PRAYER FOR THE HOLY YEAR 1950 Almighty and eternal God, with all our soul we thank Thee for the great gift of the Holy Year. O Heavenly Father, Who sees all, Who reads and rules the hearts of men, render them docile to the voice of Thy Son in this time of grace and salva- tion. May that Holy Year be for all a year of purification and of sanctification, interior life and reparation, a year of great return and great forgiveness. Grant to those who suffer per- secution for the Faith, Thy spirit of fortitude to bind them indis- solubly to Christ and to His Church. Protect, O Lord, Thy Son's Vicar on earth, the Bishops, priests, Religious, and faithful. Grant that all, priests and laity, young, adults and old, may form, through a firm union of intentions and affections, a solid rock against which the fury of Thy enemies will destroy itself. May Thy grace enkindle in all men love toward the great num- bers of unfortunate people whom poverty and misery has reducedyto a condition of life unworthy of human beings. Awaken in the souls of those who call Thee Father a hunger and thirst for social justice and fraternal charity, in deed and in truth. Grant, O Lord, peace to our days, peace to the father- land, peace between the nations. May the rainbow of peace and reconciliation again enfold under its bow of serene light the land which was sanctified by the life and passion of Thy Divine Son. God of all consolation! Profound is our misery, grave are our faults, numberless our needs, but greater than all is our faith in Thee. Aware of our unworthiness, we filially place our lot in Thy hands, uniting our poor prayers to the intercession and merits of the most glorious Virgin Mary and all the Saints. Grant to the sick resignation and health, to young men strength of faith, to young women purity, to fathers prosperity and sanctity of the family, to mothers efficacy in their teaching mission, to orphans affectionate protection, to refugees and prisoners a homeland, and to all Thy grace, in preparation for, and in pledge of, eternal happiness in heaven. It is in this capacity that We extend this modest token ot gratitude in recognition ot his deep interest in our religious de- velopment and Christian attitude toward education. ln View of these ettorts, We offer a sincere tribute to him for his tatherly concern tor us. So it shall be the constant prayer of the Holy Father and of his faithful children throughout the World that, in the Holy Year of l95U, Divine Mercy Will draw a deep response from the heart of mankind. To as many as accept the Savior and His teachings, will He bring peace. And if, through the mercy of God and the prayers of the faithful and the mediation of Our Blessed Mother, 1950 should prove to be the Year of Great Return and the World at large turns to the Prince of Peace, its Savior, then the World can hope to enjoy the blessings of peace. . fgllib., 3 1540, 1 K X N Y I 1 'lf' Y AA , fi' X of I ' 1J','vjff u . The army or legion of Mary, branches of which are to be found today in most Christian coun- tries, sprang up spontaneously in Dublin, lre- land, September 7th, l92l. The setting ot the first memorable meeting is reproduced in every assembly of the legionnaires wherever found: a table with a statue of our Blessed Lady standing on a White cloth and flanked by two vases with flowers, and by two Candlesticks with lighted candles. This simple setting crys- talizes everything for which The Legion stands: humble prayer in union with Mary accompan- ied by considerations, plans and discussions of how best to please God and promote His Glory in His world. d an enthusiastic Brother Tuohy has le b -1 group ot mission campaigners in an effort to M U raise funds for the missionaries in the field M afar. fel:--ff mtg, H M -fx.. The Chicago Inter-Student Catholic Action Program here at Leo, has taken seriously the words of our Holy Father: And since the priest can reach neither everybody nor everything, and as his Work is not always able to meet adequately all needs, those Who serve in the Catholic Action ranks must offer the aid of their own experience and activity. Recently We introduced a new society called the Legion oi Mary, lts purpose is to foster among us devotion to the Blessed Virgin. The presence oi the Blessed Sacrament in our school chapel also adds to our religious environ- ment. Mass is oiiered here twice daily giving us the opportunity oi benefiting in this Holy