This ceremony was under the super- vision of vindictive sophomores. Following initiation, the faculty, as judges, chose the Pirate King and Queen: Martin Kulm and Alma Eichelberg, and their attendants, Harry Linder and Marcella Balliet. .. P m saw Melvln Tuscher, Pirate Day Marshal, guide the 13 floats, each depicting a song, through the streets of Leola. Prizes for the most original and beautiful floats were awarded. Although a football game had been scheduled with Hecla for the afternoon entertainment, it was necessary to post- pone it because of rain. Festivities were brought to a climax with the homecomine- n Mn eatUring B1i K11 z,S Band’ at the Masonic Tempi!. Dancing, games, and lunch made this one of the most memorable homecomings of Leola High School. The Leola Pirates six man squad were runners up in the North Central Conference football season to the Claremont Honkers. Claremont took the measure of Leola in their first encounter with the Pirates by a close score of 31 to 22. In the second game at Claremont the Honkers trounced the Pirates 31 to 7. Entertainment included a variety of stands, grade and high school skits, a lunch room, and a taxi- dance. The impressive coronation of the freshmen candidates, Fred Hilgemann and Jeanette Walth, as the royal king and queen, climaxed the evening. Royal attendants were Lee Conahan and Evelyn Geffre, senior candidates; Monte Goodrich and Audrey Crouch, junior candidates; Gordon Schanzenbach and Viva Turner, sophomore candidates. Since the carnival was a financial venture, the class rais- ing the most money received top honors—the coronation, of their candidates as carnival king and queen. Class events held for this purpose were: freshman—trap shoot; senior--card party; junior--box social; and sophomore--bake sale. SCENE I STUDENT COUNCIL Seated: Lee Conahan. The members are elected for a term of one school year; the officers being elected in the spring by the student body and the representatives elected by their respective classes. They copped the North Central Conference Championship with eleven wins against one defeat. The Pirates also won the Conference Tournament and the District 5 Championship. They lost the first game of the Regional Tournament to a strong McLaughlin team 46 to 44 after holding a halftime lead of 28 to 18. The Pirates also dropped a 48 to 41 decision to a red hot Dupree team in the consolation finals to wind up the season for the Pirates. SCENE IV MUSIC Vocal music, under the direction of Mr. Wendell Garwood, enjoyed a successful year at Leola High School. Competing in the State Regional Contest, Leola High musicians were awarded one first, four second, and two third places. Joyce Brosz received a superior in the piano. Eelila Jundt, and Virg- inia Koerner, contralto; Shirley Swanson, soprano; Allen Kulm, tenor; and the Sextette, composed of Joyce, Shirley, Eelila, Marcella Balliet, Marianne Young, and Virginia Koerner all re- ceived an excellent rating. Martin Kulm, baritone, and Alma Eichelberg, mezzo-soprano, were given a good rating. The outstanding event for the music groups was the Christmas program in which the mixed chorus, the girls1 glee club, and various soloists and small groups participated in singing yuletide selections. Superintendent A, L. Hagen of the Dickinson Public Schools gave the commencement address, Joyce Brosz the valedictory, and Orley Rath the salutatory.
