MAGNET THEME The theme of our 1953 yearbook is a newspaper one. The caricature that you see throughout the book is of our senior reporter. He reports all the L.H.S. news to our staff. On the “Hill,” besides school work, there are many social events. We, the staff of 53, hope that we have written in an accurate and interesting manner, an account of the events from our first day at Leominster High School until gradua- tion day, three wonderful years later. LEOMINSTER HIGH SCHOOL OSS) DEDICATION . CLASS OFFICERS SENIOR SECTION . CLASS BALLOT . CLASS HISTORY ACTIVITIES SPORTS . DRAMATIC FESTIVAL TABLE OF = CONTENTS oe DED 15G AL EI OgN With deep affection, we, the members of the class of 1953, dedicate our yearbook to Edward Killelea. Throughout his years here on the hill, he has given unfailing service to both the students and the faculty. We know his work has meant a great deal to him, and even though he has left, we know that no one will ever take his place. The dedication of our yearbook is just a small token of our appreciation for all he has done for us. Helping to make our first spaghetti supper a sucess both financially and socially was just one of the numerous kindnesses that he showed us. We wish him happiness and success in whatever he undertakes in the future. A CREED FOR YOUTH IN OUR TIMES I know that I am living in a time of Crisis. I know that I may be called to the far corners of the earth to serve my country and free mankind. I may even have to sacrifice my life, or part of it, in order that others may live in freedom and in peace. I know that three times in this century youth has been called on to fight a “war to end war, yet there is still no peace. I will not let these horrible wars make me cynical. I know that even the darkest periods of history have been brightened by the spirit of brave men and courageous women. I know that in general man has always improved the world in which he has lived. This progress, I know, has been made possible by millions of my fellow- men who have never made the headlines but who have made their corners of earth a little better for having lived in it. I will, therefore, look forward hopefully. I will prepare myself while there is still time for the good life. I will work a little harder than I have to. I will choose wholesome recreation. I will try each day to render some service, even though it may be small. I will remember that the words of the Great Teacher, “He that loseth his life shall find it,’ do not mean that I must die to find life. He means that in forgetting myself to serve others I shall enrich the life which has been given to me. Mr. DWIGHT S. DAVIs, B.S., Ed.M. Principal of Leominster Senior High School WILLIAM B. APPLETON, A.B., Ed.M. Superintendent of Schools Our sincere thanks go to Mr. Peck and Mr. Rogers for their untiriu, efforts in behalf of the Class of 53. Their assistance and advice were most valuable in making our annual spaghetti suppers and all our other class projects successful. FACULTY Ist Row, Left-Right: Elmer J. Buck- nell, Henry B. WASHINGTON CLIPPINGS News was just received that artist SANDRA McMINN was asked to paint President Eisenhower's portrait. Draftsman EDWARD HACHEY has just seen his design for a super jet rocket put into action! The rocket will be used in a fifteen minute trip around the world. The official airline hostesses will be VIRGINIA CANTALUPO and LEANNE WASS. The head pilot chosen to navigate the rocket is JAMES JOY. The secretary appointed was CYNTHIA LANCIANI. W.A.F. Corporal PATRICIA GAUTHIER, Petty Officer OR- LANDO LISCIOTTI, and GEORGE MUNYON, a valuable technician, will be among’ the crew. The efforts of Pilot DAVID MURDOCK and MAR- GARET CATALETA, airline hostess, brought about the rescue of two valuable Navy men, GERALD RICHARDS and ROBERT ROFFEE, who were reported missing. GUY GAUTHIER is inspecting all the meat going into the White House. This is a tremendous job because of the numerous attempts at assassinating the President. 