During the year they participated in the games, dances, and special activities. March 12 was chosen as Government Day. Six cars took the Seniors to Pierre where they toured the Capitol, the Soldiers and Sailors War Memorial, and the Oahe Dam. They also visited sessions of the House and the Senate. Seniors Express Their Opinions The year 1979 had a special significance to everyone at LHS. Some of the seniors expressed their opinions about their last year. It's a time that will always be cherished and remembered. I loved it. I'd like to live all those good times over again. It was fun, but I'm glad it's over. Other classes offered were modern problems, physics, shops, advanced math, Algebra II, and office practice. Business law was offered the first semester, and personal finance was offered the second semester. The office practice girls worked up town in a business office during seventh hour for the last six weeks of school. During the last nine weeks of government, the seniors were on their own. They took oral tests and covered the remaining chapters at their own speeds. Six chapters were necessary to pass the course. The annual term paper ended the seniors' last year of English. LOWER RIGHT: Photographer takes Scott Kolb by surprise in the library'. Honors Reflect Senior Efforts Eight students from the graduating class of 1979 were honored for their various efforts. Jackie Mack was chosen as Leola's Daughter of American Revolution candidate. She was also chosen as a Girls' State representative from Leola. The two Boys' State representatives from Leola were Mike Adam and Clark Neuharth. Long Lake Girls' Stater was Colette Hoffman, and Boys' Stater was Tim Rath. The five seniors graduating with honors were Jackie Mack, highest honor; Clark Neuharth, high honor; and Joallen Heyd, Georgiann Lapka, and Pam Weiszhaar, honor. Marsha And Tim Chosen Homecoming was celebrated in Leola on September 22. Coronation took place Friday morning in the gym. Queen Marsha Geffre and King Tim Rath were chosen by the student body. Classes, clubs, mixed chorus, and swing choir provided entertainment for the morning festivities. After lunch the parade began with the band marching to That Old Black Magic . The Pirates took on the Northwestern Wilcats at the annual Homecoming game. The Pirates came out victorious with a score of 30-0. A disco dance held at the gym ended the Homecoming festivities. Homecoming 17 Sweetheart Ball The Sweetheart Ball, originally scheduled for February 16, 1979, was postponed because the weather was disagreeable. It was rescheduled for the following week, but again finally cancelled. The sophomore class instead sponsored a KABR disco dance in April. Denise Hoffman and Kevin Heupel were belatedly crowned Sweetheart King and Queen, however, on May 9 at the Award's Day Program. Other members of the royal court were Shirley Kessler, Kathy Brandner, Jolene Zenker, Dana Leibel, Mike Waltman, and Jody Hoffman. Sweetheart Royalty were : Shirley Kessler, Kathy Brandner, Jolene Zenker, Queen Denise Hoffman, King Kevin Heupel, Mike Waltman, Jody Hoffman, and Dana Leibel. 18 Sweetheart Ball We've Got Tonight On April 28, 1979, the junior class of Leola High School presented to the senior class, We've Got Tonight. The gym was decorated in medium blue and silver. A bridge entrance and gazebo in the center of the floor accented this imaginative evening. The banquet started at 8:00 PM with a program and grand march following. The menu consisted of ham, swiss steak, baked potatoes, a salad bar, cake, milk, punch, and coffee. The delicious meal was catered by the Hi-Way cafe and served by Pam Albrecht, Peggy Weisser, Patti Schumacher, Sandy Zulk, Rhonda Waltman, Fred Geffre, Mark Ketterling, Alan Kulesa, Myron Schmidt, and Todd Lechner. A welcome was given by the junior class President Lynne Schemp, and the acceptance was by the senior class President Pearl Sperle. Entertainment followed with Lowell Morrison and John Guthmiller singing Somewhere in the Night . Following the song, Master of Ceremonies Miles Blumhardt introduced our speaker for the evening, Allan Guthmiller. Following the speech, there was more entertainment, and the senior class wills were read by Bill Taylor and the class prophecy, written by Miles Blumhardt, was read by Kristie Fischer. Following a poem by Leslee Meyer, Kevin Heupel sang the proms theme song. After the program, the couples were instructed where to go to line up for the grand march. Music was provided by Precious Cargo from Aberdeen, South Dakota. The theme song was played by the band during the entrance of the couples to the Grand March. Prom 21 May 11 Is Graduation Day Members of the senior class gathered at 8:00 p.m. on May 11th for their final evening together at LHS. Graduates wore yellow roses, their class flower. The stage was decorated in their class colors, yellow and blub. Rev; R.W. Schwarz, pastor of the Salem-Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Long Lake gave the invocation and benediction. Mr. Larry Gauer, a former teacher and coach in Leola who now lives in Bowdle, gave the commencement address. The swing choir