Sacrifice. Our annual retreats, first Friday devotions, and daily visits form an important part of our religious lite at Leo. -,I The students on the Library Staff are divided into two groups. The lirst group includes those boys who do the daily routine jobs of charging out books, taking back books, putting books back on the shelves, making out lists of overdue books and noti- fying the delinquents, collecting fines for overdue books, keeping the shelves in order, or taking care of the magazines. The second group consists of a num- ber ot students who for two months devoted their spare time before school, after school, or during study periods to assist the librarian in listing all the books in the library as a preparation for making a catalog. This was exacting Work as all the required information had to be copied down in the proper form so that the correct catalog cards could be or- dered, Some library science students from Rosary College assisted in this work and are making out the list of cards. In it he calls upon youth, we of Leo, to exemplify, for the preserva- tion of a well ordered and well regu- lated society, the qualities of truthful- ness, simple justice and common charity - the justice and charity we have learned through experience on the gridiron, on the basketball court, in boxing, in every competitive sport - in all activity. We, here at Leo, have been pro- vided with an extensive athletic pro- gram, the best of coaches and the best of equipment. The Lion staff, in the following pages, has endeavored to present a complete review of this past athletic season. It is one worthy to be preserved in the annals of Leo I-Iigh School. f C x.::, 1 K f '5 .553 I I 5'Iif'i I ' I -:ef 1: It I- - . . fl . rf r I I 1 ' I . The enviable record ot Leo's basketball season of l949-50 is proof oi the style of ball the Lion cagers played. The phenomenal record of the Bantams and the success of the Reserves predicted for the dopesters the strength of the Lions tor the basketball season l9'50-5l. Much credit is due to lim Arneberg tor the success ot these teams. Despite the spotted pre-season record ot the Lightweights, they, nevertheless, developed as a team of potential champions before the end ot the season. Sparkplugged by the con- sistent aggressive floor play ot the dynamic Bill Sullivan, the Lights won eleven games in twenty-one starts. The I-leavies, a strong pre-season favorite, linished third in the South Section. The stellar play of Each, Bagley, Martin and Egan during the season frequently proved to be too much tor the opposition. Injuries contributed much to the disappointing finish ot the Heavies. For a time things looked brighter for the I-leavies when Sullivan was moved up from the Lights and gave the team that necessary shot-in-the- arm . Despite Sully's brilliant floor Work, St. Pat's nosed out a 48-47 victory in the Catholic I-ligh School play-oils. Congratulations to Coach Gleason tor a job Well done. The spirit which both clubs manifested at all times was due to the untiring efforts ot the athletic director, Brother Cotter. aw mf Q I 5 Q, 4 Q V 45141 , n vw X X gf QM.,N,J , f 4 Hi 'mm MS x ...sw : -.ggi w Q5 FQ' :1: ,'5-.. up at , 4 W W FW I' -, -Q ,A ,fm Q, : f ww K f H , i 1 ww V . This ancient ritual was instituted in 1300 A. D. by Pope Boniface Vlll. The omission of the Iubilees of 1800, 1850, and 1875 Was due to political disturb- ancesy but with these exceptions the celebration has been uniformly maintained every twentysfive years from 1450 until the present time. Formerly, the door Was unwalled only once in a hundred years, but this was later reduced to fifty, and is now performed every quarter of a century. The symbolism of the cere- mony is closely connected with the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise, and it also vizualizes the opening up of a Way to the abundance of God's special mercies. In the theme l have tried to illustrate the important parts of the Iubilee Year. l have visualized the Pope in realistic fashion in the first illustration and have mounted him on a background of purely spiritual significance. The second drawing is the religious ceremony opening the Holy Year, While the third illus- trates a World at prayer under the guidance of our Holy Father. ln the fourth and last drawing which ends the theme I have again emphasized the need for prayer, for in this jubilee of jubilees the only light on a dim World can come from God.
