SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Twelve years ago, September 5th, to be exact, our teacher, Miss Woodcock, was confronted with 24 small problems and their mothers. After roll call was taken, the first grade was found to consist of the following: Jewell Bauch, Donna Jean Brownlow, Jacqualine Despard, Joyce Despard, Ann Eckstein, Mary Lou Fister, Betty Jean Gould, Maynard Hiller, Darlene Lappin, Marjorie Larson, Donnis Lundering, James Mahoney, Clark Malcomson, Devota Nash, Twila Northness, Leon Olson, Lorraine Reed, Ernest Spencer, Jessy Sternberg, Glenn Stevens, Bernice Leiblei, Daryl Ford, Jeanne Klassy, Harland Knight. The next year, we reported to a different room, and different teacher. Miss Moe had charge of most of the original “problems” with addition of Grace Haskin and LaVonne Subra. This same year we lost four members; Mary Lou Fister, Leon Olson, Ernest Spencer, and Harland Knight. Our next year of training was under the leadership of the same teacher and with most of the Second grade members with the exception of Bernice Leiblei, and Grace Haskin, who left us and Paul Everson and Mary Alice Rasmusson, who were the new enrollees. In the fourth grade we again got a new teacher. Miss Johnson. Also three new pupils enrolled, David Briggs, Roy Peterson, and Charles Utesch. We lost two of our classmates, Paul Everson and Betty Gould this year. A new teacher and a new atmosphere added to our experiences during our fifth year. Our new instructor was Miss Sielstad. During this year we lost three classmates; Charles Utesch, Roy Peterson and Daryl Ford. The sixth year addition more than offset our losses the previous year. This year we gained five; Mary Bredeson, Robert Holeman, Bill King, Sid Berg, and Freda Timm. This year was not totally a gainful one in attendance however as three members of our class left us. They were: David Briggs, Joyce Despard, and Mary Rasmusson. Our first Junior High year was begun by losing four students: Ann Eckstein, Glenn Stevens, LaVonne Subra, and Jessy Sternberg. This year we got a new home room supervisor. Miss Nelva DeGroodt. This year, and for the next five our classes were divided with an instructor for each. Our last Junior High year we gained one and lost four. Herbert Knight joined the happy throng, and the following left it: Jacqualine Despard, Darlene Lappin, Devota Nash, and Robert Holeman. The next year we shall all remember for many years to come. Initiation and our first year of Senior high school. This year, the country schools supplied us with ten new members. This list includes: Isabel Anderson, Leslie Anderson, Merton Christensen, Jack Fisher, Marvel Roe, Elsie Rowe, Kenneth Smith, Charles Utesch, DeBlonde Johnson, and Raymond Storing. This year we lost four: Robert King, William King, Herbert Knight, and Twila Northness. Senior Class History (Continued) Next comes the tenth year of our outstanding education, during which many things took place, first of all we were the class to initiate rather than be initiated as we were the year before. Another event we will all remember is the Junior-Senior Banquet at which we were waiters and waitresses. The members of the class that were not chosen to serve were ushers at commencement exercises. This year we added to our yet small class, Elsie Gullickson, Hildreth Hanks, Betty Harding, Glenn Stevens, and Romaine Otto; but we lost Donnis Lundering, Raymond Storing, and DeBlonde Johnson. During our eleventh year we added Floyd Otto and lost Mary Bredeson and Elsie Rowe. Many events took place this year; putting on the Junior Class Play-- Junior Miss”, choosing class rings, preparing for the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, and escorting the Seniors into the auditorium at Commencement. We entered into our senior year with the loss of Betty Harding and Jewell Bauch. Some events scheduled for this year were our trip to Mason City for graduation pictures, the play-“Skidding”, senior skip day, the very lovely Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, and last but far from least — Commencement Exercises I We graduated with six of our original class: Donna Jean Brownlow, Maynard Hiller, Marjorie Larson, Clark Malcomson, Glenn Stevens, Jeanne Klassy. OUR CLASS Our class is going out in the world A long hard trip; it's true. And we will need a great many things In order to see it through. First of all our hopes and dreams, Ambitions, schemes and plans; The things we