“TN 233456 bie | a S Bay re we i i” ui uae . i fia Shuombindt 38118002233456 Leominster Public Library Js an LGD The observance of the Fiftieth Anniversary of both the Leominster High School and the MAGNET is the theme of our Yearbook. Throughout the book we have tried to carry an “anniversary” spirit. We feel that the art work on this and the pages that follow, presents the theme very well. Our class wishes continued success to Leominster High School, our “alma mater.” DEDICATION We, the Class of 1954, affectionately dedicate our Yearbook to our former classmate Alice Louise Foss. We can never forget her contribution to the happiness of our school years through the warmth and humor that made her such a fine friend and companion. We know that our class and our school still mean a great deal to Alice; we remember gratefully and with pride her co-operation in many student activities. Alice will always be remem- bered for her fine spirit and everlasting courage. OUR ADVISORS We, the Class of 1954, wish to express our most sincere thanks to our Class Advisors, George Peck and John Rogers, who have devoted many hours to us during our three years on the Hill. Whenever our class has held a meeting, they have given up their time to be on hand. With- out their assistance our Class elections would not have been so successful. We owe the accomplishments of our class to our worthy advisors. First row, left to right: Judith Pizzuti, Katherine Mahler, Susanne LaClair, Jane Wheeler, Jane Donnelly. It is true that too many of us are satisfied with doing just enough. No one is eager to put himself out to do a little extra unless, as he puts it, “There is something in it for me.” To do our work faithfully and thoroughly is a great asset that will not escape unnoticed. Courtesy is another forgotten trait that should be revived; it goes a long way toward creating a good impression. Very often, because of forgetfulness or thoughtlessness, we neglect to consider the feelings of others. By doing our work well and being courteous to others, we will create lasting, good Verdot 1), Fccharabe 12 impressions. That is just what we are doing at LHS. Our ambassador from France is sixteen year old Maurice Afoufa. To get the complete story, we should go back seven years to the time when we first knew Maurice. An organization in Boston, called American Aid to France, sent the name of Maurice Afoufa with the names of nine others to the French Department here. We adopted six of these children and sent them pack- ages and letters each month. We have kept Maurice ever since. Pupils who sent letters and packages to Maurice have been graduated, but the spirit has been passed on to newcomers by our French teacher, Mrs. Bucknell. Some where along the way the idea of bring- ing Maurice to America arose. Several years ago a cookbook was created by LHS pupils to earn more money to aid and promote this visit. Yes, it was created with one thousand nine hun- dred and ninety-nine duplicates. So with the earnest efforts of many students and our advisor, the cookbooks 45 began journeying to friends, relatives, and strangers, telling of their mission of friendship. We of the Class of 54 are delighted that Maurice arrived in January this year before we leave LHS. He is enrolled as a regular student in the Junior Class. The subjects which he is studying are chemistry, typewrit- ing, art, gym, and English with extra help from the students. We want Maurice to see more of America than its school life. Many French Club members have already invited him to skiing and skating parties, to basketball games, to the movies, and to their homes. We are planning to take him on a tour of some important historic and scenic spots in America. There is much reason why we should feel proud of this adventure, for we are perhaps the first high school in America to sponsor a year’s study for a foreigner. Beyond being an act of friendship on the part of a few people we believe that this is an important inter- national step in promoting a mutual understanding and lasting friendship between the countries of Amer- ica and France. 1951-1952 Let’s go back in vision now through storm and calm, through sunshine and cloud, three years in the history of our class at LHS. Could we recapture the emotion of that first Sep- tember day, we would find ourselves a little timid and suspicious of the Seniors so well scattered in our midst. We couldn't even fool ourselves into pretending that we were unconcerned of them. We soon learned to accept the storms so bountifully bestowed upon us, looking to the future when we would control the wind and the weather. The induction assembly in September introduced us to the club activities, most of which were held on Tues- day. Following the tradition of LHS, we sophomores eagerly (?) awaited the time when we should give our five-minute speeches. The surprising aspect of this first adventure was that many of our five-minute speeches lasted only three minutes for some unknown reason. However, we were proud that Carl Lanza won second prize in the final contest before the school. As a class, were were not without organization, for after the speeches had been given and the x’s counted we accepted the following officers: James Hannigan, pilot; Bruce Wilder, co-pilot; Sandra Castriotta, cor- respondent; La Vonta Watson, collector of revenue. Not all was storm and strife this year. December brought the fulfillment of our plans for the Sophomore Party. The assembly hall itself told the story of a gay time for all. Before long, June was knocking at our door. The clouds were all behind us as we put our foot for- ward to step a little higher next year. 1952-1953 After a short vacation (too short!) our class was again together at old Leominster High. On September 46 CLASS 