T80 rf: is . XTR K ll! Y N harbor memories dear Everything for which Leon stands, and everything Leon is, may be found Within the lines of the Alma Mater. To the ad- ministration, fac- ulty, students, and townspeople, Leon means good sportsmanship, loyalty, leadership, and academic opportunity. She holds high the ideals of truth, scholarship, and friendship. The Alma Mater was written in 1934 by Coach Charles Henry Blake Clark during his first year at Leon, The music for the Alma Mater is a medly of college tunes including the Cornell Alma Mater. The Alma Mater means much to the school and to the students. It should be sung with a feel- ing of indebtedness to our Alma Mater, Leon High School. To You, Mrs. Marie Pilcher Always busy, but never too busy, To lend a helping hand. Whether the problem is big or small VV eire sure youill understand. A teacher, counselor, leader, friend, And, to all, a guide. No matter where We may stray Your influence will be by our side. You teach your students the English of life, On what to do and say, As well as grammar, poetry, and such, A lesson every day. So, as this year of ,56 Comes near to an end We dedicate our book to you Our never forgotten friend .... dedication Page 5 X Q +P Q A XS Y N X , Y ' x 'flu 1 X 'V 'L K? ,, fy gr 5 X I f EFL. f ix . For the second time in the history of Leon, the Lions challenged an eleven from Tennessee. Morristown, one of the biggest school teams in the South, out-scored Leon 25-6. An interstate rivalry was started with the contest against Moultrie, and the Lions will be seeking revenge next season for the 9-7 defeat by the Georgia team. A team from Dothan, Alabama, saw defeat at the hands of Coach Roger Englert's Leon eleven by the score of 13-0. In intrastate play the Lions defeated Perry which experienced its first year as a Northeast Conference team-the score, 32-0. Leon's other N. E. C. games were with Live Oak C7-1355 Gainesville C37-OD, Lake City Q12-GD, and Ocala C13-13D. Other Florida opponents were Panama City C0-65 and Pensacola C6-242. Although the record shows Leon with a losing season, the Lions produced a winning team in sportsmanship and spirit. Many of our 1955 Lions received honors for their achievements on the gridiron. Earning positions on the All Big Bend area team were: Backs, Bob Carnes and Gene Page, linemen, Dave McCullough, Charles Messer, and Captain Lloyd Griflith. Carnes, 165-pound Star halfback, also earned a position on the All-State and honorable mention for the All-Southern and All-American teams. At the annual football banquet, Carnes was named Most Valuable Player, receiving the Bobby Benson trophy. Captain Lloyd Griflith received the Tallahassee Quarterback Club's annual sportsmanship award. Fullback Howard Nichols was elected captain for next season. 150A ,--, , , V N Bartow Rainey and Dick Kuersteiner served as JC'Cl4 W0ll4eV Und Bob COOPGV Completed the ClU0FfGf football managers. of mCll'1GQ9I'S. 0---W-----M---.--.-.-1.--..-N.......uW..... ..., .N .,....... ... .....-..... ...... ..W,,.m.,,.. as ,.,....., .am ..,.. -,..........e...,.....- ...... Hampered by in- juries to key players, the Lions were finally stopped, bowing 67-55 to the state champion Miami Senior team in the semi-finals of the State AA Tournament. Prior to that time, however, the Lions had laid undisputed claim to the City Championship, Big Bend Area Championship, District I Class AA Championship idethroning Pensacola for the first time in ten yearsl, and the overall Northeast Conference Championship for the second successive year. This year's team had the highest offensive average in Leon history, scoring, on the average, an even seventy points per contest. The average could have soared much higher, but, in fully half the games, the starting five sat out a good portion of the playing time, while the reserves CLeon also had one of its strongest benchesl took over. This also cut the players' individual scoring averages, but all five starters averaged over ten points per game, an all-time record and one few teams any- where can claim. Also for the first time Leon had five players scoring over 200 points and seven over 100. The 99 points Leon scored against Gainesville set two rec- ords: the most points ever scored by a Leon team in