We have tried to show how our school life has been affected on all sides by the present conflict, Q and haw underclassmen as well as seniors are participating in the war effort. A Z Z We hope that you will enjoy LEONIA LORE, I943, as we have enjoyed the preparation of it, and that in the peaceful years to come you will look back on this record of our ac- yff tivities with pleasure and pride. We feel, however, that in these days of turmoil and strife when we are forced to look beyond our school horizons, to share in more mature activities than usual, and to accept responsibilities greater than those to which we are accus- omed, it is especially fitting that we recognize publicly the contribution which our classmates are already making to the cause of the United Nations and to ultimate victory. Therefore, to those members of the CLASS of I943 who have left Leonia High School to join the armed services of our country, we are happy and proud to dedicate this pan- orama of our high school life. Indeed, we would shout it aloud To every nation of this sphere That they might hear its sound and cadence, For around it lies the hope of Democracy. Not only is ours a heritage rich and deep, But it is our trust to keep the torch Whose flame our fathers have spread Around the world. Should we talk of all we've acquired, Or of the things which have inspired us In preparing to meet our trust, We could enumerate for days to come: Enough that from the ground up The foundation of our education has been laid. We know not the obstacles That lie in our way, Or of the dreadful toll it may take To control our environment And make a new world: But no price is too great To pay for our way of life. Our class was as a mighty river Made of two great streams which seemed To blend together, So each enjoyed the riches The other swept from its native soil. From California, Colorado, far Korea, Michigan, and New York through Various routes came sluggish and turbulent tributaries Giving new vigor to our stream. HlllllllllllIIIIIIIIIIIII SX - ,A , . if , L From Englewood, Hackensack, and Cliffside, Weehawken, Fort Lee and Ridgefield came this To share our hopes and fears. Together, we rolled onward through the years Until we became seniors in high school. The Victory Program was added. To our overcrowded hours. Classes as usual - plus! From early morning to late afternoon We bowed to tradition and glanced at reality. We gave up our formals and added more work. Our activities were limited in scope Until most pleasures a senior could hope for Were taken away, Making the day of graduation welcome. We are not, at a time like this, Bitter about luxuries we've missed: We live in a desperate world where liberties More dear than life may be whirled away lf we don't sacrifice the price they are worth. IV lt is as though our stream Were on the last mile to the gulf When it was turned aside. For the life of Freedom, we detour Through the deadly desert of war Where some of our waters will be taken, Where our stream will be shrunk By loss of water sunk to lands below. Thus ends our preparation And begins the chapter where our generation Shall write the destiny of the nation We - the young Americans. llIllIIlIIIIIIIIIIIIlIII . tide I 3 S 3 . And she's only 27! Check your wraps? asks the dim of laughter comes from the cloak room. of the Palisades Park over to whisper to Cal Whom did he 7 , the multimillionaire, sur- Florence Relph, and Marie Hilker. Long just divorced Alden Barker, inutive Marge Seal. A loud burst Dotty finds Isabel Fordyce, head Prattle, making a few off the record remarks Lit . a La Porta, her assistant, puts in her two cents every now and then. Did you know that Phil Fluhr couldn't be here tonight because he had to stay home to mind the kids? He's taking care of the five little Mullers, too. He promised Betty and Dick he would. Here's the big news! Eddie Finch FINALLY got that date with Cis Cosentino. They'll be here in a little while. ln the inevitable receiving line are all our old faculty chums, ten years older. Jean Lauffer is reporting the prom for the Leonian Al d h . rea y s e has an account of Rachel Lutz's experiences as a missionary in Korea, and Joe Murphy's success as a branch manager of the Holland