WALSH AND ART DAMPTS C Raymond E, lvlulhern '44 TO LEO'S GOLD STAR ALUMNI Some men gain fame by works of charity and mercy. others by the accumulation of wealth. Some gain it by the attainment of power, others by the superb development of their C-od-given talents. The young men to whom this book is dedicated have gained fame by an act set apart from all the above accomplishments-the sacrifice, not of the comforts of life or the means of life, but of life itself. Some men attain fame only after years of effort with many wearisome hours of planning and in spite of many setbacks. These thirty three lads have gained it by a sudden, dazzling flash of supreme heroism. Some secure a place in history by treachery and deceit, by dissimulation, hypocrisy and cupidity. These heroes have an abiding place in all our hearts by the noble and straightforward expending of that they prized most dear. This book is dedicated also to the parents and families of these boys- to those who loved and appreciated them most. Their sense of loss is no less real because their loved one died in the noblest of causes. They carry the sword of grief within-a pain which all the world's medical science can- not alleviate. However, it is within the power of us all to assuage this cruel hurt with the spiritual ointment of prayer and the transcending balm of sympathy. Do not feel that he is gone without trace from a heedless world. Come and stand in the corridors of Leo, look into the classrooms, enter the gym or the cafeteria-what you see in the faces of the boys is a reflection of the spirit and tradition that he has left behind in Leo. That earnest frown when called upon to recite-that happy, fervent laugh, quick to seize upon any humorous situation-that quiet but determined attitude toward studies and games-all these were HIS, and he has left them as a precious heritage to Leo. His personality is an ingredient of the character of Leo. Look for it fifty years hence and it will still be here. ml in rlrlinli Lt Thomas Lt. John Sgt. Patrick Sgt. John B. Pfc. STRITCH, D.D Archbishop of Chicago VERY REV. MSGR. P. F. SHEWBRIDGE Founder of Leo High School REV. BR. PATRICK D. MCCARTHY, Ph.D Principal of Leo High School 1 From The EDITOR' I ES C The future of Christian civiliza- tion, and of the democratic way of life, incidentally, is entirely de- pendent upon the wide dissemina- tion of Catholic education. Ac- cordingly, religion is brought to the fore at Leo and stressed throughout the school year. The year commenced with a Mass of the Holy Ghost. On Sep- tember 25 the school marked the centen:l'y of the death of Edmund Rice, founder of the Christian Brothers of Ireland, with Mass and general Holy Communion. In November Monsignor Shew- bridge, Leo's founder, enrolled the freshmen in the Knights of the Blessed Sacrament. a group of which every Leo student is a member. The first Friday of each month saw the entire student body gather in the school chapel for devotions to the Sacred Heart, In January was conducted the most important spiritual activity of the year, the annual retreat. In Ivlay there appeared in each classroom a May altar, symbolizing the de- votion the entire school holds for the Blessed Virgin. Also during May one week was set aside as Vocation Week, during which the students were encouraged, with talks and meditations, to give serious thought to the subject of their futures. One period each day is set aside for the study of religion. During this period the brother be- comes acquainted with his stu- dents intimately, and strives, by stimulating discussion, by instruc- tion, and by example, to instil higher ideals and sound religious basis for living life fully. Thus, through four years of high school life at Leo, the Cath- olic young man receives a corn- prehensive knowledge of his reli- gion-a knowledge that will aid him immeasurably in attaining the end for which he was created, namely, entering heaven. Rvliginn LEO HIGH SCHOOL CHICAGO, ILL. I945 LEO MARKS CENTENARY OF DEATH OF ORDER'S FOUNDER Day Observed by General Communion On August 29, IS44, Edmund lg- natius Rice died and thus ended a life marked by an uphill struggle for Catholic education. To commemorate the centenary of his death, special services were held in the Leo chapel on September 25. The entire student body assembled in the chapel to assist at High Mass celebrated by Monsignor Shewbridge. After a general Holy Communion, Father Robert Devaney, a Leo grad- uate of I93l, and at present a curate in Nativity parish, sketched the life work of Brother Rice. The students were given the remainder of the day as a holiday. Fr. Robert Devaney LEO ALUMNUS GIVES CENTENARY SERMON In his sermon Father Devaney told of the lack of religious instruction in the English controlled schools, and