dreamed in '48, Will fill our future’s span. Next we pack our courage. The thing we’ll need the most To meet the world unafraid, The unrelenting host. Last we’ll pack our memories, But pack them all with care; For we’ll remember school days And the things we used to dare. Our memories can ne’er be taken, Our hopes and dreams can neither be. Our courage; these will last forever, Our class---eternity. Oh, God, we give thee thanks For Thy care to this present date. For with Thy help we realize We are the masters of our fate.” JUNIOR CLASS Back Row: Charles Seese, Robert Regan, Carroll Hovland, Paul Bothun, Harold Kurth, Alfred Knutson, Wayne Perry, Howard Peterson, Burley Elliott, Peder Johnson. JUNIOR RAMBLINGS The Junior Class of ‘'48” is by no means an ordinary class. Our class is composed of actors and actresses, interior decorators, entertainers, and in general a group of potential wonders. We displayed our acting ability in the great production of “Growing Pains.” This was simply the trials and troubles of the two McIntyre youths and as an outcome, the effect it has on the McIntyre parents. We naturally enjoyed presenting it and are looking forward to our Senior play next year. The prom demonstrated the decorating ability of our class, and we will probably remember all the fun we had getting ready for it all of our lives. The gymnasium was decorated beautifully in various colored crepe paper to carry out our theme. After the banquet was over and everyone was quite content, the orchestra began playing the first number and before long the floor was full of happily dancing couples. Yes, the prom of ”48” was really a big success. We proved that we could entertain quite ably when we gave a farewell party for Dorothy Knight. We played a few “active” games and later a lunch consisting of sandwiches, cake, and pop, was served. Dorothy Knight was presented with a pendant on a chain from the Junior class and the party came to an end. We demonstrated our ability to be jewelry experts when one fine day all of us Juniors were called into the library. “Why, we wondered, so we went in and found out. It was about our class rings. After seeing and debating about the many choices, we finally picked one. It proved to be in very good taste and we think our rings are very attractive. We proved our ability for leadership by the election of our class officers. They are: President..... Vic -President Secretary..... Treasurer..... At noon a parade was held down main street and back to the schoolhouse. Then at night a program was presented by the Sophs with all the Freshmen taking part. Toby and Barbara made the cutest class babies and Bob Brownlow was a gorgeous bathing beauty. Note: It’s a good thing lipstick is cheap ! The next great event of our Sophomore year was Homecoming. The judges awarded first prize to our float which represented the theme “Keep the Wolves From Our Door.” The queen of our float, Colleen Iverson, stood by the door of the house guarded by a Le Roy football player, Leonard (Chesty) Remer, who protected her from Spring Valley’s Wolves, (Dale Kinter and Marvin Winkles). Now we come to the great sports stars of our class. They are: Russ Triplett, GordyMeyers, Roy Johnson, Keith Knight, Bob Larson, Bill Regan and Toby Spellman. They have shown a great amount of fighting spirit and ability this year and we are sure they will be some of the greatest stars Le Roy School has ever had. December 17, 1947 the Sophomore girls held their Hospitality Dinner which was served to the school board and their husbands or wives. The dinner menu included frosted cocktail, roast beef, fish, mashed potatoes, gravy, asparagus, buttered corn, rolls, relish plate, cranberry salad, ice cream, cookies and coffee. The dinner was enjoyed by all. A class party was held in the gym on February 1 6. Games were played and refreshments were served. Of course everyone went right home afterwards?? P. S. Wonder what those two station wagons were driving around town so much for ? Band! That was just Winkles and McGuillivary making hydrogen in Biology class. Unfortunately no one got hurt by the flying glass and acid. If it is, it isn’t, and if it isn’t, it is. Where have we heard that before? Ah, me. Geometry class, which also reminds us of J. B.’s motto “stall for time.” So goes a Soph’s year as time marches on. FRESHMAN CLASS At the beginning of the year we had election of class officers. The result of the election was as follows: