This year more than ever, with so many of our friends away, we wish to bring to mind the child- hood years they shared with us. We have suc- ceeded in collecting many old snapshots, and we know you will smile as you recall those happy days. The pictures of the senior class, and the pages of activities in which we have participated H11 a large part of our book. And for those members of our class who have left Leonia High to enter the armed services, we can only wish they had been able to share the experiences which have made our senior year so pleasant. We look forward to the day when they will re- turn, and we shall all be working together to keep the world at peace. in ii- 651 J T 'I J E . . , tx , lf. , - 1 9. ik- ei f ' 1? W- Q r .,x 5.19 . ,'-.,.' ' 1 1 K 11'-x A f 1 r It is spring of the year 1954, and once again the pupils put on an air of conscientious study as they await with great expectation the arrival of the Evaluation Committee. The school is bright and shining as Mickey Kaplan and Dominik Karolkiewick of the Ajax Window Cleaning Company polish the dirt from the windows of the chemistry lab: Frances and Naomi Checkley, conscience-stricken after all these years have come back to clean their ill-fated charcoal experiment from the walls. We hear the purr of motors as George Henkel, cabby for the Van Houten Helicopter Taxi Service, lands the committee safely on the front lawn just as Dick Potter, chief janitor, gives the front steps a final sweep. His assistants are likewise busy, Ed Senghas still cleaning out the Leonian closet, and Fred Brown picking up the last of the cigarette butts, Bill Scanlon, principal of Bogota High School and Irene Fuchs, co- chairmen of the committee are the first to enter the building. Meanwhile Peter Albanese, who has become principal of the school through his consistant occupancy of the Inner Sanctum, is making last minute preparations with his secretary, Dorothy Whelpley. Trying to look efficient are Gloria Bell, assistant secretary, and Audri Wieben, assistantn to the assistant secretary, and the typist Frances Ingemann, who in the excite- ment writes the name of the principal as zryrt Sgnsmrdr. She is very busy erasing as the committee is ushered into the chromium-plated office of Steven Makocy, Supervising Principal. He is just taking down his favorite pin-up, Barbara Dias, photographed by Skippy Platt, known as the Lens Lion. As the committee plans its work for the day, and the co-chairmen make the class assignments, the psychologist on the committee, Miss Geraldine Kurza, S.A.N., B.T.O., A.B.C., X.Y.Z., dashes in. She has been delayed by having a few words with her old pal, Violet Jennings, sewing teacher, who was signing in late as usual. Ronald Brown, visiting Spanish teacher, who has just returned from a fellowship tour of South America inspects Miss La Mer's French class, and is properly impressed since he doesn't understand a word of French. Appraising the physical ed. activities, Margaret Rochford is awed by the magnificence of the modern gym where David Berg is teaching his pupils tiddledy-winks. Eleanor McFetridge is demonstrating to her girls' gym class high diving technique. L. H. S.'s new tiled swimming pool was built by the Leutner and Inglis Construction Company. Kay Smith, representa- tive of Ann Hastings' Seminary for Young Ladies, visits the chem lab where Helen Fluhr is finding it difficult to answer the questions of her enthusiastic pupils. The subject, dehydrated water, is one that Helen has always found fascinating but incomprehensible. Suddenly, crashing through the window comes a football booted by the educated toe of Albert Fagnonui, football coach, who believes in getting an early start. A bell rings, and the committee members are swept into the audi- torium by the onrushing crowd. A hush Cyes, we know it's hard to be- lieveb falls over the audience as the foremost orchestra leader of the country, Walter Bullard, raises his baton and signals his men to begin Thomas McCullen's latest composition especially arranged by Joseph Garguilo entitled Bash Me, Daddy, With a Mashed Potato. Seated at the piano we find Dick Norlander, and standing by his side, Bernice Nachman, P.T. Cpage turnerb. Upon closer inspection we can distinguish Walter Zacpal hidden behind the drums. Beside