Young High Honors Honors Though the world be wide, Though its paths be long, We will fill the air With a lusty song! Chorus We stand united in our hearts. One thought our song conveys; We'll always treasure in our minds Our happy high school days! Let the notes resound Through each vale and hill; Let the words inspire Our undaunted will! Chorus Words by Anne Jane Cohen; Music by David Paquette FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY EDITION Originated in the year 1907, the Magnet started as a monthly magazine. It has continued since, except for the years 1926 and 1927 when it was replaced by The Leonine as a class book, and 1928 when no edition was published. The magazine was revived in 1929. It continued through 1942 and 1943, in which years the spring issue was a real year book. In 1944 the magazine was once again discontinued, the year- book superseding it. Leominster High School I94T7 Our Miniature Community Leominster High School, the building where students receive the last phase of their secondary education, which leaves its mark on all future citizens. Our school life is much like municipal activity. Fach class elects its own mayor, or president, who is assisted by a vice-president, a secretary and a treasurer. In addition, a representative from each of the 18 home-rooms in the school, is sent to the weekly cab inet meetings. This body acts as a city council. Under the supervision of school instructors, our student government functions as a true munici- pality. serene WILLIAM B. APPLETON Harvard—A. B. Superintendent of Schools moma to lL. H. 5. in. 1927, Mr. Appleton was principal for ten years. His intelligence, fellowship, abilities, interests, accomplishments, tolerance, and dignity earned him a promotion to superintendent of schools, the position he now holds. Through his fine work, he has proven himself more than worthy of his title. THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE One of the elements that distinctly govern our school life is the school committee. They have control of our studies, our school hours, and even our teachers; therefore they are the ones whom we have to thank for the thriving community which is our school. ' The members of our school com- mittee are: Claude Letarte. Herbert Green. Dr. I. W. Smith— Vice-Chairman Mayor Mathias Lapierre— Chairman William B. Appleton. Mrs. Alphonse Houde. Arthur Harrington. Dr. James V. McHugh. Our Principal ... Our school, like every other public high school, should aim to reflect at its very best the life of the community which supports it. MESSAGE For example, Leominster is a city whose people have their ancestral roots in many lands yet Leominster people act with a singleness of purpose in staging a Welcome Home Day, a Wonkka Scholarship Fund Drive, or a Hospital Day. In school, our teams, our classes and our clubs know no racial, no social, no religious divergencies. In all things that will make our school the best one in the state we are united. The depth of your devotion to L. H. S. will be measured by your continued interest in the school after you have been graduated. Right now we are working for a school building in which Leominster boys and girls may receive an even better education than you, its present graduates, have received. Each of you can help to build a Leominster Senior High School that will meet the needs of our city. The Class of 1947 has set many a high mark for succeeding classes. We look to you with confidence to further our plans for a building which will be a school by day and a community center by night. —D. S. D. Te aN di itt . Bee! mambo - aa THE INSTRUCTORS Our teachers are as much a part of our miniature com- munity as is the building itself. It is mostly through their efforts that we become good citizens, for they are not only educators, but counselors and friends when the need occurs. They are a fine group of teachers, and we will long remember and appreciate their trials and tribulations connected with the instruction of youth. MR. FENTON MISS PIERMARINI IN APPRECIATION We of the senior class, deeply appreciate the labors of Miss Piermarini and Mr. Fenton in assisting our class to become the best. The great successes we have had in proms and i n other activities are largely due to their efforts. Our greatets thanks to them! RS) Jo Bob Wonkka ... TO BOB WONKKA We all admire Bob Wonkka for the courageous spirit he has shown since he was afflicted by the dread disease, infantile paralysis. Since he has been hospitalized, Bob has been missed by his numerous friends, many of whom have visited him frequently. As a token of their friend- ship and in appreciation of his contribution to his class and to the school, the class of 1947 presented him with a radio. The Thanksgiving Football Game was broadcasted directly to him at the Children’s Hospital in Boston where he rooted with the rest of the fans, wishing he could be out on the field, fighting to win the most cherished game of the year. Although an active athlete before polio struck him, he has taken this sickness in stride and is in no way dampened in spirit. 