Principal Wp, the Graduates of 1961, are honored and pleased to dedicate this edition of the Lion to our Principal, Reverend Brother T. B. Regan, in appreciation of the guidance and direction he has given to our lives. Brother Regan has ne cr ceased to apply himself to the betterment of Leo and its students. It is un- fortunate for the classes that follow us, that this is Brother Regan ' s final year as the capable director of Leo High School. It is our sincere wish that success will be with him always in his noble work as a Christian Brother of Ireland, in whatever capacity this work may place him. Inivf Leot Biotlur J. D. Regan Principal My Dear Graduates; You arc in the vigorous springtime of your li (s, a time when your ideals are still fresh and untainted, a time of igorous giowtii when you are preparing to blossom lorth into the realizations of your fond ho]K ' s and ambition.. Only too often the late spring frosts of sloth, lust, irresponsibility and lack of will power nip the plant even before the carlieit hopes are realized. Then too others haxing blossomed forth into flowers of success, are scared by the pursuit of false principles and teachings before the fruit of success is fully ripened. Dear graduates, your early years have been spent in the garden of Claiholic culture, bathed in the sim;hine of God ' s grace and refreshed by the air and tiie rain of His life-giving sacraments. Like the light-giving stars your Catholic ideals point the way to everlasting success. In such surrounding, you, without fail, will blo.ssom into loyal, patriotic, successful citizens of this world and bear good fruit, becoming the likeness of your Creator, vour eternal reward. Your Iruit shall remain forever. Dear graduates, farewell. May God and His hoK Mother be with you always. Sincerely yoius, 4 anil Inistration . . ;qi) BR T C. Mr. Allegretti, as guidance counselor for the school, has accepted the responsihility of relaying all available information conserning entrance tests, scholarships, and college methods of teaching. Accordingly, Mr. Allegretti has instituted the highly successful college night which affords the student the opportunity to receive first-hand information regarding courses, tutition, and scholarships. Resides these services, various or- ganizations in the school such as the Sodality and the League of the .Sacred Heart help the student to establish good religious habits which will remain with him for the rest of his life. Martin Moderator The Lion for 1961 has attempted to depart from the nonn established at Leo over the years — to present Leo from a fresh point of view. Two problems have faced Lion staffs from the time of the first yearbook: the large number of students who must be featured, and scarcity of scenery occasioned by the rather limited Leo campus. In attempting to solve these problems, the Lion staff has been forced to relegate to the wastebaskct many grand schemes, and to accent the time-honored format as the only practical answer to many difficulties. It is believed though, that even a casual glance through this volume will reveal a number of inno- vations. The latest Lion spoits a new cover, featuring the heraldic lion rampant. This theme, once adopted, committed the staff to dignity. In order to maintain this theme, the seniors were photographed in formals, and there was no attempt to include caiicatures or cartoons. The latter item might be explained also by the fact that we happened to have no cartoonist. We tried: we hope you like it. DARKROOM STAFF Bob Moroney, Photographer; Ed Murphy, . Although the pubhshing of a school newspaper becomes more involved and complex every year, the Oriole staff of 1961 has again supplied the school with six mcmoraijle editions of the paj er. The highlights of the year were the junior and senior issues. These issues provided many amusing and interesting bits of in- formation on our more popular students. The paper itself is divided into three sections; news, features, and sports. Each section is supervised by an editor. The editor-in-chief co-ordinates the activities of the entire staff. The office of the editor-in-chief has been held by Jim Nickel. The news staff under Bob Schwellenbach keeps the stu- dents informed on the happenings around the school. The features department strives to add a bit of humor to the paper. Heading the columnists are Jim Kozlow- ski and Stan Strzelccki, editors, assisted by Pat Rattigan and Mat Nemtusak. The sfxirts department vmder Rich Mahcr and Boh Petcisoti piDvidcs the studriUs with an account of the many sports at Leo. The expert photography of Bob Moroney enlivens the Oriole with a picture record of events that a verbal description could not adcc|uatelv portray. Leo students con- gratiilate 15r. Because of a strong line and a balanced running attack, Leo reached the semi-finals of the playoffs where th ey met defeat at the hands of St. George. The Lions started the season disastrously by losing their opening game to Mendel 38-12. but this was no indication of their future. Leo rebounded from their loss to the Mon- archs by defeating DcLaSalle 32-0, Rita 30-18 and St. Ignatius 20-8. They then encountered the eventual City Champions, Mt. Carmel, The Lions played great ball in the first half, which ended in a scoreless tie. Cannel scored their touchdown on a fake field goal attempt midway through the third quar- ter, and held on for a 6-0 triumph. Again Leo rebounded from a heart-breaking defeat. They terminated regular season play by beating St. Elizabeth 14-0 and Brother Rice 8-0. In their first playoff game the Lions met and triumphed over a large and powerful Gordon Tech team 22-14. In the next game Leo ' s opponent, St. George, romped to a 20-0 halftime lead. In the second half Leo came out fighting and scored a quick touchdown. However, St. George added two touchdowns at the end of the period to ensure themselves of victory. Irwin Moderator SENIOR CAPTAINS Bob Reimcr, Jim Thompson, and Hugh McGourty Although severely handicapped by the return of only four letteiTnen, the senior swimming team managed to compile a respectable 7-10 record in dual meet competition. Most of this year ' s strength was to found in 2nd and 3rd year, although seniors Jim Thompson, Bob Reimer, Hugh McGourty and Carl Peterson did turn in some fine individual jjerformances. The bright future for the team lies in the fact that almost all of our first line swimmers will be back next year and will be joined by five or six outstanding sophomores led by Tom Burke, Mike Casey, and Frank Parker. These boys will join such outstanding varsity perfonners as Bill Swider- ski, and Phil and Jerry Stoffey. These, and others too numerous to mention, should give Leo one SENIORS STANDING: Br. The junior team, led by the above-mentioned sophomores, put together a fine 12-5 record and gained many individual honors during the long season. In addition, this year ' s freshman class con- tributed so many fine swimmers to the squad that it would be impossible to mention all of them. However, special mention should be made of Bill Ward, Ron Koch, Rill Sheehan, Al Va.sius, Bill Woodall and Dick Harper who will foirn the nucleus of next year ' s junior team. This should be one of the best junior squads in Leo history. A fine season was brought to a fitting conclusion on March 19th when Br. Ii-win presented the 4th annual Leo Invitational .Swimming Meet in which over 200 boys, representing seven Catholic League schools, took part. In the first lunch period, the race has narrowed down to two teams, 4E (11-0) and 2H (10-1). The second lunch period is a contest between 4D (8-1) and 3B (8-2). In the third lunch period 3A (10-1) leads, but 4C (9-2) and 4F (8-2) are making it a tighter race. When regular season play has ended, the four leading teanis in each period will ie for a playoff berth. The Uion staff of 1961 would have found this task imjxissible without the unselfish assistance of a host of helpers too numerous to mention. However, we wish to extend special thanks to the Leo Fathers ' Club and the Mothers ' Club for their financial aid in outfitting the darkroom, to VValinger Studios for portrait photography and group pictures, to the Norman King Company for help with lay- outs, and to the faculty and student body for their cooperation and encouragement.
