From The EDITOR' I ES C The future of Christian civiliza- tion, and of the democratic way of life, incidentally, is entirely de- pendent upon the wide dissemina- tion of Catholic education. Ac- cordingly, religion is brought to the fore at Leo and stressed throughout the school year. The year commenced with a Mass of the Holy Ghost. On Sep- tember 25 the school marked the centen:l'y of the death of Edmund Rice, founder of the Christian Brothers of Ireland, with Mass and general Holy Communion. In November Monsignor Shew- bridge, Leo's founder, enrolled the freshmen in the Knights of the Blessed Sacrament. a group of which every Leo student is a member. The first Friday of each month saw the entire student body gather in the school chapel for devotions to the Sacred Heart, In January was conducted the most important spiritual activity of the year, the annual retreat. In Ivlay there appeared in each classroom a May altar, symbolizing the de- votion the entire school holds for the Blessed Virgin. Also during May one week was set aside as Vocation Week, during which the students were encouraged, with talks and meditations, to give serious thought to the subject of their futures. One period each day is set aside for the study of religion. During this period the brother be- comes acquainted with his stu- dents intimately, and strives, by stimulating discussion, by instruc- tion, and by example, to instil higher ideals and sound religious basis for living life fully. Thus, through four years of high school life at Leo, the Cath- olic young man receives a corn- prehensive knowledge of his reli- gion-a knowledge that will aid him immeasurably in attaining the end for which he was created, namely, entering heaven. Rvliginn LEO HIGH SCHOOL CHICAGO, ILL. I945 LEO MARKS CENTENARY OF DEATH OF ORDER'S FOUNDER Day Observed by General Communion On August 29, IS44, Edmund lg- natius Rice died and thus ended a life marked by an uphill struggle for Catholic education. To commemorate the centenary of his death, special services were held in the Leo chapel on September 25. The entire student body assembled in the chapel to assist at High Mass celebrated by Monsignor Shewbridge. After a general Holy Communion, Father Robert Devaney, a Leo grad- uate of I93l, and at present a curate in Nativity parish, sketched the life work of Brother Rice. The students were given the remainder of the day as a holiday. Fr. Robert Devaney LEO ALUMNUS GIVES CENTENARY SERMON In his sermon Father Devaney told of the lack of religious instruction in the English controlled schools, and recounted Brother Rice's early diffi- culties, and then of the great vigor with which his ideals spread until his theories of education encompassed the world. EDMUND IGNATIUS RICE BENEFACTOR OF YOUTH The first centenary of the death of Edmund Ignatius Rice was an occasion which called for world-wide recognition, for the work which this great man initiated has developed to an unprece- dented degree. Brother Rice was the first to tackle seriously the problem of educa- tion of boys when the penal system in Ireland was coming to an end, and his heroic efforts in that cause have resulted in covering the earth with a network of efficient schools for Catholic young men. Faced with innumerable discouraging obstacles from the start, Brother Rice nevertheless labored tirelessly, and soon his efforts began to show results. The idea spread slowly at first, and then with increasing rapidity new schools sprang up steadily, first in Ireland, then in England and thence over the whole earth. Since the death of Edmund Rice, his order has constantly spread, ever cherishing his ideals, yet ever adapting itself to the changing tempo of the times. It cannot help but contribute powerfully to that Christianization of the world which is so widely accepted today as the solution to the world's chaotic condition.

Mc- Cartin, O.M.l., on January 9, IO, and ll. The edifying, almost monastic silence that reigned throughout the halls of Leo during those three days of grace was eloquent testimony to the unction and inspiration of the retreat master's sermons.