20 Ss 1 Mc ed —_— Ce ACTIVITIES The many organizations at L. H. S. take up a large portion of time in the weekly life of our community. Not only do they provide interesting and intelligent activities for the students, but, also, they advance the welfare of the whole community. Most clubs meet weekly for a forty-five minute period. Officers elected at one of the meetings, lead the clubs. In this way, the students are given a wonderful opportunity to use their own ideas and to work together, promoting better citizenship for future years. Each club offers different occupations. This variety gives the members an excellent chance to indulge in the line of work they like and for which they are best fitted. Each group is supervised by a member of the faculty. Because of the generosity of time and effort put into the clubs by both the students and the teachers, these organizations are always a great success. al ‘ | ‘ 5 7 ‘ % pe. The complete force is made up of two groups: the Editorial Staff and the business Department. The Editorial Staff, composed of boys and girls who are literarily inclined, collects data and pictures on the important happenings around school, and each year combines these features into a book. Miss Elizabeth Colley, Senior English instructor, and Mr. George Peck supervise the activities of the group. Center Front: Paul Goodale. H. S. Press Club. Under the capable guidance of John F. Joyce, faculty adviser, the Press Club turned in its weekly sheet of ‘Senior High Notes,’’ published in the Leominster Enterprise, on a weekly deadline, sponsored an assembly which is to become an annual feature at L. H. S., provided a plentiful source of information on all school activities, and served generally as an aid to the student body and faculty alike in promoting other school functions and organiza- tions and in gathering news. With the aid and advice of the editorial board of the Leominster Enterprise, the ‘Senior High Notes’’ have reached a pinnacle of success during 1946-1947. Always highlighted by a large school news story or a ‘‘Scoop,’’ Press Club's sheet also contained notes on assemblies, alumni, club activities, reports from the Principal, Faculty, and Student Cabinet, and other special features. The ‘Training Table,’’ unique sports column of the sheet, covered school athletics and the ‘Inside dope”’ on L. H. S. sports, and was always a popular feature of the ‘‘Notes.”’ First Row: Anne Fini, Margaret Smith, Sally Harrison, Joan Kerrigan, Beverly Richards, Thomas Bagley, Theodore Rifkin. Although the name has been changed, the traditions of the organization have remained unaltered, and the Interclass Play Contest and Recital Night are still presented annually. Innovations, other than the name, include the drafting of a constitution and an additional dramatic show to be presented regularly every spring. The Dramatic Club aims to give its members ample knowledge of directing, producing, and acting in theatrical productions. Stage-setting and make-up application are two of the behind-the-footlights activities studied by the group. Also, one meeting every month is set aside for the reading of plays, in order that the members may learn to appreciate artistic writings and to discern between good and bad stage fare. SKI TEAM All the ski-tracks led to the Leominster Ski-Tow, popularly known as Cliff's Cliff, during the cold winter months. And even during the warmer spring months, a few die-hards could be seen attempting to schuss an over-size snow drift. L. H. S. was well represented in the city’s Leominster Ski-Club. With Sally Harrison as Senior Representative, the high school members organized a ski team, led by Dick Tucker, and competed in meets against Gardner, Fitchburg, and Worcester. The ski-fever ran high this year among the sport's enthusiasts. Ski Heil! THE FLYING CLUB The latest addition to the L. H. S. club list is the FLYING CLUB. The club was formed early in the year under the capable direction of our principal, Dwight S. Davis, and through the cooperation of the Wachusett Aviation Company Arthur Wheeler was elected as presiding officer until the permanent officers could be elected. The primary purpose in forming the club was to allow the air-minded students of L. H. S. to obtain flight instruction and solo flying at the special reduced rates offered to flying clubs. During the course of the year, the members enjoyed a series of films on the principles of flight and on related subjects. Two of the members, Valeri Richard and Arthur Wheeler, have obtained their student pilots’ licenses. Several other members are nearly ready to solo and will probably have their licenses by the time this appears. This club is another step in the L. H. S. march with progressive education. Through this organization, Mrs. Miriam Bucknell, the club's faculty advisor, aims to familiarize the members with French songs and games, and to give them a strong back- ground knowledge of France’s many cultured contributions to our civilized world. Above all, however, is the dominant principle of the club—to foster and promote brotherhood between the United States and France. Two of the club’s philanthropic gestures in the past have been the sending of food and clothing to the needy children of war-torn France, and the presenting of prizes in French at graduation. Leaders this year are: President, Robert Ouimet; Vice-President, Sally Harrison; Sec- retary, Joan Kerrigan; Treasurer, Margaret Smith; Executive Board, Nancy Jackson, Patricia Becrelis, and Jeannette Rheault. 