32 ik ? WASHINGTON CLIPPINGS—(Cont.) We hear that GRACIE GRECO is holding down a steady job of designing Mamie Eisenhower’s wardrobe. JOHN BLANCHETTE was seen on board the S. S. United States “As Captain of this great ship.” A top physical therapist, MURIEL DELISLE, and LU- CIEN CAISSE, an important carpenter, have been reported miss- ing. The case is a Naval matter under the supervisions of Admirals ALDEN BACHAND and NORMAN BROOKS. JANET CUTLER has full charge of the recreational pro- g ram at the White House. 33 THE MEDICAL WORLD At the Leominster Hospital GAIL AGNEW and GERRY BLOOD are copping top honors as nursing superintendents. The Red Feather Girl at Burbank Hospital is JUDY BOUVIER. There was quite a bit of competition with ANN ARNOLD and SANDRA STRANG in training there also. We visited the adjoining offices of DONALD BRACANI and JOE LANZA, who we hear are going to be our new school dentists. It was nice to see NORMA VALERI working as their medical secretary. JOANNE CHESTER has a soft job as nurse at the Rec- reation Center. In her spare time you can often see her in the Nurse MARIE CORMIER with her magnificent giggle is a tremendous morale booster to the boys in the veterans’ hospital. Also seen among the graduates of Leominster High was JEAN CONSALVO, one of the dental receptionists assigned to special duty at the recently opened Dental Clinic in Chicago. 34 i q fe THE MEDICAL WORLD—(Count.) ARDATH DEWHURST, NANCY GILLIS, and MA- RION LOLLI are pretty popular nurses at Burbank Hospital from the rumors that we've heard from some of the patients. ALICE REGAN is now public health nurse for our fair city. Helping her out on her tremendous job of keeping the school children clean is JOAN NAYLOR. Nurses SHIRLEY RHODES and JULIE CIPROTTI have been found after a ten-hour search at the Leominster Hospital. They had been testing a new anesthetic and were carried away. SALLY RIDLEY and MARLENE PORTNEY accident- ally stumbled on a cure for chicken pox No. 404. To their dis- may, they found that a cure for chicken pox had already been discovered. CHARLES JOHNS, eminent young surgeon, with the assisting nurse, DORIS BERTHIAUME, operated on HENRY PAQUETTE this morning. To their astonishment they found a small reel of cartoons. Our little flag bearer, PRISCILLA WHITE, is now head nurse of Worcester Memorial. From what I hear, she’s making out pretty well. 35 09 ge THE WORLD OF EDUCATION PAUL LATINI, shop teacher at Oval High School, took his class over to LAWRENCE AMBURGEY’S Carpenter Shop to show his students the art of cabinet making. A United Teachers’ Convention was held in Ottawa, Canada, with teachers present from all over North and South America. Among the honored guests were RONALD SAU- DELLI, outstanding American history teacher, and LORRAINE BROOKS, voted the most popular grade school teachers in | Chile. Also present were ELEANOR BERTHIAUME and RICHARD GAOUETTE. They gave speeches on “The Im- portance of Developing and Training the Mind of a Teenager.” BARBARA STOTTLE, a Tufts alumna, spoke on the “Importance of Fraternities,” while ROBERT NOEL of Becker Junior College spoke on “College Life for Girls.” JANE PARENT received a tremendous ovation from the male part of the audience after talking to the women on “The Importance of Making Your Own Clothes.” CORRINE BURCHSTEAD and ROSANN FEDERICI joined forces after graduating with honors from F.T.C. and have made plans to start an elementary school with PATSY La- POSTA as their principal! ! ! ! 36 ale © THE WORLD OF EDUCATION—(Cont.) ROBERT BETTS, DAVID DAY, and RONALD JO- HANNSON, all of the Coast Guard, were given medals for their valiant service in the line of duty. HENRY RICHARD tried working for his brother for a few years, but gave it up as a lost cause when his buddy, RON- ALD FITZGERALD, persuaded him to go to college with him. There are two vacancies in the public school system. Both JANICE SULLIVAN and PATRICIA ROGERS prefer the kitchen to the classroom. Better money, too... . On the last sports broadcast we heard that The Great Philip Wiggins is playing 9 positions for the New York Yankees. Leominster High School has added two new members to its faculty. They are EDITH WILES, an English teacher, and RONNIE DELLECHIAIE, a math teacher. Lucky pupils!! HELEN MORAN and BETTY COTE, elementary school teachers, skipped school to go down to the Boston Garden to see ANNABELL SPRING and HELEN ALLAIN play basket- ball. 