LILLIAN RICKER To Miss Ricker, our Dean of Girls, who through her warm personality, diversified talents, and sincerity of purpose, has been an inspiration and guide to us all, we also dedicate with gratitude and appreciation, our 1958 yearbook. LEFT TO RIGHT: Dr. Albert Menard, Mr. Francis McCann, Mrs. Dorothy Ricker, Mayor Laurie J. Cormier, Superintendent of Schools Martin L. Moran, Dr. Aaron Simon, Mrs. Geraldine Wheeler, Mr. George O'Toole. We express our thanks to Superintendent Martin L. Moran for his many efforts on our behalf. We shall always remember him as a person to whom we can turn in time of need. The class of 1958 wishes Mr. Moran all of the success he so richly deserves. MR. KUCHARSKI Prom the Principal What thoughts are in the minds of a high school graduate who looks forward to assum- ing adult responsibilities in a world where tre- mendous events are taking place daily and even more tremendous events are predicted for tomorrow? We are told that we must have more skilled scientists in order that the United States of America may not find itself at the mercy of enemies wielding weapons of unimagined destructive power, nor be left behind in the race to conquer space. Perhaps some of you will contribute to our scientific know-how and make us very proud of you. Obviously, however, not all of you will qualify for this type of service to your country. May ! suggest a contribution that all of you can make? “Thou shalt love thy neigh- bor as thyself.” Obedience to that command- ment could effect greater wonders in the world than anything science can achieve. Let no prejudice take root in your own thoughts. Seek to understand people close to you and the distant people of the world. Want for all men the good things you want for your- self. Having first made sure that in thought and deed you have made yourself worthy of peace and prosperity, pray for these things for the whole world. “More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams a4 of,” Tennyson said. Against the forces that threaten the world with destruction, let us set the greater force in the power of prayer. MR. JOHN F. MR. ALDRICH V. MRS. MARY MRS. MiRIAM L. Wise old Benjamin Franklin said, “The man who has mastered a trade owns an estate.” Surely, the fascinating developments of this century will attest to the truth of Franklin’s perceptiveness. In such diversified fields as plastics, home construction, die making and tool production, to mention but a few, the American tradesman has exercised an imagina- tion and applied a talent which has contributed immeasurably to the prosperity of the world and the defence of this country. No knowl- edgeable citizen can conceivably discount the trade training movement in this varied and sometimes provocative era. This year Saxton Trade High School sends forth the largest and most intensively trained class in its history. A strong corps of expertly trained instructors has worked industriously to cultivate competence and reliability within the minds and hearts of the graduates. | extend a hearty wish for endless success and great personal happiness to the members of the Class of 1958. YVES Definite ideas strongly expressed—earnest stu- dent disposed toward serious thinking—faithful ad- vocate of the Democrats. Fertile mind under an unruffled exterior—candid in the tradition of Harry Truman. Cass Aeéstory Sophomore Year (‘’55-'56) The first day we entered L.H.S., we were “shaking in our boots.” The first week or so was very nerveracking, but gradually this feeling left us and we, the class of ‘58, became full fledged members of L.H.S., although we still had to sing, dance, and carry back trays once in a while. Five minute speeches were our biggest worry and we were all surprised to find out how really easy it was to give them. The first big thrill of our sophomore year was when some of the boys in our class got into the Thanksgiving Day Game. L.H.S. was victorious in that game and it made us feel quite proud. The rest of our sophomore year ran along quite smoothly. We participated in the various sports and became part of the team. As our sophomore year came to an end, we elected our class officers for our junior year. Jimmy Gately was elected our President, Fred Spring our Vice-President, Rita Lisciotti our Sec- retary, and Kent Carluccio our Treasurer. We ended our sophomore year knowing that we would begin our junior year with just as much enthusiasm as when we began our first day of school at L.H.S. Junior ('56-'57) After a short summer vacation our class was again together at L.H.S. In September we chose our Junior Cheerleaders. They were Ginny Bur- nap, Joyce Wheeler, “Bing” Toolin, and “Bunnie” Marshall. In October we held our