him, Zoltan Makocy with a mighty swing raises his arm to strike his triangle at the precise moment. Henry Ardler at the xylophone and Malcolm Blair play- ing the piccolo are having an equally difficult time. Nobody is surprised to see Dutch Westenberger plucking the strings of the harp! Mrs. John Gorman, the former Elsie Bauman, and Mrs. Albert La Porte, formerly Gloria La Salle, have come to hear their husbands, featured rival vocalists, sing. Thundering applause brings down the house. CThe balcony was weak anyway.J The lights are dimmed fit is cheaper that wayl as the audience sits with great impatience awaiting the performance on which the assembly program committee has rashly splurged the annual entertainment allotment of thirty-five dollars 45351. No, not a one-man band, but a genuwine Russian Ballet. We are th.l1. .i to recognize some of our old classmates in the troupe. There is Evelyn Cruickshankski, Margaretta Hofmanno- vitch, Anna Pallottova, Carlo Herterichhski, and Warren Hopkinsonoff. In 54 the featured dance we see Marjorie Schlamanansky glide gracefully into the eager arms of Billy Vannin. The final selection was a great success with june Colecoca and Pat Burchillovitch executing their famous pirouette. Missionaries, Barbara Scott and Sue Hoppe, have come to speak briefly on their experiences of converting the natives in darkest Africa. They have brought back with them two living examples of their fine work, Philip Schafiroth and Robert West, who after, studying with these kindly missionaries for years have finally mastered the English language. In the audience as guests are several distinguished members of the class of 1944. There is Senator Ed Johnson with his partner-in-crime, Naomi Dickson, who have come to hear the famous orator, Virginia Put- nam. In one of the rear seats we see Edgar Marookian, who has been dragged away from his chicken farm by his favorite farmerettes, Myna Bishop and Ethel Weber. We are also honored by the presence of Admiral Michael Minasian of the United States Navy. As we leave the assembly with the students we see Gregory Webb, builder of the George Uniacke Bridge over the Overpeck Creek. In the corridor, Arleen Stoll, finally editor of the Leonian, is pedddling her papers, while on the second floor Alma Sutter is still trying to get rid of left-over copies of the previous issue. Don McCaffery can be heard out on the street shouting, Extry! Extry! Get your red-hot LEONIAN right off the press. Abigail Pollock, elocution teacher, and Clayton Kaiser, teacher of English, both from Dwight Morrow, squander their funds on a copy. Douglas Hulst makes headlines by winning a tatting prize for his exquisite handmade bedspread. Women aviators, Peggy Strehan and Frances Sharp have just broken a world's record by their non-stop fiight from Leonia to Englewood. Marjorie Meyer, wealthy business executive, financed their flight. Catherine Ahearn, Leonian feature reporter, has covered the opening of the Knopping Sisters Three-Ring Circus, and was surprised to see Shirley Neumann, just outside the entrance to the big tent, shouting, Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! Come and see the big show. Step right up and see Ann McLearie and Edith Poeschl in their death defying dance on the high wires. She saw the lion-tamers Genevieve Ross and Helen Baker practicing their act while Elise Odmann stood anxiously nearby with her medical kit ready in case the lions needed aid. One of the daring acts was that of Frances Ferrera and her Bareback Riding Troupe: Janet Bush- mann, Eleanor Nelson, and Anne Tammi. In the social news we notice the marriage of Miss Catherine Barry to Professor Paul Landy, the inventor of the extra long yoyo for tall people. Mrs. Kenneth Gusovius, formerly June Howard, is the proud mother of twin bouncing baby boys. I the s orts section we read that columnist Ed Busch has just an- n P nounced the unanimous election of J une Dienges to the All-American Foot- ball Team. Pauline Connor, gossip columnist, has created a sensation by her scoop on the latest faculty scandal, At what local hot spot has Marjorie tl 'th Bob Barnett of the English Sill, Spanish teacher, been seen constan y wi Department? In Doris Thyssen's lovelorn column we read more advice to Phyllis Herman. Maria Paschkis, the