The week started with the art class decorating the lobby windows for the yuletide season. On Friday we dismissed early for the afternoon activities. Among them were the sled race, tug-o-war, sno-ball throwing, and the best Christmas Character Contest. This year was a rebuilding year with only two Seniors on the roster and many inexperienced underclassmen. Inexperience and mistakes at key moments, because of the team's youth, were the results of most of the losses. Next years outlook is very bright and optimistic as we have almost everyone returning. LeRoy's B-squad experienced a very gratifying 74 season with four wins and two losses. The first two games of the season brought the two losses of the year. Inexperienced players could be attributed for the losses. After some Sophomores were restationed to playing both A-squad and B-squad L-O destroyed the other teams not allowing them to score once. The team gave up 52 points defensively while they scored 138 points offensively. Key players for the team were Donnie Gerber, Bret Baumbach, Craig Hutchins, Craig Nagel, and Mark Thorson. After opening the season at Grand Meadow with a convincing 16-0 win, the junior Cardinals had their hands full the rest of the year. They showed a talent to come from behind in the second half to win the game. A good nucleus of seventh graders helped fill the vacancies. Grant Hutchins and Kevin Eastvold did most of the ball carrying with the line opening up the big holes. The top pass receiver was Dave Miller with Roger Yost and Hutchins doing most of the throwing. Interscholastic volleyball is getting bigger every year, and this year we had a 12 game schedule. New uniforms came this year, home and away ones. Using our skills in each game the team grew better and more experienced, and by the end of the regular season was 12-2, but 7-0 in conference. So we became the Maple Leaf Conference Champions! The tournaments were then started and LeRoy was seeded no. 1, and on the Friday night after tournaments started- LeRoy-Ostrander was the District One Champion. Region One tournaments in Owatonna LeRoy-Ostrander vs. Mayo High School of Rochester. As the old saying goes all good things must come to an end, our season did with a loss to Mayo. We finished first in the conference, losing only once to Grand Meadow. The next time they met LeRoy handled them quite nicely in defeating them. This is the third year for volleyball; the first two years were spent learning the basic skills. The teams offense had very good serving ability. In the area of defense this was the first year we successfully accomplished the bump, set, spike. Even though there wasn't a Dist. Tournament for B-Squad the team was confident that they would have been 1. Though the B-squad cheerleaders were young and inexperienced, they showed promise and great potential for the future. They worked hard as a team and came up with great results. Each game set a new goal and they almost always hurled the difficulties with strong determination- to achieve their goal. Cheerleaders 51 A Squad Cheerleading (Wrestle) Becky, Sheryl, Terri, Kris are unique in many ways. These girls cheer on the wrestling team, cheer on the crowd, and at the same time are so precise and emotional. These girls worked hard through the season and are are well appreciated. This is the second year Pom-Pon has been active in this school. They've performed at many different sports: football, basketball, and wrestling. Some of the highlights of the routines were the flashlights and the bells, hats, G mittens routine. We started our first year with a complicated routine of Drums Ride On . The peal-off was one of our most liked moves. We've worked hard and for many hours to perform only a brief routine. We've added something different to our squad this year— a white cardigan sweater displaying our names and class years. We feel we've achieved success! ! ! Band Where does someone begin when talking about these groups. They all put in a lot of their time and should be given a lot of praise and thanks for doing so. During the spring they even have to give up their noon hour. Marching Band did a great job again this year and they took a lot of yelling from Baldwin, but in the long run, it was worth it. This band was increased by quite a number of kids. We had so many that there were not enough uniforms for everyone. We then set out to raise money for new uniforms with the help of LeRoy Jaycees. THANKS Jaycees! ! ! Moving on down the line, next comes the concert bands who also did a lot of practice getting ready for contest and concerts. The Symphonic band participated in a concert at Spring Valley. As for the Wind Ensemble they went to Chatfield to contest. They received three B ratings. Last but not least, there's Stage Band, who went to Eau Claire again this year. This was their highlight for the year and they all enjoyed it much. They also participated in the Band Concerts and Style Show. This was the first year that the kids in Stage Band received an award for all the time and work they put in. For an award they each received a shirt which reads L. O.H.S. 74-75 STAGEBAND. 68 Band Concert Bands Wind Ensemble Row 1: D. Boley, C. Berg, M. Eggerich, D. Osland, J. Hawkins, E. Plumb. Row 2: J. These groups include: Elementary Chorus, Junior High Chorus, Rainbow Singers, Girls Glee Club, Mixed Chorus and many solos and ensembles. The year began early for the Rainbow Singers who sang at the Western Days Concert on June 13, 1974. Lots of changes were made in this group. First- a new name; second- an outfit of their own and next- quite a lot of choreography with their songs. They earned their usual star or A rating at State-Regional Contest in Spring Valley on May 3. Many concerts were given. Before Christmas and during Lent they sang for eleven church congregations in seven separate concerts. Other concerts included the 40-Milers Barbership Show, Senior Citizens Club, Lutheran ALCW SE Convention, Spring Vocal Concert, and Graduation. Senior High Chorus and Girls Glee Club performed at the Christmas Concert, District 1 Contest and Spring Vocal Concert. Ratings earned at contest by Mixed Chorus were B,B, C, and by Girls Glee Club B,B, A. Many solos and ensembles