President------------------- --Loren Jacobson Vice-President------------------Loren Leslie Secretary-Treasurer------------Barbara Madsen Student Council----------------Joanne Coonradt Eugene Triplett Class Advisor------------------Mr. Larson We are all proud of our brilliant Freshman class. Many of them went out for extra activities such as: Sports, band, glee club, speech, and tumbling. These deserve special mention. The boys who went out for sports are as follows: Bob Brownlow, Tom Spellman, Dick Johnson, Don Halver, Pat Sours, James Ackerman, Roger Morse, Eugene Triplett, Wesly Johnson, and Roy Green. Helen Lappin and Ruth Kulsrud are on the girls tumbling team. Many have special talent in music. Those in Band are: Barbara Madsen, Roger Morse, Loren Leslie, Donald Halver, Pat Sours. The Freshmen girls and boys in glee club are: Pat Sours, Bob Brownlow, Tom Spellman, Loren Leslie, Patty Estlick, Dorothy Johnson, and Phyllis Johnson. Those out for speech are as follows: Patty Estlick, Elaine Leer, Joanne Coomradt, Laura Sternberg, and Barbara Madsen. Of course, we must not forget that great day when we were officially made a student of the Le Roy High School. None other than Initiation Day. That was the day when the freshmen went around looking like circus characters. One day of initiation wasn’t enough, but we had to come back at night for a party? ? ? The Class Will and Prophecy was read that night which made us all laugh. A delicious lunch was served by the Sophomores. Then of course the parties, our first was a gym party. We played volley vail and basketball and had lots of refreshments. The other was a sleigh ride party which was held on a very cold night. We covered a lot of territory on our ride. After we got cold, we went to the Home Economics room, where we played “Spin the Bottle” and other games while lunch was being prepared. A night all freshmen girls will remember was the Hospitality meal, when we served all the High School teachers and their husbands and wives. They are, a Hallowe’en Party and an intended sleigh ride, but because of the weather we stayed at the school house and had games in the new class room. We also had a farewell party for Joan Jendins who left us in February. The party was called a Valentine’s Party because Joan was not to know it was for her. Everyone had a delightful time. Our next party is going to be a Costume Ball. To earn money for our class we had a popcorn and candy sale. They turned out very successful as they netted us eighteen dollars. Everyone brought candy and popcorn unpopped which we popped at school. I am sure everyone found it very enjoyable. We would like to have you know who in our class takes part in extra-curricular activities. Band--Keith Larson, Joyce Malcomson, Geraldine Johnson, Patsy Gute, Margaret Petsch, Russell Robb. The years will tell :: By the Eighth Grade SEVENTH GRADE HISTORY This famous little class started out in first grade with Miss Woodcock as their instructor. In our second year we had many additions to our class and w«- have kept adding until the present date. Now we have nine girls and nine boys. The class officers this year are: President-----------------------Ruth River Vice-President------------------Dean Hamlin Secretary-Treasurer-------------Jerry Mahoney Advisor-------------------------Mr. Gausmann Some of our members take part in extra-curricular activities such as band and Home Economics Club. The members of the band are: Lavonne Christensen, Wanda Tebay, John Hanks, Robert Sanderson, and Dean Hamlin. Members of the Home Economics Club are: Lavonne Christensen, Sally Miller, and Nancy McGillivary. We have had a few parties this year. Our sleigh ride party at Christmas time was a great success. We ate in the Gymnasium, and as usual we had more than enough to eat. Our Homecoming float was quite the thing. We had an old buggy, one which was popular in the “gay nineties.” We got the buggy from Dean and the horse from Roger Harding. After we got the outfit all ready for the parade, the horse decided that he wasn't going to go. We didn’t win this year, but at the rate we are going now, we are bound to win in one of the five years we have left. CHEERLEADERS Left to Right: Marjorie Larson, Donna Brownlow, Carroll Hovland, Mavis Malcomson, Jeanne Klassy. 