Rub your hand over the padded PYLON cover. See how smooth our hood is and how quietly our engine purrs. You have just climbed aboard our hot- rod called LULU, and together we will soar through the Year as we go Redding 'Round Leuzingerf' Our teachers signaled go when September rolled along. Busily and some- what anxiously we began learning after a pleasant but nostalgic summer. Detour, reads the sign as we chugg to a near halt. We have to proceed at a slow rate as our auditorium is undergoing remodeling. From May ot l955 through March ot 1956 we patiently awaited the day when we could resume our old route ot happy days of knowledge and tun in our auditorium haven. Though a sand and gravel strike delayed construction tor tive months, that beautiful and luxurious structure won our sighs when we proudly entered its halls tor the tirst time. As our engine builds up compression, we merrily scoot about- but not tor long. Once again we come to a halt to see why the route ot long traveled years is somewhat unfamiliar and strange. Two buildings so shiny and clean, loom ahead. Chemistry and Physics laboratories and the Home Economics and Art 1 a might have proven too strenuous tor a lesser person. four years, endeared her to the memory ot hundreds ot students. Department have found new quarters and are the cause for our concern and wonder. How cheerful our surroundings have become! Where to now? The road is blocked! Read the sign! School under con- struction. Eventually two new buildings will supplant the current location of this student parking lot which will be moved to land recently purchased south of the shop buildings. The PE. department is slated for a diving pool and a new library is to be erected between buildings l and 2. We are somewhat dazed at all that's new. However, we had better be on our way for Ianuary marks the flooded days. And the rains came so hard that our engine caught cold and kept us away from school for two days. Floods caused much hardship in our Lawndale community but Leuzinger put its gears in high and offered refuge to folks in need. Well, we still have a long way to go before our journey draws to a close. We, your PYLON chauffeurs, wish to say, iand we think you'll agreel we are proud to be a part of a school which keeps its pistons in trim, feeding educae tion to its youth and distributing inspiration to a community in time of need. Devoting much ol her time to the welfare of the students ot Leuzinqer High School and proving herself a woman ot great leadership and understanding is Doris M. Weary. In her twenty-one years of service to the school, she has been instrumental in bringing about many changes and improvements in the student body organization. Through Miss Weary's initia- tive, and with the support and counsel ol Mr. Rice, principal, the tall of 1944 witnessed the estab- lishment oi the present torm ot student government, embodying the Senate. As supervisor ot auditorium activities, she has done an unexcelled iob of coordination which Students will pleasantly recall the cheerful Mrs. Santa Claus that she has traditionally portrayed at our Christmas assemblies for the past Miss Weary, in her early years ot teaching at Leuzinger, taught English, Drama. and Speech. In 1947 she began her career as a counselor. Her enthusiasm. vigor and wise counsel has We, the Pylon stait, as a mark of our ailection and respect, dedicate this book to Doris M. With the recent survey as a guide, fourteen committees have been hard at work all year long evaluating our present curriculum and making recommendations to improve it. This can only result in a far better cur- riculum that will more nearly meet all the needs of our students. Getting back into our beautiful audi- torium made us all happy. To know that it is now re-built and safe is a comfort to all. v- ---- - f--- --H- Principal Planning for all the remainder of our new or re- modeled buildings has gone on constantly all year, and now some new construction will soon be under way. When all is completed Leuzinger will have a beautiful, adequate, well staffed and well equipped school for 2400 students that all of us can be very proud ot. All this takes the co-operation and help of par- ents, students, teachers, board of trustees and admin- istration, To all of you our sincere thanks. Big Wheels Xi if ff B. M. Galloway George W. STUDENT COURT, CONTROL FORCE AND ELECTION BOARD: Part oi the student government plan is the student court and control force. To build and understand the way real government works, the control force enforces the school rules and the student court brings to justice the violators of these rules. Made up of members from the Iunior Class, is our hard working election board. Managing reg- istration and election days are only a few of their responsibilities. The student government at Leuzinger we believe, is one of the best in Southern California and the Senate part of this organization does its share in living up to that reputation. The Senate is composed of 46 members, each person represent- ing a school club, including all officers elected by the student body. The biggest event of the year is the Senate sponsored, Sports Queen Parade. Patterned after the famed Rose Parade, almost every club enters a float and a candidate for Queen. Then comes the exciting Coronation Ball, where the Sports Queen is crowned by the student body president. Bay League Forums are another Senate project. All the high schools in the Bay League get together each quarter to discuss problems of mutual concern. The insight and knowledge that is gained is taken back to the respective schools. Planning the Christmas assembly, presented the Senate mem- bers with the complex job of getting together a program that would be able to operate under the handicap of no auditorium. The Senate did a grand job in overcoming this obstacle, resulting in an excellent Christmas Assembly held on the football field. Along with joyous festivities of the holiday season, the spirit of charity was remembered. With the cooperation of the House of Representa- tives, QOU stockings filled with food and toys were collected for Iuvenile Hall in Los Angeles. Second semester Senate sent delegates from the Senate and House to this year's California Association oi Student Council's Convention held in Fullerton. Representatives from the 16th district got together this semester to discuss ideas and problems concerning their individual schools. The biggest project that the Senate has been involved in has concerned the Whole school. The subject of Foreign Exchange Stu- dents has been on the minds of the whole student body. But, the Senate, with the cooperation of the House, has brought that dream into reality by beginning the fund raising campaign and getting the whole community interested in the project. 'Gauthier, League Representative, I. sentative. The Iunior Class under the fine leader- ship of Dave Page and his cabinet worked hard through the second semester. One of their biggest and most important jobs was planning the Iunior Prom, April In Paris, held April 7, l956 at the Leuzinger cafe- teria. For senior jackets and sweaters, they chose aqua and white, with a matching emblem designed by Kenneth Loranger. They also selected class rings that were delivered March 21 through the 23. The class advisors were Mr. Lockard and Mr. O'Neill. Secretaryg D. lohnston, Vice Treasurer, D. Godec, Boys' Traver, Girls' League Repre- IUNIORS, Row One: B. Corum, l. Craig, B. Crandall, S. This was the question asked of the friends and relatives of the seniors. Apparently the seniors are very good salespeople, as they cleared 55700 towards the Palladium Party. They also profited S10 from a cup cake sale. Under the leadership of Harold Murphy, the senior class held a special assembly in honor of Mr. Wetzler, their counselor for the past three years, when he left Leu- zinger, earlier this year. The class also selected the graduation announcements. The Senior Prorn comes under a special heading, and this year's dance was made extra special by the good planning of the Senior Cabinet of first semester. On Campus All the pancakes you can eat tor 5Oc, was the slogan for the Senior breakfast, the first project ot the second semester cabinet. The proceeds ot the breakfast went toward reducing the cost of the Palladium Party, held annually for seniors. Plans made by Dave Haden, senior class president, and his cabinet, gave birth to exciting senior activities, includ- ing Ditch Day, Senior Banquet, Gradua- tion, and the best Palladium Party that any Senior class has ever had. Lack of speed, along with costly penalties and mistakes, caused the defeats suffered. The defensive unit was excellent, and the line was one of the best in years. Good performances were turned in by all Olyrnps, but a lot of credit has to be given to smaller men like Hal Murphy and Ice Fisher. Putting in his first year in football, Richard Oddy turned in fine defensive work at left end. W With an average of 44 yards per try, Bob Urick excelled at the kicking post.