first big event, the spaghetti supper. Thanks to our advisors, Miss Hartnett and Mr. Christopher and all the members of the committees, our first event was a big success. January marked the beginning of a new year and also the beginning of new and thrilling events for us. The first was the Winter Carnival. Also, we had the opportunity to see how the businesses of our city were operated by ob- serving B.I.E. Day. Finally, after a long year of studying came the biggest social event of the year, the Junior- Senior Prom. Everyone had an enjoyable time dancing to the music of George Kaye and his orchestra. As we left our Junior Year, we were Idoking forward to our final year at L.H.S. Senior Year (‘57-'58) As the fall of 1957 drew near, the students of the class of 1958 realized how little time there was before graduation. There was much we wanted to do before we graduated; so as soon as we were adjusted to the routine of our schoolwork, we began to make preparations for our first event of the year, the Senior spaghetti supper. We all wished to make this supper the best ever, since this was to be the last one we would have during our stay at L.H.S.; and due to the efforts of our classmates it proved to be a great success. Our football team did a great job this year, winning four games and losing three. Although it was sad that we lost our Thanksgiving Day Game, the boys had done their best, and we were still proud of them. The football season having come to an end, mid-year exams became our next objective. During the weeks that we studied in preparation for them until the time we took them, we planned no special events. Once the mid-years were over, however, we began planning for one of the biggest dances of the year, “Cupid’s Court.” We nominated var- ious pupils for the King and Queen of the ball, choosing four couples. We then voted for the ones we thought best-suited for the honor. We patiently awaited the night of the dance for the results of our balloting. James Gately was chosen our King, and Peggy Cranson, our Queen. The other three couples became Royal Attend- ants. They were Richard Robichaud and Susan Whitney, James Cannavino and Janet Bell, and Edward Mahoney and Brenda Marshall. The Crown Bearers were James Gardner and Joyce Wheeler. After the crowning of the King and Queen by Principal Theodore M. Kucharski, there was a Grand March led by the King and Queen, the Attendants, and the Crown Bearers. L.H.S. was very proud of its basketball team this year and had every right to be. The team won 15 out of 15 games, finishing off the season undefeated and setting a record in the basketball history of L.H.S. The choosing of representatives for Student Government Day and D.A.R. award was another milestone which our class reached when we chose Harry Christie and Peggy Cranson as our representatives. Usually the senior class chooses its class motto at the end of the senior year, but our class de- cided to choose it at the beginning of the year in order to abide by its message “If God Be With Us, Who Shall Be Against Us?’ This year the Senior-Junior Prom was held on Friday evening, May 9, at City Hall. This was our biggest prom of the year, and we tried to make it our best. The biggest event of our senior year was the Senior Play. This year we chose the French farce “An Italian Straw Hat.” The play was about a lady who had her Italian straw hat eaten by a horse. This event led to many other humorous incidents until her hat was replaced by one exactly like it. It was a five-act play done in the fashion of the old time theater which had the audience rollicking in their seats, both during and after the performances. The play was pre- sented on two nights, April 23 and 25, with a different cast for each night. If it weren't for the efforts of our director, Mr. Joyce; our produc- tion manager, David Pierce; our technical direct- ors, Earl Divoll and Ronald Stebbins; and the en- tire casts, the play wouldn‘t and couldn't have been the success it was. The next-to-the-last event of the year was our Senior Reception, which was held at the City Hall on Friday night, June 13. Of course, it was a very joyous event, but a hint of sadness pre- vailed, since it signified our senior year would soon be coming to a close and everyone would be going their different ways. Graduation—Oh, we had all been looking for- ward to it for such a long time, and here it was. No more dragging ourselves out of bed at seven in the morning in order to greet our teachers at L.H.S., no more P.M. sessions, no more deten- tion, no more L.H.S. Now we are all on our own, and the future is up to us. However, we will always remember our motto, “If God Be With Us, Who Shall Be Against Us?” M..