30 = doan Kerrigan. a Secretary Margaret Smith reasurer Orphans from France 31 Robert Ouimet Dresident 1 lis a ere Sally Harrison Vice - Resident 4 Caruana band These Wor 4 oy W -.04@ daqge Volley ball Goons... : SPORTS The American youth who engages in high school sports becomes imbued with many of the qualities of a good citizen. He develops a sense of teamwork or cooperation which enables him. to live, play, or work with his fellow men, not as a single, self supporting, defiant person, but as a part of a unit. He becomes aware of and incorporates within himself a standard of sportsmanship and a high degree of courage. He realizes the importance of authority and obedience, and they become elements of his. character. Thus, the important function of high school sports is that it develops its players into better citizens for the future. 35 : | : | , COACHING STAFF All boys’ athletics at L. H. S. are under the supervision of Head Instructor Charles B. Broderick, and assistants Theodore Kucharski and Carmen Picucci. The football coaching of Broderick and Kucharski is well-known throughout New England for its excellence. The health situation of the boys is taken care of by Dr. Charles C. Wheeler. Altogether these four men are responsible for the many L. H. S. victories. Carmen Picucci, Dr. Charles A. Wheeler, Charles Broderick, Theodore Kucharski. FOOTBALL The main interest around L. H. S. is the Blue and White football squad. Ably coached in the backfield by Coach Charles Broderick and instructed in the line work by Coach Kucharski and Carmen Picucci, the boys rounded into a formidable team that gave the other school ‘'Fight- ing 11's a tough battle. The squad had a successful season in 1946. Out of ten games played, they were defeated only twice. The peak of the season came when L. H. S. defeated the team of the veterans of Thayer Academy by a score of 20-0. The click upset of the season came when Fitchburg won the Thanksgiving game in a 7-6 duel. All in all, however, the past year has been very successful. BASKETBALL With but two veterans returning from last year’s squad, Coach Broderick and Coach Picucci have their work cut out for them. The team has a very difficult schedule. They have games with Gardner, Fitchburg, Clinton, Nashua, and St. Bernard’s on a home and visitors basis. The rest of the schedule is filled with single games with Athol and the Alumni. Indeed, this schedule calls for some hard work from both the boys and the coaches. The newly appointed physical instructor at the Leominster High School is Mr. Carmen Picucci. Having drawn up an extensive course for the pupils, he planned regulations for football, basketball, and baseball. He divided each gym class into four groups, and each day during the fall the football teams competed to determine which would represent their class in the playoff. A record of each team was posted on the bulletin board. In baseball and basketball, the same procedure was followed. The winner in each class played the winners of the other classes to decide the best team. Mr. Piccucci must be commended for the fine job he has done. Boys’ Athletica... William Allen—Skiing 2-3-4. Excepting this old-time locker room difficulty, the girls’ gym classes ran pretty smoothly this year, for this was the year that marked the beginning of full time physical education instruc- tion for the fairer sex on the Hill. With four periods of Gym in the week's curriculum, the girls were able to learn and perfect the finer points of the various sports, and to study, in the classroom, the other aspects of physical education. For the more athletic-minded girl, there was always some sport activity in the afternoon, in the gymnasium or out on the field. The competitive spirit was sure to run high when the gals were vying for a position on the Varsity Team. Credit for this renewal of interest in Girls’ Sports should rightly go to Miss Gladys Lavin, the attractive, well-liked instructress, whose efforts have been appreciated by the whole school. November 29, 1945. Dear Diary, Have been waiting all day for the “Enterprise” to see who took away first prize for the best play presented. Nearly did “hand springs’’ when I read, ‘Junior Class Wins First Place in Annual Inter-Class Play Contest for the Second Consecutive Time.” Did somebody say something about talent? (Ahem) November 30, 1945. Dear Diary, “Ends, tackles, center, guards’’—'‘Hold that line’’ were familiar cheers heard at today’s Thanksgiving Game. A really hard, “rip-snorting’’ battke was played and the fans cheered even harder when the final score of 6-6 was announced. Our varsity “boys’’ are “‘Skip’’ Salvatore, Dick Tucker, and Pat Sendrowski. 