In both 1937 and 1938 Warren Giedt has represented Leola High School as piano and clarinet soloist During his sopho- more year, while attending Washington High School, Sioux Falls, he rated Excellent on clarinet in the State Contest, and was a member of a woodwind sextet which rated Superior in the State and later participated in the National Contest at Cleveland In addition to his solo work Warren has, since coming to LHS taken an active part in the various ensembles, and has been a valued member of many groups. The Mixed Trio was the result of a desire for a small instru- mental group to supplement the work of the Orchestra, and it began its existence as a Quartet. Illness of one of its members made necessary the smaller organization, and in such form it apeared at the District Music Contest in 1938. The Trio is known for its fine tone, perfect intonation, and genuinely emo- tional interpretations. Its members are Wallace Giedt, violin- ist, Warren Giedt, clarinetist; and Lois Schmalz, pianist. Wallace Giedt has appeared as violin and cornet soloist for Leola Hiqh School, winning in 1937 on violin an Excellent rating in the District Contest, and a Superior in both Dis- trict and State on Cornet. While a sophomore he played cor- net in the Washington High School Band and was also a member of the brass sextet. For the post two years he has been con- certmaster of the Leolo High School Orchestra, and violinist in the Mixed Trio

The Mixed Vocal Ensemble sang first at the Christmas Recital in December, 1937, and appeared in programs later in the year. For the District Contest it was necessary to re- duce the group to six in order to meet re- quirements, but for all home appearances the double quartet has been used. Its members are: Lorraine Steiger and Vera Valentine, sopranos; Ella Balliet and Mildred Opp, altos; John Giedt and Bernard Kallas, tenors; and Gerald Lapka and Warren Sigler, basses. Mrs. G. H Towle has been the pianist. The Girls' Sextet was organized in the fall of 1936 from members of the seventh and eighth grades Since then it has made many public appearanees and as- sisted with the radio appearances of larger groups. Because of part grade membership it was unable to participate in the Contest Its members are: Lylice Kamm, Eva Valentine, Ardeth Dexter, Florence Fortin, Aileen Con Ion, and Dolores LaFontaine. Their occompanist has been Mrs. Towle. During the Christmas Season the music organizations of the school presented a program. It featured a combined chorus of high school and grade vocal groups The window background was designed by Mr. Jones.
