Molloy Page 3 DEDICATION It is with great pleasure that we, the Faculty and Students of Leo High School, through the Lion staff, dedicate this edition of our yearbook to Chicago ' s new archbishop, the Most Reverend Albert Gregory Meyer. Like our late beloved Samuel Cardinal Stritch, he has come to us after having served as archbishop of Milwaukee. He, too, is known as a great scholar, educator, preacher, and builder. May this yearbook form Leo ' s share of the heart- felt welcome that all Chicago has extended to His Excellency. We add our prayerful wishes for a long and blessed reign. Archbishop Albert Gregory Meyer ' t ■ . ■ K ' ' . ' ' , ■iJF ' ft -- I  Many Leo men will long remember that unbeatable Leo spirit, that un- quenchable school pride, and that desire to pile honor upon honor as an inseparable part of their school life at Leo. But high school days do not last forever. The seniors graduate, leaving Leo to the many students who will follow and keep up its s pirit and its pride in accomplishment. Between these covers is a record of this school year at Leo. We hope that it will recall many happy memories. Regan, Principal Dear Graduates: I like to think of each graduating class as a distinct personality. A class is a dis- tinct personality, for it is formed from new groups. The class of 1959 is well bal- anced — it has a good scholastic rating as well as athletic prowess. Class ' 59 is a cultured gentleman and. I think one may safely say, a very good Catholic. God has created man for life. He made him with all possibilities of develop- ment and expansion. God desires that we cooperate with His grace in unfolding our inner possibilities. Time is lent to man for the continued flowering of his capabilities. It is an era of growth in which his personal life develops towards Heaven. The world. Dear Graduates, in which your personality must unfold itself is, in part, brightened with promise of more abundant life and, in part, it is overcast by the fear of a catastrophic war. One cannot erase from the mind of man the knowledge of the atomic nucleus with all its fearful possibilities of destruction. However, you, Dear Graduates, with your developed talent can channel the forces of atomic energy into peaceful ways beneficial to mankind. In other words, use your capabilities to the fullest so that your influence for good will be felt in your respective fields. It is difficult to imagine what course this new era will take. There is one sure route that will see you safely through it and lead you to your eternal destiny and that is the path pointed out by Holy Mother Church. Dear Graduates, let your faith be your guiding light. Live by it always. God bless and keep you always. Sincerely yours y. Br ADMINISTRATION Br. J. C. Collins Vice-Principal Mr. L.A. The Lions started the season slowly, yielding to both Weber and St. George in practice games. Nevertheless, at the official opening of the season we defeated the newcomer to the league, Brother Rice H. S. Then with spirit typical of Leo, we marched successively over Mt. Carmel, Mendel, and St. Rita in three of the most inspiring contests of Leo gridiron history. These victories, plus another over a hapless St. Elizabeth team, gave us the South Section crown and pitted us once again against Weber in the playoffs for the City Championship. After beating Weber by a score of 20-14. we played Gordon Tech. Tliis game, al- though we lost it, truly exemplified the undying courage of our team. As a result of the many injuries our players received while playing other teams than Gordon, it was said that the Lions were held together only by tape and the desire to win. Since we did lose this game to Gordon, it can only be concluded that the tape didn ' t hold out, but the spirit did. and the courage of this year ' s Lions will long remain a symbol of sportsmanship and a tribute to the name of Leo. Although Leo ' s seniors finished second in the Loyola Invitational Run, medals were won by Jim Mooney, .John Pendergast, and Norm Burns. Bob Hughes and Ed Russell took first and second in the Junior City Meet, though our juniors lost to St. Mel for the championship. Denny O ' Connell also won a medal in this race. Dan O ' Leary broke the Senior Novice record as he won easily in 11:26. In Junior Novice, both John Maloney and Chuck Mastro won ribbons. In the Sun-Times Championship, Jim Mooney won first place, as he had done for the last two years, and won another gold medal setting a course record of 11:04.4. John Pendergast and Bob Hughes received silver medals, and Ed Russell, Jim McGreal, Bill Casey, and Dan O ' Leary were awarded bronze medals. Denny O ' Connell and John O ' Neil won gold medals for second and fifth in the Sun-Times Novice division, while