We go forth not as destroyers but as builders of the peace and democracy for which this war was fought. Our years in Leonia High School have been a vital part of the education which will enable us to carry out this task that we have inherited. 4 Qin Bmnrizxm In humble gratitude for the sacri lice they have made, We, the Class of 1946, dedicate our yearbook to the men of Leonia High School, Who gave their lives that We might live in peace and freedom. 5 Pvt. O, yours must be the leading, guiding hand That keeps the future safe from strife and hate, That holds within its grasp our sacred land, That wields the power to decide our fate. The chance we have, our parents once had, too, To shape a world where peace and hope could But misuse of their rights and freedom grew, Desire to keep the peace was all in vain. Their peace they lost. But now it is our turn: We have the chance to make the victory stay, But only if we make it our concern And learn to trust, to work, to share-to pray. 9 of 1946 reign eonia ore .Sala al, t n . , I x Q ,1 , K, Q ' 'N ,Qc mi LITERARY COMMITTEE ART COMMITTEE Literary Editor, Florence Jackman . The sky was dark- ening, thunder roared overhead, and the wind whistled violently as is tossed the helicopter, jointly owned by Mr. and Mrs. Mathew Cassidy fthe former Doris Andersonj and Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Edwards Cformerly Ann Binghamj, from cloud to cloud. Skipper Edwards crossed his fingers and whispered Dios mio!, as he headed for the meadows. After a slight crash, the honeymooners emerged from the debris and walked toward town, eager to find a repair shop. At the end of two blocks they were greeted with a deep purple and yellow sign: LEONIA REPAIR SHOP, BUCHER Bs HAR- LOW, PROPS. Two seemingly efficient workmen, Jack Anderson and Bernard Weinlaeder, approached them, and after looking the helicopter over, informed them that due to a slight discrepancy, repairs would require at least twenty-four hours. So they registered at the Home of the Three Musketeers QPar- kyn, Gill, and Truslowe, Inc.j and immediately summoned a bell- boy. Much to their surprise, Nick Costanza and George Woodward bounded toward them and showed them to rooms 208 and 222. After leaving their luggage, they took a 206 bus, operated by Bernie Grothues. Under the No Smoking sign, in the blue haze, they preceived the music critic, Dick Klenk. On the way to their respective first night performances were Ada Boyd and Ernest Truesdaleg and in the last seat were Judy Gallus and Mary Ann Intermont en route to the current production of the Ziegfield Follies. The bus stopped in front of Heubel's Cafe and the two couples went in for a freshly prepared snack of coke and pretzels, specialty of Virginia Thompson, cook. Bustling around the neatly autographed mahogany tables were Muriel Ahland, Gladys Balazinski, Fermina Babich, Alice Babikian, Pat Rochford, Dorothy Schmittner, and the two singing waitresses, Janet Boyd and Sue Brown. A unique floor show, between bites, featured Forrest Rinehart reciting W. Alexander Peyton's Ode to Keatsworth Shellrynburns g Bob Ranieri, Bob Costello, and Oscar Pladek's comedy act, Don't Take It With You g Stanley Bryant's lecture on How to Move Furniture , a Spanish dance by Terry Marzoccag and a lecture, Be Neat When You Eat, by Professor Roswell P. Barnes. The walls were spangled with the masterpieces of Gertrude Benson, Barbara Dempsey, Mary Fabianek and Ethel Spierer. They had little time to admire these, however, as the bouncer, Johnny Blackmore, told them that their tables had to be vacated. 52 Our friends tnen hailed a taxi driven by Jose deVictoria and reached Town Hall where a concert by former acquaintances from L. H. S. was in full swing. Martin Bachthaler's Bavarian Waltz, played by Albee Stecker, Arthur Goldberger, Ed Deysher, Don Vic- torin and Frank Cascio, resounded throughout the halls as they were ushered to their seats by Joe Cariddi and Paul Conlon. Next, Dot Rockett's lovely contralto voice took them back to the halls of L. H. S. as strains of Harriet reached out over the crowd. Florence Jackman's rendition of Rhapsody in Study Hall, followed by the highlight of the evening, a violin duet by Bob Butler and Mari McGowan, brought the program to a close. When they reached home, it was the wee hours of the morning, and they took in the milk bottles labelled MUSTERMANN'S DAIRY. The next morning, Matt went out for a paper which he found was co-edited by Nancy Buckley and Sally Hallahanf The head- lines told them that workers of the Scientific Association of America had gone on strike. The leaders seemed to be Professor Janice Keeler, chemist, Professor Virginia Zeug, chemical engineer, Dr. Edward Armstrong, dentist, Dr. Judith Katz, chiropractor, Joanne LaPorte, lab technician, Muriel Fordyce, her assistant Cwho, incidentally, still puts a cork in a hot test tubejg and Marvin Rubin, Harry