THEODORE M. KUCHARSKI Prmclpal The famous American educator Horace Mann once said: A human being is not, in any proper sense, a human being till he is educated. Do not let yourselves be fooled, however, by those charming pictures your admiring relatives take of you in your cap and gown at your high school graduation. A high school diploma is not the label to paste on a finished product of education. A graduation is a commencement-a beginning of the process of becoming edu- cated among other things. Some of you will continue the process of becoming educated in the classrooms of some institution of higher learning. Do not be misled into thinking you have therefore found a pleasant or efficient four year short-cut to becoming Horace Mann's definition of a human being. Think of the experience of the prominent citizen who rebelled at the sight of the great number of courses his son would be expected to take at a certain college. The father sympathized with his son's desire for a quick education. The college president gave them this answer: Certainly he can take a shorter course. It all depends on what he wants to make of himself. When God wants to make an oak He takes twenty years, but He only takes two months to make a squash. How many years must be required to make an educated human being? All the years that a longer life expectancy is bestowing on man by the efforts of those who continually educate themselves-and the rest of us-in the best ways to live and prosper. Keep that goal before you-whether you go to college or not-strive for it con- stantly-that the end of your days may at last find you a human being-educated at last-rich in wisdom. climb if
