Such cooperation is evidenced by many improvements they have been able to finance throughout school. The purchase of new equipment for the biology lab was project for this year. Another successful year was launched early in September with freshman mothers' Tea. The new members were welcomed by officers and board members and by Brother Ryan. By the end of September another page was already written in Mothers' Club history with the first successful fund raising event, namely, a rummage sale. The annual card party and salad luncheon were also very successful, the the the the the financially and socially. The monthly meeting programs were carefully planned to appeal to the tastes of all the members. The Christmas party for the Brothers, a Roaring Twenties Cabaret Partyi' for the Leo fathers, and programs by the school band and glee club were some of the highlights. The spiritual activities of the year included an evening of recollection given by the chaplain, Father Novak, the family communion breakfast, the annual memorial Mass for deceased alumni and parents, and the graduates' communion breakfast. if . .5 Mrs. Leo Henning addresses combined Mothers' and Fathers' the Roaring Twenties Cabaret Party. FATHER9' CLUB ' From the first father and son night to the Spring Banquet at Kilty's, the Fathers Club this year was complete success. The fathers at various times during the year, were brightened by Br. Miller's com- ments, entertained by Notre Dame football coaches, and grieved to learn of the deaths of some of their fellow members. However, the generous insurance program assures the school of the son's tuition if such an unfortunate incident should occur. From these contortions emerged the intricate formations which entertained Leo football fans during the half time shows. No parade was complete without our musical Lions. With the arrival of winter, the band was reorganized for the concert season under Mr. Leo Henning. As the band grew in proficiency, they presented well-planned concerts at the girls' schools and at the Mothers' Club meeting. This year was highlighted by a concert trip of the band to New York which kept their convivial moderator, Bro. W. G. Acker, quite busy. Excellence was acquired through the hard work and co-operation between the singers under the clever baton of Mr. Frank Manna. Bro. McNamara, in his fourth consecutive year as moderator, was kept busy by supplying his organizational talents. With an imaginative com- mittee, Brother arranged several dance socials and the year end picnic, successful events as usual. Concert seasonkbegan early in December and continued through May. Two Christmas programs were performed for the parents and friends and the yearly tour was held after the holidays. Several of our South Side girls' schools comprised the tour agendag through these performances the chorus attained the professional experience needed for the annual Spring Musical Festival, a joint project with the Band. For this event the help of the girls was needed. They worked hard each Friday evening to supply the top notes in singing of the medleys from 'iMy Fair Lady and Okla- homa . The year ended successfully as planned, and the 1966 Glee ,Club proved to be one of the finest choral groups to mount the stage beneath the Orange and Black. Glee Club Officers: TOP ROIV: J. ORIOLE This year the Oriole had a new moderator, namely Br. A. A. Cannon. Together with co-editors, Rich Delaney and Paul Kane, and a staff of twenty-five students, an excellent newspaper was turned out every time. To make sure the paper turned out well, it had to pass the approval of Br. Cannon, who encouraged critical thinking by the editorial staff and writers. This is noted in the Oriole'J charter. A few comments are to be noted about the Oriole. First, the Oriole was one of the largest cirallated school papers in the city. Secondly, the Oriole contained every- thing one could ask for in a daily newspaper Cwith the ex- ception of want ads, weather forecasts, and a lovelorn columnj. Finally, advertisers came to the Oriole to ask for their ads to be published. The Oriole did not go to them. 'Vi m ..rr fr.. . Two projects that were considered were the build- ing of a weather station and the construction of a telescope. Each Thursday afternoon the members came together in the physics lab and exchanged views on various points of scientific interests. 84 LIBRARY CLUB This year the members of our library club pledged hemselves to the service of their fellow students. DANCE COMMITTEE The Homecoming Dance, following the victory over St. Laurence, icomrnenced the 1965-66 calendar of Leo social activities. Br. Miller coordinated the efforts of the committee members in obtaining the Brainerd Club Hall and the musical entertainment of the Tnzclezvifzfix. Coe Francis and Ioan Mitchell reigned over this, the first of many successful dances. There were several post-basketball game dances held in our auditorium, all of which had live enter- tainment. Br. Miller donated his valuable time and effort to planning and supervising these events. Unfortunately, amid all these successful dances, one major event never got underway. Br. Miller could not generate enough student support to launch the junior-Senior Dinner Dance. Undaunted, however, Br. Miller made plans for the Senior prom, held again at Valley View Farm. This was an overwhelming success and a memorable occasion for the Class of '66. Dramatics is an interpretative art requiring imaginative expression by actors under the guidance of their director. It has for its purpose to amuse, to examine, to