worked throughout the year. Ten entered district contest with five receiving A ratings. These were: Girls Quartet, Junior Girls Ensemble, and Deb Mensink and Ed Dahl- each on solos and on a duet. Those earning a star or A rating at State-Regional were Deb Mensink and Ed Dahl - each on solos and on their duet. The Rainbow Singers also received top rating at state. Some of the other musical highlights of the year were taking three busloads of students (grades 5-12) to hear the Indianapolis Symphony play in LaCrosse, having guest concerts by Hayfield High School and the Ellis Street Singers from Mankato State College. They did a great job and should be commended for it. THANKS Sheryl and Dick. Among the usual activities that are planned by Student Council, was a Christmas Dance by Sunn that everyone enjoyed. This was a new idea which will hopefully continue. Another event planned was the Spring Dance in April which was new to the school. Emerald City presented music for the evening. When next year rolls around there'll be new people new ideas which will form another great Student Council year. This year's members include Diane Stern, Ginny Lentz, Janet Ellingson, Tom Olson, Dick Soltau, Joel Lider-man, Jim Olson, Jaci Finhart, Becky Granahan, Steph Miller, Mona Schwerin, Patti Monson, Sheryl Hindt, and Advisor Mr. Hanson. 74 Student Council NHS Has 14 New Members Take note of the smiling faces of the NHS members this year. Why all the smiles?--Previous to the picture-taking we were all reminiscing about the college tour we took throughout southeastern Minnesota and the cities. Yes, we all did gain knowledge on the types of higher education available to everyone, but just as important as the knowledge was the fun we had. Ask a member about the Gopher Theater and our French lesson. This year's senior entrants for a national scholarship sponsored by the Society were Annie Schott and Sue Shaw. New initiates for the year consisted of three seniors, eight juniors, and three sophomores. April 11 was the day set aside for their installation. Officers presenting the ceremony to the senior high student body were: pres.-Annie Schott, vice-pres.-Ron Hansen, Sec.-Deb Beddow, and treas.-DeAnn Elliott. First year members were: Cyndi Henderson, Todd Stockdale, Dick Soltau, Bill Olson, Bobbi Thorson, Luann Edwards, Lisa Wade, Deb Gardeman, Al Barker, Ed Dahl, Sheryl Vatne, Peggy Hindt, Jodi Shaw, and Janice Tangen. After several hours of filling an application, a written and oral interview, Vance Losey and Rodney Batt received the State Farmer Degree. Ceremonies were held at the state convention banquet where each received his charm. The chapter received the National Chapter Award at the state convention and was ranked as a superior chapter. Todd Stockdale was top individual in the State Ag Mechanics Contest. This year FHA went back to the old style of formal meetings. The officers wore dresses that were exactly alike. To get us out of the red and into the black in our bank account we sold light bulbs. As to how good we did is yet to be determined! The next big event was the District Meeting, held in St. Charles. Marcia, who is state Rec leader, led the song fest at the District Meeting. Many workshops were offered and eveyone enjoyed the day. At our November meeting a beautician from Wykoff gave a demonstration on use of make-up and hair care. In January a new president-elect was voted in, because Janet Ellingson moved. Caroline Berg was elected! In February we planned out most of the year and decided who was going to state meeting in April. Our field trip this year is to Amana Colonies in Amana, Iowa. FHA week was March 17-21, and daily activities were held. It was a good year and a good time was enjoyed by all. A salute to the officers who were: Sheryl Monson-President; Caroline Berg-President-Elect; Jayne Bergan-Secretary; Mary Jutzi-Treasurer; Virginia Lentz-Historian; Marcia Souhrada-Rec Leader; and Miss Cuda-Advisor! ■ nt n 1 OF AMCqip a Student Action For Education Left To Right: Jayne Bergan, Sue Shaw, Becky Granahan, Adris Larson, Terri Brownlow, Lisa Wade, Sandy Jacobson, Debby Nosek, Janice Tangen, Mary Jutzi, Dixie Osland, Deb Beddow, Kim Haug, Ginny Lentz, Deann Elliott, Steph Miller, Kris Brownlow. SAE The members of SAE participated in different activities including parent teacher conferences, open house night, exchanges with different schools like New Prague where five girls went and ate a lot of times at Mr. B's restaurant. Another time in the spring, five more members went and visited a college dance. But don't forget those that came back from these towns, five from New Prague ate with the rest of the members at a pizza supper. The five from Worthington went to a movie where they all fell in love with Kris Kristopherson. SAE members worked hard as teachers Aides receiving points for their labor. They finished their active school year on May 20th with another pizza supper. 78 SAE Paper Staff A year of mixed madness can be the only way to describe paper staff this year. Near the beginning of the year we had a change in advisors. With both of the editors in job-training during the morning, printing days were very time-fighting periods. Some new things we tried were sending the paper out to be printed at Christmas time and in May. This worked great when everyone got their articles in. Student Songs, Horoscopes, a new Senior Profile, and puzzles, were just some of the new features started this year. Of course the standards of Seen Heard, Can You Imagine, Album Review and others dotted the pages throughout the year. Working on a page for 3 hrs. and then realizing you used an even instead of an odd page. 2. Walking the streets of local towns for money. (Advertising of course) 3. Shooting a whole roll of film with the lens cover on. 4. Trying to remember your Editors name. 5. Discovering you have 7 days of school left G 70 pages to do. 6. Having your car keys locked in the Annual Room. 7. Falling out of broken chairs. 8. Trying to keep the whole student body out of OUR back room. 9. Making Mr. Richardson realize he's no longer an advisor. 10. Exuberantly proud to present to you the 1975 Cardinal. -4 • Upper Left: Colleen Koch working on a suitable layout.