37 2,5 2 —_—- i i THE WORLD OF EDUCATION—(Comt.) We were at Madison Square Garden last night to see an old classmate of ours, ROGER MELANSON, fight for the first time since he won the heavyweight title last September... THE BUSINESS WORLD JOHN HOWARD, who is working with a big accounting firm in New York, and ANGELO CELLI, head professor of math at Columbia University, flew home last weekend for a short visit. It was quite a surprise to these two young men to see SISTINA CAPOCCIA and JUDY BURNAP, two of their former classmates, working as hostesses on the plane. RICHARD GARDNER has just opened a new antique shop. WILLIAM DEL GUIDICE, noted television technician, stated today that the reason so many television sets have been acting up is that NANCY METROS was on the other night and the controls just couldn’t take it. NANCY has her own program now, interviewing student nurses. Just by chance, she had on her program this particular night her old school chums CARO- LYN WHITCOMB and PAULINE LaPIERRE. JOHN KLUMP, who is an agricultural missionary, has begun to take his hobby of photography seriously. He has been seen with the negatives on the Big Business deal between ac- countant ROGER BEDARD and that well known business man WILLIAM DINARDO. He’s just got to stop watching Casey the Crime Photographer! 38 = ue ft THE BUSINESS WORLD—(Cont.) JACKIE SERAFINO, RONALD ROGER’S charming private secretary, was in the Beauty Shop run by CLARA PROJETTI, having her hair done by JENNY GOWDY. CLARA’S assistant was setting her hair for her big date with her boss that night, when she overheard that BARRY JANN- SON had just discovered how to split an atom 15 ways. RICHARD LAFRANCE’S graham cracker business is slowing down since he lost two valuable head engineers, CHRISTIE JOHNSON and WILLIAM DIETSCHE, who were called into the service. MARION NISULA is looking for a maid these days to help with the housework since her book, ‘““How to Trap and Train Baboons,” has become a top seller. FAYE DAVIDSON and ANTONETTA DIFAZIO have joined talents and have opened a beauty parlor in New York on 49th Street. RICHARD “CHEETA” COCCI has just announced that there will be free shoeshines for every person who has three feet. CLAIRE VIENS, BARBARA PIEMONTESE, JOAN WINANS, and PHYLLIS PADOVANO are sharing an apart- ment in New York. From what we've heard they are all suc- cessful secretaries. PAT CLARK has accepted a job as a comptometer opera- tor at the Pentagon in Washington. Her work is top secret and may have some bearing on the Korean War. Ata recent secretaries’ convention held in New York, many alumnae of Leominster High School were present. We saw ANN MITCHELL, ANNA SCIPIONE, EVA POLLASTRI, and GLORIA BILODEAU talking over old times. Al ©) t i VA THE BUSINESS WORLD—(Cozt.) Of course, she received her training in “SAM RIFKIN’S Business School.” JOANN PIZZICONI is also an honor student at his school. EILEEN HOLLAND has recently opened a Physical Edu- cation School for Women Amazons. This should prove to be a great help to the fair sex in leap year. We hear MARY CICCONE, JEAN CABANA, and MAY SHEA have combined forces to form the “Shone Short Secre- tarial Course.” Any applicants???? JANE FAULKENHAM, world renowned beautician, has announced that her long awaited contribution this year is a new hair style called the “Butterfly.” The fly away effect is accom- plished with, surprisingly enough, an eggbeater! Oil king millionaire, TOM DERBY, has just bought ROLAND DORAIS’S patent for his gigantic four decker ice cream scoop. Both men are employing BETTY ELLIS and MARY AVERSA as their private secretaries. LIONEL IRVINE has been able to buy two more gas stations to add to his chain. 