Bob Peterson received a silver medal and John Corsey a bronze medal. Reinke, Bob When bowling season opened this year, Mr. Reinke had signed some eighty boys to Leo ' s bowling league. All of these hopeful bowlers started a rough season, but they gradually smoothed out their faults and began striving for trophies awarded at the annual banquet. At the present time the Timber Tumblers captain- ed by Bob Melcher, the league secretary, are in first place. Individual honors are held by Tom McNellis with a 618 series, Don Drummond with a brilliant 170 average, and Don Butz with a high game of 254 About two months after the opening of the league inter-school bowling began. The top twenty bowlers were selected to comprise a senior and junior team. Both of these teams are currently in first place in the South Section and are looking forward to city titles. Irwin, and built around Jim Mulcrone and Joe Moisan (co-capts. ), fought it ' s way through another victorious season. With the loss of only three meets the Lions defeated Mt. Carmel, Brother Rice, and St. Phillip, twice each, and Weber, De Paul, St. Ignatius, and St. Patrick, once each, giving them a grand total of ten Catholic League wins as against only three losses. The Senior Squad ' s fine record is due to the splendid work of such seniors as Terry Soenen, Mike Merrick, and Tony LaPorta; and to the work of such juniors as Tom Kilroy, Bill Bush, Phillip Meyers. Because this book went to press before the Leo golf team teed off it ' s first official meeting, information concerning the team ' s progress is latent. However, from past records, we can safely predict that this year ' s golf team, coached by Br. Manning, and led by such men as Richard McCarthy, John Powell, Giles Kruse, John Motier and Dennis Doll, will make a splendid showing at its annual tournament, held shortly after graduation. The main feature of the club ' s activities comes with the annual inter-scholastic tournament which determines the champion netmen in the various classes. T FATHERS ' CLUB One of the vital organizations of Leo, the Fathers ' Club, has completed another successful year for the benefit of Leo. Num- bering among the year ' s copious accomplish- ments are the Football Summer Camp, tuition assistance to the students of deceased dads, the many banquets encompassing all views of Leo life and activity, the monthly meet- ings arousing the ardent interest of the Dads in their son ' s school, and the annual Talent Show for the purpose of developing the tal- ents of Students of Leo. The executive com- mittee which has brought the above accomp- lishments to an excellent conclusion, has consisted of Mr. John Finerty, Junior Vice- President; Mr. George Busse, Sophomore Vice-President; Mr. George Dilley, Recrea- tional Secretary; Mr. Elmer Preiser, Corres- sponding Secretary; Mr. Edward Stevens, Treasurer; and Br. MOTHERS ' CLUB When the school year began last September, the Mothers ' Club was one of the first to get down to work. They immediately employed their efforts in a variety of undertakings. Of the more social endeavors the card parties, which proved most satisfac- torily successful; the Brothers ' Christmas Party, which is an annual occurrence; and the Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show, which brought the year to a dramatic conclusion; made up the year ' s calendar. A Day of Recollection held in February gave a great deal of satisfaction to the attending members. The Mothers have recently undertaken the rejuvenation of the Leo cafeteria, for which Leo students extend their sincerest thanks. Assisting the organization in this successful year, the executive committee con- sisting of Mrs. James Loftus, President; Mrs. James Hoey, Vice-President; Mrs. George Hallenbeck, Alumni Vice-President; Mrs. Frank LaPorta, Senior Vice-Presi- dent; Mrs. Thomas Moran, Junior Vice-President; Mrs. John P. Leo graduates are kept in close communication with Leo through a flourish- ing organization, the Alumni Association. Acting as a connecting bond, the As- sociation sponsors such affairs as the Annual Alumni Banquet and the more recently established Alumni Dance. , Plans have been undertaken for the preparation of an add book. All profit obtained from this endeavor will be employed in the establishment of a scholar- ship for some deserving student planning on attending Leo. This is a highly com- mendable goal; and we of Leo truly hope for its realization. Assisting the Alumni Association to such great aims, this year ' s officers in- clude: John Dunne, President; James O ' Neil, 1st Vice-President; Thomas Joyce, 2nd Vice-President; Joseph Stackler, 3rd Vice-President; Joseph Gavin. OFFICERS: Joseph Zednik, John Murphy, John Sanfilippo, and Richard