As the graduating seniors of '51 and other students of Leu- zinger High School look through the pages of this yearbook, the Pylon staff hopes that this air age edition has captured for everyone the desirable memories and happenings of the 1951 school year. The staff selected the air age theme as it reflects the broad fields still left to conquer in the progress of the world. lt is the staff's sincere hope that the Seniors of '51 will go forth to fulfill their place in our growing and advancing world. May the cloudless sky of happiness marking their commence- . ment day continue for them. lv, A.,- fm , ,s.v Mw O la l 7 is 1 is 1 ADOLPH, ,rr.l ,,s.s - ,a,,,,.....--ef ,..1-f' . He ioined the instruction crew as a teacher in the social science de- partment. A His ready humor, genuine interest in young people and his helpfulness quickly gained for him the personal friendship of other teachers and students. He has had other teaching assign- ments at Leuzinger. In 1940 he served as baseball coach of a championship team. The flight here was interrupted August 16, 1945, when Mr. Nyman left to serve Uncle Sam as lieutenant iunior grade in the U. S. Navy. He returned here to resume his pre-scheduled flight on December 11, 1945. February 3, 1946, marked a milestone in the flight as he was appointed to the controls of the newly created position of direc- tor of curriculum and guidance at Leuzinger. Under his direction the counselling and guidance program was organized, with the English and history classes serving as the guidance runway. Many students found their school life happier and more suc- cessful because of the understanding guidance of Mr. Nyman. And so to Mr. Nyman the yearbook staff of 1951 dedicates the air age edition of the Pylon and waves him on to even brighter horizons in the future as principal of the new Hawthorne High School. Varsity Baseball The opening day of school found many proud new seniors strutting around showing off their class rings and sweat- ers. After the .hustle and bustle of taking over the senior square, they settled down to the more serious business of studies and activities. You Can't Take It With You, which opened the activities of the year was rated as a top notch comedy. Many of the parents turned out for it and were proud of the work their sons and daugh- ters had done. The first semester activities ended with the Senior Mardi Gras Hop, to which the student body was invited. Charting the course for the tirst semester Seniors are Nautaliea Henry, secretary, Leora Christman, Girls' league representative, Jim Maxwell, Boys' League representative, and Margie Rudd, historian. THE SENIORS SALUTE . . . . . . Beecher Fawcett, one of the most loved and respected teachers of Leuzing- er High School. Mr. Fawcett has been a hardworking and loyal counsellor to the graduates of 'Sl for their entire four years. No matter how crowded his sche- dule or how many important things he had to attend to, he always seemed to have time to talk over a student's prob- lems with him. Mr. Fawcett came to Leuzinger in 1930 and founded the Chemistry and Physics Department. For a long while he also headed the Math-Science Department. Before coming to Leuzinger, he gradu- ated with a master's degree in Science of Education from Colorado State Teach- ers College. He taught for six years in Colorado before moving to California where he earned another master's de- gree in Education at U.S.C. Among his many hobbies are paint- ing, poetry and music. During his spare time, he often plays tennis or experi- ments with radio. Words cannot express the gratitude of the Senior Class for the guidance and never failing devotion of this kind- hearted gentleman, Mr. Fawcett. nkno E G U1 JUNIORS, FRONT ROW, C. Brown, J. Ta keoff Starting the year for the freshmen was the Baby Sister party sponsored every year by the Girls' League to help the freshman girls get acquainted with their classmates. This year's party was titled South Pacific. Next on the list was the election of the navigators for the first semester. On the cabi- net were president Bob Markle, vice-president Marilyn Rodman, secretary Beulah Greet, treasurer Kay Kastner, Girl's League represen- tative Pamela Haueter and Boys' League rep- resentative Don Maxteny. lt took a little while for the freshmen to gain altitude because everything was so new to them. The flight at times was bumPY1 with strong