly appreciated by the Community and Levittown Memo- rial High School. Left to Right c T Standing: Robert Hoshino, Arthur Norgren, Edwin McCausland, Robert Kissel. Seated: Eli Mellan, Esther Siegel, Salvatore Gangi. SCHOOL BOARD 9 CHARLES C. JACOBS, Principal t Your theme, The Shape of Things to Come,’’ is well chosen. There never has been a time in history when the world has had so many and such critical problems. You cannot possibly avoid facing these with your fellow citizens. These problems involve: (1) The increased birth rate beginning with 1947 which will call for a tremendous increase in employable people on and after 1965. (2) Crowded schools in high school and college. (3) Outer space exploration and travel. (4) The awakened Asia and Africa. No one can predict the outcome of these pressing issues. No one knows the special training or experience needed to assure us the best possible Shape of Things to come.” Your best and perhaps your only way to partici- pate in your lifetime will be to make every effort to live each day as complete- ly and as responsibly as you can. This always has been the finest preparation for tomorrow and there is every reason to believe that it will serve us well at this time. Our world looks to its youth with hope and confidence that it will bring about an even finer place in which to live. Mr. Edmond Butler, one of our two Assistant Principals, has been at Levittown Memorial High School since its establishment in 1952. At first he came as an English teacher but a short time later he rose to the position he now occupies. During this time he has shown a tremendous interest in student activities and the future of the student body. Each day, Mr. Butler has warmly started off the day with the morning exercises and announce- ments. With his display of interest and concern, he has greatly contributed to our lives. Mr. Donald Mills, our new Assistant Principal, is a popular figure around Levittown Memorial High School. He has always shown a deep interest in school activities. This year, even with the additional duties of his present position, he finds time to actively maintain his concern for each individual in the school, and has often helped solve a student’s problem. There will always be a place for him in our memories for all he has contributed to Levittown Memorial. NICHOLAS BALITSOS B.S., M.A. Physical Education GUIDO AGOSTINI B.A., M.S. Ne Plus Ultra—THE UT- MOST—is the perfect epithet for this year’s graduating class. Ever since it entered L.M. H.S. in 1958, the Class of '61 has won acclaim through its superior leadership and its unique ideas. This year the Class of ’61 has reached its peak. The Senior Carnival, where Orient met Occident, was an over- whelming success. The trip to Washington was delightful chaos, as expected. Naivete gave way to sophistication at the Senior Prom in the luxurious Huntington Town House. This is our Class of ’61: A group in which each individ- ual is able to express himself and use his talent for the bene- fit of the class as a whole. 27 Henry Brook Adams once wrote, A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” Mr. Hugh O'Donnell, who has been advisor to the class of '61 since it entered L.M.H.S., has influenced us all. He has given his time, his wisdom, and his effort to help the Seniors, as a class and as individuals, to succeed. He laughs and jokes with us, but he also understands and firmly guides us. You have helped to mold the shape of things to come, Mr. O'Donnell. The Class of ’61 thanks you. 28 Starting the year off with a bang,” the Senior Class of 1961 presented the most successful carnival in L.M.H.'s history. This Oriental Fantasy” in- cluded a Casbah, a slave market, and a fortune tell- er. As usual, the marriage booth did a tremendous amount of business. However, the dart booth, which had pictures of teachers for targets, offered stiff competition for the Senior Preacher.” FAVORITES MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Marjorie Sussman, Douglas Gibson BEST LOOKING Claudia Byrd, Richard Beekman MOST SCHOOL SPIRIT Lillian Caparell, A1 Hoppe MOST POPULAR Josephine Signorelli, A1 Garber FAVORITES MOST TALENTED Arlene Edelman, Haydn Slomack BEST DRESSED Diana Genna, Dennis Foley WITTIEST Gloria Russo, John Carey BEST ATHLETES Ilene Tetenbaum, Frank Curtin LESLIE PHYLLIS ABEL ANN MARIE ADAMEC JOHN ALGERI Band 10, 11; Drama 10. 11; Spotlight G.O. Under the leadership of Mr. Philip Scinto, advisor, and Robin Carpenter, presi- dent, the Juniors have undertaken many responsibilities, and have suc- cessfully fulfilled them all. The Junior-Senior Basketball Game boasted a record attendance. The Junior Prom was truly Some Enchanted Evening.” Also success- ful were the traditional Junior-Senior Dinner, and the Sunrise Break- fast at Jones Beach. It is not surprising that the Junior Class has accomplished so much this year. President Robin Carpenter, Vice President Lynn Brown, Sec- retary Donna Sandak, and Treasurer Linda Ray are fine and effective leaders. With a good record upon which to base its future endeavors, the Class of ’62 looks toward its senior year with high expectations and promise. 