Furnace Co. in th J ' ' e uiube, Belgian Congo. On this occasion we are fortunate in having Harriet James and her all girl orchestra with us, featuring our own Andy MacDowell and h' I is atest composition, Mother Dear You've Worked So Hard All Your Life for Me, Now Get Out and Work for Yourself. Louis Palma, editor of the new OH, MlSTER, which has run Esquire out of business, is escorting Regina Peck, the peek-a-boo blonde, on to the floor to start the evening's dancing. Directly behind them is Dick Kryhoski, the slugging first baseman of the Bloomer Girls A. C., and Muriel Emps sporting her latest model of the Evening Bloomers which made her so famous. ln the group just arriving we see Nancy Veale, the champion woman wrestler, who is leading Kent Roberts, former jockey at Saratoga. They stop to speak to Larry Hosie, talent scout for Billy Rose. Larry is with Connie Karros, the Dime a Dance girl, but his attention is being constantly diverted. A hush comes over the crowd as Arthur Wilson enters with his gun moll Lilly Tinucci. Lilly tosses her gun to Marge Seal with a Take good care of it, sister. l'd hate to have to use it on my old pal. An Easy Diaper Service truck pulls up with Don Noble at the wheel. Stepping out of the back are Rosetta Croxton and Neal Newby, communist agitators, specially prepared with their soap boxes. Tom Grothues, the lumberjack, with Virginia Brown, a waitress at Horn and Hardart, greets them and says-but we can't hear it because Bill Sheehy, Mayor of New York, comes riding along on the fire truck with Firemen Ben Pumo at his side. Bill Erickson, the mortician, and John Pall, professional pallbearer, are standing outside the door stealthily waiting for a victim of the night's festivities. lnside the grand ballroom-we mean the auditorium-the spotlight turns on the M. C., Bill Dunlop, who is going to introduce some of our class members who have recently become notable in the world of enter- tainment. First on the program is Miss Geraldine Lord who has just made her debut at the Metropolitan. Following Gerry, Eloise Eberle and Neil Killalea, members of the Bal- let Russe de Monte Carlo, will do an Apache Dance for us. Their perform- ance is rudely interrupted by the noisy arrival of Frank Blair and Leon Devantoy, partners in the Cozy Homey Burlesque Show, accompanied by Babette de Bary, whose specialty is the Comic Strip. At a safe distance from each other come Grace Mavus and Frances McKinless, rivals for the title of Deb of the Year. I We are surprised to see Thomas Albanese, the Wall Street broker, with his ex-wife, Mildred Rhode. Leon and Frank are causing such a disturbance that the chaperons look alarmed. Kathleen Dell, president of the local Woman's Club, has asked Kitty McCauslan to ask them to be quiet. The orchestra strikes up and dancing begins. Among the couples on the floor we see Admiral Andrew Donellan and Lillian Zink, who specializes in making stainless kitchens while her husband is away at sea. Another surprise is Alice Merker, recently chosen Miss Subways and the plumber, Otto Reinach. lt looks as if Stella Kearney is taking some of her own Love- lorn Advice, for she has made up with Stanley Ost who is now running the Fish Market. Harry Verity, the well-known authority on Amazons, is dancing with Margaret Blessing. There is a burst of laughter from the corner where Leon and Frank are and we see that Kitty is having as much fun as anybody. She has evi- dently forgotten her instructions from K. Dell. Jerry Blessing, the bookie, has joined them and is offering odds of 3 to l that the four members of the faculty who have disappeared from the receiving.line have gone on to Meadowbrook for a coke. Stanley Tustin, a travelling salesman, and Augusta Yost are trying to get in a good word for the famous brand of corn Post Yostie's -the Tusty breakfast cereal. Mary Voorhis, head of the QUACS, has temporarily deserted Dick Rhone, owner of the KEEP NEW JERSEY CLEAN garbage scows, to can- vass for recruits. Clinton Smith, floorwalkei in the top department of Macy's, has difficulty in restraining his wife, the former l-lelen Parkyn, from signing up at once. S Everybody is delighted to see that delightful couple, Claire Fiedler, the famous dress