As time went on, he studied, worked, swam and participated in the many activities of our school life. He was the kind of student who might not be noticed by many until an event occurred. Every member of the band knew that he had to put a great effort towards the success of the band. This year's con- certs proved that the small number was no hindrance to the quality of music that Leo traditionally exhibits. During the fall the band had as its marching conductor, Mr. Smulkis, who worked hard in the cool autumn mornings to create dis- 74 tinguished performances. As the football season drew to a close, thespotlight once again fell on the old maestro, Mr. Leo Henning. Mr. Henning once again demonstrated his skill in conducting a group of young men to musical achieve- ment. Special lthanks should be given to the moderator, Br. L. R. Christensen, who worked quietly behind scenes for the success of this year's concerts. lg, -H ' o - 1 -. H Tux TQ 14 1' X ' qi L . '- if wjiin, v. ff ff 'E-L,. , A I f- A. The 1968-69 Basketball season was the most successful one ini 22 years with the team advancing all the way to 'the finals of the Catholic League by defeating favored Hales in as exciting a game as you will ever see. The final score was Leo 52, Hales 51. Rated as favorites in the Rice game, the superior Lions fell because they tensed up under the pressure of the big game. Leo's inability to hit from the field in' the first three quarters enabled Rice to build up a 14 point lead. They finally started hitting in the fourth quarter but they could not over- come the deficit. Final score Rice 40, Leo 37. . Mr. O'Malley in his third year as coach of the Heavies rallied his team after pre-season losses in both .the Brother Rice and the Knights of Columbus tourneys. The Hales coach, in a newspaper interview, said he expected Leo to eventually be the prime contender for the crown. This was found to be true as Leo was the only team in the playoffs which man- aged to beat highly favored Hales. The success of this year's team is credited to the finest starting lineup in the league. All-Star Marty Carroll at center and Bob Connors at guard provided most of the scoring punch throughout the year. Rebounding off the boards was accomplished very successfully by John Hopkins and Junior Sidney Williams. Offensive and defensive ball-handling at its best was seen in Aston Gills performance. E. Manzke, B. Standring and Tom Krull provided the help needed from the bench. Vi Much credit is due to both the team and the coach for the fine season they have had this year in finishing second in the Catholic League. This year's Lions started the season with the realization that no game would be an easy one. With only seven seniors on the team, lack of experience would seem to be a major obstacle for consistent victory. As it -turned out this was the major obstacle, with many costly mistakes enabling opponents to rack up large unapproachable scores. The team was basically a very good one who, with a little determination and spirit, should be a real city threat next year. During the course of the year the sometimes colorful. exciting action was to be admired. ln the opening game of the season, Leo held Playoff-bound Gordon Tech for all but the final 3 minutes when Gordon scored 2 quick tallies. Final score Leo 0, Gordon 19. Our first league game was against Loyola Academy, where the Lions tried for the upset of the year, however our attack bogged in the last minutes of the fourth quarter l los and again mistakes enabled Loyola to score 3. The speed of Hales and the aerial attack of Rice routed the Lions, although the Hales game was not the rout the scores indicated. In the next two contests the weaker portion of the Catholic League faced Leo and this saved the Lions from a winless season. The homecoming game was perhaps our finest game against eventual city champ Mendel. Leo finallyistarted mov- ing the ball very well and the majority of the game was played in Mendel territory. Although Leo dominated the play on the ground, Mendel's aerial attack and Leo's lack of it were the deciding factors of that contest. The Carmel game was hard fought, but the Lions were already out of it and the lack of enthusiasm showed they knew it. Though the season was a disappointment, the coaching staff, Mr. Hanlon, Mr. Kelly and Mr. Swast should be com- mended for their long hours preparing the team for next year. Notables on the defending League champion were Aston Gill, james Noe, Ron Hammond, Bob Myers. Leo commenced the season by taking first in the Catholic League All-Star Meet, thanks to the combined effort of all the mem- bers of the team. Next came the AAU Meet in which Leo tied Northwestern University for third place in a field of 63 teams. Leo did well in both Catholic League meets, tak- ing second in South Section. At the city qualifications Leo ran into an unfortunate set of circumstances as Ron Hammond, the league's leading hurdler, II8 failed to qualify, and james Benton, also a hurdler, was in- jured hitting a hurdle. At the meet itself the contest appeared to be between Br. Rice and Leo. The two teams finished in a tie at the end of the field events. Leo had a slight edge when disaster struck. Aston Gill, the league's premier runner, sustained an injury to his ankle, which perhaps was the de- ciding factor of the meet. Br. Rice capitalized on his absence. Ron Hammond suddenly became ill and Leo was able to sal- vage only third place. Once again Brs. Kennedy and Doyle and Ford gave unselfishly of their time and efforts to create another winning team.