84 Mr. Philip Scinto Advisor 1962 JUNIOR COUNCIL Front Row. l-r: C. The Class of ’62 has proved it- self unique by being the first class to hold its prom in the school gym. The Juniors themselves decorated the gym in a lovely South Pacific motif. Some Enchanted Evening” it was—especially when Queen Lynn Brown and her court were crowned. The excitement and romance of the Junior Prom could not have been equalled. The mood, music, and setting created a beautiful Pacific paradise for our Juniors’ gala evening. JUNIOR Jo Signorelli, last year’s Junior Prom Queen, crowns Queen Lynn Brown as Lynn’s escort. With Mrs. Robillard as their ad- visor, the officers and a Sophomore Council of 30 have worked diligently toward achiev- ing their goals. Their activities this year were highlighted by the memorable Sophomore Boat Trip which included a picnic at Bear Mountain. President Mike Levinson, Vice President Marlene Levine, Secretaries Ronnie Casper and Clair Kenien, and Treasurer Dan McGrade not only have contributed to their class, but also have encouraged others to contribute. Our Sophs can boast of the achievements they have made as a class. They can also be proud of the many individuals among them who have excelled. Though small in number, the class has already achieved many of its goals. A Freshman ice skating party, held early in De- cember, was so successful that it was immediately followed by the Snowball Twirl in January. 108 (L-R): Nancy Durr, George Wanser, Terry Mills, Sue Regan, Carolynn Kelly. CLASS President Carolynn Kelly, Vice President Terry Mills, Secretaries Frank Mehm and Nancy Durr, Treasurer George Wanser, and Historian Susan Re- gan have given tremendously of themselves, and have provided superior leadership throughout the year. The first, and perhaps hardest, year of high school is now ended for the Class of ’64. Proud of their achievements thus far, the Freshman Class looks eager- ly towards the future. COUNCIL Back, L to R: George Wanser, Joyce Lambert, Judy Alzance, Francis Meims. Front, L to R: Sue Regan, Terry Mills, Barbara Dommermuth, Carolyn Kelly. 109 The eighth graders at L.M.H.S. have earned a reputation well worth pride. During this year they have worked together to better themselves and to contribute to their school. The square dance sponsored dually by the seventh and eight graders, and the fun-filled eighth grade picnic highlighted tire class’s activities this year. These accomplishments could not have been made without the help of Mr. Richard Hawk- ey, their patient and understanding advisor. At this time our eighth graders await next year, with enthusiasm, for they have built a strong foundation upon which to shape their futures. Left-Right: M. Robillard, W. Schuey, L. Hunt, C. Gabrysiak. L.M.H.S. boasts a loyal and active Seventh Grade Class, which has continually turned out en masse to participate actively and spiritedly in all school functions. The class, advised by Mr. Vito Merola, spent the past year organizing itself and establishing the pattern which it will follow in the next five years at Levittown Memorial. If it maintains the enthusiasm it has displayed this year, the class of ’66 will truly be distinctive. Left-Right: D. Spitz, S. Adams, O. Tartakow, E. Daniels, M. Clarfeld. O. of ’60-’6l included a Thanksgiving bundle drive for the needy; a G. O. variety show whose profits went toward adopting” a family in need; and the sale of hearts on Valentine’s Day and shamrocks on St. Pat- rick’s Day, for the G. O. scholarship fund. We of L.M.H.S. are confident that the future will surely re- flect the fine qualities which are already evident in our industrious G. O. Representatives. Rear (L-R): R. Broder, S. Bitel, L. The successful Book Fair book insurance, and a Welcoming Dance for the seventh graders were among its numerous projects and functions. Under the guidance of its advisor, Mr. Thomas Rowan, and president Elizabeth Sucher, this group upheld the ideals of the organization—scholarship, service, leadership, and character. As in past years, new members were officially admitted to the Honor Society during an impressive can- dlelight induction ceremony. Mr. Edmond Butler gave the invocation and Mr. Charles Jacobs and Mr. Donald Mills spoke of the high aims of the organization. A representative of the Phi Beta Kappa Alumni of Long Island presented an award for the highest four year scholastic average. The Industrial Cooperative Pro- gram makes use of the industrial facilities in the community and surrounding areas. These facil- ities serve as training shops and work laboratories. Students en- rolling in this program obtain supervised on the job training through part time employment. The coordinator also conducts daily classes in subject materi- al directly related to the train- ees’ on the job training. Students are visited on the job by a co- ordinator who checks to see if working conditions are safe, fair and pleasant, and whether training progress is being made. Front Row: E. Zygorsky, R. The German Club was organized this school year with ambitious designs. Under the advis- orship of Mrs. Carol Maguire, the club worked to give students an insight into the culture of German speaking peoples. Plans included corresponding with German pen pals, invit- ing guests to lecture on various aspects of Ger- man culture and holding a Deutsches Best. Leading their fellow classmates in broaden- ing their learning were Warren Karp, presi- dent, Marjorie Sager, vice president, Dorothy Willner, secretary-treasurer, and John Hughes, parliamentarian. Our thanks to the language department for making these extracurricular activities avail- able to the student body. Front Row: S. Baeder, J. Puskas, D. Willner. Back Row: B. Aranow, J. Hughes, N.