1947 FOOTBALL SEASON LeRoy’s Starting Eleven LE-----------------------Jack Fisher, co-captain LT-----------------------Alfred Knutson LG-----------------------Frank Watts C ------------------------James Mahoney RG-----------------------Kenneth Smith RT-----------------------Harold Kurth RE-----------------------Romaine Otto QB-----------------------Clark Malcomson RH------------------------Frank Pelley LH-----------------------Russ Triplett FB---------------- ---Leslie Anderson, captain Other boys who were regulars until receiving injuries were Floyd Otto, Oakley Stockdale, Burley Elliott, and Bob Regan. The fact that all four of these boys were backs and injured early in the season, handicapped us most greatly as then Coach Haines had to reconvert linemen into backs which is very difficult; and then bring in subs for the all important line. Other boys who saw much service with the team were Wayne Perry, Keith Knight, and Bob Larson, with all due credit to the rest of the squad. The football season of 1947 proved to be one of up’s and down’s for the Scarlet clad cardinals. We ended the season with 2 wins, 2 ties and 4 defeats. The inexperienced cardinals opened by losing a non conference test to Blooming Prairie Champions of the Gopher conference by a margin of touchdowns. With 2 regulars on the sidelines this was to be expected. A week later with the team at full strength we captured our first conference test by a count of 6 to 0 from our old rival Adams. In our third game we met the Stewartville outfit boasting a record of 13 straight unblemished games. As injuries and illness again kept 2 of our ace players hobbling about, we had to be content with a 25 to 0 defeat, from one of the best in district. It seems as though our misfortunes were to never end; a week later we met Grand Meadow in what proved to be for the championship of the Little Five Conference. The jinx again held true and we had several boys sidelines, thus we were sadly defeated 26 to 0 by the Larks. We then on a beautiful evening in Mid October met Hayfield at the LeRoy athletic field. After completely dominating the game, we gave up two bad breaks which resulted in touchdowns for them. The final count Hayfield 13 and LeRoy 0. In this game Hayfield again proved to be a grand game opponent. It was after this game that we began to click, we then proceeded to hold the huge heavily favored wolves of Spring Valley to a scoreless deadlock in a conference go at LeRoy. Then we invaded Riceville, a member of the Northern Iowa conference and held the favored Hawkeye’s to a scoreless tie. The payoff of the season came in the last game; however as we again faced our old rival Adams coming here with blood in their eyes. In what proved to be a tremendous battle of blocked punts and bold line stands. The big red of LeRoy emerged the victors by a count of 7 to 6, which for LeRoy runner up honors in the conference race. Football (Continued) The 47 season was not one of orchids, but a season at times which was very difficult for Coach Haines and the boys. It has been openly stated by competent sources that the ’47 squad showed unusually fine conduct and sportsmanship on the field. Also with practically the whole squad returning with a sound brace of experience all of LeRoy High and city can look forward to the potential great '48 grid machine. BASEBALL 1947 Baseball Season LeRoy had a very good record this season. They played 9 games losing two. The two losses were in the earlier part of the season to Spring Valley and Stewartville. The schedule is as follows: LeRoy 6 Stewartville---- 3 LeRoy 3 Adams 2 LeRoy 0 Stewartville 7 LeRoy 3 Spring Valley 4 LeRoy---- 15 Elkton- 4 LeRoy---- 18 Spring Valley 0 LeRoy 14 Adams--------- 0 LeRoy 1 Grand Meadow 0 LeRoy 6 Elkton 3 There were only four Seniors on the 1947 squad. They were as follows: Kay Stiles-third base, Kent Vatne-pitcher, Don Regan-out field, and Harold Ludeman-out field. The team won the 1947 Little Five Conference championship with 6 wins and 1 defeat in the conference play. The season was a very good one with Kent Vatne doing a very good job of pitching and with Kay Stiles playing third base did some outstanding hitting and fielding. 