During 'he four years at Leo the well of English literature is explored from Shakes- peare to Monsignor Sheen. Besides the reg- ular class periods the cultivation of the lan- guage is encouraged in such noteworthy events as the annual oratorical contest and the school play. The Lion would like fo congratulate this department on a job well done. Kev. Er. G. F. Wakeham, Rev. Br. j. V. Birmingham, Mr. F. lenks, Rev. Br. T. P. Treacy. ' v Rev. Br. C. A. Murphy, Rev. Br. l. These men pictured to the left have the stu- dents here El-mundo- espaniolingu and Om- nia-Callia-eratingn up and down the corridors of gooj old L.l-l.S. The students are required to take Latin for the first two years and may con- tinue for all four. Span- ish classes are offered in the final two years and the enrollment is high there. The Editors of the Lion, who have troub'e understanding English, marvel at and congratulate these men. Mathe- mrrlirrs Algebra, Trig, Geome- tries, plain and fancy, each one is offered to the Leo student. All are required to take Ele- mentary Algebra and Plane Geometry. After that the Leo student is offered a choice of mathematical subjects as broad as any school in the land. Outside the regular formalized course of Math, in- struction is given in Mechanical Drawing. We here at Leo are especially proud of our mathematical faculty and congratula'e them for their splendid work. Rev. Br. F. R. Finch, Rev. Br. l. B. O'Keefe, Rev. Br. I. B. Walsh, Rev. Br. P. lvl. Coming from a family of noted cians, Miss Rehberg has a keen knowledge usic and particularly of choral music. Her ss here at Leo is due, in part, to her y to select vocal numbers suited to the register and capabilities of our choral club and her the Leo is very fortunate, untiring efforts to produce the best that boys can give. indeed, in having Professor Guido Mattei in charge of its condgert band. He is a most competent band organizer and instrucl 'or, and one of the best authorities on all matters musical in the Chicago area. Leo stresses the highest in scholastic endeavor professional teaching , sturdiness in athletics, and, through the of Professor Mattei, the best in musical 1945 On that fateful September morn in l944 several hundred nervous grammar school graduates were introduced formally to Leo High School. After many trying weeks of getting lost, forgetting locker combinations and gawking at the impres- sive major letters toted about by the foot- ball squad, the Class of '48 settled down and became a part of Leo. This year marked the entrance of loe Gleason on the football and basketball horizons and Red promptly showed his 'prowess by guiding the football team through the season with only one loss and supervis- ing the Heavyweight Basketeers to the South Section crown and within two points of the Catholic title, The Light- weights under the direc'ion of Brother Finch edged-by St. Philip to win the Catholic title when Bucko lVlcCinnis sunk one with only seconds remaining to win by one point. The Lights went on to trample powerful Marshall in the S'adium 34-26. 1946 Sophomores nowl lt's our turn to laugh at the Bennies and did we enjoy it. Cap- tain Deane Thomas of the football team was elected to the State Sqaud, The Lights edged-by Weber in the Fenwick tournament to win the pre-season crown 42-38. The Heavies' try for pre-season acclaim was stifled by St, Patrick 39-34 but everyone talked for weeks about tlce six baskets which Ed Perry sank in the last minu'e and a half to lead a belated Leo rally. The basketball teams fared well during the regular season but were eliminated in the playoffs. The retreat this year was preached by the Rev. Hugh Calkins and was one of the most inspir- ing ever held. Room Zl-l took the inter- mural baske'ball championship in a wild- ly contested game in which such well known luminaries as Ray Caolis and Frank lVlcC-uire of ZH battled Dunn and Blacke lnc. of ZB. Kozlowski lets one go as Moskal l3l and Flaher- ty l9l look on, The Lights went on to the City Championship in this year, l945. lass Histor Three cheers! juniors at last. Our chests were fairly bursting with pride at being upperclassmen, at least until the first re- port cards came out. The Larrupin' Lions breezed through the football section until the rains and St. Rita showed up. Dan Henry was the peepuls cherce as he ran circles around opposing tacklers. The Heavies dropped a bad game to DeLaSaIle but rallied their forces and went on to whip everything in the league as they garnered the Catholic title. The tears flowed freely as the Lights somehow lost to Holy Trinity in the playoffs. lake Fendley and crew buzzed over our po'r little boys down at the Stadium but every one was mighty proud of the game-fight our team made against the best the Pub- lic league produced in years. The first articles of the sports pages of the Oriole this year predicted great things for the Leo squads in basketball, football and track. The football team mashed every team in the South Section and went on to run over Loyola for the Catholic championship. The following Saturday 30,000 hysterical fans sat around in the snow only to come home disappointed as the Lions failed on both extra points to lose to Austin l3 to 12. The basketball season came along with a bang as the Lights slammed through for the Fenwick trophy in December. The 'powerhouse Leo teams kept going right into the playoffs as both Seniors and juniors picked off the Section title. The Heavies didn't fare so well in the play- offs and were eliminated by that slim margin of one point. The Lights went on and gave to their departing coach, Br. F. R. Finch, the best that coufd be had a city championship. 7fze GMM I M'I o fi uoN WZ ' ' Qu I.