Among these were the Socials held by the committees appointed from the mothers ol the boys of each of the tour years of high school. The proceeds from the card parties and other socials were used to provide for the Brothers' needs both in the school and in their living quarters. The chief gift purchased by the mothers for the school this year is a statue of St. Leo with appropriate pedestal, and lor the house, a deep freeze unit. At Christmas the mothers sponsored a Christmas party and panf try shower for the Brothers. At this party each Brother was the recipient of a gilt from the Mothers' Club. At all times throughout the year, the Mothers' Club under the leadership of Mrs. Nessinger cooperated wholeheartedly with the Brothers. Members of Mothers' Club made the costumes for the operetta. if d: Mrs. Arnold Mercia. Mrs. Robert Kenny. The Iunior Glee Club, made up ot some 7U freshmen and sophomores, has shown remarkable development and unusual versatility. lts repertoire included selections of almost every type ot vocal Work suited to boys' voices. The members ot the club seem to have a preference tor Palestrina and Fred Waring. Twelve members ot the club, because of the calibre of their voices and their facility to learn parts, were selected to augment the senior choir at the operetta. The club has sung with great success at The Museum ot Science and lndustry Christmas Festival , at several meetings ot the Mothers' and the Fathers' Clubs and at the Commencement Exercises in the Capitol Theatre. Iohn Coghlan was the club's soloist again this year. IUNIOR GLEE CLUB Front Row: T. Murphy. R. Ivory. C. Peitsch. D. Kenny. D. Mulligan. I. Hagan, A. Le Duc, B. Van Etten. G. Daily. A., . - . 7gl w ki 17 ATX N .l n The Leo Lions started their season with only one regular from last year's great team, Angelo Prassa. The team made up for its inexperience by spirit and aggressiveness as all its op- ponents can testify. The record speaks for itself: seven wins and three losses. Other teams would be proud of this record but anything less than a championship is a disappointment to Leo. Here is a review of the season game by game. LEO 39-ST. GEORGE 0 The 1948 Leo Lions opened their practice season with an impressive 39-U VICTORY over a highly voted St. George eleven. Following a score- less opening period, a Costello to Bob Smith pass netted 35 yards for 6 points. Two minutes later, Whitey Wage raced 81 yards with a punt return, Sheehan adding the point to make it 13-U. The halftime score was I9-O as a result of Smith's second touchdown, a 2-yard plunge. LEO 18-ST. IGNATIUS 13 Two last period touchdowns by Gus Marfise gave the Lions a 5-point victory over St. Ignatius. The North Section team scored first when a lineman raced 93 yards with a mid-air fumble. Prassa's 7-yard off tackle spurt tied for the count, but St. Ignatius took a third quarter lead on Dronin's 43-yard end run. The point was good. Then Marfise put Leo within a point of the lead on a 3-yard spurt and gave the Lions the ball- game on a 43-yard pass from Costello. LIONS WHIP DUNBAR 33-6 Leo climaxed their practice season with a 33-6 triumph over Dunbar. Costello connected on 3 touchdown tosses of 18, 33 and 37 yards to Welch, O'Neill and Bob Martin respectively. Off tackle plays netted the other two touchdowns with Coyle and Krans countering, on 3 and 5 yards distance. Coyle kicked the extra point on 3 occasions. The Central Section eleven scored on the recovery of a fumble. LEO 26-DE LA SALLE 0 Whitey Wage gave Leo a lead which they never relinquished when he returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for 6 points. Prassa scored his first of Z touchdowns on a 2-yard plunge in the second period. Smith put the Lions out in front by 19 points when he sprinted 67 yards to pay dirt in the third quarter. Prassa padded the victory margin with a l-yard spurt in the final minutes. Coyle added 2 conversions. LEO 12-MT. CARMEL 13 The Mt. Carmel Caravan eked out their first victory over a Leo team in a decade by the score of l3-l2. Carmel drew first blood on ENE 3l-yard touchdown marker. The Lions knotted the score at 6 apiece, on Bob Smith's 6-yard counter. The Caravan's second touchdown came on Gibbons' 31-yard scoring pass to Bernie. Mischevitz kicked what proved to be the winning point. The Orange and Black came back on Coyle's l-yard touchdown marker, but missed the vital conversion. LEO BEATS ELIZABETH 25-6 Bouncing back from the Carmel defeat, the Orange and Black soundly trounced St. Elizabeth 25-6, Bob Smith scored 3 times on runs of 3, I8 and Z9 yards. Tom Donahue notched the other touchdown on a 20-yard pass from Pat Costello. LEO 26-WEBER 12 - Bob Smith, Ed Coyle, Angelo Prassa and the entire Leo eleven hit their peak against a slightly favored Weber team. Bob Smith added 3 more touchdowns to his collection. Smitty's scores came on excursions of IU and 42 yard distances, and a 75-yard overall pass play from Costello. Prassa pounded over for a touchdown from 5 yards out. DE PAUL 26-LEO 6 The new South Section Champs administered a Z6 to 6 shellacking to the retiring champs in a well played ball game. De Paul, paced by