' f . { i ; Hy : j OUR THEME If you were to look through this book without first knowing the purpose of it, you might wonder at the sanity of those who put it together because you would find odd titles and perplexing art work, all part of the theme which helps to unify the book. We have been working and socializing together for the past three years to prepare ourselves for the world beyond the protecting arm of the class room. To summarize it briefly, we have been “building for our future”. To represent this idea in a concrete fashiqn we have compared ourselves to an actual construction company. The School Committee have laid the plans for the project; our principal is the corner stone from which everything develops. The teachers are the Executive Suite to guide us and to see that we are on the right track. Our classmates are the workers and we have officers or foremen to organize us. When we graduate, the job will be done and it will be time to start on another one as we work our way down Life’s road. Appleton, Nilo Tocci. Front row, left to right: W. Herbert Green, Mayor Ralph W. Crossman, Mrs. Alphonsine A. Carluccio. SUPERINTENDENT WILLIAM B. APPLETON, A.B., Ed.M. Without the constant guidance of our school committee, we could never have built so solid a foundation upon which to base our future. We have pictured them here as the actual plans which are so vital to our success in high school. It is to this committee that we owe our sincere grati- tude for laying the plans of the first lap of our journey in life. . To William B. Appleton, our Superin- tendent, we wish to express our thanks. His expert planning and counseling proves that he places our welfare before his own. His keen sense of humor and countless anecdotes have kept us amused at past assemblies and graduations. Surely we have been fortunate to have such able and willing assistance in our many successful projects throughout our high school years. OUR CORNERSTONE During your years at Leominster High you have often heard it said that you are the citizens of tomorrow. Somehow that did not have much meaning to you as sophomores, juniors, and during much of your senior year. Suddenly you find yourselves high school graduates who are no longer able to lean on your teachers for assistance. Many of your problems must be solved by you, and how you handle these problems will show how well you handled the education that was available to you in the past twelve years. Remember, the education that you have received is merely a key which is to be used by you to open doors of opportunity. The future of our country is in the hands of you people. May you use the education that you have to good advantage so that we will continue to flourish in a free America. SJ keodsu Hecetiarete Above we have pictures of some of our teachers as they appear outside the classroom. Many of them do interesting and worthwhile things. We would like to mention especially Mr. and Mrs. Elmer J. Bucknell, who are pictured here with Maurice Afoufa, the boy whom the French Club brought to America to live and have our opportunities for a year. Maurice has had a wonderful visit in America seeing places out West as well as our cities of the East, such as New York, Boston, and Washing- ton, D. C. He has been a student like the rest of us and done the same things we do with his wide circle of friends. We are indebted, however, to the Bucknells, who have taken him into their home and treated him like a son. Because of this Maurice could never feel lost or alone and he has had the chance to see how our American families live. It has been a rich and satisfying experience for all of us to see the dream of having a foreigner come to live with us be- come a reality. We will never forget the French Club projects that helped to raise the money for the undertaking and we will never forget the wonderful times we have had with Maurice. We wish him the best of everything in life and we hope that this will be another step in promoting lasting friendship be- tween America and France. First row, left to right: Henry B. Fenton, Miss M. Joyce, whose unequaled ability and patience have made our high school years outstanding and memorable. How can we thank him for the profound imprint he has made on our lives! As a teacher he has more than excelled in bringing to the classroom friendliness, cooperation, and enjoyment. He has not only given his students knowledge in their subjects, but something more important, an insight into the psychological behavior, customs, and manners of peoples all over the world. Without his guidance and interest our senior play and the senior plays of the past could never have been accomplished so professionally, and could never have stimulated so much school spirit and public interest. Mr. Joyce, we the class of ’55, salute you. OUR ADVISOR We, the class of 55, wish to express our gratification to George A. Peck, who has been our class advisor for the past three years. During these eventful, happy times, he has stood behind us,helping us with the many problems which have con fronted our class. He has given unlimited time and patience in the executing of our school projects, always giving us his advice and experienced counsel concerning our proms, spaghetti suppers, our senior assem- bly; and above all he has helped make our graduation the best ever. To you, Mr. Peck, we give our never-ending gratitude and friendship. After our initiation by the seniors, the juniors welcomed us with the annual sophomore party. A record hop was held; entertainment and refreshments were provided. Our next ordeal as a class was our first five-minute speeches which continued throughout the years. Then came the privilege of electing a set of foremen to guide us through the year. They were James Moran, presi- dent; Richard Comeau, vice-president; Karen Swanson, secre- tary and James Curtin, treasurer. Our class was well repre- sented by our president in the interclass spelling bee held in the assembly hall each year. We were invited to participate in the Winter Carnival events. Sophomores received second prize in the sculpturing contest. Sophomore ski contestants gave a fine exhibition of their skills in the slalom, cross-country, and down-hill events. After a vacation from school we were together again as juniors to continue our work as a class. One of our first privileges was to elect our junior cheerleaders, who were Rita D'Innocenzo, Rita Bilodeau, Fayette Kennard, and Claire Mazzaferro. That year we were hosts to the incoming sophomores. Music was provided by Phil Valera’s band. A variety show and refreshmnets were furnished. Again we selected our leaders for the year to come. Robert Ricker, who later left for the service, was elected president; Richard Comeau, vice-president; Karen Swanson, secretary; and James