The Lions won their first five games in a row and then lost five straight. The Reserve was unde- feated and unscored upon with a fine 8-0 record. Varsity Coach, Mr. Lake, earned his first gray hairs at Leo as the Lions won against both Prairie Heights and Southern Wells in the final two minutes of play. The Lions ' strongest perfor- mances came against Lakeland and Churubusco while they also played a solid game in a losing effort against a tough Gar- rett team. Assistant Coaches: Mr. Gabet, Mr. Steinhauser, Mr. Kerbal, and Mr. Dubach helped the Lions tremen- dously in their prepar- ation for each game. Seniors, Lester Stoller, Cliff De Wells, and Gary Roberts, were selected All -Conference while Phil Bollier, Gehard Maier, and Junior Todd Holderman were Honor- able mention choices. This year was a rebuilding year as there were 3 freshmen, 5 sophomores, and 4 seniors on the squad. It was a very extraordinary year for them, be- cause Sue Miller was the first girl in Leo History to compete with the boys in a varsity sport. The school record was reset this year by Curtis Liechty, his time was 13:28. 17 BOTTOM LEFT TO RIGHT Mike Chambers, Steve Schlatter, Barry Delagrange, Mike Heller, Duane Hankey, David Grieger, TOP: Brad Little, Mike Shoaff, Gary Piatt, Kerry Miller, Rick Gerke, Conrad Beachy, Jeff Plart, Coach Stuckey. y Leo 15 Heratige 3 Leo 15 Heratige 13 Leo 15 Busco i2 Leo 15 Busco 8 Leo 15 Woodlan 2 Leo 15 Woodlan 4 Leo 15 Norwell 2 Leo 15 Norwell 4 Leo 15 Busco 1 Leo 15 Busco 11 Leo 15 Heritage 14 Leo 15 Heritage 6 Leo 15 Norwell 10 Leo 15 Norwell 3 Leo 15 Woodlan 9 Leo 15 Woodlan 7 Tourney Leo 15 Busco 7 Leo 15 Busco 12 Leo 12 Norwell 15 Leo 15 Norwell 4 Leo 15 Norwell 12 Leo 10 Norwell 15 Leo 15 Norwell 12 Leo 16 Norwell 14 Record Leo 11-0 18 VOLLEYBALL This year ' s volleyball team had a very produc- tive season again this year, by going undefeated. The volleyball team con- tinued its reputation by being one of the best teams in the area for the past couple of years. In the past five seasons of competition the Lions have compiled a record of 46-1 and have won the AC AC tourney all five ears. This year ' s team will suffer heavily in the graduation loss of Rick Gerke, Mike Shoaff, Duane Hankey, Conrad Beachy, Jeff Piatt, But the underclassmen will work hard to continue the reputation of the Lions in the next year ' s volley- ball competition. Conrad Beachy was selected All- Conference. VOLLEYBALL 19 The team was very small this year and they had a new coach, Mr. Butler. At ACAC they were defeated by a tough Norwell team, and had one injury, Sara Crabill, who was well by sectionals. They compiled a record of 13 wins - 3 losses. Everyone had a great year. 20 BASKETBALL ROW 1; Kathy Wells, Cindy Wil- son, Mona Yoder, Karen Gustin, Jill Garside, Becky DeWitt, ROW 2; Sara Grabill, Jeanne Little, Mr. Butler, Sheila Burger, Gina Brown, ROW 3; Gwen Minnick, Tina Brown, Sue Miller, Vicki Amstutz, Lori Augustyniak Won the conference with a 7-0 record BASKETBALL 21 This year the team was very young with 2 seniors, 3 juniors, 5 sophomores, 3 fresh- man. Although young we had experience from a super coach. Miss B. who lead us to a record of 9 wms 12 loses. In the ACAC we were de- feated in finals by Kor- well. We had lots of good times and the team will al- ways remember the time Cindy Wilson had to wear size 18 shorts and they hung to her knees all the fun times we had after games. 