sang three selections, I'll Always Remember, We Never Really Say Good- bye, and Friends, I Will Remember You. Joan Hoffman played the processional and recessional. She also played If as the Seniors were receiving their diplomas. Special music for baccalaureate was provided by Jackie Mack, who played a piano solo called The Homecoming, and Clark Neuharth who sang Into His Loving Arms. Graduation 23 Baccalaureate Services Held Baccalaureate services were held on Sunday, May 6, at 8:00 p.m. in the Leola High School gym. Rev. R.W. The girls put much work and effort into the supper to make it a great success. The annual spring style show took place in May. Many beautiful outfits were styled and modeled by members and nonmembers alike. Leola Future Homemakers of America officers were: Mrs. Daniel, Advisor, Marsha Geffre, Debbie Goebel, Jackie Mack, Jenny Rau, Kristi Fischer, Kay Albrecht, Candice Lechner, and Joyce Feickert ABOVE: The FHA and FBLA girls took turns at the running of the concession stand during the District Five Girls Basketball Tournament held in Leola. Future Homemakers of America members were: Debbie Bender, Denise Hoffman, Julie Cox, Colleen Layton, Lynne Schemp, Jolene Zenker, and Moira Evans. 26 FHA FBLA Fundraisers Jenny Rau was elected as the 1978-1979 state FBLA secretary and Jackie Mack as the state parliamentarian. The Leola chapter of the FBLA sponsored various money- raising activities this year to help send many of the members to the spring FBLA convention in Sioux Falls. The staff was supervised by Mr. Schemp and Mrs. George. Staff members Bev Morrison and Patty Geffre discuss new ideas for the paper. PIRATES Cheering Toward 1 During our victorious year, the cheerleaders held pep rallies to boost enthusiasm at school during the sports seasons. They put on skits and led cheers at the pep rally held uptown during Homecoming. The MBM team cheerleaders were able to help cheer with the A squad at the District and Regional Tournaments. RIGHT: Mr. Guffey gives Stacey Kappas lessons. 32 Band Band Performs At Districts The band, under the direction of Mr. Mick Guffey, performed at both the girls' and boys' district basketball tournament this year. Their pop repertory included such songs as The Theme from MASH, Lady of Spain, and The Beer Barrel Polka. The marching band led the Homecoming parade and also participated in the Gypsy Day parade in Aberdeen. BOTTOM ROW: Stacey Kappes, Georgiann Lapka, and Lynne Schemp. 34 Contests Stage Band Makes Tour For the first time in school history, the LHS stage band, under the direction of Mr. Mick Guffey, went on tour with the Leola Swing Choir. Earlier in the year the stage band participated in a co-concert with the Swing Choir, performing many familiar songs. These included: Including Me, Mercy, Mercy Mercy, All the Things You Are, and Overtime. Stage Band 35 Chorus Presents Three Concerts During the 1978-79 school year, the Leola High School Mixed Chorus, under the direction of Mr. Jim Ochsner, presented three concerts. Instead of the usual carols, the Christmas Concert was highlighted by a selection entitled Down From His Glory, which featured both songs and narration. Several selections from Camelot were sung during the Spring Concert, and the Pops Concert was highlighted by The Golden Age of Rock and Roll, The Best of Buddy Holly, and the hit tune You Needed Me. Swing Choir Performs The Leola Swing Choir, under the direction of Jim Ochsner performed many times through out the year. They gave concerts at various churches, a Production Credit Association convention, and school concerts. Rath Heads Student Council Tim Rath headed the student council for the 1978-1979 school. Vice- President Marsha Geffre and Secretary-Treasurer Pam Weiszhaar, along with the class representatives, aided him in his job. Assisting the student council was one of Mr. Marvin Maule's duties as high school principal. He was also a study hall teacher. The band performed at the girls' and boys' district basketball tournaments. Mr. Guffey gave weekly lessons to the instrumentalists. He also taught a music theory class and advised the sophomore class. Mr. Jim Ochsner headed the vocal music department. He served as athletic director and coached boys’ basketball and junior high athletics. He was also a senior class advisor. Mrs. Doris Hepperle taught shorthand, typing, and office procedure. The office procedure class, which consisted of fifteen senior girls, worked for local businessmen during the last nine weeks' period. She was also FBLA and freshman class advisor. The English classes studied grammar, literature, and did term papers and speeches. Mrs. George also advised the sophomore class, annual staff, and paper staff. Mrs. Galles also supervised student librarians and served as a junior class advisor. Mrs. Susan Ackerson, Title I Reading Instructor, helped to make the printed page more accessible to elementary students by teaching and reinforcing reading skills. Shop I, II, and III were instructed in building, welding, and graphing. Mr. Daly also advised the freshmen class and was assistant basketball and football coach. Mrs. Alverde