MOLLGY Posfor MR. LAWRENCE A. DOLL Dedication While Mr, Lawrence A. Doll contributed immeasurably to the development of Leo High School through the energy and efficiency which he manifested during his ten years as instructor and sixteen years as registrar, it is for his qualities ot soul thatwe shall remember him always. Mr. Doll's humble helpfulness, his conscientious industry, and, most of all, his personal, practical brand of everyday sanctity have inspired Leo students through the years. Our only earthly comfort at his untimely death is thatMr, Doll has exerted an indelible influence on the lives andthoughts otLeograduates--past, present, and to come. In recognition of this fact, we graduates hereby dedicate this l962 LION to his memory as a tangible indication ot our unceasing love and admiration. 4 As We shall rfmcmlrer him , X at 74' U 'Ns REV. BR. P. L. O'HARE Principal MY DEAR GRADUATES, Both you ond I have iust completed tour years in Leo High School. During this time you have been preparing for this Commencement -- some of you to begin the long years of higher studies, some, your lite in this work-o-day world. Your Teachers at Leo have tried to instill into you several ideals: love of God, love of your Country, loyalty to your family and your school, and the desire to comport yourselves always as Catholic Gentlemen. Most of you in the future will makeus proud to have had a hand in your training. I hope and pray that you allwill do so. Remember that ot Leo the Brothers will pray daily for you. Do not neglect your own efforts toward your salvation. ln all your difficulties turn to Mary -- she will not tail you. May God bless' and keep you all. Sincerely, 8 fr! V 711, ' f I 'if . C... J . The Sodality has united a group of Leo students in the pursuit of perfection. This elite corps binds itself by promise to a program of prayer and charitable works, designed to lead them unerringly on this course. The Sodality might be regarded as a Ieaven, which raises the level of spiritual life at Leo by the example of its members. The League of the Sacred Heart endeavors to spread devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. To this end, the League encourages attendance at First Friday Mass and prayer for the Pope's intentions. CISCA is intended to train Catholic students in Catholic Action. The Lions trounced Holy Trinity 34-I6 in a practice game, and then, with spirit typical of Leo, marched successfully over St. Ignatius, Mendel, and Mt. Carmel in three of the mostinspiring contests in Leo gridiron history. A 45 yard pass with only twenty seconds left in the first half spelled defeat for the Wolves, three quick touchdowns in the second quarter overcame an early Monarch lead, and two brilliant ten yard passes from Mike Lux to Bill Conlonwerethe deciding factors in the Carmel game. By defeating Mt. Carmel, the Lions whipped theteam which was last year's city champion and this year'sfavoriteto take the same crown. The Caravan outweighed us by more than twelve pounds per man but with diehard determination and spirit, the Lions beat Carmel 26-I6. However, the team suffered a letdown after this game and disastrously fell victim to Brother Rice, St. Rita, and Gordon Tech in the final three games ofthe season. Erass-Haunfry Following the example of its predecessors, the '6l Cross-country team, under the direction of Brother Comack, compiled a very creditable record. Their success can be attributed to hours of hard practice and superior depth in all events. Moreover, the early start obtained by practicing in Ryan's Woods, ensured that all the Leo Harriers were in excellent shape when they met their first Catholic League foe. Relying heavily on itsfew returning regulars, including co-captains, Denny O'Connell and Ed Bauernfreund, the senior team was bolstered by several newcomers, and a number of graduates from the junior squad. Lions, Lions . . . echoed through DePaul Alumni Hall long after the Leo Cagers had closed their i962 capaign by falling to Gordon Tech, the League Champions, by a margins of four points. Leo fanswere treated to many great moments of basket- ball by their team, from the opening tilts ofthe season, when the Lions dealt the highly-rated Gordon Rams and Loyola Ramblers their only losses in pre-season competition, through the annual DePaul Holiday Tournament, to the climactic final game which brought the sectional title to Leo. ln league competition our Heavies closed with an honorable record of eight wins and two losses to don the South Section Crown for the fourth consecutive year. Leo men will long remember Ed Manzke lM.V.P.l stealing the ball and breaking down court all alone, Tom Joyce sinking one of his famous 30-foot iump shots, Co- Captain Bill Keenan firing through all defenders for an impossible lay-up, or Bob Lanning and John Reilly out-iumping the tallest opponents to bring down another rebound for the Orange and Black. In the Lightweight division the Lions again fielded acompetent squad. Led by Captain Bob Hallberg they compiled a respectable record of seven wins and three losses in the League competition. Both l962 Leo teams brilliantly exemplified the Arneberg ideal: a team that plays with all its heart to win for Leo. Crack Spring was long in arriving here in Chicago, but Leo's track team was favored with the exclusive use of Washington' Park Armory during the long winter. When the season opened the cindermen unveiled a talented iunior team, andasmall but polished senior team. Outstanding as senior runners were Ed Bauernfruend and Denny O'Connell, co-captains of this year's team. Both these stars were the pivot men around which the team revolved. Although the teams did not fare too well in Catholic League play, many excellent individual performances were turned in. President Tom Cranston and Secretary Don Royhl, along with seniorsJohnJamison and John Prinz, turned in repeatedly good performances throughout the year. The intramural teams went into action on Thursday and Friday afternoons. Stiff competition was supplied throughout the year by eighteen school teams. The Noble Souls took first place as John Schofield, a iunior, took high game honors with a 237, along with the high series of 62l. The high average was held by John Prinz with a l7l. The season was terminated in April, followed by the annual banquet in May at Mickelberry's Restaur- ant, where the winners were awarded trophies. 150 ufliug S.- ,,, ....,., - V- f- --M v oFFicERs D. McKenna FRESHMAN DIVER B. COLUNS DISPLAYS GOOD FORM The Leo Swimming Squad came under the direction of Br. C. K. McKenna this year. From the beginning, the new Mentor introduced many training procedures, including calisthenics, wind sprints and weight-lifting. Led by Ccrcaptains W. Swiderski and P. Stoffey, the Seniors tallied only four wins against ten losses. ln the annual city meet, the Senior Sea Lions placed ninth. This unimpressive record does not reflect individual ability, butonly the lack of depth on the team. The season record of the Juniors was ten-six, andthe un- derclass Finmen returned from the Catholic League Finals with fifth place honors. Our swimming Lions closed their l962 campaign in grand fashion at the Fifth Annual Leo Invitational. In this meet our Juniors took first place honors, whilethe Senior squad finished a close second behind highly-rated Weber. vw . c .,f' .I V I 7 S if TNTTMX' , ,7,1 gixhgi VQ., .,., ,. tl. Casey, L. Kelly, W. Warren, D. Barshis, D. Walton, G. McConaghy The lingering winter forced along delay on the open- ing of the golf season. Living room carpets provided some opportunity to take the bugs out of putting, and an occasional clearing of the snow permitted a little practice in approach shots, but it wasn't until April that Br. Coogan's golf team was able to take to the fairways. Short on senior players, the club shows high caliber material in its underclassmen.