Curtin, treasurer. Our first project as a class to raise money was a spaghetti supper. It was a huge success. For the past nine years the French Club has been working hard to sponsor a French student. Just before Christmas, during our junior year they brought Maurice Afoufa to this country. Maurice, familiar to the entire student body, re- mained to graduate with us. The junior assembly in the form of a variety show con- sisted of our class’s exceptional talent. Janet Bailey in dance routines and acrobatic stunts, Rose Johns singing in her rich soprano voice, Alan Fraser at the piano, and Eddie Selig as CLASS HISTORY master of ceremonies were a few of the participants. Phil Valera’s band concluded the program with a jam session that made the whole school rock. One of the outstanding social events of our second year on the hill was our junior prom. We danced to the music of Frankie Dee’s orchestra. Following the prom almost every- one went to the Town and Country Club in Princeton or to the Meadows in Framingham. Our class held its annual career day. We visited various factories, schools, and companies in Leominster. Before our summer vacation began, the class voted to have an outing. Crane’s Beach was the designated spot. We left on three Turner buses at eight thirty, Sunday morning, the thir- teenth of June. When we arrived there everyone prepared for a day of sunning and swimming. Although it was cool, we all got a good burn and took many pictures. After all the girls on the beach had been thrown into the icy ocean, we started the long trip home. This was the final social event of the season. Three months later we were to begin our last year of working and building together. CLASS HISTORY Upon our return to the hill in September, our first task was to elect a group of officers who would pilot us over the un- charted course for 54 and ’55. Richard Comeau, a diligent and dependable leader, was chosen president. Richard Denio, “The boy from Penny's’, who has such an outstanding per- sonality, was elected vice-president. Rita Bilodeau, one of our cheerleaders, was elected secretary, and Fayette Kennard, another cheerleader, was voted treasurer. After our third straight football victory over Fitchburg on Thanksgiving Day, there was an outstanding victory dance at the Recreation Center, sponsored by the Leominster Recreation Youth Council. L.H.S. students provided enter- tainment: a bathing beauty contest and a parody on Con- cetta’s Restaurant. We danced to Herb Howard's orchestra until twelve. In February the student body was treated to the most stupendous show of the year and the senior class assembly. Janet Bailey, Leominster High’s plastic girl, danced again this year. Bev and Connie Day sang a duet. Later, Connie teamed up with Rose Johns for another rendition. Both Alan Fraser and Eugene Rosen entertained us with piano solos. Don Martin, famed comedian of the senior class, gave his “Three Dickie Birds and a Chick” were great. Margaret Pauley, the Chick, Dick Comeau, Dick Denio, and Dick Cutter, the three Dickie Birds, made up this barbershop quartet. The grand finale was a hilarious impression of T.V. commercials. beach scene from the early 1900's. The girls were dressed in old-fashioned bathing suits while two boys sat up on the wall as life guards. The girls did a dance to the tune of “By the Sea”. Following this they went down into the audience and selected a group of boys to dance with them. The Winter Carnival, the greatest social event in Senior High this year, was held January 28th and 29th. Unfortunate- ly there was no snow but there was skating. A figure skating contest as well as a boys’ inter-class hockey game was held at Roche’s pond on Saturday afternoon. Sylvia Mason won the trophy for the skaters with two underclassmen as runners up. The senior boys won the hockey game 3-2 in competition with the junior class. The semi-formal Winter Carnival Ball climaxed the week’s events. Our principal, Theodore Ku- charski, crowned Janet Sicard queen and Stan Navaroli king. The members of the royal court were Fayette Kennard and Rita D'Innocenzo, queen’s attendants, with Brian Langen and Richard Comeau as attendants to the king. Following the grand march at about eleven o'clock, everyone went to the Sterling Inn. The turn-out was the largest of any formal held. On February 16th we held our second spaghetti supper, served from five-thirty through eight o'clock. This event proved to be one of the largest financial successes of the class. This year our senior class produced a Swedish play by Selma Lagerlof. On April 27th and 29th “Spring is Forever” was given its American premiere. With a double cast of characters and an industrious production staff, its success was assured from the beginning. In May we held the Senior-Junior Prom. This was our last big affair before graduation. For the past three years we have been working hard to build for our futures and now we will go our separate ways. Many people short or tall Enjoy the game of basketball. This sport requires a lot of skill, Found in players on the “Hill”. Can you slam the ball a mile? If you can, it’s big league style. ‘Though you cannot make a run, Playing softball will be fun. We've watched the boys and we've decided Track’s for us—don’t get excited! Around the field we'll run with speed Just so we may take the lead. With skin off knees and bumps on legs You just can't miss those hockey pegs. They may make sticks and may make fouls, But sure enough they've won, by howls. ‘Though these are just a few of the skills They free a person’s mind from ills. We miss the snow flakes and many of our win- ter sports. Although there were no skiing conditions this year, we were fortunate to have beautiful skating weather for our annual Winter Carnival. The ice hockey game, a three to two senior victory over the juniors, and a girls’ individual figure skating contest were the secheduled events that took place in the afternoon at Roche's Pond. For the first time, the Carnival, sponsored by the Student Cabinet, was climaxed by a semi-formal ball with Frankie Dee's orchestra at the City Hall Audi- torium. Trophies were awarded by Miss Jeanette Di Paoli to the winners of the skating contests. Richard Comeau accepted the award for the seniors, while Sylvia Mason received the trophy for the figure skating contest. Mrs. Sheila Rockwell, John McNaney, and John Rogers were the faculty advisors for the whole day. Our principal, Theodore M. Kucharski, crowned the King and Queen, Stanley Navaroli and Janet Sicard. The court attendants were Rita D’Innocenzo, Fayette Kennard, Richard Comeau, and Brian Langen. After the grand march the record-breaking crowd congregated at the Sterling Inn—a perfect finale for a truly great social and financial success. 584,55. 36,0 tbe. 60,.08.89. St. $4.
