They started the ice cream sales in their junior year, to raise money for prom. During their senior year they sold magazines, and raffle tickets as fund raisers for their class trip until they felt they would go crazy. Everything they did was just one more step towards graduation day. They've been waiting twelve long years, but now the big day is finally here. They discover they have mixed feelings. From Seniors who knew this would be their last year at LOHS there was a shout of joy and laughter, tears for the goodbyes they'd have to say, and fear for the uncertainties of the future. Many of them are headed for college or Vo-tec, but no matter what lies ahead, they will always remember the good times they had here at LeRoy Ostrander High School. 3 • I Chris Allen Eastvold Russell Lynn Foster Karin Kay Grass James Edward Hindt Jared Roger Jacobson Steven Joe Jacobson Kathlene Ann Ahrens Brett Allen Bergan Steven Richard Brownlow Molly Jean Johnson Daniel Kiefer Michael James Kunert Vernon Lester Lentz Mark Arthur Nagele Cathleen Ruthann O'Rourke Aaron Todd Paulson Monte Lee Payne Jodi Marie Rowe David Lynn Vigum Diane Renee Wheeler Holly Susanne Schaefer Julie Kay Sorenson Brad Theodore Speer Sheryl Ann Taylor Jeffrey Martin Truman MOTTO: TAKE A LOOK AT US NOW, FOR WE MAY NEVER PASS THIS WAY AGAIN FLOWER: BLACK ROSE COLORS: BLACK AND SILVER SPEAKERS: KARIN GRASS JULIE SORENSON 1. Class speakers Karin and Julie prepare their speeches before commencement begins. School Day Memories Julie, Katy Brett show their excitement in the reception line. As we reach out our hand The diploma we grasp, While we think of the memories Of the years in the past. Tears fill our eyes Because it's all gone. We're starting a new life. We have to move on. We hope friends will keep in touch As the years pass us by. Although it hurts inside We'll try not to cry. We think of kindergarten And our first day, Now we've reached the end We are going away. How do you say good-by To friends who mean so much? Will there be time To sincerely keep in touch? You'll always have the memories Of your school years from day one. Don't think of school as ending-Think a new life has begun. FOR WE MAY NEVER PASS THIS WAY AGAIN. ” THE 95TH ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT mdL°„Hs J, May 18, 1986, in the high school gymnasium. Attired in their cardinal red caps and gowns, 25 graduating seniors entered to the processional Pomp Circumstance, played by the Senior High Band. The junior escorts, Tracy Batt and Michelle Ullom, escorted the 25 anxiously awaiting seniors to their seats. The class speakers were especially good and gave well-thought-out speeches that warmed the hearts of their listeners. Several scholarships were presented with the first being presented by Mrs. Barb Payne. This $200 Richard Harvey scholarship went to Katy Ahrens. Mayor Everett Kinter, on behalf of the City of LeRoy, presented Jared Jacobson and Jim Hindt each with a $500 scholarship. Principal Richard Rominski presented the Granahan Memorial Agricultural scholarship of $100 to Brett Bergan. The $250 Runnertrand scholarship presented by Mr. Rominski also went to Jim Hindt. Fred Hanks, on behalf of the Bloomfield Insurance Company presented a $300 scholarship to Karin Grass. Three $800 Lomholt Scholarships were presented by Supt. Yost to Julie Sorenson, Katy Ahrens Aaron Paulson respectively. A GPA of 3.25 is a requirement to be eligible for a Lomholt scholarship. Finally the graduating seniors received their long awaited diplomas for which they had worked so hard the past 12 years of their lives. We are sure that members of this class will take a definite role of leadership in the world. The class gathered outside for handshakes and hugs from parents, family and friends. So....Take a Look At Us Now For We May Never Pass This Way Again. KARIN S SPEECH JULIE’S SPEECH When I was writing my speech I iust couldn't quite think of an introduction. My father said that ne would give me ten bucks to start out with Here I stand before you because I'm not behind you. So. Dad I said it. but you can pay me later. Take a look at us now for we may never pass this way again. Yes, do take a look at us now. We re here. I can't believe it. We have gone through many stages in our school career. First elementary, then high school, our class trip and now graduation. I don't remember much about elementary, but 1 do know that we got in a lot of trouble. Then along came high school. High school is . . . Note books and pencils, getting grades, a nose to the grindstone, outwitting a teacher, an apple on a desk and maybe even a deer head. High School is cramming all night, learning to remember, remembering to forget, borrowing books and swapping notes, reading and re-reading. High school is cutting classes and running over to Jack's, watching the