Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1958 volume:

We are living at a time when the heavens seem to be within our reach; yet men are awed by the majesty of its mysterious vastness. Destiny has placed in our hands the fate of a world and the gateway to the uni- verse. Greatness can be ours, if we but reach out and take it. May we have the imagination to dream of complete fulfillment, the fortitude to make that dream a reality, and the wisdom and faith to build a fruitful and satisfactory future on this reality. LEVITTOWN c ru ncr i i ii ii i Ll ULJ We, the Senior Class of Levittown Memorial High School feel it important to pay tribute to a man whose warm personality has left upon us a lasting impression. He has taken time to consider and discuss our problems, coaxed us into action, laughed at our jokes and shared in our disappointments. He has been both friend and guide. It is with deep respect and lasting affection that the grad- uating class of 1958 dedicates its yearbook to you, Mr. Russo. DEDICATION ADMINISTRATION Dear Students. The Class of 1958, more than any group which has preceeded it, faces new challenges and invitations. Science has so rapidly ventured into new frontiers of space that intelligence and education have become more important than ever before. To you comes the challenge to understand this changing world, and the invitation, as a member of tomorrows generation of leaders, to forge forward in the discovery and control of new frontiers. No one could have a better opportunity to view and share in this pageant of history in the making than a member of your graduation class. May your contribution to tomorrow and your rewards for service be high. Fred Ambellan Superintendent Mr. Fred Ambellan Superintendent of Schools Mr. Charles Jacobs Principal Dear Friends, You are facing and will continue to face a more difficult world than seniors have for the past decade. There will be much keener competition for college entrance, college work will be more difficult, and your future employers are to be more exacting. When one knows in advance of an approaching problem he can prepare himself. What can you do to meet this increased challenge? Most people fail in their occupation because they do not begin to put forth effort that is equal to their ability. You may be assured that you have the ability, the previous training and all other prequisite qualities. No one can stop you from the success you desire if you have sincere determination to attain that success. Almost without exception you find the successful person has reached his objective more because of interest and determina- tion than ability. Sincerely yours, Charles C. Jacobs Principal At the head of the yearbook staff was one of the leading seniors of Levittown Memorial High, Editor-in-Chief, Ellen Furedi. Writing for “Echoes” occupied a good deal of Joan Glickman’s time, as she was Literary Editor of the yearbook. The world awaits you, seniors. f Left to Right—Dove Abrams; Vice President, Mr. Robert Schwartz; advisor, Sandy Brown; treasurer, Carol Wostnick; secretary, Mrs. George Russo; advisor, Joel Weissman; President. The Senior Class of L.M.H.S. was the pace setter of the school. It can be said that the class of '58 sparkles with personality, wit, and good fellowship. The first of many successful enterprises was the Senior Carnival, designed to raise funds for “Echoes ' With the indispensable aid of Mr. Russo and Mr. Schwartz, many new and original ideas entered into the activities of the Senior Class. One of the most successful of these endeavors was the Snack Bar managed by Susan Lapidus, which sold candy, pretzels, and potato chips to the hungry students and teachers after school. The profits from the Snack Bar were used to buy a gift for the school and to adopt an orphan. The ambitious Seniors planned and organized the tremendous Senior week during which a gala Senior-Junior spaghetti dinner was held in honor of the graduating class. Seniors and teachers exchanged roles to the merriment of participants and viewers alike. In mid-season a much enjoyed skating party was organized providing a good time for all who attended. The Mr. Cupid award went to that lovable fellow, Joel Weissman, at the Valentines Day dance, “A Date with Cupid. Working hard to acheive