Yester Year Though time is of the essence Hours drifting steadily by 1 find myself dreaming I shan’t know why Hour glass stardust Sifting through my mind Recapturing warm memories From youth and of the kind Events of yester year Worn though they are Ringing happily in my mind Twinkling like a star — Pam Monson Karla Jean Foster May 2, 1964 - Nov. 22, 1978 The Senior Class of 1982 dedicates this annual to Karla LOVING MEMORIES Your gentle face and patient smile With sadness we recall You had a kindly work for each And died beloved by all. The voice is mute and stilled the heart, That loved us well and true, Ah, bitter was the trial to part From one so good as you. You are not forgotten loved one Nor will you ever, be, As long as life and memory last We will remember thee. We miss you now, our hearts are sore, As time goes by we miss you more, Your loving smile, your gentle face, No one can fill your vacant place. The week went along well with the Freshmen accepting all of the traditional initiation pranks like greasing hair and make up day, the slave auction, opposite sex day, and bow down to Senior day. The rest of the student body had activities like, security day, grub day, hat day, dress up day, and baby day. Coronation was held on Thursday with the crowning of King Pat and Queen Rhea. The parade on Friday was cancelled due to bad weather. The highlight of the week was the football game against the Grand Meadow Larks. It was an extremely foggy night but the Cardinals managed to see through the fog and win 47-0! “Gemini” was the band for the dance to top off a great week. 7 8 Danette Bob Homecoming Queen Rhea-King Pat Pam Scott Royalty Pam Brian Deb Jim SENIORS Daniel Paul Arndorfer Danette Faye Baumbach Delayno Ervin Dietrich Brian Halver Elliott Cynthia Ann Feeley Bradley Allen Frieberg Christine Lea Granahan ■ Patrick Lee Hanson Michael Lee Harvey Rochelle Leann Hovey Denise Kay Kempe Michael Wade Lunning Daniel Blaine Miller Pamela Rose Miller Pamela Rae Monson Rhea Rae Monson Robert Eric Mossyge Sheryl Adonna Nagele Scott Raymond Peterson Renae Joann Rindels Rick Robin Ruud Curtis Robert Sheely Mary Helen Stem Vicky Lynn Stockdale Debbie Lee Thorson Brett Paul Turner Class Flower: White Rose Class Colors: Red White Class Motto: “What Appears To Be The End May Really Be A New Beginning” Senior Officers - Advisors Sheryl Nagele, Sec.-Treas.; Dan Arndorfer, Vice Pres.; Rhea Monson, President Mr. Ervin Richardson, Mr. Dale Jellings Senior Class Will I, Daniel Paul Arndorfer, will the Rambler with Pat’s dent in front, to Ray Kiefer. Sandra Regina Amaral Mattos came to our home, having difficulty speaking English and not believing how cold it can get. From the first idea about having an exchange student stay with us, to taking her back to the Rochester Airport for her trip home, has been a very rewarding experience. Sandra was an extremely nice and fun person to have around. Very eager to learn our language and about our way of life. Whenever we went somewhere she was always ready to go along. She helped whenever asked and even had the pleasure of milking cows and feeding calves. We will always remember how she laughed when the calves sucked her fingers. We have learned much by having her here. First of all we know more about the country Brazil, from which she came, and how other people in the world live. (Even to the extent of eating black beans and pastels) We received a viewpoint of how we, as Americans are looked at by people from another country. Secondly, we had the chance to compare educational systems with another country. Thirdly, we were able to compare our democracy with a more military government. We would like to thank the LeRoy-Ostrander High School principal, Dick Rominski for having her in school and for giving us this opportunity. Also, Joe, Jackie, Chris and Sherri Granahan for letting her stay there and for making her a part of their family also. Lastly, thanks to you, the students, who became her friends. She became very close to you and we appreciate her having so many friends. Having Sandra here was a very special experience. I, myself grew to love Sandra like a sister. It’s amazing how much can happen in just three months time. It was hard for her and I to say good-bye at the airport. We both cried, but the tears were not all sad ones. There were also tears of joy and friendship as we stood there hugging and crying, we both knew we had gained so much from the other. The team travelled to Rush City, MN, which is north of the cities, for a game and an overnight stay. It put a little