42 THE BUSINESS WORLD—(Cont.) MARTHA GLAWSON, wife of a brilliant Boston teacher, is running a prominent home accounting course. One of our old classmates, Reverend WILLIAM HOWELL, was seen going into BILOW’S Boudoir Furniture Store. I guess he was going to furnish his parish house with some of Bill’s fine furniture. Because of his faithful attendance at the movies, DONALD PERKINS was left some shares in the Loew’s great movie syndi- cate. nome WINFIELD MAXIM'S collection of electric trains has fo] gone on display in one of New York’s greatest exhibits of trains. WALTER DAY was seen pushing RICHARD ROBI- os CHAUD'S car towards a service station. The question of the day is, will Robie’s car ever run on its own? Congratulations, boys!! JOE “SKEEZIX” SERAFINI is playing ball with the Boston Celtics. We hear that he is top man around there now. ROBERT NORMANDIN, Korean hero, has returned to Leominster and decided to settle down here. Although ELAINE BELLIVEAU has graduated from F.T.C. she is still working hard for her master’s degree! PHYLLIS CONSALVO, author of that new smash hit, recently went on a tour to Europe. The stunning airline stewardess who was so efficient was none other than her old school chum, JOYCE PETERSON. DALE MICLON was in an accident. Guess he doesn’t mind as long as JACKIE ROBERTS is his cute nurse. ARDENE HICKS formally skated her way out of the sticks. She’s on her way to a brilliant future in the air. Hope those pilots can keep their minds on their job. When RAY LYONS was shipped to East Cunyard he was very much surprised to see none other than his old buddy, GEORGE NORRIS, as his commander. 45 é fi id MISCELLANEOUS —(Cont.) When asked how they enjoyed skating around the world, ALICE BATES and JOAN LaBELLE replied, “We found it quite easy but our skates were very rusty after skating over the Atlantic Ocean.” ARNOLD BASKIN, BERNARD DONAHUE, and LESLIE SKINNER were fined by a game warden of the Maine woods for shooting three flamingos. JIMMY MARRONE, swimming champ, when asked how he felt after swimming the Atlantic Ocean said, “I didn’t mind the sharks nor the waves, but I just couldn’t stand the water in my ears!” JOE DECAROLIS, head football coach at the University of Massachusetts, is back in Leominster this season, looking for prospects for his freshman team. THE WINTER CARNIVAL This year the Winter Carnival Ball was held on February 14th, St. Valentine’s Day, at the City Hall. Assisting her were Rosanna Newell of the junior class and Mar- garet Pauley of the sophomore class. After school on the thirteenth, the sculpturing began. The seniors received first prize with their statue of the “Snow Crop” bear. The sophomores came in second with their “Kool” penguin, and the juniors received third prize for “Muriel” the cigar. The next morning a ski meet was held at the ski tow. After reaching City Hall, which was gaily decorated with crepe paper, we danced to the music of Pat Mulvane and his orchestra. At midnight the music stopped but every- one was still in high spirits. The class pro- ceeded to the Town and Country Club, where a delicious turkey dinner was awaiting us. After the band stopped playing, the juke-box was kept going with nickels, dimes and quar- ters. aa SENIOR PROM “Just look at all the people! How did they ever manage to get such a crowd to the prom?” “Magic. I guess these Senior Girls do have a trick or two up their sleeves, don’t they?” This conversation could very well have been heard on Friday, December 12, 1952. The Senior Prom was in full swing to the music of Frankie Dee and his orchestra, and City Hall was a blaze of lights, crepe paper decorations, and the sparkling crystal ball. One highlight of the evening was the grand march led by President Patsy La Posta and his partner Lillian Smith, followed by the Vice-President Joseph Lanza and Nancy Bobeck, Secretary Rosanne Federici and Barry Janson, and Treasurer Betty Coté and Roger Melanson. : 5 we aes tee ie a HORROR DAY Horror Day—does this conjure up a pic- ture in your mind of Frankenstein and Drac- ulas wandering around? Horror Day at L.HS. is somewhat different but only a very little. L.H.S. horrors are girls who are not allowed to put up their hair the night before and so come to school on Horror Day with straight uncurled hair and wearing jeans and old shirts. Of course lipstick is banned on that day also, to complete an already pretty awful picture. CAREER DAY The annual Career Days were held on November 8, 1950, November 14, 1951, and November 12, 1952. Mr. Robert C. Laserte was in charge of them, and their purpose was to familiarize the students at L.H.S. with various occupations. To do this many people 51 from many different occupations came to our school to talk to us. Career Day is a very valuable day to all on “The Hill,’ and one which should be continued through the years. Gaya Each year the Central Massachusetts Interscholastic Press Association holds two meetings which every member of the Press Club, Magnet Editorial Staff, and the Magnet Business Staff are invited to attend. This year we are honored in having a member of L.H.S., Robert Betts, as treasurer of the organization. At the meetings, previous methods of putting together school papers and yearbooks are discussed. 