these successes were the Senior Class officers, President Joel Weissman, Vice President, Dave Abrams, Secretary, Carol West- rick, Treasurer, Sandy Brown. This success was due to the cooperation and hard work of many of the Junior class members under the leadership of Dennis Dennerlein, Prom Chairman. The enthusiastic juniors also held a number of fund raising campaigns such as a Snowball Dance, Cake Sales, and a sale of school station- ery in order to finance their prom. To climax a year marked by tremendous activity the juniors gave the senior class a gala Spaghetti Dinner. President Lenny Kershaw, Vice President, Grace Califano, Treasurer, Denny Dennerlein and Secretary, Charlotte Lichtenthal all did ad- mirable jobs. Left to Eight: Charlotte Lichtenthal, Secretary; Lenny Kershaw, President; Dennis Dennerlein, Treasurer; Grace Califano, Vice President. 66 JUNIOR PROM The attractive court above consisted of the fol- lowing girls: Sue Fish, Barbara Olbers, Grace Califano, Jeannie Kleitman, Jo Popolizio, Phyllis Ruggier, and the lovely queen at the left Barbara Ostovich. She is being crowned by last year’s queen, Sandy Brown. SOPHOMORE CLASS Left to Right: Eunice Claro, Secretary; Jamie Schloss, President; Carol Doyle, Vice President; Sally Burnside, Treasurer. This year’s Sophomore class worked toward its goals with all the fire and fervor of high school students on their way to the top. Under the capable supervision of Mr. William Lenihan and the leadership of the four officers: Jamie Schloss, President; Caryle Doyle, Vice President; Eunice Claro, Secretary and Sally Burnside, Treasurer, the class launched its two major activities, a Christmas dance, The Flake Shake, and the annual Sophomore picnic, held at Heckscher State Park. The ever-busy Sophomores contributed to each event at Levittown Memorial High School. 68 i ♦ 4 Left to Right: Wendy Thompson. Secretary; Adele Smiros, Vice President; Dick Louison. President; Florence Hershberger, Treasurer; Mr. Hamm. Advisor. Our G.O., the pulse of the school, has represented the student body in its wishes since its origin four years ago. It has obtained for the students many privileges, such as juke box, senior privileges, and the G.O. Recreation Center. The many committees have functioned to bring about popular improvements in recreation, in cafeteria, and in school rules. This year we have enjoyed the basketball and foot- ball games sponsored by the General Organization under the direction of Mr. Hamm. Contributing many hours of their time, the G.O. officers kept things running smoothly and efficiently. They were Dick Louison, President; Adele Smiros, Vice President; Wendy Thompson, Secretary; and Florence Hershberger, Treasurer. 72 G. O. RECREATION COMMITTEE The Teen Center, Recreation dancing, swimming parties and all those things that go towards making school fun, were provided for the Levittown Students by the recrea- tion committee under Chairman Gerry Rahner and Advisor Mr. Leon Shapiro. This year’s Spotlight staff, led by Char- lotte Pavilonis, Editor-in-Chief, Jackie Reading, Feature Editor, and Fred Meyer, News Editor, has worked diligently to keep the student body well informed on the news and views of the school. The big item of interest was the Columbia Press conference in which the Spotlight took first place among other high schools in the United States. This year the paper inducted the first Levittown Memorial High School chapter of Quill and Scroll, an honorary journalism fraternity. The four qualities necessary for membership were scholarship, leadership, character and service. At the first official meeting the new officers were elected: Florence Hershberger, President; Ellen Furedi, Vice President; Barbara Johnson, Secretary; and Martha Schneider, Treasurer. This hard-working group has contributed much to Levittown Memorial High School: a tutoring service, newspaper distribution and the unique book insurance plan. NATIONAL SCHOOL SAFETY COUNCIL Left to right—Alice Schmidt; Mr. Chasnov (adviser); Allen Prcssei- sen; Silva Lowenfels; Harriet Goldberg. ART CLUB This busy little group will, in the end, turn out art work, well worth the time. Senior Band Cheering the boys on to victory during the football season, rousing the student body to a mood of excitement during a pep rally, our