Fossier. SODALITY The Sodality of Our Lady, under the beneficial direction of Br. McCormack, was instituted at Leo three years ago. In these few years the Sodality ' s members have been few, but her accomp- lishments have been many. Among the numerous projects during the past year are the trips made to the Guardian Angel Orphange to bring presents and candy for the children, providing break- fast after morning Mass for the students during Lent, helping out at the near-by hospitals every week, supplying a religious pamphlet rack for the .students and other worthwhile activities too numerous to Hst. Though the rules of the Sodality do not bind under pain of sin, a degree of obligation for her members does certainly exist. Besides the weekly meetings, the Sodalist must attend the Holy Sacrifice at least three times a week, recite a daily meditation, and follow the other regulations which make him a better Catholic and in- dividual. Brother McCormack is also the director of other religious activities at Leo, The League of The Sacred Heart and Cisca. Br. P. D. Second row: John Howard, James Dore, Kenneth Sands, Ronald Super, Henry Stocker, and John Lenihan. Missing from picture are Ralph Cistaro, Thomas Coghlan, Bernard Murray, John Healy, and Michael McCabe. CISCA Cisca, Chicago Inter-Student Catholic Action, is the official program of Catholic Action for all the Catholic students of all high schools located in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Cisca includes the Sodality of Our Lady IS well as the League of the Sacred Heart in its membership and relies on them to develop some of its greatest and most capable leaders for the huge Cisca organization such as John Murphy who is the president of Cisca for the coming school year. Left to right: William O ' Neill, John Murphy, Thomas Motier, Edward Felsenthal, and Michael McHale. Father Murphy, as always, has been a great assistance to the students at Leo. Not only has he given generously of his time to hear confessions twice a week but he also says Mass every First Friday for the stu- dents. Father Murphy, with his assistant Father Hurley, also blesses the students ' throats on St. Blaze ' s Day. But more than these services, Father Murphy is considered by everyone a good friend. VACATION WEEK An indication of a Catholic high school ' s greatness is the ever-increasing number of students who forsake all to courageously fol- low Christ ' s invitation to come after Him. Nearly sixty young men from Leo are either ordained or will be very soon. Nearly fifty graduates have chosen to wear the religious habit of Brother Edmund Ignatius Rice. This, above all, is the real test of a superior school; this is His stamp of approval; this is the blessing of God Himself. Officially Brother McCullagh and Brother Comack are the Vocation Directors for the school. Yet it is clearly understood among the staff that every Religious teacher is a Vocation recruitor. It is just this understand- ing that has fostered a Vocation conscious- ness among the Leo students. Since new schools have to be staffed in the near future in Montreal. Detroit. Rochester, Puerto Rico and Honolulu, the Brothers are increasing their prayers for larger groups in our Noviti- ates. We have the material from which Vo- cations spring; we pray that the students will be generous enough to follow through. Reverend Albert Nemith, O.F.M. Page 110 RETREATS The two retreats held annually at Leo are a definite benefit to all students. The first retreat, held during the Christmas va- cation, is for the freshmen and sophomores; the second, held during the Easter vacation, is expressly for the juniors and seniors. The purpose of the retreats is to make the stu- dents look into their lives and judge for themselves how they are measuring up to their Catholic standards. These retreats were conducted by Father A. Sullivan of St. Ann ' s Parish for the freshmen and sophomore and by Father Albert Niemeth, O.F.M. for the juniors and seniors. IN MEMORIAM On February 22. Br. Edward Leo Cobb died at the Little Company of Mary Hospital. Br. Cobb had been a religious for sixteen years. After leaving Leo at the end of his third year, Edward Cobb went to the Brothers ' Juniorate. He received the habit of the Christian Brothers ' of Ire- land in 1943 and pronounced his final vows in 195L The first years of his teaching life were spent in New York. Br. Cobb also taught in Butte, Montana; Seat- tle, Washington; Los Angeles, California; and Van- couver, British Columbia. He taught English and was interested in photography and dramatics. We wish to express our deepest sympathies to Br. Cobb ' s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Cobb. IN MEMORIAM During the month of December. Leo High School