Molloy Page 4 FORWORD It is very hard, when one is a senior, to write a prologue for this book. It is difficult since a per- son can never record all the things that he remem- bers in four years at Leo. Whether he remembers making the honor roll, or cheering at a football game, or even spending an afternoon in jug. he will always remember Leo. So it is with a fond remembrance of the good times mixed with the trying times during the four years, that we. the Senior Class of 1958. present this book. ' Que soy era Imraaculado Conception ' ' They that instruct many to justice shall shine as stars for all eternity. Daniel 12:3 FACULTY Br. T. B. Regan. Principal Dear Graduates: We have already entered an age of technology, a period of wonderful scientific development that promises still more extraordinary inventions and discoveries in the fields of Science and Medicine. We are well aware of the economic, social, and polit- ical changes caused in our lives by such advances. Dear Graduates, the future world, the future of America in particular, is in your hands. On the solid foundations of home, church, and school that you have already established, you must continue to build, to prepare yourselves to take a place in the world as educated, civic-minded, and successfully happy adults. Modern scientific thought can lure man into materialism, or into a false sense of values, or away from the pursuit of his eternal destiny. All physical laws, whether in the earth or in the universe, point to their Designer, a Supreme Being. 0 Lord, Our Lord, how wonderful is Thy name in all the earth. Thou hast proclaimed Thy glory in all the heavens. (Psalms.) Increased leisure time may present personal moral danger. One must plan the wise use of such time, always keeping God in mind. Modern military developments make us well aware that We have not here a lasting city. Pray always. Pray for a strong, living faith. Sincerely yours, Br. T. B. Regan, Principal J 3 y . However, the fond remembrances of his kindness, charity, and friendship temper to a great extent the sadness of his parting. With the news of his death, we were a little bewildered as to why this end should befall such a young man until we realized that Charles would have been the first to say Thy will be done. Charlie ' s many friends will remember him as a football and basketball star at Our Lady of Peace grammar school. Once at Leo, young Jacobsen was active in intramural basket- ball games and as an aspirant for varsity fooball honors. Perhaps his friends will rember his unextinguishable school spirit; he attended almost every football and basketball game during his four years at Leo. Death came quickly but peacefully for Jacobsen. Confined to bed after the mid-semester examinatioins by a fatal throat disease, he soon needed an oxygen tent for comfort. The end was rapidly approaching and, on February 1 1th, Charles departed from this vale of tears fortified by the Last Rites of Holy Mother Church. We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the members of the Jacobsen Family, but also we should like to say the Jacobsen ' s loss will be felt deeply here as he was a spirited member of our collective family, Leo High School. At Leo we receive one of the finest educations possible in the city of Chicago. From Freshman alegbra to Senior chemistrv. we are taught not only what is in the book, but also the practical applications of this knowledge. Page 78 BY HIS HELP Rev. Hurley giving out the ashes. One of the greatest opportunities open to the boys of Leo is the assistance which Fr. Murphv gives them. Hearing con- fession twice a week, giving counsel to anyone who wants it, making things easier for us to attend First Friday services, are only some of the things he does. No boy at Leo can be- gin to repay Fr. Murphy and his assistants for all they have done. All we can do is say, thanks. UNDER HER GUIDANCE - THE SODALITY (Sitting W. Baxtrom, J. Kozlow- ski, J. This religious organization, of which Leo is very proud, made its entrance into our life to provide a program ©f vital and apostolic Catholicism. After a period of training and preparation, Sodalists vow privately with the Blessed Virgin Mary to whom they give themselves as her servants forever, promising to rise above the level of the average catholic in the practices of their faith. Page 81 Send him to work; that hf be not idle. Ecclesiasticus 33:28 ACTIVITIES LEO ' S DADS Leo has a President Ike too, Presi- dent Ike Miller of our Leo ' s Father Club. Mr. Miller has led his organization to success. The monthly meetings are beneficial and enjoyable. Beneficial, since this gathering gives the fathers a chance to find out about their sons ' life while in school, creating a bond of common in- terest between the parent and the teach- er. These meetings