their great half back Gene Chess, completely foiled the Lions in every depart- ment to win. Chess tallied on off tackle spurts of 7 and 8 yards on a 57-yard end run, and still a fourth with a 91-yard pass interception, Schaffer added 2 extra points. Bob Smith registered Leo's only score on an I8-yard end run. LEO 20-ST. RITA 12 Leo finished third in the South Section as the result of their 20-I2 victory over St. Rita's Mustangs. Coyle began the scoring activities by circling his own left end for 31 yards and 6 points. He also added the extra point. During the second half, pitching Pat Costello unleashed 2 touchdown passes. The first covered 67 yards to Bob Smith, Coyle converting, and the second traveled 55 yards to Whitey Wage racing over. LIONS CLAW CALUMET 19-12 In their first post-season encounter the Lions wacked past Calumet, I9 to 12, in the Mud Bowl . Whitey Wage tallied 2 touchdowns on runs of 9 and 36 yards. Bob Smith went over once from 8 yards out, and Angelo Prassa swam for one extra point. Calumet countered on touch- down offerings of 8 and 9 yards. LEO 12-TILDEN 19 The Blue Devils of Tilden ecked out a I9 to I2 verdict over the injury riddled Leo Lions in the l948 football final on November 24. Prassa, of the Orange and Black drove for a score midway through the quarter. The running combination of Martin and Prassa set up the tying touchdown in the final stages. THE 1948-49 BASKETBALL SEASON THE HEAVIE The Leo Heavies went farther during the 1948-49 campaign than even some of their staunchest supporters figured they would. ln spite of their inexperience and lack of height, plus the loss of their star, Iohn Farrell, Leo's hard fighting Seniors weren't beaten in the playoffs until the final round. They wound up second best to a veteran St. Patrick five, and truly deserve great praise for their stellar showing this season. The Orange and Black came up the hard way this season and here's how they did it. Chicago Vocational, St. Mel, Loyola, St. George and Morgan Park, all were beaten in order by the Lions in the first five practice tilts. ln a rematch with St. George the Dragons snapped their five game winning streak. The St. George Tournament provided up- sets galore and Leo was one of these. After taking an early decision over St. Michaels, the Heavies were beaten by a fighting Fenwick five in a quarter final contest. Bob Martin's 13 points paced the losing cause of the Lions. The Orange and Black absorbed two more losses at the hands of Fenger and St. lgnatius before the League season got underway. Bob Martin's 19 points helped the Heavies beat Weber in the League's opening contest. The entire starting five ganged up on the Meteors from De La Salle in the first round's second game. Don Griffin, Tom Hill and Bob Martin each contributed 12 points to the victory, while Bob Collins and Marty McGrath threw in ll points each. De Paul handed the Lions their first League loss the following week on the Blue Demons home floor. Tom Hill coun- tered l5 points for Leo's losing fight. As it turned out, the loss to De Paul was the worst the Lions suffered during the sason. St. Elizabeth scored a six point victory over the Heavies in their next encounter. Marty McGrath tallied 12 points for the losers and played an outstanding ball game. During the first week in February, the Orange and Black split two contests. Tom Hill's 15 points paced their victory over Rita, while, Bob Martin's 12 point contribution just wasn't enough to prevent the Lions from dropping a two point decision to Carmel. ln the initial game of the second round Leo conquered Weber's Red Horde. Twelve points 1102i by Bob Martin was the big factor in the victory. Once again, Martin led the scoring parade, when Leo trounced Rita's Mustangs, our tall center registering 17 points. The Lions added still another victory by whipping De La Salle on the latter's home floor. That night the Leo defense hit its peak, limiting the Meteors to three field goals for the evening. By conquering De Paul and St. Elizabeth within three nights of each other, the Orange and Black served notice on Carmel that the second round finale would be as tough as the first. The second Leo-Carmel clash was a tough one-a tough one for the Lions to lose. lt was a thriller from the start to the final whistle with Carmel coming out on top by only three points. Marty McGrath, Tom Hill and Bob Martin, effectively supported by the masterly floor play of Captain Bob Collins, combined to give Leo the scoring punch in the second round to catapult the Lions into the playoffs with an 8 to 4 won and lost record in league play. lt was in the playoffs that the Heavyweight quintet came into their own. Although they trailed St. Philip in their quarter final contest, the Lions came up fast to pour it on against Philip and win by 19 points. Again Bob Martin led the Leo scorers with 13 points. The Lions played their most spirited contest of the year against Carmel and came out a two point victor in the League's semi- final round. Marty McGrath paced the inspired victory by tallying 13 points to lead the attack on the Caravans. Coach Ioe Gleason deserves a consider- able amount