designer, and Donald Englander, the best-dressed postman of the year. We see in the group sitting this one out Doreen Rogers, child psy- chiatrfst, with Robert Holland, owner of a nursery school. We notice, also, Peggy Campbell, public speaking teacher at the new Palisades Park High School, with Charles Kiss, the auctioneer. lola Zoggia, who has made millions with her ersatz method of producing honey, is chatting witl' Emanuel Wachtel, the political boss and Paul Rovetto, the tennis racke- teer. Beatrice Todd, the tight rope artist, and Donald Tyson, Eversharp repair man, stop dancing to join them. ln another party are James Van Nutt, chef of the Chock Full O' Nuts, and Dorothy Targonski, hostess at the Waldorf Cafe. The group is leaving early because Sal Tropia is in training for track, and Marguerite Pyke has to be up early for an inspection trip to her factory. Marguerite, you will remember, coined the phrase DEFEND THE PEACE and has campaigned for the making of munitions during peace time. As they are leaving they stop to listen to Marie Sinatra, the blues singer who thrills millions every Sunday over the Red, White and Blue network. The band strikes up a Conga. Chickie Hansen and Dolores Ackerman, accompanied by a delegation from the British Navy, are first on the floor. They bump into Lily Gusarzewski, the great Russian novelist, and her inter- preter, Milton Huber. Milton's attention, however, is on Pearl Brown. He has been saying hello to her all evening and she hasn't answered. He doesn't know she has laryngitis. We recognize Alice Anderson, owner of a ranch in Teaneck, and Paul Bastien, veterinarian. Jane Hendrie, the stocking model, is with Joe Kopp, her severest critic. Cln fact, anybody's severest critic.l Margaret Alimo, the champion bowler, is in the line with Charles Edsall. The nurse, Paula Hopkins, is having a hard time keeping in step with Bernard Huf- nagel of the Bankers' Club. He is having a hard time keeping his eyes open. A loud thud draws our attention to Donald Lenz, the baritone, and Ruth Dell, dentist, who have just tripped. The cause of the disaster proves to be Joan Fitzgerald, who is walking around knitting, trailed by Charles Otis holding her wool. Ruth Kuntz is following them modelling one of her lastest wool creations. Now we all remember the photo fans who used to haunt the proms 'way back in '42 and '43. Well, Fred Thurkauf, photographer for Readers Digest, is up to the same old tricks. He is taking a candid shot of the group which includes Mariorie Metzdorf, model for the Ju-see three-way stretch, Charlotte Bronk, the Revolon Girl, Rita Silverstein, popular pin up girl, George Reisch, just released from a conscientious objectors' camp, Marilyn Stevens, chairman of the local W. C. T. U., and Jack Wieringa, who has come to New York on a secret mission to investigate undersea activities at the Aquarium. Having a good time over in the orchestra we see Margaret Bucher surrounded by the bird lover, Gerard Oelfke, Edward Maiewski, recent win- ner of an oratorical contest, and Bob Maher, who seems to be keeping them in stitches. lt is interesting to note that some of this group are STILL in college. Gloria Staehle has been leading the cheers at M. I. T. and Betty Slezak was chosen as queen of Dartmouth's Winter Carnival. Jack Steinberger is amusing some of the girls with stories of his experi- ences as a Private Service bus driver. He has discovered Ruth Taylor rent- ing roller skates at the New Jersey end of the George Washington Bridge. From her he has learned that Edna Shannon and Marie Sweisberger are living in a theatrical boarding house, both out of work and barely subsisting on the money they earned before the Eltinge closed. He relates the sad news about one of our friends-Theda Tobias has become a coffee addict. Shirley Williamson, who still has that tropical tan, calls us over to hear Bob Laughlin and His Charlie McCarthy lWarren Weidbrecht? who are giving a preview of last year's show. Some of those we expected to see tonight were evidently unable to come. Harold Senn is game warden at Penarcadia National Park. Dorothy Ruf is the sweetheart in every port, while Bob Meyer has given up in disgust because there are no available heiresses, and is living