A---g- ONE NINE FIVE TWO PRA Y THE ROSARY Grant us that finally hatred and rivalry, the sources of discord and every sort of mishap, should calm down, and that a true, just and genuine peace should shine again upon individuals, families, peoples and nations. Pius XII ,KT V,-X .. .- In the early days of the Church, the hermits and desert fathers who could not recite the psalms of the Holy Office, instead said one Our Father and Hail Mary for each psalm. At first, seeds or pebbles, later pegs stuck in boards, were used as aids in counting the one hundred Fifty prayers. About the year 1200 someone conceived the idea of stringing the heads on a cord, and these are known as Patemostersf uOur Lady's Psalterf' uRosario,u uchapeletn and Corona, in the order mentioned. Of the medieval rosaries some had ten heads, others thirty or forty, still others, sixty-three, one hundred and four, and one hundred fifty heads. By the beginning of the seventeenth century the rosary was almost com- pletely stahiiized. Today, again, the rosary is heing used with as much fervor as it ever had been in medieval Europe. The Papal Encyclical released last Octoher was responsihie for a greater intensifying of our devotion to Mary. As the Holy Father said: H ..... the Rosary, recited in common, assembles hefore the image of the Virgin, in an admirable union of hearts, the parents and their children, who come hack from their daily worlc. It unites them piousiy with those ahsent and those dead. It links them more tightly in a sweet hond of love, with the most Holy Virgin, who, like a loving mother, will come among her children hestowing upon them an ahundance of the gifts of concord and family peacef, REV. BR. M. S. TOUHY ON ms args, Jygir T I OUR pt e to dedicate ttiis, the 1952 Lion, to Brother Michael S. Toutay as a t en of resp nd esteem on the part of the wtiote student body of treo. On Ju - 29, 19 Brottier Toutuy celebrated his Golden Jubilee as a memtner of ttie Ctiri an Bret of Ireland and thus completed Fifty years of zealous devotion tol the educati of y . Space a -' not attow a futt treatment ot Brother Tout1y's labors during att ttmose years. Cnty the Divine twaster Himself can fully catcutate the amount of good accom- ptistaed and its ricti store of merit laid up for eternity Ivy one who tias spent a lifetime in His service. During the Five years ttiat Brother Toutiy has been at Leo, he has greatly impressed us try tiis untiring devotion to duty, his readiness to oblige at att times, and his personal interest in our welfare. From now on, Leo Graduates, you must assume full responsibility for your own future, for your success or failure before God and man, for the support and security of the families you will have and for the well-lneing of the new generations to follow. To build a better world and to Find a better life is the compelling taslc that now confronts you. Your education has shown you that the greatest security of all is s iritual security, an unfailing faith in the benevolence of God. It can never he fashioned out olp slavery, injustice and corruption, for it must he founded firmly on the laws of God and dedicated wholly to the dignity of man. There is no security with- out freedomg there is no hope without oopportunityg and there is no progress without incentive. The joh ahead of you is dilticult, but it is urgent and rewarding. We, your teachers, will watch your progress eagerly, with faith in your ability to succeed, with hope for the great future you will build, with charity towards the mistalces which you, lilce all of us, will malce. SWIMMING Due largely to the tremendous effort and hard work of every memher of our swimming! teams, a re- speetahle record was estahtished. The Senior team, ted hy Captain Pete Bartu and Dieic Fisher, freestyters, split even in their ten dual meets. other standouts in the freestyle held are Neil Ketliher, Jerry O'Neitl, and Don Zeiter. Dennis Mtlr- phy and Frank Spink, our two hreaststroicers, were hard workers and could he depended upon at att times. The seniors showed a great improvement towards the end of the season which Could he noted in their late season meets. The record of the Junior team is misleading and doesnt hring out the true quality of the memhers of the team. Because of their tactic of experience, they were lost in their hrst few meets. They Finally Found themselves ted hy Captain Tom Turlier, Freestyier Jim fwaitaghan and Harold Simmons, and hreaststroiqer Tom Hvoy.