22 VOLLEYBALL GAA ROW 1; Miss Baumgartner, Gwen Minnick, Janet Shoaff, Beth Christman, Jeanne Little, Mona Yoder, ROW 2; Sara Grabill, Lori Augustyniak, Cindy Wilson, Tammy Hudson, Sherry Schaefer, ROW 3; Martha Smith, Teresa Piatt, Carol Liechty, Sheila Burger, Lana Yost VOLLEYBALL GAA 23 BOTTOM: Mgr. For most of the boys this was the first year that they had ever been on a wrestl- ing team. They lacked a lot of experience and were almost always considered underdogs. Being their first year, they usually wrestled in reserve meets but did wrestle a few var- sity matches. The leaders of this year ' s team were Bill Hicks, who had the record for die fastest pin in 20 seconds; Jon Stuck ey, who set the record for being pinned in the fastest 22 seconds; Glenn Gerke had the best individual record, 9-3; he also lead the team in points with 49 and re- corded the most pins of 4. This year ' s record was 1-8, but Coach Kerbal be- lieves that if there would have been more wrestlers participating that they could have beaten Woodlan, Busco, and Norwell. They lost all three of these close matches by forfeits. SPORTS 25 DIVISION 26 27 DIVISION DAVID G. LYON Dave ToukH banana ' s ELIZABETH LYNN SOUDER Meatball No kidding? With Brent KlophensteLn as in- valuable student director, Mr. Stover led his players through the adult comedy of a standard American family of an American Ambassador. The setting of the play was the Amer- ican Embassy in a Com- munist controlled country. The Senior High Drama Club truly out did them- selves in giving their au- diences a beautiful set, well-rounded characteriza- tions, and fast paced action. To show their ap- preciation, the audiences gave the talented group standing ovations every night! Pictures by R.D. Whissen ' ABOVE: The four principle players: Bill Purcell, Tony Hud- son, Lori Morgan, and Elizabeth Buckles. Tony Hudson again got the girl! This time it was delight- ful Lori Morgan. FAR RIGHT: Darrell Hankey and Martha Smith played the evil assistant, and the harried secretary respectively. RIGHT: Beth Buckles was, as al- v ays, outstanding! She played Marion Hollander, the wife. 140 PLAY FAR LEFT: The priest, who hap- pened to be an amateur magician, was wonderfully played by Dan Kissell, which earned him much praise. LEFT: A distraught Axel (Tony Hudson) held up a drunken sultan (Chuck Stailey) while his wife (Beth Kielar) looked on. BELOW FAR LEFT: Tony Wittwer played a quest at the party on the night the Hollanders attempted an escape. BELOW: Gordie Julius turned in a fine Krojack, who happened to be head of the Secret Police . ABOVE MIDDLE: Bill Purcell did an excellent job at playing the irascible Walter Hollander. FAR LEFT: David Martin gave an- other fine characterization as a French Chef. LEFT: Dawn Liechty made a lovely countess and Barb Daily played an efficient maid; both girls added a lot to the play. PLAY 141 Seniors continued from page 45. Our bicentennial yearbook staff consisted of a whole bunch of people and one teacher. Thank you goes to my assistant editors, Mona Yoder and Sherry Schaefer. They did the GAA divisions and teachers. Thank you to Ms, Lomont for designing our cover and for supervis- ing the photo club. Photo Club, thanks for all of the club and candid pictures and for spending time after school and at home to develop pictures. Thank you Conrad Beachy, Phil Bollier, and Les Stoller for doing a nice job on the boys ' sports. Candi Weilbaker, thank you for spending the time to go out and sell ads and for keeping our books straight. Jodi Lederman, thank you for doing the classes session. Lora Linn and Steph Wolfe, thank you for helping with the senior pages. Mr, Hoot, thank you for spending your extra time supervising us.