are enjoyable since there is something planned for every meeting that the fathers may enjoy themselves. Whether it be some inter- esting guest or a film of interest, the fathers can be assured that the meetings will be, by no means, dull. Fathers ' Club has a great deal of business to discuss and settle as well. It has assisted several boys through Leo by its Tuition Insurance Fund. Annual occurrences, such as the An- nual Testimonial Banquet, where awards and other assistance the athletic depart- ment may need are given, and Talent Night are just a few of the multiple benefits obtained through the Fathers ' Club. To the Fathers ' Club we desire to give our best wishes and thanks for the fu- ture years. We also wish to give our congratulations to the Executive Board, the Directors and the Committee Men for their wonderful job they have done throughout the entire year. (Sitting) I. Miller. L. Patras. McSweeney, President Mrs. G. H. Hallenbeck, Vice-President Twenty-five years ago, a group of Leo Mothers met with the principal. Brother M. S. Curtis, for the purpose of organizing a Mothers ' Club. A meeting was held in the school auditorium and Mrs. P. J. Byrne was elected President. Tlie club was organized to sponsor cooperation between parents and teachers, and to interest parents in the social life of the school. This has been accomplished through various o utside activities. This year the Mothers ' Club, under its moderator. Brother Carr, and President Mrs. D. McSweeney, worked on many projects. It held two card parties: one entitled The Leo Kickoff and the other cele- brating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the club. During this party the mothers distributed gifts to the Brothers. In February, a raffle was held to finance the purchase of new formica tops for the cafeteria tables. On this silver jubilee of the Mothers ' Club, the Leo students wish to thank them for their past work, and to wish them success in the future. Mrs. E. W. Kilton, Recording Secretary Mrs. W. J. After playing a Christinas Concert for the parents, it began its tour of the girls ' high schools. Needless to say, the girls enjoyed not only the wonderful program, but also the change in scenery which the boys provided. Along with this program, the band began rehearsals for the Annual Spring Concert held on April 25 and 26. Featured in this concert were Barber of Seville by Rossini, William Tell Overture by Rossini, a medly of old time hits, and the score from Around the World in 80 Days. In addition to all this work, the boys upheld the Honor of Leo by bringing home 51 medals at the Chicago Catholic Music Association Ensemble Contest. Pat Gilhooley Ml NOW, ALL Because of the superb direction of Mr. Frank Manna, a graduate of Leo, and the moderation of Brother O ' Keefe, the Glee Club proved to be a major activity at Leo during the past year. The holy Christmas season was greatly enhanced by the timely concert given by the Glee Club in conjunction with our great Leo Band. The Glee Club also rendered a complete selection of Christmas carols at the Museum of Science and Industry. The season rounded out with the Glee Club presenting a Spring Concert. The choice of songs from the ever-popular Moss Hart ' s My Fair Lady gave each member an oppor- tunity to prove just how the best of direction, as well as a lot of hard work will result in near perfection. It seems that the longer you put the job off, the sooner you have to be done. The economics of this business are such that whenever we miss a deadline with copy or photos by a couple of days, we find the final date of delivery of copy to printer is advanced a correspondin num- ber of days. And, so far, we have missed several deadlines. As a matter of fact, with the able assistance of a surprisingly large number of seniors who lost proofs and forgot to return proofs, or forgot to show up for sittings — and forgot to remind anyone that they had forgotten — to be brutally frank about it, we missed every one of them. Some time ago, the Moderator gave up hope and announced that the yearbook would probably be delivered in September ( ' 58 I . maybe. However, the printing firm was determined not to be working all summer — August being a month for loafing — and it goaded our staff to a rather strong flurrv of work — which should end this after- noon-God willing and a couple of teachers looking the other way as we scoot back and forth for a few last items. These dances gave the Leo men a wide variety of social en- tertainment. From the opening strains of the Homecoming Dance to the closing bars of Good Night Sweetheart at the Senior Prom everyone had an enjoyable time. The dance committee gave us five dances during the year: the Homecoming Dance, the Holiday Hop. the February Frolic, the Spring Dance, and. the