suffered the loss of one of her students, Chester Bielec of class 3B. Chester graduated from St. Michael ' s Grammar School in 1956. and he enrolled in Leo the same year. Although Chester had a heart condition which kept him from participating in sports, he was an ardent fan of all the Leo teams and had a genuine school spirit. His classmates may grow accustomed to being without him. but they will not soon forget his friendliness and sense of humor, which won him countless friends among the student body and made him a favorite with all the teachers. The death of such a beloved friend is a loss to all at Leo. We wish to extend our sincerest con- dolences and sympathies to the Bielec family. May he rest in peace. Page 111 ' i5 First row: Ed. I ORIOLE The Oriole staff of 1959 has tried to give the student body an interest- ing, informative, and informal paper. By means of its thorough coverage of the news, the Oriole has been interesting and informal. As a resuh of its Christmas edition being distributed on January 5. the Oriole has been informal indeed. However, all the editions of the newspaper were not quite that relaxed; and it was through the efforts of Br. Manning, the moderator, and Stephen Gilmour. the editor-in-chief, that the Oriole was not too in- formal. As in the past, an edition of the Oriole has been a welcome sight at Leo. It is the business of any yearbook to record by way of words and pictures the happenings of the year. Because of limitations of words, all cannot be recorded; but it is up to a few to attempt to condense two semesters of activity into a few score pages of review. These few people constitute the Lion staff. For many months, they made an attempt to produce an acceptable memory-book of the events of this year. Under the capable leadership of Br. Stoehr, and with James Henes as editor, the staff members devoted time and energy to their respective sections, alwavs keeping in mind the deadline that lies ahead. Regarding certain members of the staff, special mention must be made for their commendable work. They are Sylvester Kostrzynski. Thomas Philpott. and Ravmond Witt. Also, Br. McCullagh spent many hours identifying pictures, and Ray- mond Courney, not a member of the staff, took several of the pictures which were used in the athletic section. .loel liachor . During the month of May. The Club will enter two plays in the All-City Chicago One-Act Play Festival. In the comedy division, When Men Reduce as Women Do by Otto Ficks will be presented; and in the senior division, Sky Fodder will be our choice. Most of the help was in the fields of algebra and physics. I Another picture of the Student Aid Group is on page 47. ) Henry Forrer shows Dick Lynch and Steve Demkowski how it ' s done. DANCES The Dance Committee, under the direction of Br. Beyer, arranged four dances for the stu- dent body this year. It appeared to be twice as many because it seemed as though there was always someone with his arm around your shoulder and his hand in your pocket asking if you had your ticket for the dance yet. How- ever, no one minded this; and all the efforts of the Dance Committee were appreciated. There were the Homecoming on October 23, the Coronation Ball (formerly the Holiday Hop) on December 26, and the Spring Dance on March 30. The selection of the king and queen was changed from the Homecoming to the Coro- nation Ball; and a new method of election was started — everyone at the dance had a vote. The Senior Prom, the last dance of the year and the last dance at Leo for the seniors, will be held on May 1, at the M M Club in the Merchandise Mart. We wish to extend our thanks to Br. Beyer and the Dance Committee on be- half of everyone at Leo. (There is a picture of the entire Dance Committee on page 47.) 4f t rx SENIOR OFFICERS FOR THE BOYS Gerald Peterson, Robert Kman. Besides these performances, the club also has sung for the Leo Mothers ' Club at the Christmas Concert and for the West Park Mothers ' Club. Tlie Glee Club has been very generous with its time and talent: and all of its audiences have been very thankful for this fact. Approximately seventy representatives of the neighboring girls schools also have given unselfishly of their time and talents to assist the boys in giving the annual Spring Concert. After marching through mud and dust on football fields, they turned in fine showings on their concert schedule which consists of concerts at the various southside girl ' s schools, a concert for the Mother ' s Club and finally the big Spring Concert done in cooperation with the Glee Club. Aside from these functions the band members managed to walk off with fifty three gold medals at the Chicago Catholic Music Association Ensemble contest. We wish to congratulate Bro.