-1948 J L-?aak3 Za. 5 an E4 Q any isis Ninn lHes1-Q Q4 ws will A ss. 459' mQ..a M N Ax 'N 'N K 'N- R. a . n 'W f I Q .V VW M' 2 1 . ii X if A ' , Q 1 , .1 Keri V .wriiz I .. Costello Br. L. A. Fellows The Leo Fathers' Club, under the leadership of their dynamic president, Edward L. McQuaid, has completed a most highly suc- cessful season. The chief work of the Club has been the promotion of extra school events. The annual football and basketball banquets, honoring the Leo athletic squads, were again sponsored by the Fathers. This year, too, they were responsible for promoting the Oratorical Con- tests. In mentioning Oratorical contests we might say that the winner of the Senior encounter will be awarded the Monsignor Shewbridge Scholarship of 5150, The junior, Sophomore and Freshman students who secure first place in each of their contests will be the re- cipients of gold medals given in memory of Reverend Brothers, Curtis, Crangel and Hamil who labored for many years here at Leo and have now gone to their eternal rest. The members of the Fathers' Club hold their general meetings once every month in the school auditorium. They mixed ingenuity and industry to make the meetings both varied and appealing. Their efforts were rewarded by splendid turnouts of fathers and sons at all of those meetings. The Editors of the '48 LION wish to extend both their thanks and congratulations to Brother Fellows and the officers of the Fathers' Club for their outstanding work during the past year. Mrs. l. E. Duffy President i Sophdmores, Freshmen and the members of the Faculty are due to the Leo'slMothers' Club, one of the finest organizations of Catholic women in the city of Chicago. As a result of the many social activities held during the year, many heavyl financial burdens have been lifted. Apart from this material aid the ntiothers give us their moral support in our cultural and athletic en- deav rs. , herefore, it is with pride that the LION staff salutes the president of the Leo Mothers' Club, Mrs. Duffy and the officers and members of this active unit at Leo. he undying thanks ofthe graduates of the class of I948, the juniors, l Mrs. C. Nothing is more 'pleasing to the ear than the rhythmical blend of boys' voices raised in harmoni- ous song. This expresses the opinion of the listeners of the Leo Glee Club. Under the direction of Miss Esther Rehberg, and the management of Rev. Br. C. A. Murphy, the Choral group has reached a high pinnacle in musical interpretation. One of the highlights of the club's season was its appearance in the Tenth Annual Spring Con- cert. Their 'program included choice selections of sacred, semi-classical and popular numbers from a large repertoire. Another outstanding occasion for them was the Dramatic Club's pres- ' entation at which they added colorful varietv to a gala evening of entertainment. To show their versatility, they were called upon to per- form as part of the Graduation Exercises, adding to the solemnity of the day. Each page layout must be taken in careful consideration and ar- rangements made with the photographer to take class pictures, action shots of athletic events, activities, etc. This year the LION was under the able and competent guidance of Rev. Br, C-. C. Hearn. The excellent photographs appearing in the LION were the superior quality of Root Studios whose promptness and dependa- bility are most sincerely appreciated. The engraving work for the Yearbook was capably handled by the Pontiac Engraving and Electro-type Companyg the tremen- dous task of printing and publishing the book goes to the Clarke- McElroy Publishing Company. The Ciscans at their weekly meetings on Saturday mornings throughout the school year, engage in the active debating of Christian principles as applied to modern-day life. Recently the topic of the discussions was the Beatitudes which might well be copied by all who sincerely aspire to the making of a better world. The group is under the competent direction of Rev. Fr. Carabine S.l. When the Ciscans are confronted with a dif- ficulty in the deeper aspects of theology and philosophy Fr. Carabine willingly points out the way to more accurate and logical conclusions. Here at Leo Rev. Br, M. O. O'l-lehir has for many years worked diligently to promote interest in this noble organiza- tion. The Ciscans are quietly but efficiently preparing for that great tomorrow when an enduring peace will be built by those young men and women who are well prepared to spread the Faith and who envision Christ as the Eternal King. As the Lions trudged dejectedly toward the locker room, the Leo fans rose up and gave them a well earned cheer. The Lions had given everything they had, and had dropped a heart- breaking game by one point to a highly favored eleven. The Catholic Champs completely outplayed the Tigers during the initial period. Early in the second quarter, the Orange and Black began a 43 yard march. A crowd of 30,000 saw Leo pound continually through Austin's line, until Tom Blake struggled over from the 2 yard line, to give the Lions a 6 to O half- time lead. ln the opening seconds of the third period, Bill l-leiland's team struck with lightening-like speed. After Vukelich returned the kickoff 25 yards to the Austin 48, Rylowicz broke away for a 52 yard touchdown to tie the count. Thereafter the vaunted Austin offense was stopped cold by the mighty Leo line. Time after time, the Lions stopped the Tigers both on the ground and in the air. Midway through the final quarter, Gerry Tourville attempted to punt from the Leo l5 yard line. An Austin lineman blocked it, and the Tigers took over on the ll yard line. Three plays later, Rylowicz was standing in the Leo end zone with his second touchdown. Anderson then placed the all-irnportant extra point directly through the uprights. The never-say-die Lions came roaring back following the kickoff. jerry Carden, who didn't miss his receivers all day, tossed a 27 yard pass to McGuire, and Frank raced another '58 yards to put the Lions only one point behind. A running play for the point left Leo 2 inches and one point shy of a tie for the championship. co-captains of Leo and Austin receive football from Mayor Martin H. Kennelly. Brother Finch possessed that power in a very high degree. Whether in the mathe- lriatics class or on the basketball court, his influence for good charged the atmosphere. I Brother Finch believed that to enable a pupil to give his best mentally it was absolutely essential that he should partake in plenty of physical exercises. The tide bf victory that has come to Leo in recent years is, in reat measure, attributable to his training, His reserve asketball teams won thirty and lost none.
