,KT V,-X .. .- In the early days of the Church, the hermits and desert fathers who could not recite the psalms of the Holy Office, instead said one Our Father and Hail Mary for each psalm. At first, seeds or pebbles, later pegs stuck in boards, were used as aids in counting the one hundred Fifty prayers. About the year 1200 someone conceived the idea of stringing the heads on a cord, and these are known as Patemostersf uOur Lady's Psalterf' uRosario,u uchapeletn and Corona, in the order mentioned. Of the medieval rosaries some had ten heads, others thirty or forty, still others, sixty-three, one hundred and four, and one hundred fifty heads. By the beginning of the seventeenth century the rosary was almost com- pletely stahiiized. Today, again, the rosary is heing used with as much fervor as it ever had been in medieval Europe. The Papal Encyclical released last Octoher was responsihie for a greater intensifying of our devotion to Mary. It unites them piousiy with those ahsent and those dead. It links them more tightly in a sweet hond of love, with the most Holy Virgin, who, like a loving mother, will come among her children hestowing upon them an ahundance of the gifts of concord and family peacef,
