THE LEONIAN The headline hunters are scurrying around to meet a dead- line, the editors are frantically trying to solve a lay-out problem. Wliat is the object of this frenzied activity? The answer is found in the monthly publication of the Leonian, the Voice of the Students. Interviews, Mousey Musings, and the latest sports developments are just a few features by which the paper helps the students become better ac- quainted with the rest of the school. By attending the annual Columbia Scholastic Press Association convention, the writers and editors receive many ideas for bringing more interesting news to the readers and putting the paper to bed more efiiciently. BASEBALL With the return of the entire pitching stafi and catcher Hank Lewandowski, Coach Dumansky's ball players appear likely to improve on their fourth place position in the N.N.J.I.L. and their 9-7 record of last year. The returning moundmen include Co-captain Eric Gossman, joe Poliri, John Kilcullen and Frank Giordano. The infield and outfield also appear strong with such three year men as third sacker Ron Turecki and second baseman Andy Puller. Guarding the pastures will be such standbys as Charlie johannen and Frank Giordano. Last year's Leonia roster read like a family tree with three Giordanos. Track and cross country have outgrown their infancy in Leonia High School and are now sharing the limelight as major sports because of our strong and competent teams. This year there were many examples of both individual brilliance and overall team Ubalance. The cross country team, with Eric Groon and Phil Colbert finishing one-two, was undefeated in dual and triangular meets and finished third in the N.N.j.I.L. and second in the County Meet. Eric won the individual championship and Phil placed fourth to lead the squad to a second place in the state finals. Eric Groon, Phil Colbert and Rett Oren were formidable opponents in the New York City indoor meets. Eric ran the fastest mile for a Bergen County schoolboy, 4:23.5, in the New York City meet, With members of this squad moving over to the track team, we have every reason to expect a fine season for the cindermen. This year not only marks the end of our stay at Leonia, but also that of Mr. Carl W. Suter. After thirty-four years of service, he has earned the friendship and respect of stu- dents, faculty, and community.