52 op ote gly Ist Row, Left to Right: George Antonioni, Julie Ciprotti, Nancy Gillis, Susanne La Clair, Sarah Ridley, George Peck. 2nd Row, Left to Right: Carolyn Whitcomb, Lois Moran, Marlene Portney, Joyce Peterson, Marie De Bonville, Sherman Poultney, Edward Selig, Shirley Rhodes, Carl Baker, Joan Gentile, Leeds Carluccio. 3rd Row, Left to Right: Jean Consalvo, Rosanna Newell, Carole Pitts, Judith Burnap, Janice Sullivan, Edith Wiles. She can jump and shout and clap And does her best to boost that score. Marion’s another girl in blue and white. She really gives with the “fight team fight.” She’s full of spirit, vigor and vim That helps our football team win. Quite a lass our Maggie is. Cheerleading really is her biz. She makes an awful lot of noise That really helps our football boys. Carol is a junior yet But cheers with all her might. She knows what she is out to get. She wants those boys to FIGHT. One fine cheerleader is our | Ann. She cheers the very best she can. She helps to boost the team’s morale. You see our Ann is quite a gal. Our other Judy sure is fine When she starts to cheer. She helps those boys go thru that line And score a winning year. Rosy is another one Who is on our team. I tell you she’s a lot of fun And really on the beam. Little Janey may be small, But when she jumps and cheers Why then she is the best of all Despite her younger years. Roseann is a Leominster majorette. She hasn’t missed a ball game yet. Her performances are simply grand. She really leads the high school band. Sandra gains a lot of praise, For strutting in her high school days. She really knows the way to twirl, Which helps to show she’s quite a girl. Another majorette is Jane. She isn’t yet in the hall of fame. Her turn to lead is almost here, For she will lead in the coming year. Our majorette with light ted hair Is never “‘gone’’; she’s really there. Karen started at the age of nine, And the job she’s done is very fine. Philia’s one with plenty of steam. She gives her all to help the team. Now let’s look back: In our junior year there was the Junior Prom, a sophomore party, ushering at the Senior Reception, and of course the play, Victoria Regina. Our senior year was the busiest and best. We had the Senior Prom, the Reception, Graduation, the Banquet, parties, and the fiftieth senior Class play. But before I go on to tell you of our fiftieth play, let me begin at the beginning and bring you up to the present. Let’s see if I can: remember how it started. . . . The class of 1900 was the class that we owe the greatest tribute to, for without them we would not have had the well-organized play that we had this year. The old Leominster music hall, situated where the Recreation Center now stands, was the place where the class of 1900 put on the first play. Nine members of the class presented Me an’ Otis. Members of this class were very downhearted when the evening of the play arrived. Why? Olga Nethersole, the Tallulah Bankhead of the day, was playing a one night stand at the Town Hall. The people of Leominster came through for the class, and a profit of $50 was made. After eight long years, another senior play was presented. The class of 1908 started the ball rolling again by presenting Rachel Baker's Mr. Bob. Every one in the town hoped that this was not the last senior play. 84 The challenge was made and met by the class of 1910, which pre- sented Ben Elliot Palmer’s Out of Town. When Mrs. Sybil Bearse Cook, an English teacher, came to the hill, she saw to it that the annual class play was put on the school calendar to stay. In fact, for quite a time two plays were presented— one in the fall and one in the spring. Mrs. Cook and Miss