At this time all our thoughts and interests revolve about Leonia High School, our Alma Mater, and the four years we have spent in her sheltering care. These four years, the link between childhood and adulthood, are most important in the chain of our lives. Here, through our classes and our extra-curricular activi- ties, we have laid a foundation of resourcefulness, good- sportsmanship, and integrity upon which we shall build in the years to come. In that rosy future we see ourselves-and you-reliving these pleasant and formative years spent under the benevolent care of our Foster Mother. With this in mind, we have chosen to portray for you in photographs, snap- shots, drawings, and words, those persons and activities that have made memorable our days in school. By learning to know our classmates better, and by developing a fine spirit of camaraderie among the mem- bers of our committees, we who have worked so diligently to prepare this issue of Leonia Lore have greatly profited. If you who read our year book have even a small part of the pleasure we have had in putting it together, then we know our efforts have been successful. 5 I ibeckcafion By -our choice of her to whom this book is dedicated we, the Class of 1945, express our appreciation of the patience, the friendly un- derstanding, the serenity, the gracious kindli- ness, and the unfeigned interest in our activities that she has shown during the four years we have spent-in high school, and we proudly dedi- cate the Leonia Lore of 1945 to MISS MARY W. O, this edifice tall with ivy-clad wall, Set under the maple and elm, Is the school which we laud, on an Avenue Broad, With Nelson C. Smith at the helm. Here, Thomas and Turk compelled us to work, Though Major and James let us play. Lamont, we lament, our spirit has bent: But Suter has shown us the way. You've forced us to leam from Kattman and Kem! From Gibney we've heard how things crawl: Plotted square cones with Geometry jones Spattered acid on Uniacke's wall. We've leamed to be wary of Sanders and Barry: Under L. and M. johnson we've wept. Whacks we have had from the Nickerson lad: To Hollenbach's tune we have stepped. We've labored hard with both D. and T. Smith, Sawed wood with Bell more or less: Found that Savage is tame except for the name, And the Weir-Wolfe is not what you'd guess. 926 P g K Z Kiln K use 4- K-'J L as R, XX! Maureen Cahill Faculty Adviser A . ,, Miss Dorothy Major Josephine Rovelli Rosetta Cahill jean Freas Alice Ann Wagner Ann Bingham Mary Ann Intermont Doris Anderson Lois Sommerhalter Barbara Dempsey john DeVenere john McGavack ASKETB ll Encouraged by the fact that Leonia High School will have a new gymnasium after the war, Lion supporters enthusiastically witnessed many thrilling court games in which our school partici- pated during the '45 season. Coach Dave Jones assembled a squad built around a nucleus of returning veterans. Those around for action again were John Riker, Frank Tenewitz, Gunnar Olsen, Bob Jachens, Bill Hughes, and Gilbert Dillon. Leonia welcomed Westwood and Lodi as-new opponents, but because of difficulties during the football season, games with Cliff- side were cancelled. Mr. Jones, succeeding Roy Nickerson as mentor of the court quintet, capably led his squad through a fifteen-game schedule which featured several brilliant upsets. The Lions were particu- larly successful in non-league games with Ridgewood, Westwood, and Lodi. The Junior Varsity teams in football, basketball, and baseball afforded the coach an opportunity to discover and develop future varsity players. 101 TRACK Minus several graduates and veterans who entered the service, the Leonia High track squad dug their spikes into the familiar cinder oval to once again par- ticipate in a N.N.j.I.L. track campaign. Captained by Dick Spencer, the team was bolstered by several re- tuming veterans plus some promising new material. Those who saw action were John MacGavack, a milerg Bob jachens, high jumperg jim Miller, relay man: john Bowerman, who ran the hurdles: and Rodney Edwards who was a half-miler. Spencer, capably led the 440 runners. The feature meeting of the year was the league event at Englewood. 102 BASEBALL The familiar echo of the resounding whack of a bat colliding with a speeding baseball has died away, and another season of diamond competition has faded into the past. Leonia's baseball activities for the '45 season included a twelve-game N.N.J.I.L. schedule. The team was spearheaded by four returning veter- ans, john Riker, Ackley Carter, Gilbert Dillon, and Malcolm Keith. New additions from last year's J. V.'s rounded out this year's nine. The Lion diamond squad was again coached by Dave jones who also handled the football and basketball reins. As in major league baseball. Leonia High School lost material to the armed forces. john DeVenere and Dennis Connolly would have been on hand had not Uncle Sam beckoned. -7-,Q i IOS Q BOYS' X . Intramural sports again plaved a very important part in the extended physical fitness program at Leonia during the year 1944-45. Many future servicemen par- ticipated in such inter-class sports such as touch foot- ball, basketball, soccer, softball, volley ball, boxing, wrestling, horseshoes, badminton, ping-pong, and la croue. 10-1 INTRAMURALS alms' Faculty Adviser ,,A.... Miss Dorothy Major Intramural sports play an important role in the activities for the girls of Leonia High School. They give the participants an oppor- tunity to develop skills in games, cooperation, and good sportsmanship.