recounted Brother Rice's early diffi- culties, and then of the great vigor with which his ideals spread until his theories of education encompassed the world. EDMUND IGNATIUS RICE BENEFACTOR OF YOUTH The first centenary of the death of Edmund Ignatius Rice was an occasion which called for world-wide recognition, for the work which this great man initiated has developed to an unprece- dented degree. Brother Rice was the first to tackle seriously the problem of educa- tion of boys when the penal system in Ireland was coming to an end, and his heroic efforts in that cause have resulted in covering the earth with a network of efficient schools for Catholic young men. Faced with innumerable discouraging obstacles from the start, Brother Rice nevertheless labored tirelessly, and soon his efforts began to show results. The idea spread slowly at first, and then with increasing rapidity new schools sprang up steadily, first in Ireland, then in England and thence over the whole earth. Since the death of Edmund Rice, his order has constantly spread, ever cherishing his ideals, yet ever adapting itself to the changing tempo of the times. It cannot help but contribute powerfully to that Christianization of the world which is so widely accepted today as the solution to the world's chaotic condition. lO DURING THE YEAR LEO was honored to receive a visit trom some of the Leo ex-students contiiiuinig their studies for the priesthcod at St, Mary of the Lake Seminary, lvlundelein, BACK lrzhn McGuire '42, Robert Carroll '38, Robert Multhauf '42, Hugh Hayes '42. The Ciscans gather at Mercy High School each Tuesday afternoon to discuss the agenda for the city-wide meeting, held at De Paul University every Satur- day morning. Brother O'Hehir leads the Leo delegation to the downtown meet- ings, where religious problems are pro- posed and debated under the supervision of a Jesuit Father. Mercy High School was host to the fifty-second general meeting of Cisca on February 22, At this meeting Paul Somers, a Leo Junior, was elected Vice- President of the entire Cisca organiza- tion. Somers was formerly Secretary. REV. FRANCIS P. MCCARTIN, O.M.I, Hi'Il'i'i1t .ll'lIl.Yl1'l' Our annual retreat was this year conducted by Father Francis P. Mc- Cartin, O.M.l., on January 9, IO, and ll. The edifying, almost monastic silence that reigned throughout the halls of Leo during those three days of grace was eloquent testimony to the unction and inspiration of the retreat master's sermons. LEO STUDENTS MAKE ALL OUT MISSION EFFORT Regular collections for the Propagation of the Faith fund are made in all the reli- gion classes in the school. The students contribute cheerfully to the missions, realiz- ing full well the great work done by this, the most deserving of charities. Teach ye all nations was the divine command, and by donations to the Propaga- tion of the Faith the students are taking a direct part in spreading His word. The work done by our mission priests extends from deepest Africa to the far East. Even in our own country, there still exist isolated sec- tions badly in need of priests. During th Lenten season contributions to the missions are particularly stressed. Shown at the left is a group of cheerful freshmen making their daily contribution to the mission box. They are, left to right, David l-lafele, Ralph Wille, John Quin- lan, Bob Meade, James Lee, Ed- ward Schell, and Thomas Mc- Grath. Brother King, seated at the desk, has done extraordinarily well in securing contributions for the Propagation of the Faith. Topping the list of classes in the school for mission collections was lB, shown at the left. The names of these students are Dan Brady, Robert Brady, William Byrne, Benjamin Beazley, Paul Butler, Bill Cook, Dan Cleary, David Ducey, Richard Deuerling, Jim Engle, Joseph Egan, Robert Fruin, Maurice C-ullo, Edward Crany, Neal Craney, James Clee- son, Ray l-lollstein, Thomas Joyce, Clifford Loreth, Bob Lambird, Edward Mitchell, Willard O'Brien, Edward O'Malley, Theodore Pa- zure, Ciuenther Philipp, Martin Quinn, Edmund Rakowski, Don Sullivan, Richard Steinhauer, Peter Vandenorth, Edwin Wood, and Norbert Zakrzewski. Devotion to Blessed Virgin Favored By Student Body Our Blessed Lady commands a special reverence and devotion among Leo's students and faculty. Each spring, during the month of May, the members of each class erect their own May altars, and make a special effort to make them both beautiful and inspiring. The picture at the left shows three students pausing during a busy school dayl to ask Our Divine Saviour to send down upon them His guidance and help. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Freshman Year 1941-1942 I In September of 1941 Leo welcomed what was then the largest freshman enrollment in the history of the school. That the class of '45 was de- termned to make a go of o tnings from the start was evi dent when the names of 59 freshmen were included in tt.