49 February 20, 1946. Dear Diary, Just came in from seeing a grand play, produced and presented by 20 students from L. H. June 22, 1946. Dear Diary, Thought I'd take time out to wind things up with a few words about “TAC.’’ Golly, it's going over big this year, under the able leadership of Pat Becrelis, ‘‘Spud’’ Spadaro, and ‘‘Charkey’’ Bonner, all Junior Officers. The membership totals an odd 1,000. Al- though some aren't odd! (There, aren't we being a bit too corny ?) SENIOR YEAR September 4, 1946. Dear Diary, The L. H. S. “Fighting 11” certainly played a tough battle with the veterans at Thayer Academy this afternoon, and our squad sure polished ‘em off with an amazing score of 26-0! November 12, 1946. Dear Diary, Won't take time out to write about the first and second prize in the Inter-Class Play Contest, ‘cause they didn’t mean a whole lot to the Seniors. (Ridiculous!) But the Seniors received honorable mention for their grand performance in the play entitled ‘Everything Nice,” starring Maxine Hertel, Anita Underwood, Anne Cohen, and Malcolm Healy. November 30, 1946. Dear Diary, Um-Ummm—Can smell that inviting aroma of turkey with all the trimmings! Incidentally, today’s Fitchburg - Leominster game was the most formidable battle ever played. The clash came when the ‘Red and Gray’’ were the victors, with a close shave score of 7-6. 11:45 P. M. P. S. Just had to add a few lines about tonite’s ‘‘Hep’’ evening. ‘They,’ all the fellows, were on deck, all sheiked up, ready to kill! The occasion was the Thanksgiving Dance, sponsored by the Senior Class. (To quote our great philosopher, Dick Tucker, Flattery will get you nowhere!”’) SO Dear Diary, December 1, 1946. Dear Diary, Goin’ to the Senior Hop? Who yah on the “hustle” for this time? Golly, it’s early this year, only 5 days away. December 6, 1946. June 20, 1947. Dear Diary, The day we've waited for so long, but hate to see come, has arrived. Today we are on our own. For most of us, there will be little chance for college; but to the teachers who have taught us the knowledge which we will carry with us for the rest of our lives, let us raise a sincere bit of appreciation. As we start our new jobs or continue with our old ones, whatever they may be, let us keep that same old spirit which we found in L. H. S.— for with that spirit—we cannot fail. SPECIAL FEATURES Not all the learning, acquired during our stay at L. H. S., comes from books. The social life of our municipality plays an important part in the education of the students. The best actress award was won by Anita Underwood; the best actor medal was awarded to Jack Baker; Jack Seeley received honorable mention. Sy) ‘Hamlet 47... SENIOR PLAY There were Viennese waltzes and jive tunes at the Castle in Elsinore; there was a baker's dozen of pretty co-eds from Witten- berg whom Shakespeare had never thought of; Laertes bade a fond farewell to his sister Ophelia in the busy Elsinore Airport; Hamlet, in swimming trunks, delivered the immortal soliloquy ‘To be or not to be,’’ poised on the edge of the diving board in the Castle swim- ming pool; the sanitarium at Elsinore became the setting for Ophelia’s poignant madness; and the fatal duel which causes Hamlet's ultimate undoing occurred in the Castle gymnasium. But the essential spirit of this greatest of all plays which has swayed the minds and hearts of playgoers down through the ages was retained in its entirety in this production of ‘‘Hamlet”’ by the Class of 1947 on the nights of April 23, 24, and 25 in the Junior High School Auditorium. Far from violating its traditional integrity, this modern-dress production served to under- score the eternal values of the play and proved once again that it is for all times and ages. Emphasis in this 44th Senior Production 56 was placed not on the “'star’’ values of the central characterizations, but rather on the rediscovery of the swiftly-moving, absorbing story-structure of the play. Its sixteen action- packed scenes were, in effect, a living motion- picture. -A simple functional setting and an ingenious lighting arrangement afforded the student actors full scope for telling the melodramatic story in the most effective theatrical terms. The allied arts of acting, music, dance, and design, and the pro- motional and business skills incident to the successful production involved the services of every member of the graduating class. Enthusiastic community audiences and many notable, visiting educators filled the auditorium to capacity for the three per- formances and acclaimed the project as one of the most unusual an d interesting ever undertaken by a high school group. ‘““Hamlet 47’ was the eleventh in the series of Senior Plays directed by Mr. John F. Joyce and the fourth Shakespearean pro- duction since 1939, ‘‘Macbeth,” ‘Romeo and Juliet,“ and ‘The Taming of the Shrew” having been staged by other senior classes. FAC Jopics... el AG It's Saturday nite in the ole home town, and it’s anyone’s guess where you'll find the better half of the teen-age crowd. A carry-over from ‘‘war- years,’ the Teen-Age Canteen (better still, “°TAC’’) is in full swing, more so than ever before. Actually run by officers