night club hostess, has just announced the opening of her exclusive new supper club, featuring Essie Reynolds, well-known t W are sur rised that she has engaged singer, for a one-week engagemen . e p Raymond Ohswaldt and Ernest Needham as bouncers. Among the advertisers are Ed Holmes, The Smiling Swede, owner of a used car business, and Don Morris, Manager of the Bijou Burlesque ' 1 Theatre, who has announced the engagement of Ed Vonderschmidts five cuties, Barbara Hemenway, Barbara Rowe, Jeanne Rund, Clara Wells and Helen McCrossin. Miss De Rise, head of our Food and Cookery Department, interrupts th reading of the Leonian, by inviting the Evaluation Committee to a e hearty lunch in the new, enlarged cafeteria. Before they can reach the safety of 'he lunchroom, however, the bell rings, and once again they are rwhelmed by the onrushing horde. At the door of the cafeteria, Jean ove Rogan, school nurse, in a crisp white uniform is distributing band aids to 55 the lucky few survivors, among whom we see Ann Considine. On the final count of noses we find that two members, Mary Jane Howe, professor of voice culture, and Clara Weissenberger, art teacher, have fallen by the wayside. We are relieved to hear the well-modulated voice of Miss Howe as she pushes her way through the crowd, All right, youse guys! Look out! I'm comin' through! Miss Weissenberger has never been heard of since, and so another name was added to the casualty list. Behind the counter is Susan Matasker serving that ever-tempting dish, cole slaw. By her side is Martha Hohnholt ladling out bowls of soup. A new addition in the cafeteria is a soda bar presided over by Helen Beisele and Doris Koeng, chief jerkers. Suddenly a scream resounds from the kitchen as chief cook and bottle washer, Terry Mullen, snaps her whip to call Marie Burggraaf back to her dish drying. After their delightful repast the committee passes out-to the hall and thence to the library. They are greatly impressed by the oak panelling and the comfortable leather chairs. They seem to be not at all surprised to see Phyllis Hayne and Helen Bluerock, still students, hanging from the ceiling to take advantage of the new system of indirect lighting. Elbowing their way to the magazine rack they are delighted to find a choice selection. The feature this week is Batty-man in his daring escape to Mars posed for by Al Burger. Other favorites can be seen such as SIR! on whose cover we see their masked cover girl, Marion Tonjes, and CHIC featuring the gowns designed by Vivian Dennis and Mary Tice. The librarians, Dorothy Taylor and june Senft are in a huddle censoring DARING ADMISSIONS. As they espy the committee approaching, they hastily stuff it into the second drawer. Adele Schumm, head pencil sharpener, acts as hostess. As Frances Artau of the Evaluation Committee enters Marybelle Swett's math class, a volley of shots is heard. It is Gordon Quigley and Robert Marx, public enemies Nos. 1 and 2, accompanied by Florence Meyer, their gun moll, who are trying to rob the petty cash box in the office. The box is guarded by Betty Maychark. Viola Drews, nationally known G-woman dashed to the rescue and took the culprits off to the county jail. They will appear before Judge Kenneth Spencer on May 20. The commotion had barely died down when Marie Manning, science teacher on the Evaluation Committee, leaped into the air, emitting a howl of pain. Firewomen Anna Kolaya, Marjorie Lester, and Rosalie Molee were summoned to put out the hotfoot ignited by the fire-bug, Rachel Greco. Unnerved by all the excitement, the committee retired to the lounge which had at long last been installed by the members of the Board of Education. Among the members are Frank Brewer, Charles Cannon, and Felice Gusovius. Wilbur Ferrara, history teacher, spending his free period in the lounge, turned on the radio. They heard the last of the Smith Brothers' CBen and Bill? Dairy program starring the four Milk Drops, Christine Giannantonio, Pat Sul- livan, Jean Teats, Aileen Woodward. Herbert Steb, exponent of the Walter Winchell style of reporting, followed with some choice bits of gossip. They strained their ears as they heard him say, . . . Flash! Teddy CManvilleD Lemmerz has just announced his marriage to Gloria Kersten, torch singer, now that he has