variety in the season for the team. Although the season ended with three losses, the team outscored its opponents 215-53. The team won a share of the Maple Leaf Conference title with Spring Valley and came out of district tournament play in 2nd place. The team also got 4th place in the Hayfield tournament held in early October. The Cardinals’ only conference loss was to Spring Valley and Spring Valley also defeated LOHS in the district championship game. Spring Valley later advanced to the state tournaments and placed 3rd. Under the coaching of Mr. Craig Knight, the boys improved immensely this year. Neil Yost led the Maple Leaf Conference in scoring this year. The Cardinals this year was a very young team and more improvement is expected for next year. A lot of credit was given to the team, since they were not one of the winningest teams in the conference, but they didn’t give up and made our school proud of their determination. 43 non-conference games District Tournament Future Stars Improve! Because of the lack of interest for wrestling this season, there were a lot of empty spaces to fill in. It was a young team with no seniors and only 2 juniors wrestling for LOHS. Individually, several team members had pretty good seasons, but injury also set in this year for Joe Hamlin to put him out for the season. Next year LO’s wrestling will be together with Grand Meadow. The young guys from this years team with their newly gained experience and that of Grand Meadow’s team members, should make for an interesting season to look forward to. 47 Varsity Wrestling Cheerleaders Rachel Chilson, Lynee Thorson, Melissa Miller. Finishing the year with an 18-5 overall record, up to tournaments, and a 13-4 conference record, the girls were very impressed with the outcome of the year. Going into the district tournament, the Cardinals were seeded high. The final foe of the year was, once again, the Spring Valley Wolves, who have dominated the conference for a long time in girls’ athletics. The championship game, as it was, was devastating for several of the LeRoy players. Sheryl Nagele was out for quite a while with a twisted ankle, and Nancy Olson injured her knee quite severely, which later required surgery. It was a good year, the best in a long time! 49 B S q u a d a s e t b a 1 1 Left: Front, L-R: Cheryl Haaer, Anna Fox, Becky Heimsness; Back, L-R: Coach, Ross Mattke, Kathi Lidkte, LaRae Schwinefus, Lisa Winkels, Janelle Whisler Below: Front, L-R: Sheryl Taylor, Jane Freerksen, Julie Sorenson, Tammy Harrington; Back, L-R: Coach Ross Mattke, Deb Richardson, Karla Mackey, Julie Miller, Kirstin Hanson C-Squad Basketball Golf Baseball Row 1, L-R: Pat Hanson, Mike Norby, Bob Brownlow, Brent Kohn; Row 2: Lars Swenson, Kevin Hodson, Eric Swenson, Brad Frieberg, Mr. Swenson 52 Row 1, L-R: A) Johnson, Jay Johnson, Russ Foster, Monty Payne, Greg Norby; Row 2: Corey Foster, Joe Hamlin, Neil Yost, John Moe, Brian Hovey, Mr. Wolford Track - Again With G.M. Vikings In Leroy? Student Council This year the Student Council tried something a little different than usual. They hosted the Minnesota Vikings travelling basketball team in LeRoy on April 2. The evening was filled with laughs and excitement as the Viking team went against a team nicknamed the Southeastern Minnesota All-Stars, consisting of men from the past history of basketball. The Minnesota Viking team won the game overall by about 4 points, but it was a very close game. The Viking players that were involved were: Joe Senser, Bobby Bryant, Greg Coleman, Dave Hoffman, John Swain, and Doug Sutherland. It all started with the election of Marie Sutherland as the District XIV Secretary-Treasurer at the District Convention held in Mabel-Canton. Many others were greatly involved this year also. Lisa Hanson was a member of the Minn. PEP Squad and Shelly Hovey and Pam Miller were the District XIV WINS Team. The members of these groups attended workshops and then performed their own workshops at the district meeting and other meetings. In February, Mike Norby was elected as our “Heartcharmer”. InApril we took a trip to the Chanhassen Dinner Theater to see the play “Dial M for Murder”. It was excellent! The state meeting was one of the best this year that it had ever been. It was held on April 22-24 in Minneapolis. It was here that LOHS was outstanding. AAE’S were won and Sue Bruns was elected to the Minnesota PEP Squad for next year. The banquet was held on May 4 with the 15 senior members receiving a rose and the rest of the members receiving their pins and recognition. FHA Keepin’ Busy!