school band, kept on their toes by daily practice periods, did beautifully under the direction of Mr. Lutri. Golden Chords The Golden Chords have graced many a stage this year, under the fine direction of Miss Golab. The melodies which they sang gave special meaning to the Honor Society Induction among other performances. G.C. ETTES First Row: Janice Lloyd, Joy Black, Phyllis Carollo, Doreen McCarthy, Barbara Hurley, Carole McAfee, Roseanne De Betta, Miss Golab, Advisor; Second Row: Alice Brun- ton, Elizabeth Bullett, Diane Fox, Gail Tolley, Veronica Wilde, Marcia Israelson, Joanne Mirabella, Wendy Thompson. The orchestra has been a group in our school which has steadily grown in size and performance, thanks to its well- versed advisor, Mr. Berk. ORCHESTRA BATON TWIRLERS In their sparkly red, white, and gold costumes, our baton twirlers stand poised and pert. Mr. Lutri has come up with another winner! ARSENIC A “The gentleman died because he drank some wine with poison in it,” Abby stated matter-of-factly. ‘Why yes,” said her sister, Martha “we put it in the wine, because when it’s in the tea it has a distinct odor.” Abby and Martha Brewster are two lovely, old Victorian ladies whose favorite charity is giving elderberry wine, spiked with arsenic, to old men, in order to send them to their peace. Teddy, another of the Brewster clan, thinks he is Teddy Roosevelt and is forever yelling, “Charge!” Brother Jonathan is the killer of twelve men. The touch of romance is offered by Mortimer, who seems to be the only sane member of the Brewster family, and Elaine Harper, who pursues him ardently. The hilarious play, under the excellent professional direction of Mr. Eugene Cas- sassa, was a success from beginning to 88 end. ) OLD LACE Directed by Mr. Eugene Cassassa Aunt Abbey Joyce Cohen, Jacqueline Reading Aunt Martha Helene Lefkowitz, Wendy Thompson Elaine Harper Alice Brunton, Gale Zimmerman Rev. The boys scramble to score that touchdown. Showing tremendous speed, hustle and skill, Levittown’s Varsity team, this year, turned in the best football record in our school history. Chalking up a fine 5 won, 2 lost, 1 tied series, they were led by quarterback Mike Dill, who, as Coach Nicholas Balitsos says, “held the team together and made them click.” Other outstand- ing players were Joe Meehan, Norman Urban, Richard Drolet, James Clody, Bill Curtin, Dan Hennessey, and Don Clement. The team was excellently coached by Mr. Balitsos and his assistants Mr. A1 Chase, Mr. Jim Costa and Mr. Clement Kaye. J. V. FOOTBALL First Row: Henry Orloff, Stuart Perga- ment, Terry Benz, Ransom Widmer, Clement Kaye, Coach; Bill Weinman, Paul Smith, A1 Hafner. Bob Sandler, Bob Blum, Teddy Perfetti. Varsity Basketball There is no doubt that this year’s basketball team was the finest in the history of our school. Doing an excellent job in what was probably the toughest league in Nassau County, the team raced to the top, capturing first place in the S.S.A.L., section three, and scoring a 14-4 regular season, including first place in the annual Christmas Holiday Tournament. They were coached and inspired by Coach Mr. Larry Desimone, who succeeded in weaving the team into a well- trained, aggressive, and sportsmanlike unit. Rewarded for their fine performances during the season were co-captain, John Hock (Sunday News All-Nassau First Team) and co-captain Bill Curtin and Gene Flamm (Sunday News Honorable Mention). Play-maker Mike Dill and steady Ed Sierra played well and deserve great praise. The never-daunted vim, vigor and vitality of these boys made a team which Levittown will never forget. Up in the air is Gene Flamm, star pivot man, who sinks another basket against Island Trees. J. V. BASKETBALL First Row: James Draus, Henry Schroeder, Nick Balitsos, Coach; Frank Mass, William Linn, Terry Benz. Second Row: Terry Tobey, Barry McMichael, Ben Stark, Harmon Cohen, Richard Bowers, Bill Weinman, Paul Smith, A1 Kurtz, Marty Marty Rosenberg, Fred Kemp, Steve Keller. First Row: Jim Dugan, Lenny Kanarvogel. Bob Rovinsky, Jeff Clair, Dave Hersh- berger. Second Row: Jonathan Bouch. Douglas Warren, John Columbia, George Miller, Dennis Rafferty, Igor Varga Galavcscnko, Pat Monagahan, Howie Taylor. V A Coordinated for streamlined play are these swiftfooted boys on the outstanding soccer