protest, and most certainly to instruct. The Leo Drama Club has for its purpose the acquisition of dramatic knowledge and experience through the actual production of plays. Again this year, Leo participated in the Chicago Actors Associated Tourna- ment of Plays. Seeking something different in a contest offering, the group pre- sented a poetic drama entitled The Wall by Vern Powers. The play depicts the several meanings of freedom and the sacrifices that one must be willing to pay for personal freedom. The cast was headed by Pat Daly, voted best Leo actor, two girls borrowed from the Drama Club of the Academy of Our Lady, Donna Daly and Rose- mary Morris, and veterans Mike Flynn, Pat Henning, Larry LaPine, and Dave Ogorzaly. The 1965 Lions plunged into an exciting season with victories over Gordon Tech and DePaul. These victories, though not in league competition, were omens of the future. In the opening game of the regular season, the Lions scored twice in the fourth quarter to beat a highly rated Brother Rice squad, giving them their only loss in South Section play. The Lions exhibited a strong defense and lightning of- fense in the Carmel game, the league's traditionally hard- est fought contest. The final score showed the demise of another city-bound team. In the St. Rita game, the Lions met their first disap- pointment in being able to salvage merely a tie with the South Section leaders. It was a game which could have gone either way. Tom Holden was outstanding with 12 points, while quarterback Coe Francis and end Ioe Walsh accounted for the remaining 8 points. The next two contests for the Lions were with St. Laur- ence and a newcomer, Hales Franciscan, both easy prey. In the final game of the regular season, against Mendel, the Lions were faced with a must win. Throughout this crucial game, the Lions showed a fine fighting spirit, this, coupled with hard running, pin-point passing, and the best line play in the league gave Leo the South Section crown for the fourteenth time in its history. The first playoff game, with Gordon, began with an enemy touchdown at the opening kickoff. But the never- say-die Lions bounced back, and within two minutes Leo had the lead, 8-7. By the middle of the fourth quarter, how- ever, the score was Gordon 25, Leo 16. Then, with two minutes remaining, the Lions roared back with two touch- downs to win and advance into the Catholic League finals against Loyola. jay Standring, voted the Most Valuable Player on the team, scored twice while Holden, Francis, and Kimmey provided the rest of the points. The Lions met the Ramblers in rain-soaked Soldier Field to battle for the Catholic League title. The Lions' spirit never wavered, but the city-bound Ramblers dealt Leo its only loss of the season. This year's team ranks among the best Leo has seen for several years. Every player deserves credit for making it so. The honor roll of players selected for all-star teams includes Coe Francis, Jay Standring, Tom Holden, and Larry Kimmey from the backfield, and Jim Kleidon, Joe Walsh, jerry Prosser, and Bill Turek from the line. Quar- terback Coe Francis was also named to the Illinois State All-Star team. , 'E f I 5 unify an el M lt li ai? l ll it ll ll it I l ,Stl w ' A ll il ll W' K f Dr. J. A. I 03 BASKETBALL Since it followed such a dismal practice season, the suc- cess of the Heavies in the South Section was a pleasant sur- prise. Although they predictably lost to the section giants, Carmel and Rita, the Heavies were not without talent. Kevin Connors, Pat Henning, and Chuck Hrebic were all among the top ten scorers. Their third place finish was respectable in a very competitive league. And there were shades of glory as it seemed during the last few moments of the first tilt with Carmel that a great upset was in the making. The Lights utilized a combination of exceptional talent and fighting spirit to win the South Section crown in spite of a lackluster pre-season record. Under the leadership of their co- captains jerry Shannon and jim Stankiewicz, the Lights, at this writing, had all the qualities of a team ready for the league title. Moreover, the experienced and capable coaching of Mr. O'Malley were excellent reasons for such universal optimism. The Bantams and Flys responded well to their adept coach- ing by Br. Jackson with the Bantams turning in a fine record and both teams holding much promise for the future. Even Rita's giant hand had a hard time shooting around Sims. I04 Coach jim Lamkin imparts to his team some strategic advice during a crucial time-out. Despite a three-on-one situation, Hrebic makes it look easy. HEAVIEQ: TOP ROIVJ T. Booth, G. Perona, L. After incurring a loss by Mendel, the mat-men bounced back with victories over Calumet Q39-ij and Luther South C43-5j. The transfer of Br. McKenna to New York left the position of head coach to Br. G. G. Lindeman, a one-time member of the Leo swimming team. Once the teams were organized and practice schedules worked out, the season got into full swing. Under co-captains Frank Bressendorf and Joe Larmon, both varsity and junior teams maintained impressive records. Among the more notable victories were varsity championships in the Leo and St. Philip invitationals and j.V. championship in Leo's invitational. This year's diving team was again under the direction of Br. Millerg the divers added valuable points to those of the swimmers in each of the meets. Daily work- outs consisted in trampoline and board exercises. All of the divers gained price- less experience, and each showed a tremendous improvement as the season progressed.
