Action! Camera! Lights! Action! Camera starts rolling as tiie title appears, Scenes of 77 . It ' s a unique movie, made up of its own time and settings . Each act is special, meaningful for everyone involved. It ' s about us and the way we were. So, just sit back and enjoy as the memories roll past you, for these are the Scenes of 77 . Act 1: The curtains open to the East Lobby and the projector begins, as a quiet voice narrates: It ' s the opening day of school and the students are returning. We run around excitedly to find what ' s changed and what ' s the same, to talk once again with old friends and teachers. There ' s relief to many that afternoon TA room has been dropped, but surprise to find that subject area fees will be charged this year. Mr. Jones announces the beginning of detention, everyone had something to say about that . After a while the excitement subsides and we settle into the routine of school . The scene changes to Mr. Gabet ' s TA room and we hear him describing Zack ' s attempts at potty training when Gong, Ding, Ding- Ding-a-Ding, Thud. The morning announcements come over the air - delivered by those ace comedians Tony Hudson and Tony Wittwer . Theirs is a low budget news program and they write their own copy. ' . ' Cheryl Ridderheim and Barry Delagrange, your books are not in the office. Mr. Shaw ' s fourth period class will meet today in Mr . Shaw ' s room, as scheduled. At least, no one ignores morning announcements anymore. The bell rings , fade out , as the students pass out of the room to their next class. Act 11 opens with a series of vignettes of first period classes: a senior boy in the library, catching a few winks before beginning his day; Miss B timing laps in the gym No cutting corners, you girls! Then maybe a friendly little game of Speedaway or Warball; T Kids Everywhere study center, with 100 students doing 200 different things , (nobody studies , it ' s not finals day) and Mrs . Osborn who has her detention notes handy, of course; and then a bunch of just regular classes like history, English or math. Oh well, Project Period ' s only 2 hours away. Act 111 is several hours later in the cafeteria. The noise is deafening. Kids are everywhere, talking. Many line up at the counter to buy their goodies for milk break or just to see what ' s on the menu for lunch. German club has their little donut stand up with swarms of donut fans milling around . Then, another bell and slowly the halls empty. Students go on to their next classes, one or two hours away from lunch. (Boy, can ' t wait til I ' m a Senior, they never have to stand in long lines for their lunch -senior privilege and all that) . After lunch just a couple more classes or nap time and then it ' s over for another day . Final announcements, bell, mass exodus . Buses lining the sidewalk fill rapidly as the students scramble aboard to get the seats they want. Juniors and seniors hurry to their cars to clear the parking lot before the buses begin to roll out . Some stay often for practice , or make up work, then home to study or to work, or to a friend ' s house to watch the new Mickey Mouse Club. Lights dim, a hush descends, day is done. Cut. Opening s mis mwmr ' vr- Sense Of Community Act IV opens on a crisp early fall evening, lots of people, a bonfire. It ' s Homecoming -and everyone comes back for an evening of football and reunions , a sense of community. The football scene was repeated many times that fall, climaxing with a victory over arch- rival Woodlan. It was a dream come true for L . H . S . fans . Next scene, it ' s snowing outside. Inside there are changes: set curfew times , and new dress styles like gauchos and boots . Action was provided by the incense bomber who hit time and again, setting firecrackers off in lockers and restrooms . He very narrowly missed causing serious injury and damage. No warning except the odor of incense when he was ready to strike again. And outside it was still snowing. The community had its share of disasters , too. Souder ' s Warehouse and Grabill Hardware burned down in a spectacular pre-dawn fire. Then, less than a month later, two other businesses on the same block, Napa and Grabill Radiator also 6 Opening mmi ■4i£i,t wm:f « 1 1 1 1 ■ ■ burned . All the while the snows came down. It snowed and snowed, and the temperatures were record breaking, bitterly cold, con ' t p. 164 ii Opening 7 ? 