team. They have well deserved their standing of second place in their division. Captain John Columbia along with Bill Lynch were chosen for the All- Scholastic Soccer Team for their outstanding abliity. Coached by Mr. Anthony Di Benedetto, the boys contributed greatly towards building school morale. v V. TRACK Levittown's track team completed the 58—$9 season in fine style. Sparked by outstanding performances by Ed Sierra (440-880 yd.), Ricky Drolit (discus, shorput), Mike Saltzer (100-220 yd.), Preston Singer (mile), and John McChesney (pole vault), the Panthers won several victories. The close cooperation exhibited by Co-Captains Richie Drolet and Ed Sierra was very helpful to the team's organization. This group was skillfully coached by Mr. Fred Miranda and Mr. Ed Donnelly. CROSS COUNTRY Each day this spring those boys were seen exercising to make their bodies fit for the grueling task of running. First Row: Preston Singer E. F. Donnelly, Coach; Ed Sierra. Second Row: David Keller, Steve Keller, Richard Stagg, Grayson Buckner. Paul Vandelaske. WRESTLING First Row: Bill Rourke, Wade Hullings, Lenny Kershaw. Alan Chase, Coach; Mike Ross, George Miller, A1 Hofner. Larry Graham. Second Row. Bob Laviano, Joe Lavery, Mike Klein, Bobby Del- monte, Tony Moors, John Haas, Martin Weitzman, Michael Saltzer. Ken Chorney. Arthur Katz. Dave Monelt, John Ellis, Howie Miller, Paul Murphy, Mike Dclmontc. Third Row: Dick Louison, Dick Lulkin, Harvey Weinberg, Ken Vanderlaske, Pat Ryan, Bill McCormick, Paul Vicinaza, Joe Bruck. Levittown’s matmen, although not on the winning side too often, nevertheless provided good wrestling and sportsmanship. Their record of three wins and nine losses does not adequately show the true strength of the team. Without several injuries and a little more experience they would have had a much finer record. Outstanding for Levittown’s wrestling team was Dick Louison, who during the regular season, had a 7-2 record. Mr. A1 Chase, who took over the reins as coach this year, did a really fine job of coaching the team into a well-rounded unit. ' S' The Levittown Panthers baseball team this year un- doubtedly fielded one of the strongest nines on the Island. As this book goes to press our club is in second place and gunning for the league leading Baldwin Team. The seven wins against two losses is due to the fine pitching and clutch hitting which was backed up by brilliant defensive play giving the opposition but few runs. Coach Bob Noble complements the entire roster and particularly the big bats of Curtin and Fogel, the fine defensive play of Blum and Kurtz, and the superb pitching of Dill and Curtin. BOWLING The lanes were really jumping this year as Levittown’s finest keglers soared to victory after victory, capturing the top prize — first place. First Row: Barry Goodman, Bernie Potoff, Richard Sosnowski. Second Row: Tom Wright, Bob Rome, Richard Kuhn, Len Katz. TENNIS First Row: Dick Louison, Robert Schwartz, Coach; Mark Ramce, Captain; Mike Orber. Second Row: Bruce Rothman, Bernie Pot- ofT, Henry Thomas, Jerry Katell, Terry Tobey. LEVIT MEMORIA Right to Left: Grace Cali fano, Sue Fish, Joanne Robillard, Betsy Davis, Irene Rodolakis, Jeannie Klietman, Barbara Olbers, Fran Fanelli. Sparkling, vivacious and full of that good old Levittown spirit are the girls in red, white and black ... our cheerleaders. Their enthusiasm, reflected the faces of the happy throng, cheered our teams on to victory. Miss Agnes Golab and Miss Annette Passi can well be proud of the girls who have given us such a fine squad this year. With good sportsmanship and strong lungs these girls set the pace at each event. J. V. Left to Right: Judy Rovinsky, Becky Compton, Sue Dennis, Pat Hurley, Carol McAfee, Donna Miller, Linda Locffcl, Joyita Stovall. Carol Sandstedt, Carol Vainoris. GIRLS SPORTS VOLLEYBALL TEAM HOCKEY TEAM First Row: Angela DeSantias, Joan Geisinger, Gussic Friscia, Carol Granelli, Jennie Klcitman,, Flo Hershberger, Diane Jones. Second Row: Joanne Corrigan, Grace Califano, Mary Jane Marchlcvski, Sylvia Cotter, Sue Lapidus, Audrey Crane, Naomi Baumgarten, Fran Fanclli, Janet Nowotny, Barbara Olbers, Rita Render. The girls on the Honor Hockey Team take time out from the grueling sport in which they participate, to pose serenely for this picture.
