C Raymond E, lvlulhern '44 TO LEO'S GOLD STAR ALUMNI Some men gain fame by works of charity and mercy. others by the accumulation of wealth. Some gain it by the attainment of power, others by the superb development of their C-od-given talents. The young men to whom this book is dedicated have gained fame by an act set apart from all the above accomplishments-the sacrifice, not of the comforts of life or the means of life, but of life itself. Some men attain fame only after years of effort with many wearisome hours of planning and in spite of many setbacks. These thirty three lads have gained it by a sudden, dazzling flash of supreme heroism. Some secure a place in history by treachery and deceit, by dissimulation, hypocrisy and cupidity. These heroes have an abiding place in all our hearts by the noble and straightforward expending of that they prized most dear. This book is dedicated also to the parents and families of these boys- to those who loved and appreciated them most. Their sense of loss is no less real because their loved one died in the noblest of causes. They carry the sword of grief within-a pain which all the world's medical science can- not alleviate. However, it is within the power of us all to assuage this cruel hurt with the spiritual ointment of prayer and the transcending balm of sympathy. Do not feel that he is gone without trace from a heedless world. Come and stand in the corridors of Leo, look into the classrooms, enter the gym or the cafeteria-what you see in the faces of the boys is a reflection of the spirit and tradition that he has left behind in Leo. That earnest frown when called upon to recite-that happy, fervent laugh, quick to seize upon any humorous situation-that quiet but determined attitude toward studies and games-all these were HIS, and he has left them as a precious heritage to Leo. His personality is an ingredient of the character of Leo. Look for it fifty years hence and it will still be here. ml in rlrlinli Lt Thomas Lt. John Sgt. Patrick Sgt. John B. Pfc.