clock, an occasional detention, cheerleaders and school plays, concerts and prom, football games and wrestling meets, locker fires, school lunches, long lines, making friends and now saying good-bye. It was fun while it lasted. That was high school, then came the class trip. The class trip is a long, long bus ride, sun and sunburn, dancing, golf, go-carts, 3to0's, pictures, and being thrown in the pool and being locked in the back of the bus. That was the class trip and now comes graduation. Graduation is a lot of things. Graduation is an exciting event, a moment of randeur, a long march up a strange aisle, a diploma, a quick andshake, a deep breath, a sigh, a hope, a dream. Graduation for some is the finish line, for others it is the beginning. For some it is an end; but for others a means to an end. Graduation is a link in a chain which binds the past with the future and safeguards the present. Graduates move from something old to something new . . from something familiar to someplace unfamiliar. Graduates want to go places and do things. They want to be connected to great ideas and important tasks like walking on the moon and exploring the bottom of the sea. For some matrimony enters the scene, sometimes Uncle Sam's finger points the way, for many financial woes detract and occasionally a little curiosity of laziness upsets the plan. Sometimes mistakes are made but they are seldom permanent. There are always possibilities ahead. There is always room to maneuver, not only at the top, but up and down or sideways, in one door and out another. The voice of countless professions and occupations can be heard. There is something for everyone. Graduation will turn you into alumni. It will show you the direction but it won't get you there. Graduation is only as good as we make it. So take a look at us now. Not many people thought that we would make it, but look at us now for we may never pass this way again. Take a look at us now for we may never pass this way again. Take a look at us now - the graduating class of 1986. The class no one thought would make it this far. The class that knows how to have fun. Our reputation started in elementary and has stayed with us until now. Maybe we deserved it, but take a look at us now. We made it. All of us! Now we enter another stage of our lives. This is it — the end of high school, but not the end of the good times. Many of us are going on to school or into the military. We will take with us many memories of our friends, and the good times we have had. There have been a lot of good times. Such as the Class Trip, Prom, Homecoming and today — Graduation. Some of us will leave here smiling, and some sad, but all of us should feel proud as we walk out the door. As we look to the future, we are filled with excitement of what's to come but also fear and anxiety. We wonder what we will be doing in the coming years. We are all a little afraid, but that's to be expected. When we do feel afraid, we should remember the courage and bravery of one of our classmates — Monte Payne. We should realize just how lucky we are. Monte is someone that lives with pain and uncertainty about the future everyday, but yet when we see him, he is always full of smiles, hope, and a desire to make it. We should all take a look at ourselves and learn from his example. We have our whole lives ahead of us to do with what we choose. It's the opportunity of a lifetime. But it won't be easy. We will all make mistakes and sometimes we will feel like failures and not want to do on. But we will pick ourselves up and go on, remembering the good times and thinking of the future and our success to come. We will make it. To the senior class of 1986 I say — Strive for happiness and success Search for friends and laughter Share thoughts and smiles and kindness with the world — But most of all, be the best that you can be. Whatever you seek — may you find it Whatever you find — may it bring you happiness. I wish you good luck and all the happiness in the world and I am proud to be graduating with you. I would like to close with this saying — The quality of my life — Today is up to me and no one else. I can make good use of it or I can waste it. Since it will never come again — I will make the best of it. 1 will make this day one of success rather than failure, joy rather than sorrow, love rather than hate, satisfaction rather than frustration, laughter rather than tears. The choice is always mine. I will live creatively, enthusiastically and proudly. 