of praise for the way he kept the Heavies in contention until the Catholic League's final game. The players themselves deserve mention as a hard fighting team, and certainly the work of Brother Murphy, Brother O'Keefe and Brother Barry is worthy of recog- nition. To everyone connected with the 1948- 49 Heavies we, the student body, say Thanks for a very successful season. Here is how the experts rate them. Marty McGrath, first team, Section, second team, All- Catholicg honorable mention, All-City. Bob Martin, second team, Sectiong second team, All- Catholic, honorable mention, All-City. Bob Collins, honorable mention, Section. Don Grif- fin, honorable mention, Section. THE 1948-49 BA KETBALL SEASON THE LIGHT Leo's Little Lions climaxed their victori- ous season with a great conquest of Lane Tech to take their second straight City Title. Thus the Lights completed their campaign with a won-lost record of 25 and 2. Coach loe Gleason's junior quintet opened the practice season with a win over Chicago Vocational's highly rated five. The two time City Champs then took five more preliminary contests from St. Mel, Loyola, Morgan Park, and St. George. Because of their early form, the Lights were top heavy favorites to annex their second straight Fenwick crown. The Orange and Black lined up to their role as favorites in their rout of St. Michael's. Next victim to enter the Lion's den was Carmel, and the Caravan was walloped. The win over Carmel put Leo against St. Rita in the semi-finals and once again they were victorious. However, Holy Trinity spoiled their attempt for two successive Fenwick titles by edging the Lions 48 to 45 in the final round of the tournament. Actually, the Lights as a team, were beaten previously when the second string was knocked off by Fenger a week be- fore the Tourney. A 63-33 victory over St. lg- natius ended the Lights' practice schedule. lim Lamkin's l'5 points paced the Lights in their 62-31 victorious league opener against Weber. A week later, Lamkin's 16 markers paved the way for their 63-43 win over De La Salle. Happy and Chuck Sheehan regis- tered 13 and 12 points respectively as the Lights trounced De Paul. Leo ran up their biggest offensive score in history against St. Elizabeth's hapless lronmen in their fourth league contest. Sheehan's 17 points paced the long list of scorers in the 110- 32 runaway. Four days later, it took lim Kane's last second free throws to save the Lion's win- ning streak against St. Rita. Lamkin led Leo to a close decision over the Mustangs. Leo's veteran quintet ended their first round with a smashing rout of Carmel, Sheehan making 21 points. Sheehan again was the Orange and Black's spark plug in their next clash with Weber. His 20 points paced the victory over the Red Horde. The following week, the Lights lost their star, lim Lamkin, who was stricken with appendicitis. However, Lamkin's loss didn't seem to bother them too much because ten days and three games later the Lights had captured their fifth straight Section crown. Sheehan's 20 points sparked a conquest of the Meteors. Little Ioe Heilmann's 14-point output paced the Lion's spirited victory over Rita. The De Paul game provided Leo with the oppor- tunity to win the Section title, and win it they did by a 47-41 margin. Ioe Heilmann's l7 points in the first 16 min- utes helped the Champs to whip St. Elizabeth by a 77-26 margin three days later. The Lights ended their League campaign with a win over Carmel. Leo entered the final round of the playoffs by trouncing Rita for the fourth straight time. Terry O'Donnell's 12 points sparked the victory. The veteran scoring duo of Sheehan and Lam- kin helped to bring home the second straight Catholic Championship. Sheehan netted 15 points, while Happy , playing his first game in five weeks threw in 13. Thus the endless Work of Brother Finch, who molded one of the best lightweight teams ever assembled, and of Mr. Gleason who adhered to the Finch foundation and did a truly magnificent job, and of the players themselves, who turned in worthy per- formances, has paid off in another Champion- ship for Leo, the home of the Lions. lim Lamkin and Chuck Sheehan were given All-Catholic and All-City first team berths for the Iuniors. lim Kane was given All-Catholic honors. Bill Spelz, Ioe Heilmann and Dave Donegan were given honorable mention for All-Catholic. Leo's Little Lions climaxed their 27 game schedule with a smashing 47-33 conquest of Lane Tech to retain their City Crown. lt was the sixteenth straight victory for the Orange and Black and their twenty-fifth win in 27 starts this season. Happy Lamkin played one of the best games of his career as he poured 22 points through the nets to pace the winners to an easy victory. The rebound Work of Terry O'Don- nell and Ioe Heilmann helped control the back- boards for Leo. Although the Lights trailed by an 8 to 5 count at the quarter, they bounded back to hold a 22 to 16 margin at the intermission. Chuck Sheehan's floor play and the excellent guard- ing job done by Bill Spelz greatly aided the Champs' cause. 4103! Craven, Francis ...,,... ST DE Adams, Iohn D. .... . Adducci, Edward I. ,.... .