received his final decree from his eleventh wife, Mildred Parker. Miss Parker is said to be that way about a cow- boy whom she met at Rita Rust's Reno Rancho . . . Flash! Martha Lom- bard, the popular star of Mississippi is said'to have been seen with George Echentile at Jane Horton's beer garden . . . Georgie Parigoris, the featured rhumba king at Jane's Jernt is convalescing from a fractured hip in the seclusion of jane Hydell's Rest-if-you-can Home .... Flash! Carmella Terranova by a fast-talking, fast-moving campaign has defeated Mayor Hague in the Jersey City primaries .... Flash! Flash! He dood it again. Teddy Lemmerz is separated again .... Refreshed and quieted, the Evaluation Committee strode forth witn renewed vigor. Glancing out of the window they observed Margaret Senn posting a billboard on which the smile of Helen Dinzik gleamed as she advertised the Lestoque combination toothpaste and brass polish. Declaring their visit to Leonia High an experience never to be for- gotten, the Evaluation Committee ran for the school bus driven by Viola Fischer, but one hundred and fifty C1503 students beat them to it, and so it is standing room only until they get home. 56 ,fmxs : 7 D jfji Li .Xxx 553.5 1 9 T--F -W li m .n iii! They get their experience and instruction by acting as the foils of their older and more skillful comrades. The Junior Varsity is the stepping stone. to the Var- sity, and therefore, competitive games are sched- uled with as many Junior Varsity or smaller varsity teams as can be accommodated. This is true of football, basketball, and baseball. 110 -OL H' fS HISBFFPPF ., . H . , - v ff-'mx 'Ax 4 1 -,f ,5,,..H X 'V in P-.1 Senior Comics Thumbnail Sketches Don Winslow ..... Clayton Kaiser is on the honor roll. Geraldine Kurza is in school all day. Al Burger is the life of the party. Florence Meyer has black hair. Arleen Stoll Hunks. Ann Hastings refuses to say what she thinks. Shirley Neumann gets a feather cut. Eleanor McFetridge loses her voice. Terry Mullen is unprepared. Sue Hoppe wears sox. Genevieve Ross and Margaret Senn grow UP. Violet Jennings is a school teacher. Christine Giannantonio wears a frown. Naomi and Frances Checkley are chorus girls. Clalra Weissenberger is a second Ilka Chase. Helen Fluhr is without an excuse. E pitaphs Under this mound lies Anna Pallotta At last she did something she hadn't otta. 'Neath this grass so green Aileen does lie. She tried too hard to be six feet high! Here in state lies Anna K. She broke her neck in gym one day. Under this stone lies Doris Thyssen, She was scared to death when they let the mice in! Here is our monument to Edith Poeschl: She ate too many sandwiches at a social. The sepulchre here is for Abigail Pollock. She finally died from-of all things!-the colic! Under this stone lies Viola Fischer. A quieter spot no one could wish her. Alice and Evelyn had a fight: So Alice now is out of sight. Pause for a thought of poor J une Dienges: She swung on the gate 'till she broke the hinges. In this tomb lies Susan Matasker We don't know why-and we can't ask 'er. A quiet girl was Irene Fuchs, And she quietly died-too many cukes! Resting here is a girl who's holy. In life her name was Rosalie Molee. Each night when the skeletons leap and prance Anne McLearie still leads the dance. Here lies the body of Jane Hydell But you and I know very well Her soul's in-Heaven! Ethel Weber met her death Because for milk she drank some ethyl! Under the spreading chestnut tree fell Permanently-Our Adele! Appreciation We, the class of 1944, wish to express our thanks to our faculty advisers, Mr. Uniacke, Miss Johnson, Miss Smith, Miss Doane, Miss Barry, and Mr. Turk- ington, for their help throughout the year, and espe- cially their assistance with the LEONIA LORE. We appreciate, too, the help that Mrs. James has given to the art committee. In making mention by name of our senior faculty advisers we do not wish to imply that we are unmind- ful of all that has been done for us in other years. We are very grateful to the teachers of our fresh- man, sophomore, and junior years. Our thanks go, also, to the underclassmen and other friends who have bought our book, and to those advertisers whose support made this publication possible. 114 .J 1 , 5 .Jn H5 1 L 1 . .W .', , , n, ' 1 1 - v.,..-.,,.,.
