He joined our school as a teacher in the social science de- partment and as Bee football coach. Mr. Barton found many new friends at Leuzinger and met many old friends as well, since he had come from ten years of teaching at Inglewood city schools and Hawthorne Elementary. He also had been active in such youth organiza- tions as Gunga Din, Boy Scouts, Jr. Optimists, and Jr. Kiwanis. The responsibilities of the boys' vice-principal were taken over by Mr. Bar- ton in February of l95l. During his stay here, he has inspired such enthusiasm and has been so helpful and understanding that he won the true friendship of students and teachers alike. . Under the quidance of Mr. Barton many students have found their school life more rewarding. And so to Mr. Barton we,proudIy dedicate this 1953 edition of the Py- lon. May his future years at Leuzinger be happy and successful. mm hy! f Il X fi W WELD J? YA 69 gy awww? X 2 6 9 X QF' . Sophomores By January the Sophomore Class was getting ready for its official debut, the traditional Sophomore Sweetheart Dance which is held annually around St. Valentine's Day. To be annuonced at the big affair was the name of the lucky Sophomore Sweetheart of '53 Class cabinets from both semesters collaborate to make this a really nice event for the sophs. Another event in the offing for the class was the Splatter-Platter Party, featuring swimming in the Leu- zinger pool and a dance in the cafeteria. At mid-term the sophs had shown that they were al- ways willing to support all school and class activities. Class counsellor was Mr. Beecher Fawcett. OI mp Cagers The close of the i953 basketball season found the Olympians in third place in Bay League standings. The Leuzinger five took first place in the Bay Shores Consolation Tournament, and their season totals gave them an I I-I2 record. The Blue and White quintet was paced by the scoring of all-League for- ward Hank Bojorquez, the floor work of Andy Marzich, the guarding of Pete Massey, the all-around play of Dave Irwin, and the inspiration of captain Tom Wadman. League champion Redondo gave the Olympians the most trouble, taking both meetings with Coach Roberts' cagers. Santa Monica also dumped the Leu- zinger five. The Olympians divided contests with Inglewood and Beverly Hills, and swept the Torrance series. Probably the most thrilling tilt of the season was the first meet with Ingle- wood, in which the locals took home a 42-39 victory, This was the first time the Sents had fallen to a Leuzinger hardwood team in I2 years. The most heartbreaking encounter was the 45-44 last minute loss to Beverly. . Harold Roberts E. if Qs. if ' ' fi' sxxif-0 . 'FN W '5 3 if an . guts. 1 ROW: D, lrwin, D. Chesmore, J. Long, T. Jim Mitchell, Ralph Corbin, Bill Hard- acre, and Gary Marshall made the biggest splash among the Cees. Climax to the season was a l2-7 win over Beverly Hills which gave them the unofficial Bay League championship. This year's JV team was composed of I2 freshmen, 6 sophomores, and one junior. The impressive style in which these underclassmen raced through their schedule gave every in- dication that LHS will be a team to be reckoned with in the future. - At the end of the season the squad chose Jim Powers as captain and Joe Jenkins as most valuable player. Pitchers Mike Afanador l5-Ol and Nelson Brinkman l2-23 gave sterling performances, as did George Desplanke, Don C ll' W ' Don B ' o ins, ally Hartman, Joe Jenkins, arry, Norm Hall, Miles Hokey, and Jim Powers. Through the years these mer- cants, many of them alumnae or the parents or employers of Leuzinger students, have pro- vided a vital contribution by purchasing advertising space in the yearbook. As the school year comes to a close, the Pylon staff would like to express its gratitude for the sincere interest these friends in the community have taken in our school activities We h ope that they will enjoy a pleasant and prosperous year which will find many of our classmates and alumni serving as their patrons and employees.
