Leon High School was established later in 1911, holding 400 students both grammar and high school. Horance Van Brunt, Everitt Lewis, now deceased and D. C. Dawkins only surviving member, were the only 3 graduates of 1907. n00 0000 UBI' 1 - E ' 1 'Y 0 .1-1 ig Y- V- Y.,..,g? Between 1953 and 1955, students were transferred to a new building excluding the seventh and eighth grades. The Emblem of Leon remains the same: an old English L held up on either side by a lion. The school colors red and white, signify courage and loyalty. Leon stands tall and proud on her Golden Anni- versary. Table of Contents Foreword . . . Dedication .... It Was fifty years ago that the first school, named for Florida's famous, Ponce de Leon, was founded in this county. Since its estab- lishment, Leon has graduated many distin- guished and honorable persons who pro- moted themselves to high achievements. Students of Leon have always strived to maintain a genuine honor, esteemed sports- manship, and good conduct in all phases of school life. As students of Leon turn each page of his or her annual, We, the members of the annual staff, hope that everyone will look toward the future with promise and look back at the past with treasured memories of Leon's Golden Anniversary. X 1957 dedication There he stands With his ruler in hand, That fellow you see is really quite a man. He has a sense of humor, that makes an atmosphere, Friendly and contagious for all those Who are near. Those days We have spent in Prablems together, Were rough going sometime just like the Weather, But in presenting our annual to our teacher best of all, Our yearbook beckons and to you makes its call. Our 1957 Dedication to someone hard work- ing but fun, The one and only Prablems teacher, Mr. Malcom Longsdon. Approximately 95 students make up the band, under the direction of Mr. Oliver Hobbs, now in his 7th year at Leon. As a morale builder, the band is always on hand at pep rallies, and football games. It heads the pep pa- rades, sponsors an assembly, and plays at the annual May Party and at all of the Graduation exercises. As a pride builder it is often called upon, as honor, to lead city, state, county, or federal parades. It has upheld the pride of the school by earning Superior ratings at both district and state music festivals for the last seven years. It also presents an Annual Spring Concert. There is a Comradeship within the organization that is strengthened by the support of the student body, the faculty, and the Band Parents Association. The loyal- ty, good sportsmanship and hard work are a necessary part of the school. BATCHELOR, SPONSOR Varsity Cheerleaders PAYE NORA w J Leon's 1956 Varsity Football Before the 1956 football season got underway, sports writers and prognosticators around the Big Bend predicted a great year for Leon's Lions. Despite the loss of last year's many stand-outs, defensively as well as offensively, Coach Roger Englert had returning Gene Page, Ronnie Simpson, and Charles Clark, three starters for two previous seasons. Using this as a back-bone, the former Missouri half-back and line coach Fred Snider built a team that wound up the regular schedule with a respectable 6 won, 4 loss record, plus a crack at the N. E. C. crown in a championship tilt with Fletcher High of lacksonville. As a result of the year's efforts, Gene, Charles, and Guard Larry Roberts were selected to the All Big Bend first team. Gene and Charles also gained a berth on the N. E. C. eleven. At the annual football banquet following the season, Bonnie received the Bobby Benson Most Valuable Player award, hon- oring his many contributions to the football year.