Daniel was in charge of the Home Economics department, FHA, and was a senior class advisor. The home ec. classes learned the arts of cooking and sewing. He also taught driver's education to the freshmen and English to the eighth graders. He advised the sophomore class. This was Mr. Ron Struck's first year at LHS. He taught government and History. His classes participated in panel discussions, group studies, and mock trials. He was the football and boys' track coach. He was also an advisor to the junior class. Curriculum 47 Students Master The Sciences Mr. Loren Gill and Mr. Richard Jasmer taught the science courses at LHS. Mr. Gill taught physics, chemistry, micro-biology, and biology. He was also a freshman class advisor. Mr. Jasmer taught health and general science to the freshmen students. He was the girls' basketball and track coach this year. For personal reasons, he left at semester break time, and Mrs. Imogene Kaul finished the school year. Both were advisors to the junior class. The math classes included advanced math, Algebra I, II, and geometry. The teachers taught eighth grade math. Curriculum 49 They Make It Possible Helping us day to day were our friendly bus drivers, cooks, and janitors. In the Pirates' first encounter, two fourth quarter touchdowns turned back Ellendale N.D. 14-0. The powerful Pirates then routed Britton 32-6. The Blue'n white opened conference play at Eureka, where they drubbed the outmanned Trojans 35-6. Struck's incredible crew then whipped Northwestern 30-0 for an impressive homecoming victory. Ipswich visited the poised Pirates only to get whitewashed 33-0. Next, the invincible Pirates thrashed Northwestern 48-0. The gridiron bosse then clinched the conference by subsuing Ipswich 21-6. The Pirates wrapped up conference play by tripping Eureka 20-6 and for their ninth victory, they crushed the Aberdeen Juniors 37-6. Football 53 Pirate Leaders Nine senior gridders received recognition in the All-Conference team with five on the first team and four on the honorable mention squad. Tim Rath, Joe Leibel, Jerome Geffre, Vince Brandner and Todd Gohl earned first team honors, and Clark Neuharth, Don Breitag, Bill Taylor and Keith Kracke achieved honorable mention status. Defensive end Tim Rath’s exploits did not go unnoticed as the Pirate senior was selected first team All-State. Rath was a big thorn in the sides of opponents as he anchored the Pirate line. Pirates Climb To A Successful Season New assistant coach, Mrs. Lou Taylor guided the Pirates B squad to an outstanding 13-7 record over all. The young Pirates started the season off hot by winning their first five out of six games. After two consecutive losses the blue and white got back on the winning side again by defeating four out of five foes. The remainder of the season was marked by winning two and losing two. Pirates Place Third In Districts The girls' basketball program, now in its fourth year at Leola High, has progressed rapidly. Returning Coach Jasmer viewed great improvement and considered defense and rebounding to be the Pirates' strongest points. For the first year, the team was led by Tri-captains Pam Weiszhaar, Doreen Merkel, and Jenny Rau, and ended their season successfully by defeating Frederick for third place in the district tournament. Girls Basketball 57 Pirates Sail To Region II Coach Gary Hepperle's experienced cage squad sported a remarkable 19-2 campign but failed in their efforts for a state bid when the powerful McLaughlin Midgets edged the Pirates 66-65 in the finals of Region II. The talented Pirates opened the season by shelling Northwestern and Roscoe before tripping to the tough Eureka Trojans by three. The mighty Pirates then kicked off a sixteen game win streak which didn't end until the finals of Region II. In District V, the Pirates bombed Frederick, trimmed Ipswich and turned back Eureka to capture the coveted crown. The Region II tourney followed, and the Piates sailed to the finals by subduing Pollock by seven before losing a disappointing one point verdict to McLaughlin. During the Eureka B Team tourney, the Piates lost a disappointing opener to Herried before rebounding to take back- to-back victories over Ipswich and Hosmer to earn the consolation trophy. Z' 62 Girls’ Track Thinclads Cruise Coach Ron Struck's 13 thinclads had a successful year as the blue n' white finished high in the team standings at all their meets. The Pirates captured the team crown at the Hoven Early Bird and placed four relays at the annual Redfield Relays. Two big meets at Groton and Aberdeen followed and again the speedy Pirates were represented well. This was proceded by Eureka Legion, Britton and the conference at Eureka. Dennis Zelmer won the 100, 200, and 400 meter dashes and anchored the winning 880 yard relay team at Region 1A in Aberdeen. V carl 5pede. Juniors Order Rings A highlight for many of the Juniors was the ordering of their class rings. No one style was dominant among the Juniors. The rings were ordered from Jostens. The Juniors decided to have their senior pictures taken by Hardin's again this year. This year the Junior officers were