Sarah O'Connell directed such plays as The Time of His Life, in 1912; The Colonel's Maid and The Catastrophe in 1913; The Toastmaster and a double-bill consisting of The Thirty Minutes for Refreshments and A Cyclone for a Cent in 1914; All Charley’s Fault and The Dea- con’s Second Wife in 1916; Our Wives and W hat Happened to Jones? in 1916; and The District-Attorney and Rose of Plymouth Town in 1917. Because of the First World War and the flu epidemic, there was only one production in 1918, a double-bill consisting of Sally Lunn and The Flying Wedge. From that year to this there has been only one production a year. In 1919 Miss Winifred Shackley became the director of senior plays. The first play directed by her was Esmerelda. Under her direc- tion The Arrival of Kitty, 1920; A Parr of Sixes, 1921; Clarence, 1922; Green Stockings, 1923; The Charm School, 1924; The Whole Town’s Talking, 1925; and Seven Chances, 1926, were produced. The audiences who saw the early plays remembered seeing funny bulges in the curtains, caused by the lack of room. Therefore, the furniture had to be put on the edge of the stage. Because of Miss Shackley, the plays were taken down-town where it was much easier to produce them. The productions were then moved to the May A. Gallagher Junior High auditorium where they have been held ever since. 85 86 The next two productions, The Hottentot, 1927, and Beau Brummel, 1928, were under the direction of Mrs. Elizabeth Welling- ton Sampson. The class of 1929 presented Adam and Eva; and the class of 1930, Bab, both under the direction of John Healy. The class of 1931 gave Come Out of the Kitchen, and the class of 1932, Green Stockings, both directed by Mrs. Burgess. During the depression, many eyebrows were cocked and fore- heads wrinkled, wondering whether or not the box office intake would cover the production cost. W. Neil Kimball, who directed So This Is London, 1933; Skidding, 1934; and Mimick, 1935, is to be greatly complimented on bringing the plays through. When Milestones was produced in 1936, John F. Joyce was named director, a position which he has ably filled ever since, except for the year 1937 when Miss E. Lillian Ricker capably directed Pride and Prejudice. The record shows that the four Shakespearean plays presented were Macbeth, in modern dress, 1939; Romeo and Juliet, 1941; The Taming of the Shrew, 1946; and Hamlet, 1947. Four American premieres were presented: Hatred House, 1938; Seasoned Timber, 1940; Altitude 3200, 1942; and The Beaux Stratagem, 1943. In 1948, Cyrano de Bergerac was presented; in 1949, A Maid- summer Night’s Dream; in 1950, Our Town; in 1951, Androcles and the Lion; and in 1952, Victoria Regina. The tradition of having every member of the graduation class take part in the play was started in 1939 and has held true ever since. The class of 1945 undertook a unique project. They wrote their own production, which they called Greek to You. Our sincere hope is that some day the Leominster High School will have an addition which will include a larger auditorium, so that we may present our class plays in our high school again. It was the fall of 1952. Our faculty advisor, Mr. John F. Joyce, with student directors, Nancy Gillis and Betty Cote, and the produc- tion manager, John Watson, put on their glasses and thinking caps and started to get the play ready. After many meetings, arguments and disappointments, the strained eyes and brains saw a plan emerge. The fiftieth production of the play had to be different. We produced three plays, representing the three great eras of the theater: the Greek, the Middle, and the Modern priods. Antigone, by Sophocles, was the play chosen to represent the Greek Period; The Doctor in Spite of Himself, by Moliere, was chosen for the Middle Period. These two plays were shown on the same night. Saint Joan, by Shaw, was chosen to be the Modern play. Saint Joan was shown on two consecutive nights on a single billing. The reaction to this Drama Festival was amazing. Leominster High School was the first high school in the country to ever attempt anything like it. Best wishes and good luck go to the future classes and the plays they produce. 87 We jHipneciate Your Patronage...