Sher- man, and Ed Tomeski, chief janitors. Another front page article told them that the intrepid explorers, Hans Fischer, and Herbert Luckert, had experienced a narrow escape during their recent tour in Africa. While wandering through Togo Pogo jungle they had been accosted by a troop of pygmy head-hunters led by Bill Kardel and Jack Cantu, and including Herbert Ackerson, Jack Keena, Teddy Berardicelli, Jack Elmore, and Bill Massey. They were eager to add two blonde heads to their skullinary collection, but quick-thinking Hans saved the day by shouting, Stop! I can make you all blonde, and immediately pro- duced a bottle bearing these characters- HYDROGEN-PEROX- IDE-223. On page two they found that Pat Muller, Marge Gulnick, Joyce Erpel, Adele Mettberg, Dorothy Wencz, and Frances Occhipenti were to attend a Teachers' Convention where Ruth R. Checkley, prominent missionary, would be the main speaker. Miss Checkley's business manager, Carol Christensen, would also attend the lecture. Matt, eager to learn the sports news, turned to the sports section and read about the latest game of the Lions. The team was coached by David MacMichael and included George Jewell, Robert Jaeckel, Gil Dillon, Bill Ogden, Ackley Carter, John Bowerman, Malcolm Keith, and Frank Tenewitz. Meanwhile, Rodney was getting Wanderlust fever, so after call- ing the repair shop and finding that the helicopter was still under observation, he -decided to call on Mayor Doris Dickerson to see if something could be done about the delay. 53 On his way through town, he busied himself by reading the signs on the Broad Avenue Buildings. Next to Nemo Mims' Vitamin Shoppe, running stiff competition, was Don Robert's Carrot Carnival where his able partner, Bob Minasian, could be seen submerged in the green tops. Directly across the street was Bogert's Bristly Beard Blade Bargain Basement, where he and Lee Ellis were engaged in a shaving demonstration on Norman Papay and Bob Moje. Adjoin- ing this building was Hope Wingerath's Fashion Fair, where Gert Wragge, Alva Relph, Pat Franzson, and Alice Petersen were busy fitting a gown on Mme. Olga Slezak. Ever-thirsty Edwards couldn't pass the Lang and Tangeman Confectionery fformerly Bischoff'sj without stopping, and the ready waitresses, Alice Zwemke and Ruth Thompsen rushed up with his usual order, a Leonia Special. Obeying Ann's command to purchase a potato peeler, Rodney turned in at Ricciardi's Department Store. He boarded an elevator operated by Ray Oelfke and got off at the third floor. Much to his embarrassment, he realized, but too late, that the third floor had been converted from a household department to a women's fashion center. Here he ran into Rosetta Cahill, Beverly Blair, Jean Freas, Jackie Swett, Gladys Seaman, and Janet Bishop -modelling the latest styles, and heading the department, Mildred Lubke. He quickly sought the information booth and was told by Marjorie Wejnert where he could find a potato peeler, Next to the information booth was a display of basketballs, personally autographed by Gunnar Olsen, Bob Jachens, and John McGavack. Once again he resumed his walk and finally arrived at 303-120th Street. Upon entering the Municipal Building, he waded through two outer offices where secretaries Angie DeCarlo, Carolyn Fusco, jean Ann Kondel, Joan Matasker, and Joan Kwitchoff were occu- pied figuring the Mayor's income tax under the careful supervision of Dorothy Price, Tax Assessor of the Borough. Mayor Dickerson, never too busy to greet an old friend, left the room where she was conferring with her newly-appointed committee-Peter Rotolo, Chief Counselor-at-Law, Geraldine Clarkin, Chief of Police, Gaile Kaiser, Postmaster-General, Elect, Frank Moynihan, Chief of Waterworks, and Jeanne Kingsbury, Director of the Youth Recreation Board. She immediately asked her lefthand lady, Carol vonHartrnann, to take over the meeting. While Edwards was in the middle of relating his troubles, bluster- ing Bucher rushed in to say that the helicopter was ready, and if Mr. Edwards would please dispense with the lawsuit, it would be greatly appreciated by Harlow and myself. And so our friends left illustrious Leonia, overjoyed by the re- union with their fellow inmates, who ten short years ago, had roamed the spacious halls of Leonia High School with them. 54 'v . Miss Dorothy Major Intramural sports are very important to all girls of Leonia High School. All girls have the opportunity of getting on one or all of the tive teams: soccer, hock- ey, volley ball, basketball, and softball. In this way they have a chance to acquire 1500 points for their L's. One hundred points are given for every first team player and two hundred if the team wins a championship. Points can also be earned through individual tournaments, such as badminton, ping pong, and others. There are some girls busy enough to earn a chenille L worth 3000 points. This is a great achievement.