any game and the most Leon has ever scored in a NEC game. The 1956 squad also left a couple of streaks for the next year's team to work on. Leon has now won its last 24 regular season games and has claimed the last 23 contests played in the Leon gym. Coach Stoutamire looks to another good season next year, as this year's junior varsity compiled a 15-1 mark. In four years at the helm, Coach Ioe Wilcox has guided his junior varsity squads to 59 victories against only 5 defeats, Robert Perkins i6'l guardl , better known as Squirrel, teamed with Cash to form the Lions' fine guard combi- nation. The passessor of perhaps the finest jump-shot in this area, and also deadly on a set shot, he racked up 252 points in 23 games. Squirrel, a 2-year letterman, was named to the All Northwest Florida team and the second All Big Bend team. Buddy Cash l6'l guardl , the i955- 56 Captain, did most of the Lion's ball-handling and excelled on defense. Playing in all 24 games, he was second in total pointswith 257, for a lO,7 average. The i955-56 Basketball squad was coached by JV Coach Joe Wilcox and Varsity Coach Claude Stoutamire. ketball Dave McCullough l6'6 centerl another 2-year letter- man, was the Lion's highest scorer. Playing in all 24 games, he racked up 383 points for a l6.0 average. Dave was picked on the All-State tournament team and the All-Big Bend first team. Peter Lund i6'8 centerl this season was known at Leon as a giant among giants. A formidable rebounder, and good defensive man, Pete also scores well. l-le tallied l5l points in 22 games. He has another season of eligibility, and Coach Stoutamire is expecting great things from the big pivotman. Donnie McCreary l6'2 forwardl was one of Leon's best rebounders, and a top-flight scorer, tallying 208 points in I9 games, A two-year lettermon, Donnie made All Northwest Florida team and received honorable mention on the Pensacola Journal's all-state team. Although he missed five games due to injuries, Bobby Sharkey l6'5 forward! was recognized as one of Leon's top performers, a sterling rebounder and defensive star, and an outstanding point-maker, tallying 2l5 points in I9 games, Bobby was named to the All-Northwest Florida team. Bobby Crooks l6'l guardl was a valuable reserve, playing in I6 games. A good rebounder, a good de- Steve Long l5'l l guardl, was the shortest Lion on the team this year. This hustling little guard played in ten games, just a Junior, he will return next year. Bob Carnes l6'l guard-forwardl, a two-yeor letterman, was probably the top reserve in the state. Bob played in 22 games, starting or seeing major action in ll. A good floorman and defensive scrapper, Bob was also a scoring threat, scoring lll points. Page 64 5 fensive man, and at times a scoring threat, Bobby could have started on almost any team Leon faced. . . . ITI 0 I' 6 Richard Husband l6' forwardl, playing his first year of basketball, played in I2 games. Just a Junior, Richard returns showing promise. Jerry was one of five Leon players capable of dunking the ball. Captain Buddy Cash leaps for a basket in Quincy game. Mike West i6'2 guardl was a transfer from Bradenton, playing his first season at Leon. Mike is one of the two lettermen who will return next season. The band is one of Leonis most active organizations and one of which Leon can justly feel proud. For the sixth year, under Mr. Hobbs, direction, the band has received superior ratings in the District and State festivals. Over the state the band is recognized as one of the foremost. The band is also an essential part of school and community activities. During football season the band partici- pates in numerous pep rallies, parades, and half- time shows. Also the band presents an annual concert and sponsors an assembly program, plus providing traditional music for the May Party and graduation. Mr. Hobbs received his B. A. degree in Music Education from the University of Kansas. In 1936 he became affiliated with the music pro- gram in public schools in Lawrence, Kansas, be- coming director of bands there. In 1950 he accepted the position as director of the Leon Band. Since 1945 he has been associate director of the F. S. U. Summer Nlusic Camp. He is president-elect of the Florida Bandmasters Association for 1956-57. MR.