1948 PROSPECTS The conference championship of 1947 lost only four regulars from the team which should leave a good squad to begin the 1948 campaign. The 1948 team will probably be a little young but it should have good fielding and hitting team. Quite a few of the younger boys received experience playing on the Junior Legion team last summer. The main question will be the pitching staff. The local have several good prospects in Keith Knight, Roy Johnson and several others, but these boys are sophomores and pretty young as yet. All the boys will be out there with a lot of enthusiasm. Last year the team got new suits which make our baseball team look very good. We can say that they are the best dressed ball club for a school of our size. A good season is anticipated and the boys will be out after another conference championship. YELL TEAM One of the most pep-inspiring organizations in LeRoy High is the “Yell Team.” Much credit is due these five school-spirited students who energetically led the cheering at football and basketball games and pep fests. They also initiated several new and original yells. Their duty was to spur the team onto victory with the support of the student body. It cannot be said they they shirked their task. BASKETBALL TEAM 1947-48 Back Row, left to right: Coach Haines, Gordon Meyers, Roger Morse, Robert Brownlow, Wesley Johnson, Paul Bothun, Donald Halver, Donald Klassey, Roy Johnson, Eugene Triplett, Sydney Berg, student manager. The gym is an empty hollow room; its walls echoing and reechoing the eerie silence that has heavenly fallen. For the seniors, Romaine Otto, Floyd Otto, and Clark Malcomson; high school basketball is a thing of the past. The season is finished. As we look back on the 1947-48 season we see many one and two point defeats that could easily have been wins, but that is all in the game. The cards “47-48’ team was perhaps one of the youngest in the Region with 3 sophomores, a junior and a senior on the starting five and many more promising sophomores on the team. The cards got off to a bad start, losing their first 6 games but then roared back after the Christmas vacation to take 3 straight games. One of these was from their old rival, Adams High. Then the LeRoy quint had their first bad break by losing Keith Knight, who along with Romaine Otto, was the only returning veteran from the year before. The rest of the season was up and down with the Cards winning but 2 of their 7 games. This was enough though to give them a share of the Little-Five Conference Championship along with Spring Valley. They both finished with a won 5 and lost 3 conference record. In the tournament, the Cards had the bad luck to draw Lyle, who went on to win the championship, for the first game and went down in defeat 38-26. All in all, Coach Haines did a very fine job in leading the boys to victory and with a fine bunch of boys returning we can expect great things in the forth coming seasons. But hats off now to a hard fighting LeRoy quint. Forward F orward Center Guard Guard GIRLS' GLEE CLUB The Girls’ Glee Club and all music organizations made their annual public appearance at a Music Festival given in the Le Roy High School Auditorium on March 18th. The numbers included “One World,” and “He Walketh Upon the Wings of the Wind. Under the very capable direction of Mrs. Harriet Hall, the twenty-five girls who compose the glee club have been putting the greatest work on “Great is Thy Love as that is the contest number for this year. The Girls’ Glee Club received an A” rating at the district contest held at Austin last year. They hope to do the same in “48”. BOYS’ GLEE CLUB Twenty boys’ voices comprise the Boys’ Glee Club, a well balanced singing group, whose repertoire includes folk songs, spirituals, light-opera choruses, oratino numbers. Among these are “Czech Walking Song , Go Down Moses”, Riff Song”, The Lord is Mindful of His Own , and others. For contest number, the boys are singing Scott's “Gypsy Life --a lively number, well adapted to boys’ voices. Mrs. Hall is director and accompanist--Carol Langehaug substituting as accompanist for the contest number. GIRLS’ SEXTET The Sextet is composed of senior high students. Donna Brownlow and Carol Strom--first sopranos; Jeanne Klassy and Lavonne Walthoff--second sopranos; Mavis Malcomson and Louise King--altos. Mrs. Hall—Director. The Sextet made several public appearances in 47” and is doing the same this year. This group composed of the same members (with the exception of Pauline Larimore instead of Louise King) received an “A2 plus rating at the district and also the regional-state music contest in 1947. The number for this year is The Night Has A Thousand Eyes. We hope their record continues. GIRLS’ SEPTET Seven sophomore girls make up this singing group. They are: Rosie Petsch, Carol Langehaug, Morie Knode, Mary Ellen Thoresen, Marilyn Thoresen, Leola Roper, and Ruth Harden.