5SrJi;i--s « ' s i A ' mmM.4immm m ,fA ' ti It was one of those years! Filled with excitement, enthusiasm, and a will to stand out and be strong. Glance through these pages, will you remember all those times? Homecoming, the hard work and group participation of decorating the floats , the crowning of the queen . The fall and spring play that so many people worked so hard to put on for our entertainment. The class tourney that brings so many of us together for the competition, the excitement of just having fun. The Prom , with the thoughts of soft music, and just a chance to get out and have a little fun on a special evening. Last of all Graduation, which brings sad and happy feelings . And so you yourself can step up one more step to reach the top of success. 8 Prelude (.- fSiiSSSiSSeSSSiSi Si iiS SA -i%-U d H B__HL_M_ Ml %i li Prelude 9 Starting Again, A Sense Of Coming Home! September 2, 1976 7:45-11:20 As I walked into the school I noticed many things, old and new. It was as if all my senses were alerted -- nothing escaped my attention and I wanted to take everything in, find- ing what had improved or worsened, who were new- comers, what had changed. I had to smile as I watched the 7th graders walking timidly through the East Lobby doors. It was such a new experience for them! And hard to imagine that someday they too would be seniors. This school season brought new techniques in our system, new classes with new faculty members to teach them. Senior pic- tures are available now. Also, afternoon TA room is now obsolete- -much to the relief of many. All in all, with the dif- ferent and familiar things, I felt a slight sense of homecoming. It was sort of nice to be back, for just one more year, anyway. 1. First day as a senior. 2. It ' s confusing again. 3. PAY, according to class. 4. This year ' s Homecom- ing was a success for many reasons, one of which was our victory over the opposing team! The mighty Lions defeated Garrett in an action-filled game 27 to 0. At half-time, excite- ment continued with the crowning of the Homecom- ing Queen and the parade of floats. SENIOR CANDIDATES 1. Sheila Burger Nathan Beachy and Cindy Wilson. 2. The relief of all the last tests taken, my courses being closed out- I breathed a deep sigh, and shut my now empty locker for the last time . Walking down the abandoned hallway I heard echos of my voice drowning in all the other voices and footsteps at passing time, I walked past miy favorite classrooms, where all my worrying and last minute cramming had taken place, passed the cafeteria and its debatable meals. I walked passed the concession stand and turned around to buy my last Marathon and imm.ediately felt guilty! I opened the East Lobby doors and smiled at the telephone, remembering all the money I lost in the past 6 years . Then as I walked out into the sunshine, I took another deep breath, turned around to look for one last symbolic time and stepped forward into miy future . i . And now those years hold special mem- ories: of parties and trips, and after school joy rides; of games where we thrilled til the final seconds over narrow losses, and the sweet victories where our small country school teams overpowered or outplayed the big city schools , of new friends left behind as we passed through those most dif- ficult years of maturing. There ' s now little enough time left to bemoan home- work or detention — and it feels a little sad. But there are new and broader challenges down the road. Special Guest Stars 39 ( 1 ft ' 1 1 -j ; M „_ .[.liilii t 1 M Pi: 11 1 ' i l 1 LLl2 ' ' , l On March 19 and 20, forty-one seniors, Mr. Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Gabet set out to conquer the slopes of Cannonsburg, Michigan. And conquer they did! Eyeing the threatening slopes for the first time, the busload of apprehensive skiers burst forth with such memorable remarks as Never! and You ' ve got to be kidding! After the two days of skiing most had mastered the art of using tow ropes and avoiding mogles (or at least knowing what they were). Tne general leeimg seemed to include comrade- ship, excitement, and a large amount of shared aches and bruises. If these seniors can excel m life as bravely as they did on the slopes the class of ' 77 will go far! Special Guest Stars 4i Always remembered are the special times with close friends that make the year complete. These next twenty pages are dedicated to friends and ' times and everything that goes into the nine months of a year. Times like the gong show, the Girl ' s Basketball team which advanced to the Semi -State finals, that wonderful weather which caused so many school closings and other un- forgettable happenings. Sit back and enjoy the faces, they ' re special memories of a very memorable year. 42 Co -Starring Co -Starring 43 Lynn Anderson Shannon Atkinson Laura Augustyniak Brad Baker Sherry Beck Alan Behm To some it ' s that big guy down the hall who ironically gets smaller and smarter as his stu- dents get taller and older. And teachers are always around. They make you work, really work, They make you think. They nag you, they push you, they sit on you, they love you. They never give up on you til you ' ve given your best. And when school ' s over for you, the faculty will still be there. They ' ll be working with students, making them read and write and tear apart en- gines and frogs and seams, still typing and painting and singing — learning to live with the world ahead. 