all held by girls, with Lynne Schemp as president, Kristi Fischer as vice- president and Jolene Zenker as secretary- treasurer. Fund-raising activities included holding raffles during basketball games and running the concession stands throughout the football and basketball seasons. For their last money-making project, they held a bake sale on April 14 in the Municipal Building. The sophomore-freshman float won first place in the homecoming float competition. During the course of the year, the class sponsored many fund-raising activities such as a sock hop and the raffling off of two turkeys and a $25 gift certificate. Sophomores work during shop class. Sophomores 71 Many Classes Offered The freshman class this year enjoyed many new and exciting experiences. Some of the classes that were required were English I, Typing I, General Science, and General Math or Algebra I. In English I, taught by Mrs. Jean Guffey, the class read West Side Story. They also read many other literature selections and studied grammar. In Typing I, taught by Mrs. Doris Hepperle, the freshmen learned how to type such things as letters, memoranda, and invoices. Many freshmen took General Math, while others took Algebra I, which were both taught by Mrs. James Goehring and Mrs. Imogene Kaul. Some of the students also took Health and Drivers' Education. The boys were able to participate in football, basketball, and track. The girls were active in track, basketball, and cheerleading. The jr. high also had chorus twice a week. They performed at the Award's Day Program and gave a musical operetta at Christmas. Jr. High 77 Eighth Graders Learn And Grow Mrs. Hemen taught all the basic subjects except math, which was taught by Mr. Goehring and Mrs. Kaul. Many of the class members participated in physical education, football, and track. Band and junior high chorus helped the eighth graders round out their educational year. Seventh Graders Present Plays CC16PThe seventh graders used new social studies books this year. They really enjoyed studying about South America and Canada. Mr. Daniel tuaght the literature class. Sixth Graders Use Calculators The sixth grade, under Mrs. Turnwall, pitted brains against machines in a math lesson involving the use of calculators. The class worked hard this year, studying such things as the religions and cultures of foreign countries in Social Studies, the functions and environments of living things in Science, and parts of speech and fundamentals of usage in English. OPPOSITE: Joey Erdmann and Robert Waltmann dress for recess. 80 Sixth Grade Fifth Graders Share Teachers The fifth grade class was led by Mr. Hoffman and Mrs. Ecker. Mr. Hoffman taught science, reading, spelling, and penmanship in the mornings, while Mrs. Ecker taught math, language, history, and geography each afternoon. The fifth graders held class meeting each Thursday and elected new class officers at the beginning of every month. OPPOSITE: Luana Fauth and Joni Duvall point out South Dakota on the map. Fifth Graders Begin Band For several members of the fifth grade class, beginning band was an important step. Each student playing a musical instrument was a member of the C band. Mrs. Pade used the controlled reader to increase the class' reading speeds. Graphs were used to show their improvement in listening and comprehension skills. OPPOSITE: Fifth graders use the bullitin board to practice their math skills. 82 Fifth Grade Fourth Graders Visit Museum The fourth graders interviewed senior citizens of the community to learn about South Dakota heritage. Jackie Anderson, a student teacher for the last nine weeks of the second semester, helped with the project. The class also visited the Dakota Prairie Museum to learn about early pioneer life. Fourth Grade 83 Third Graders Study Hawaii The study of Hawaii had a special significance to the third grade class when Jack Heyd's uncle sent an orchid lei from the islands far the class to share. Fresh pineapple was another Hawaiian treat which the class enjoyed. OPPOSITE: Third graders enjoy their play table. Second Graders Enjoy Reading During the year, the second grade class enjoyed reading from their reading books. Among the activities which accompanied the stories was the construction of a TV on which they presented their favorite story. They also made a train to go with their circus unit. First Graders Learn To Read A poll taken in Mrs. Young's first grade class indicated that the children's favorite subject was reading. The class aided them in language development, sentence structure, and the correct formation of sound. Gym, music, and library classes were other activities the class enjoyed. OPPOSITE: First graders create country scenes in their sandbox. 86 First Grade Kindergarten Begins School The kindergarten class began its first day of school on January 15, 1979. The first few weeks were spent getting to know one another and becoming adjusted to a new schedule and a new environment. Learning the letters of the alphabet and the numbers from one to ten, as well as music, art, and play- time activities, rounded out the typical kindergarten school day.