15, we chose our Junior Cheerleaders. They were Carole Pitts, Judith Coolidge, Ann Turano, and Rose Cudone. A few weeks later Susanne LaClair was chosen Junior Editor of the Magnet. From observation one could almost forecast a profit- able and progressive year for us Juniors. We were no more in the storm, but almost independent enough to glide through the calm atmosphere. During November we held our class elections. The leaders were chose were Carl Lanza, pilot; Natalie Damon, co-pilot; Sandra Castriotta, correspondent; and Leeds Carluccio, collector of revenue. These offi- cers enthusiastically accepted their positions of respon- siiblity to uphold the standard of our class. Also in November another honor came to the Class of ’54. Peter Selig won first prize in the five-minute speech contest. In January the winter sports held the spotlight. The Ski Club made plans for the Winter Carnival and elected Susanne LaClair and Normand Letarte as Jun- ior Chairmen. Also in January we had the pleasure o f seeing the inauguration of President Eisenhower on television in the assembly hall. The Class of 54 was again honored when Leeds Car- luccio took second prize in the essay contest held by the Jewish War Veterans. On April 25, the Junior Prom was held in the city hall. Frankie Dee’s orchestra, the crystal ball, and the grand march led by the officers— all combined to make a gala affair. On May 16, we of the Junior Class had an excellent chance to learn about the community. We observed B.LE. Day and had a chance to see how the factories work. Besides these interesting visits we also had a banquet at Clover Hill Restaurant. HISTORY You see, the elements were all for us, because along with the clear weather we had a favorable tail-wind which boosted us up to great heights. To stop here would mean a nose-dive and disaster. But before leav- ing in June we set the mark for a higher altitude in continuing our journey next year. 1953-1954 On September 9, we took off into fair skies with a plane full of expectations. Didn’t the time fly! Sur- prisingly we started the year with a bang that resound- ed through the halls of LHS. Our remembrance of two years ago was vivid as we applied our authority to the Sophomores. We really didn’t mean to antagonize Mr. Kucharski, our new principal; for it wasn’t long before we heeded his pleading for diplomacy. Soon we had the following chosen as officers of our airline: Barry Watkins, pilot; Natalie Damon, co-pilot; Joan Gentile, correspondent; Leeds Carluccio, collector of revenue. The Class of ’54 certainly has its share of champions. We heartily cheered Mabel Milton as she was present- ed first prize for the speech contest. Everything was set and well planned for the Thanks- giving Day Dance at the Recreation Center. Herbert Howard's orchestra provided the music. In charge of arrangements and worthy of credit for a good time were Barry Watkins, Dennis Duval, Rose Cudone, Daniel Hill, and Leeds Carluccio. Invitations were extended to alumni also. The score of the day, how- ever, was undoubtedly made by the football team, of which we were proud. In the social field James Hannigan and Shiela Regan were voted King and Queen for the evening at TAC on December 6. What a short break our Christmas vacation was. Almost with jet speed we were off again into the blue, leaving '53 behind the horizon and cruising hopefully into ’54. By student votes Carl Lanza was chosen as our repre- sentative to the State House in Boston on Good Gov- ernment Day. Peter Selig was his alternate. Susanne LaClair was chosen by student and faculty vote for the D.A.R. Good Citizenship Prize and a trip to Boston. Catherine Royak was the alternate delegate. In air travel it is sometimes necessary to cancel trips or alter plans because of weather conditions. In plan- ning for our Winter Carnival we were grounded, not because of snow, but for the lack of it. However, we were able to make the trip by changing the route. We could not use the snow sculpturing although Janice Santucci was chairman for the Seniors. Skiing was also impossible. At TAC on February 13, Rose Cudone and Barry Watkins were honored to wear the Winter Car- nival crowns for King and Queen. Susanne LaClair, Rosanna Newell, Donald Gillis, and Paul Martineau were their attendants. Many of us will hold pleasant memories of the Senior Prom, for it was a product of care and prepara- tion by our class officers. Dancing and dinner at Ster- ling Inn were only part of the fun of being with friends and classmates for the evening. Even now we can remember that joyful moment when our plane passed through a gorgeous sunset. Yes, the Senior Play was full of the color and splendor of a sunset sky. As each classmate performed his part for the success of the event it was as though the colors of nature were blended into a beautiful scene. Behind it all we could feel a guiding power working and encour- aging each one. Without the wisdom of Mr. Joyce, the co-operation of Barry Watkins as production manager, and Elfriede Goetz and Natalie Damon as assistants, such an attempt would have been inconceivable. As the title suggests, it was all “As You Like It.” Really, the sunset on our years at LHS was beautiful, but “time waits for no man.” The sun is beginning to rise on a new experience for us. As we each take off on separate planes, let’s hope that we'll sail into fair skies as we go “beyond the blue horizon.” 47 y man Dave W Pat Cowan Paula Mansut Bob Torcoletti Mabel Milton Pete Selig FRO pores a eee see see 2s as ae Gloria Caplett e$ ARTI Sp Joanne Farrel Ds «, a TG - oe = 4 ae y eo ue ee : eee ; Pee en es . ae os Se oe eS. a es aS oa = =a 3 ae f ES ary Imbrian; Dove Ulis PAR OsPati be Ga Deep in the woods, A sly gypsy dwells, And if given some money, The future. he tells.