1 B H if .K l l b li I I 4 1 I Produced By i Richard Butt, Counselor 66 Prdaiiced By Herbert E. For ten years from now, striking out in the 2nd inning won ' t matter nearly as much as knowing how many horses Custer took with him to Little Big Horn, nor diat C=5 9 (F-39). But as the camera pans back across the school all is still and white . No school. The snow and cold and fuel sho rtages have taken their toll . Though many hardships , including industry shut-downs and pORTSM ANS4f AWAf?D ALLEN CO. BASKETBALL TdUR NEY 1977 i i5i i ; PP i5iiimiii ' ?i i, business closings resulted from the worst winter in Indiana ' s history, students (and 1 or 2 faculty) were delighted. For there was also a record number of snow days, 13 in all, two and a half times the old record of 5. And still it snowed . When scnool was in session, it was in 60° rooms because of the fuel shortage . Many basketball games were cancelled due to the snow but not the senior ski trip to Cannonsburg. Think Snow, they said, and think they did . Snow and winter fun for a weekend made special memories for the seniors . There were some things the snow didn ' t affect, however . It was the year of the ERA in athletics . The girls basketball team had its own state tourney and Leo ' s girls won the Regional title, before losing the title game of the Semi -State. Girls ' athletics brought home many ribbons and trophies in all areas this year, deserving the pride we felt for them. The old barriers went down, replaced by new achievements . And so closes the snow scene, to the pitter patter of little flakes lightly tapping the window pane , and the ground, and the trees, and the housetops and the little bunnies , and the big gorillas , and everything else is gone and all is w-h- i-t-e . . . When Act V finally came, it was Spring, and the snow finally left . It rained and rained, and rained . . . and the season of new things was on us . Enter actors and actresses, now dressed in white and blue jean painter pants , rocker bottom shoes , and shoes that tie around the ankles for girls. These are the fashions that made us, us. Many of the students had turned golden brown about this time, the result of their Spring break in the Sunshine State. Those who couldn ' t make it to Daytona got away to the exciting sounds of the Kiss mMmmm- - concert or A Star Is Born . A change of scene brings us to the Class Tourney, where the tug-of- war literally pulls whole classes together. For the second consecutive year the class of ' 78 swept away the lovely tin can trophy . Lights dim, action slows, candles set the mood for the next scene where couples are dining and dancing at the Black Rose. It ' s the Jr.-Sr. Prom, the romantic highlight of the Spring scene. And as no Act would be complete without its light comedy, so too does Spring appear accompanied by the pranks and high jinks of nearly everyone . Even the slapstick routines of water balloon -bombings and squirt guns seemed almost excusable relief to the two weeks of 90o temperatures . The seniors called for a senior-skip day which was rather successful, as was the mass detention held following the day of fun. They challenged the underclassmen to uphold their newly initiated tradition . The final Act, and then the action slows to final tests, final concerts , last day parties and partings . Some tears. Some relief. Some numbness . All finality for the seniors . Lockers are stripped bare, books returned, memories and pictures carefully tucked away. The last day is here. Underclassmen have the summer to look forward to and enjoy, knowing school will stay the same, waiting for them to return in the fall . But for the seniors it ' s different. They look to the future now and no longer to the past. Life will seem different for them without all these school happenings and precious memories. But they will walk out into the sunset, making new memories with jobs , or college, or marriage, to live happily ever after, we hope . And the narrator fades out and music and colors fill the screen, then slowly fades , too . The curtain closes, leaving all the memories of Scenes of ' 77 behind. Closing Credits OPENING . . .