selected from among the patrons, the canteen always has the individual support of all. Whether it’s just another nite with the ole juke box supplying the ‘‘mco- sek’’ or a hep band giving the ‘‘down beat, ’ there's sure to be fun for all. And why not? Of course we wouldn't want to have every dance, would we! S when you see us sitting and chatting, playing ping pong, or sipping a ‘‘coke,”’ you'll know it’s just that we’d rather not have all the dances but give some other girls a chance, too! (Big hearted, you know... . ) Every so often, the pocket book permitting, we hire a real “‘live’’ band— and does that draw a crowd. They tell me they even come down from Springfield —so you see our fame has spread—Ah, me, it’s dark here under the balcony ...... And I think—Quiet, Sadie—Try to look nonchalant—That cute football hero is headed my way! 58 60 THE SOPHOMORE CLASS The Sophomores have been doing a great deal to establish their position at Leominster Senior High School. At the introduction of the school year, officers to represent their class were elected by the students. Already underway, is a project in which no other class has been able to succeed, that being, to obtain class rings in the Sophomore year. A large portion of the Sophomore Class are members of the numerous school clubs; such as, Choral, Glee, and Dramatic Clubs. Students belonging to the Dramatic Club showed school spirit and class enthusiasm by receiving second prize in the Inter-Class Play Contest. One student from each Sophomore homeroom represents their class at meet- ings of the school cabinet. In all these functions, the Sophomores are doing well in up-holding traditions at the high school. The Sophomore Class has had the unique privilege of electing class officers this year. They are: President—Robert Brown Vice-President—Sylvia Lolli Secretary—Mary Rasmussen Treasurer—Joan Sculley JUNIOR CLASS The class of ‘48 is a class of which to be proud. They have two of the most outstanding high school football players in New England. Never before had two boys had honorable mention on a football honor roll in their sophomore as well as junior year. These boys, as you know, are Guy Barrassi, the president of the class, and Marco Landon. Not only did the class win honors in the footgall field, but their social events were successful, too. They won first place in the Inter-Class Play Contest. A very brilliant and colorful affair, the Junior Prom, was one of the main events of the year. This success is due largely to the splendid co-operation given by the class officers. Guy Barrassi, class president, has done a magnificent job in making the Junior Class outstanding. The class has a very able vice- president in Joan Paquette. She has con- tributed much to the success of the class. The substantial amount of money in the Junior treasury is partly due to the splendid work of treasurer Joan Wheeler. First on the honor roll and one of the best secretaries L. H. S. has had is Lola De Amicis. We hope next year their success will be continued. 61 Listan MA dsan child nent , Bouncing “Burnsie 62 | | THE SENIORS The Seniors are the leaders of our school community. The class of ‘47 will soon leave L. H. S., but it will have made its place in the history of the school. After only three short years on “the hill,’’ these girls and boys will go forth, some to enter business and trades, others to pursue higher learning. Whatever their interest, they are sure to be successful, for these men and women of tomorrow will be the future leaders of our country. 65 WILLIAM CHARLES ALLEN College Course Bill . . . S., who have returned to further their education for colleges and other institutions of learning. Many of them were in the various campaigns in Europe and in the Pacific, where they experienced some of the most deadly combat ever known. Now they have returned from this havoc of service life to their homes, in Leominster, and their school. They are no longer the typical high school students they used to be, but rather they are grown men with a steadfast determination to educate themselves to the highest extent. We, the faculty and students of the Leominster Senior High School, heartily welcome back every veteran. We are proud of the great work that they have done to preserve our great country. We wish them the best of luck and success for their future careers. 129 Sentor Ueterans VINCENT ANTONUCCI “Chalk. ANavye ee aseabecsin.”. M M3 c ... Okinawa 45-46 . . . Likes sports . . . H. S. remain. We leave our miniature community, having acquired, besides a vast quantity of useful knowledge, many interesting and profitable experiences that go to make a rich, full life. Here, we have learned the fundamentals of self government and leadership. This training has helped us become better citizens of our community. On the other hand, our class has certainly contributed its bit to the school and to the future classes of L. H. S. With regret we of the Senior Class leave our school community; with anticipation and happiness we take our places in the world community. 135 “Toe bs, cu not toe- da cf Somathing Jor the Boys 136 MR.
