Dust-swept, barren Leuzinger, five years ago, was surrounded by fields of weeds and with the coming of the rains, the campus became a mud puddle. Water covered the baseball field, forming a lake which the students nicknamed Sauer's Lake. Gradual changes at Leuzinger have resulted in the elimination of water by installation of a drainage system and growing of lawns. fllany other improvements have taken place, and Leuzinger looks forward to many more in the future. Usually Senior classes come gradually to the fore, but this year the rise of the 12B class has been rapid. It has among its leaders four possible Seal-Bearers, the majority of the SB. officials for the coming year, and the Girls' League president. In athletics the Senior B's have been the mainstays of two championships in basketball and one championship in track. The members of this class were the outstanding members of this year's tennis team, which took second place in the Hlarine League. The progress of Leuzinger has been rapid of late, and with such a promising class of future Senior Hs, the progressive activities of the school should show increase and variety. 12B CLHSS OFFICERS Flusr 5ENlli5'I'lilt Orricn Sucomu Smiusruu Robert Clmse - - Pre-si4lf-nt - - Robert Chase flnnn Hvizll - x.l1'l l,l'f'5lill'lll - -,IINIUX Williflmy PIEQYJ' Fvftfvf - SvCrHu1'y' - - Paul Wif-rk Gwendolyn Hynes - Treasurer Jgym-,q 110,-nbpk Iiil'hlIfl1 Cliff!! - - - Hisiurian WYL'.Vll'-Y' Heizlt I can n 4' ,I nh II .syn - Buys l,l'i1fIllt' lit-pri-se-liluliw - Girls' Lvilglllk' llc-pn-sf-rilalivv - Milton Kay - jcun II 1' fulmsun llnrothy ll. The team had only partially overcome this handi- cap at the beginning ot the regular league games and succeeded in making a fair showing. Disregarding the win and the loss standing, which was the lowest in our history, Lorin Knowlton, guard, and Reginald Hayward, tull- back, showed enough outstanding and all-around ability to be selected lor the mythical Pill-Hlarine League team. The B team, champions during their HC and D years, again attained the highest position in the league, although they were under a new coach and system. Plfter the conclusion of the games, the B team was named as the out- standing B team in the City System, along with Polytechnic. The varsity missed championship by eight points, thereby showing up very favorably. The varsity team was handicapped by a lack of good competitors in each event. When this edition of the Pylon was ready to go to press, the marine League finals were coming up. The varsity as a team will probably not make any serious trouble for the expected league runner-ups, llarbonne and Torrance, but may show in some events as individuals, especially in the shotput, high hurdles, high jump, and the mile. Robert fflerson, Charles Walters, Robert Chase and a B relay team composed of Walters, fllerson, Dorman Delaney and Fowler, succeeded in reaching the Southern Cali- fornia trials held on fllay l4. TEIll'1IS l -4151 A - BHSEBHLL PROGRESS IN ATHLETICS 0 Keeping step with general progress, athletics have gained prominence in the last three years of Leuzinger's existence. Both golf and tennis have been raised to major sports. Tennis especially has grown in importance with the installation of our own courts. Track has shown considerable progress in certain varsity events and practically all of the lower class events. During the 1934 and 1935 seasons records have been broken and rebroken. Part of this is due to the fact that the track and pits have been improved immeasurably and part of the credit can be given to the individual performers. Girls' sports have risen to prominence in the last year with the selection of Leuzinger as the scene for Play Day Leuzinger took the big event of the day-first place in the posture parade. Offering of the various trophies and awards which were not offered in the past have encouraged interest in girls' athletics. The future for Leuzinger on the athletic field may well be represented by a huge question mark. Incoming classes seem to be poorer and poorer in production of an athletic crop, but since this may not continue throughout all their high school life, Leuzinger has a chance of at least maintaining her standard of the past. 2000 d Q, EJ' 'K 1, . - Z, .