- ..,. . nor men for the first quarter. The Science Club, for the first year students ex- clusively, was organized by Brother Lyons with Bob Devane, Pat Barnes, Ed St. Ville, and Ed Eckel as officers of the club. We even had our own football cheers, and we practiced them diligently for two weeks preced- ing the Carmel game. Although Henry Babe Baronowski may have had more to do with the score than we did, Leo nevertheless thoroughly trounced Carmel, 34 to 7. That was the year Leo met Tilden in Soldier Field, defeating the public school champs 46 to 13. And on Sunday, December 7-but that is his- tory. A full realization of the meaning of war came only gradually, but in a short time the entire student body enthusiastically supported the first of several war bond campaigns and scrap drives conducted in the school. Along towards spring the bennies again got the jump on the rest of the students by enlistlng in the Navy plan for the construction of model airplanes, to be used in training Navy men in aircraft recognition. Under the supervision of Brother O'Quinn and Brother Lyons, a total of 240 scale models were completed and turned over to Navv officials. Scores of us proudly re- garded our bruised and scratched fingertips as mementos of a good iob well done, ' ure Year 1942-1943 ' In the fall of '42 Leo pro- duced one of the greatest high school football teams the citv had ever seen. Led by such stars as Bob Hanlon, Don Murphy. and Bob Kelly, the Lions found the Catholic League a pushover, and went on to crush Tilden for the sei V E 'ar in the Kelly Bowl, 27 to 14. The Christmas offering of the Dramatic Club was a one-act play, Our Lady's Tumbler, directed by Mr. Robert M. McKenna, and featur- ing Bud Donlon as the unlettered monk. The Dramatic Club also prepared two short plays for the Easter entertainment. The cast for the fea- ture play, Dress Reversal, included two soph- omores. Bud Donlon and Bob Devane. Four sophomores made the first string light- weight basketball team that season. You should remember Jack Carlson, Dick Kloser, Bob Koz- lowski, and Bart Murphy. Junior Year 1943-1944 Juniors! After two years of diligent work as scorned frosh and sophomores, we emerged upperclassmen. Six of our number made the first string Lions. At left end was Ray O'Donnellg at left tackle, Roy Hall, left guard, Don Simnick, right guard, Frank tackle, Jack Kopsheverg and at quarterback, Bob Kozlowski. The following April witnessed the most spec- tacular presentation ever put on by the Dramatic Club. Irvin Donlon, Walter Bronson, Bob Ma- honey, and Dan Norton were included in the cast of George F. Hummel's Broadway hit, The World Waits. In February Brother Croke, mod- erator of the Oriole, appointed Bob Devane Editor-in-Chief and Andrew Placco News Editor, while Joe Linehan continued as Feature Editor. The most outstanding school event of that spring was the announcement that Joseoh T. Gleason would succeed A. L. Whitey Cronin as Leo's football coach. g Senior Year 1944-1945 ' That Mr. Gleason was capa- ble of upholding the great tradition left by former Leo football teams was evident by the fact that Leo finished a strenuous league season with but one defeat, and that to a team that went on to the Kel- ly Bowl. ln a close, tight gan-, ,-. t Leo 6 to O, but later was van- quished by Tilden I3 to 7. The accelerated class graduated on January 22. This class consisted of thirty seniors who were placed in a special section in order that they might finish their high school courses before entering the armed forces. Included in the formidable line-up of the heavyweight basketball team of 1945 were Frank O'Grady, Martin Burns, Rav O'Donnell. Tom Nicholson, Bart Murohv, and Don McAuliffe. As for the lights. the fine teamwork of Bob Koz- lowski, Gene Flahertv, Bucko McGinnis, Dick Kloser, and Ted Moskal is something not easily forgotten. In February we elected our class officers. Joe Gump was voted President, Martin Burns Vice- President, Joe Heerwaeon Treasurer, and as Secretary, Jim Hannon. The second semester of our fourth year went by all too quickly. Class rings, diplomas, graduation, the yearbook and the senior prom-all these occupied our thoughts. We were the graduating class of 1945. We are faced with a world marked by the social, economic, and political scars of war. On our shoulders rests the responsibility of aiding in the restoration of peace and effecting the pre- vention of future national conflicts. With the help of God we will accomplish that task. Z THE ORIOLE l SCHOCL PAPER HAS ACTIVE YEAR For seventeen years Leo's school paper, the Oriole, has been one of the most appreciated and well-liked