THE LION E PRESENT the record of the school year, i946-l947. We have en- deavored to crystallize into this volume the Leo school spirit, expressed through the medium of pictures, statistics, and editorials. lvlay we bespeak a favorable reception of our efforts from parents, friends, and admirers. The s'udents of Leo are shown at work and at play. School work today is a vital thing. lt is a measure of tomorrow's peace, and play is one index of the free spirit upon which our democratic faith is founded. We found the editing of the annual an exciting and pleasurable task. The compilation of the dummy taxed our ingenuity, The designing of album pages, panel pages, and layouts as well as the arrangement of copy was a rich school of experience. We obtained valuable insight into business methods from our contact with printer, photographer, engraver, and cover maker. We hope that this pictorial treatment of our final year at Leo may tend to preserve the spirit of free education upon which our democracy so largely depends. The high quality pictures in the annual are the product of the Root Studio, 185 North Wabash Avenue. We do not know which to admire the more-- the courtesy with which we were treated or the promptness with which the service work was executed.

The Catholic School St. Luke, the evangelist, referring to the boy- hood of Christ, wrote in his gospel, And Jesus advanced in wisdom, and age, and grace with Cod and men. To advance thus is the purpose of the catholic school. It is the fourfold development of man- advancing in wisdom, or mental development' advancing in age, or physical development, advancing in grace with God, or spiritual development, and advancing with men, or social development. It is this philosophy that the founder of Leo High School wished to promul- gate when he undertook the construction of a catholic school. Faith alone im- presses on the catholic the need for such an undertaking. Reason alone could never give the unbeliever any concept of the promise that revelation brings to the christian, nor could it bring a conscious realization of the life to be lived here and now. It is only in the catholic school one learns the depths of degradation to which he falls. and the heights of sanctity to which he climbs-the doctrine of original sin on the one hand, and that of divine grace on the other, being the solution of these mysteries. lf revelation did not give us the mystery most removed from our knowledge, that of original sing we could never hope to know ourselves, and although nothing shocks us so rudely as this mystery, without it we would be incomprehensible to ourselves, The courses in Leo High School are designed to give its students an elementary knowl- edge of the teachings of the Church, embracing the creed, the commandments, the sacra- ments, and prayer, Armed with this knowledge, the first Leo graduates of the atomic age need not fear the crisis of civilization precipitated by the release of atomic energy. The un- believer may dread a calamity as destructive as the deluge of old, the rulers of the world may gather feverishly round conference tables to discover means of controlling the monster that science has happened upon, but the catholic school can give them the answer-the only power than can keep man from misusing his new knowledge of ihe laws of nature, is the application to his own conduct of the laws of Cod. 1