1 will live this day to the fullest! Thank you Massive SPORTS USCLE OUR ATHLETES. They have strived for greatness at every moment, sometimes being recognized for it, and other times falling a touch short. FOOTBALL: We were ranked high going into the season and we lived up to our reputation. The 11-1 season is quite impressive to say the least. We also can't forget our fans sacrifice of warmth when the snow began to fall However, football is not the only sport at our high school. VOLLEYBALL: There was also the girls volleyball team. Practicing after school every day was one of the many sacrifices the players had to make. They came out with a 8-11 season. BASKETBALL: Here's a sport in which we had both boys and girls teams. The boys had a good season. They won the Maple Leaf Conference and went on to play at Districts. They put out a season record of 14-8. Our girls team didn't seem to have lady luck on their side this year. They played hard and gained a lot of experience. They had a 1-18 season. WRESTLING: This year we had a lot of hard workers on the wrestling team. Individually they did very well, and also as a whole team. The team had an outstanding and productive season with a record of 6-7. TRACK, GOLF, BASEBALL: We also have spring sports. These athletes work very hard and get very little recognition. We are proud of our athletes at LOHS. If next year is anything like this year, it's sure to be a year filled with pride and victory. FOOTBALL CHEERLEADERS Sheryl Taylor, Holly Schaefer, Trish Hanson, Lisa Miller, Lori Miller, Cheryl Davis, Kim Brown-low, Joni Bye. Ooo Ahh son of a gun — We just won another one! This year the LOHS Football Cheerleaders found themselves doing that cheer quite often. They are always trying to get the team and the crowd fired up for the game. It seems they are always busy with something to do, from making posters, to locker signs to run-throughs and practice. This year we had a very young squad. We had three eighth graders, three freshman, and two seniors. Although we were young and inexperienced, we had a very good squad. The new ones were very excited but also very nervous. They were always trying their best and willing to improve. We asked some of the younger members what was the most nerveracking: Hoping you won't goof up. Cheering for the first time in front of people. The pep-assemblies. We also asked what was the most fun about cheering: When you can get the crowd to cheer with you and when we won Class C, Section 1 Champs and to go to the State Playoffs! We, as seniors, hope to see cheerleading continue to increase in numbers and spirit. We had fun this year and we will definitely miss it next year. Good luck to all the future cheerleaders at LOHS. Although we finished the season with an 8-11 record there were other fine, close matches that we lost-Preston and Caledonia in particular. In those matches we played very fine volleyball! We learned a lot of lessons this year; many of them the hard way. In 1986 we will reap the benefits of the rebuilding process and measure how well those lessons were learned. Chris ended the year with an outstanding 30-0 record. Another highlight was the promise of the Junior High Wrestlers as four of them earned varsity letters. As a dual meet squad GMLO ended just under 500 however, with ten returning letter-men the squad appears to be set for a great future. Competing without two weights the squad still earned third at the Ellendale tournament, fourth at the Harmony Tournament, second at our own GMLO Tournament, and qualified eight wrestlers for Regionals. Through hard work we reached many goals and if our Wrestlers continue to improve the stage is set for a great future. I had the opportunity to do new things like playing different sports, meeting people who have different customs than I am used to, and 1 got the chance to experience another climate. Thank you for letting me share a part of my education with you. It will be difficult to forget this experience. I hope to see you again some day. Having a native Spanish speaker in our Spanish class was a very special addition to the 1985-86 school year. Ramses often shared his Mexican culture and customs with us. We hope that Ramses learned as much about our lives here as we were able to learn about his. Ramses helped bring two different worlds a little closer together. Gracias, Ramses y mucho suerte. Miss Boda Sharing our home with Ramses this year has given us the chance to expand our growth as a family and our knowledge of a new country. Although Ramses was a very quiet person, he always presented himself in a mannerly way, showing us the patience and understanding that is attributed to Mexico. We enjoyed learning the differences and likes our two countries have and now hope to have the opportunity to visit Ramses' part of Mexico one day. It was not easy for Ramses to leave the familiarity of his family, friends, country and school, but we hope he will be able to carry a little part of our country back with him. We have enjoyed having Ramses with us and look forward to the day when we may host another student. Best wishes to Ramses, Duane and Sharon Hanson, Hosting Parents.
