Text from Pages 1 - 38 of the 1938 volume:

rm A school annual should portray a cross section of school life as inter- preted by and through student initiative, interest, experience, and atti- tudes. As such it represents the culmination of purposeful activities permeated with desirable educational values worthy of the best efforts of any group of students. In publishing the BUCCANEER of 1938, Leola's first, the Senior Class has met these requirements and objectives. Aside from the assist- ance rendered by Miss Mary and Mr. Dan K Jones on the artistic em- bellishments the entire project is the product of student activity. The class initiated the idea and selected the staff members who, acting in their respective capacities, arranged effective financial management, organized sequence and scope of content, did much of the photography, composed all the reading matter, and handled all details of production with minimal faculty supervision. The Staffs success in depicting stu- dent life in Leola school classes, organizations, and activities will be measured by the treasured memories the scenes displayed may conjure in the minds of the students in the years that follow. The standard achieved and the benefits derived from the production cf this annual are a memorial to the Annual Staff, especially its Coordinator, Warren Giedt,--wholly an estimable antecedent for future BUCCANEERS Faculty Counselor ecfjcatum BECAUSE OF his earnest desire for the improvement of our school system and the progress effected by his policies, his genuine interest in the welfare of the students coming under his direction, his able leadership and executive obility, and his unusually wise judgment and sterling character, we, in a spirit of tribute, dedicate this, the first BUCCANEER to SUPERINTENDENT A L. It emerged from another undefeated season with a record that over- shadows even that of the 1936 team Such an achievement deserves commendation, and rightly meriting it are: Allen Hilgemann, for his out- standing performance as captain; R. L. Byler, for his most efficient coaching, and the whole team, for its wonderful display of team spirit. The standard set by this team is indeed a worthy goal for the future teams of LHS. M s$. The Girls' Athletic Associa- tion has for its purpose the cre- ation of a friendly relationship among the girls and the spon- soring of the girls' athletic pro- gram in the school. They hold regular monthly meetings which they devote partly to business and partly to social functions. The physical education pro- gram of the G A A., in which many participate, is under the direction of Miss Stickel. Here the girls have an opportunity to take part in various games such as basketball, volleyball and kittenball. As no inter-school contests are held, the girls' riv- alry is largely intra-mural DANK JONES, Director FIRST VIOLIN: Wallace Giedt Virginia Maier Gertrude Kallas Dolores Switzenberg SECOND VIOLIN: Adeline Becker Lois Schmalz Wilma Balliet Dalorsey Buechler Betty Becker Ardeth Dexter Celestine Kessler CELLO: Aileen Conlon Ida Kallenberger CLARINET: Warren Giedt Loren Gill Eva Valentine Dolores LaFontaine Martin Marquardt CORNET: Marvin Martz Jack Merkle Bernard Kallas HORN: Luella Steiger Ruth Martz TROMBONE: John Giedt Leona Sigler BARITONE: Eugene Kulm TUBA: Warren Sigler DRUMS: Beverly Switzenberg Florence Fortin BRASS QUARTET This group was organized to participate in the district music contest It is composed of Wal- lace Giedt, first cornet; Bern- ard Kallas, second cornet; John Gedt, trombone; and Eugene Kulm, baritone In both 1937 and 1938 Warren Giedt has represented Leola High School as piano and clarinet soloist During his sopho- more year, while attending Washington High School, Sioux Falls, he rated Excellent on clarinet in the State Contest, and was a member of a woodwind sextet which rated Superior in the State and later participated in the National Contest at Cleveland In addition to his solo work Warren has, since coming to LHS taken an active part in the various ensembles, and has been a valued member of many groups. The Mixed Trio was the result of a desire for a small instru- mental group to supplement the work of the Orchestra, and it began its existence as a Quartet. Illness of one of its members made necessary the smaller organization, and in such form it apeared at the District Music Contest in 1938. The Trio is known for its fine tone, perfect intonation, and genuinely emo- tional interpretations. Its members are Wallace Giedt, violin- ist, Warren Giedt, clarinetist; and Lois Schmalz, pianist. Wallace Giedt has appeared as violin and cornet soloist for Leola Hiqh School, winning in 1937 on violin an Excellent rating in the District Contest, and a Superior in both Dis- trict and State on Cornet. While a sophomore he played cor- net in the Washington High School Band and was also a member of the brass sextet. The Mixed Vocal Ensemble sang first at the Christmas Recital in December, 1937, and appeared in programs later in the year. For the District Contest it was necessary to re- duce the group to six in order to meet re- quirements, but for all home appearances the double quartet has been used. Its members are: Lorraine Steiger and Vera Valentine, sopranos; Ella Balliet and Mildred Opp, altos; John Giedt and Bernard Kallas, tenors; and Gerald Lapka and Warren Sigler, basses. Mrs. G. H Towle has been the pianist. The Girls' Sextet was organized in the fall of 1936 from members of the seventh and eighth grades Since then it has made many public appearanees and as- sisted with the radio appearances of larger groups. Because of part grade membership it was unable to participate in the Contest Its members are: Lylice Kamm, Eva Valentine, Ardeth Dexter, Florence Fortin, Aileen Con Ion, and Dolores LaFontaine. Their occompanist has been Mrs. Towle. During the Christmas Season the music organizations of the school presented a program. It featured a combined chorus of high school and grade vocal groups The window background was designed by Mr. Jones.