climax for the Seniors; the Senior Prom. No con- gratulations are necessary for the dance committee. All the thanks they need were written on the happy faces of the boys and girls who attended the dances. (Sitting) S. Hallenbeck, E. We are sure, however, that the team built around Jack Gorman, a Senior, and Richard McCarthy, a Junior, and coached by Bro. As the sound of falling pins died away, one of Leo ' s most success- ful bowling seasons came to a close. Outstanding, among the bowling stars of the season, were Raymond McCann, president of the league, and Gerald Higgins, the secretary. Under the able moderation of Mr. Reinke, our bowling team finished third in the south section of the Catholic League. The Leo bowlers were organized into sixteen leagues which bowl- ed every Thursday or Friday afternoon. At the end of the season the bowlers gathered at Mickelberry ' s Restaurant for a banquet at which the trophies were given to the top bowling teams of the season. Ray McCann, what form, what grace! This de- termination manifested itself in the form of ten wins and only three los- ses for the senior team with the sche- dule of meets only four-fifths com- pleted. These ten wins enabled Leo to capture the South Section Swimming; Crown. In addition, the Leo Swim Club conquered Mt. Carmel for the first time in ten years. Br. C. B. Irwin coach. Mr. Gibbons assistant coach, and Bill Ryan, cap- tain, supplied the spirit necessary for victory. The team was aided immeas- urably by the effort of such consis- tent winners as Ryan. Larry Smith. THE CINDERMAN Charles Dutton, Co-Captain I r. J. R. Comack, Coach Following the example of its predecessors, this year ' s track team, under the direction of Brother Comack. compiled a very impressive record. The success is chiefly attributed to super- ior depth in all events. Moreover, an early start was obtained bv practicing at the Planet, so all members were in reliable shape when they met the first Catholic league foe. Relying heavily on its few returning regulars, our senior team was greatly bolstered by many newcomers, and a number of runners up from the junior squad. Comack, Coach William Heskin, Co-Captain Resulting from the untiring efforts of Br. Co- mack, the Cross-Country teams received twenty-one medals, two championships with accompanying tro- phies, and a won-lost record of four and two in league competition. In Senior City, J. Manning, D. Hubbard, J. Mul- vaney, W. Heskin, and J. Mooney, who, in winning, set a school record of 10:45.5 for the course, ran up a score of forty points to beat five other schools, led by DePaul with forty-three. Earning medals were: J. Kane received blue ribbons for second, third, and fourth places while J. Knight and M. Komperda came in eleventh and thirteenth. In the junior finals, Leo came in fourth behind St. George. St. Ignatius, and DePaul. The top five Leo men in this race were: N. Burns: gold medal for fourth place: E. Russel, silver medal for seventh place: J. McGreal, bronze medal for eighteenth place; Sullivan, twenty-fourth; and J. Corsey, twenty-fifth place. The senior team, in beating St. George, DePaul, and St. Ignatius in the Sun-Times meet, became the first in the school ' s history to win both City and Sun-Times meets. In the Sun-Times meet, Mooney came from behind to win in 11:14.5. Following him, and also receiving gold medals, were J. Manning, fourth, and D. Hubbard, fifth. They were, in turn followed by W. Heskin, J. Mulvaney, and C. Dut- ton, receiving bronze medals for eleventh, sixteenth, and eighteenth places. In the Novice division, Leo ran away with the show by taking the five gold and a bronze medal. Joe Knight, wiinner in 12:33, was followed by E. Russel, F. Kane, J. Casey, N. Burns, and M. Kom- perda. Other members of the senior team were-R. Guzy. J. Ahaus, Kirn, and R. Flanagan; our kickers on the junior squad were Baxtron, Householder, Maloney, and Peterson. FROM START ,. The Lights, following custom, lorded over the other teams in regular competition — tak- ing eleven and losing one. Coogan Mr. Hanlon u The job given to our gridders this year was not to have a winning sea- son but to try and outdo last year ' s champs. Although our final record shows that they did not accomplish this feat, all the students must be proud of their record. With only one loss during the league season to a city-championship bound Mendel Team, our boys can boast of a near perfect record. To bal- ance this loss to Mendel, we can gloat over our mud-bowl victory with Mt. Carmel. Having made the play-offs with our strength and depth, we lost our first game to Gordon Tech. The score shows that the game was even; only a series of bad breaks gave them the one point edge. Mr. Ronan Mr. Broucek Page 123 Mr. McNulty M ll III! J W (Top Row, Left to Right) James Kavanaugh.