headwinds and air pockets delaying a perfect flight. Generally, though, it was ideal flight weather for Leuzinger passengers aboard the Pylon. SEPTEMBER . . . The airport is in condition ready for the take off. The passengers are all eager to start. September ll is the day of the flight. A check of the reservations finds all aboard, with the flight crew at the controls and passengers relaxed in their assigned seats. Then the tower signals, All Clear, and the Pylon taxiies down the runway for its round-the-school-year-flight. OCTOBER . . . Our first stop in the flight is on the football Held. There the teams are warming up, and, looking overhead, we note the sports queen pageant in good formation with candidates aboard colorful ships. Land- ing in the first place spot on the runway is the senior class entry. . NOVEMBER . . . Flying once more over the airport, we catch the talent show checking in, with Doris Kohler leading the way. DECEMBER . . . Everyone is back again ready to start on the Christmas flight. Getting ready for the short trip, you can see the senior play at the edge of the runway head- ing for a good flight. As the climax before the holidays, short flights are scheduled to the Christmas Assembly and yuletide formal. A visitor to the Leuzinger hangar at this time is Santa Claus. JANUARY . . . After a two-week layover, the crew and navigators are starting a new year. The crew is receiving their flight checks, marking the end of the first semester. Cruising over the hangar, we spot G.A.A. members pre- paring for their Seventh Heaven banquet. FEBRUARY . . . Spring fever came early and left this month's log uncrowded. Highlighting the month was the Sophomore Sweetheart dance. MARCH . . . Unlike February, March is crammed with activities. At the controls for the maiority of the time are the seniors with their Hop and Banquet and in top bill- ing is the senior prom Dancing in the Dark. APRIL . . . All is not well for the fairer of the crew is faced with being grease monkeys on Slave Day. Buzzing through the auditorium, we watch the Student Body play being presented while backstage the Awards Assembly is wheeling out on the runway. Circling back over the hangar we see the Faculty Assembly under way, while, off in a distance, you can see the seniors of the crew taking a one-day off course trip. JUNE . . . This is a busy month especially for the seniors with their awards assembly setting the pace. lt is a time for fitting oft caps and gowns and for practicing gradua- tion. The great day of graduation is to be preceded by the traditional baccalaureate services. With the close of school, the Leuzinger '51 flight checked in at the airport and discharged passengers and crew. Records were checked and reservations were made for the flight of '52. They de- feated Compton lO-7 and Anaheim 6-3 in two overtime periods. Larry LeFevre led the poloists in scoring, with 21 goals in ten games. Bob Lester was runner- up with 9 goals. Larry was chosen as captain by his teammates, not only as high scorer, but also on his defensive play. Varsity lettermen were Don Strumher, George Dinsmore, Gary Rogers, John Skeen, Charles Redman, Louis Smith, Bill Stokes, Bob Owens, and Pat Ross. Bee monogram winners were Bob Pritchett, Murray Fisette, Alan Simon, Fred Rose, Ernest Hernandez, Orville Taylor, Ed Brown, Gerald Rosenberg, and Ronald Collins. Coach Hunt looked forward to a successful swimming season with most of last year's swim- mers returning, but when practice began only 5 varsity men showed up. Seven of his returning men had ioined the navy. As the Pylon went to press, the swimming season had not been concluded and the letter- men were not known. Although their season was not yet complete as the Pylon went to press, Leuzinger's varsity horsehid- ers seemed to be one of the strong contenders for the Bay League crown. The team was sparked by a snappy infield which included Larry LeFevre at first, Jack Jones at second, Bob Neal at third, and Dick Barr at short stop. Seven members of last year's 9 lettermen returned to add experience to the already powerful Olympian line- up. Hitting stars appeared to be outfielders Ralph Todd, Ron Slaton, and Bob Lester, and catcher Bob Selden. Two dependable pitchers saw Leuzinger through their tough l4-game league schedule. Don Bevans, a sensational Junior chucker, hurled a no-hit game on opening day against Mira Costa.