in a cave on Bald Mountain. lWe learned this from Irma Vonovich, authority on the Russian situationl. Luella McPherson is an usher in the moving picture house owned by her brother Fred. Alex Wagner should be here because he is working right here in town as night watchman at the Daylight Bakery. Leon Vallandry, maple syrup tester, and Anita Scherer couldn't make it because Anita was booked at the Hotel Taft as one of the THREE AN- DREWS SISTERS. Did we tell you that Colvin Soldan and Marguerite Woods of the silver screen have come all the way from Hollywood to see the old gang. Cal is narrator for Donald Duck, and Marguerite has become famous for her introduction of the boyish bob. Buddy Gallanrl has just invented o glass house and is trying to get a patent for it at the Hayes office. Judge Lois Stickle is giving him helpful suggestions. Over at the refreshment table Marguerite Roth and Margaret Lim- burg seem to be dishing it out. Getting their fill are Vincent Cresanti, librarian, and Doris Kuhlken, beautician. Dick Mathews, famous French hair dresser, is with Dorothy Meister, telephone operator at the Acme Trailer Camp. We hear Dick say to Dorothy Dolores Costello isn't married yet although Don Bonanno, the ice man, has proposed ten times. Yes, l know. And her old boy friend, Hal Hartwick, is a cowboy in Brooklyn. Leaving these two, we speak to Bob Hansen, owner of the Overpeck Yacht Club, and Joanne Binder, piano player with the Central Avenue Boogie Woogie Five. Another member of that famous quintet here tonight is Ed Williams, trumpet player. It is approaching twelve o'clock and the party is beginning to break up. Already we notice the disappearance of Marilyn Daniels, waitress at a milk bar, and Joe Fimiani, window washer in the Washington Monu- ment. They must have escaped with Bette Fuller, originator of the Bette Girl, and Harry Epstein, inventor of the automobile that runs on Pepsi- Colo. Stephanie Moynihan decides that she'd better' take Frank Moltzen home so he can rest up for his arduous work the next day. He is a zombie tester. We've certainly had plenty of surprises to see how some of our class- mates turned out. For instance, who would dream that Eleanor Flynn would be the author of the novel My Night , that Bob Lenz would be a casket maker, or Lucille Clark apple merchant. Nick Cosentino is butler at the home of June Liegeois and Arthur Muro. Two nights a week Arthur acts as butler himself to show Nick how it should be done. Times certainly have changed-but Arthur hasn't. In the cloakroom we hear Ruth Neice, the bombardier, asking Lou Northcott, flying correspondent from Greenland, if she ever listens to Anne Cernek's daytime serial sponsored by Mother Murray's Malgrimated Mush. We hate to leave because we are expecting Stewart Boyd to fly over from Shangri-La with Evelyn Gallo about two o'clock. Evelyn, you will recall, was decorated by President Roosevelt during his fifth term for her morale building during the war when she wrote to l l7 boys in the service. Mr. Suter is beginning to look worried for fear we won't be out of the building by one o'clock. Arthur Frew and Rose Nelson are hiding behind the potted palm so they will be on hand to greet Stewart when he arrives. Frances Gimbel and Teddy Golden, owners of Gimbel and Golden, Inc., suggest that we get a gang together and go up to Pat Coen's FLY- lNN , located on the former site of the Englewood Golf Club. Jean Canner, Jeanne Button, and Dotty Gody think it a good idea. Others of the party fly down to Drooly Dottie's in Cuba. This is managed by Dotty Eisenman and Winnie Cahill. As we leave we see asleep on the curb none other than Arnold Bader. Poor fellow! He was probably too tired to get to the dance-always a hard worker! Note to the reader: lf you think THlS is bad, just picture us in ANOTHER ten years. C!a.u2JiZZ...- Now it's been a sly old custom Ever Since Eve For grads to will their valuables when they leave. Therefore, know ye, all the nation Of the validation of this, our last will, good or bad, Which disposes of all we had-practically! Item I First of all within this will, We leave our shoes for juniors to fill. 'Tho worn and tattered from frequent use With this rationing on we have an excuse.