of the school's varied extra-curricular activities. Brother Croke, moderator of the Oriole, has had considerable experience with school publications, and under his direction the paper has achieved a popularity it has rarely, if ever, reached before. Edited by a capable, eager staff, it provides an accurate record of school events, together with feature articles and editorials, which combine to form an excellent, well-balanced newspaper. No recommendations are laid down for staff members, other than that they must be honor English students, and be interested in journalism. Most staff members begin in first year. and as they grow in experi- ence and abality, take over key positions on the staff. Due to war restrictions, the T9 number of issues published each ,y - is year has been cut down, but this T - tt is more than made up for by the - fact that superior quality is a re- sult of the longer time available for preparation of each edition. Brother Gaskie and Mr. Fahey succeeded Brother Lyons and Mr. McKenna as moderator and dramatic coach, respectively, of the group. Under their direction two outstanding plays were produced in the past year. The Mysterious Stranger, a one-act Christmas play, was presented on De- cember l9 and ZO. ln April the dramatic club outdid itself with the presentation of Lucifer's Lodge, an eerie hair-raiser in three acts. Three seniors and two juniors made up the cast of The Mysterious Stranger. The play was concerned with three down-and- outers who found their way back on Christmas Eve. Bud Donlon was cast in a difficult role, symbolizing the spirit of Christmas. Bob Hylard lent a comedy twist to the play as Bill Hos- i karts, a fuiiwiedged hobo. l As an illustration of the dra- BROTHER J. B. Such an arrangement gave more stu- dents who were dramatically inclined an opportunity to gain experience and display their talents. No less than four separate villains were involved in the Dlot. George Lagoni was cast as the wolf-man: Dan Norton was a cannibalistic old Ger- man. Dr. Lucifer, the sinister scientist about whose insanity the play re- volves, was played by George Chamberlain and Dan Truesdale. Art Zerega T took the part of Kuku, the head-hunting Jivaro Indian. Gleason. The Dragons scored first and converted to lead 7-0 at the half. Our score came in the third period with a pass from Borrelli to O'Don- Q 9 nell. McNulty converted to tie the game, 7-7. In their second game, the Lions were unable to cope with the veteran Til- den Blue Devils, suc- J' cumbing 25-0. The game seemed a walkaway at times, but the Orange and Black fought stead- fastly to the last minute of the game. ln their next game, against Loras, the Lions demonstrated a powerful scoring punch. ln the first quarter Don McAuliffe and Andy Gallagher tallied. The Day's scoring was closed by McAuliffe by a marker in the second and another in the third period. The final score was 26 to 6. LEAGU E CAM ES Leo 34 - Loyola 6 This opening league game gave promise of a good season for Leo. The Lions were wide-awake and hustling, profiting by all mistakes. A fumble and two pass interceptions accounted for three touchdowns. The first .gh J' I ...l. ,l,,i-.mlm vuwuw . T X-X marker came in the mid- l dle of the second-quar- A .0 1? fer, by Andy Gallagher 'K fl f after a 50 yard drive. Soon afterwards McGinnis raced L 60 yards on an inter- ll! I cepted pass for the second touchdown. Kozzie scored his in the fourth period on an end run for ten yards. A pass from ..yy ,Mg McAuliffe to lvlarsailes scored soon afterward, after a fumble recovered by Kurtz. The final score was on a second inter- cepted pass, by Jack Nagle. Leo 12 - Carmel 7 Our underdog Leo footballers gained ven- geance on the Caravan for the 6-6 tie of last year by trouncing them l2-7. Both of our tallies came in the first quarter by Don McAuliffe, on runs of 45 and 20 yards. Carmel was unable to over- come this lead, though they strove desperately. Their only score came on a pass from Mullins to Van Loon in the wild second quarter. The last half was a stymie, with neither team able to score. As in all Leo-Carmel games, the spirit was Tl explosive, the air tense, and the players keyed up. Leo 0 - Weber 6 The Lions entered this contest with their eyes on another championship, but were beaten by a tough, fighting Weber team. The Little Davids, led by l-lermie Miscowicz, thwarted our every effort. We showed little or no power until the third quarter, when we made our greatest threat, only to have this stopped on the thirty-five yard line. lt was a tough, bruising game, played for high stakes, with the winner taking South Sec- tion and All-Catholic honors. Leo 30 - Rita I3 The larruping Lions entered this game with revenge in their hearts, determined to wipe out last year's l2-6 setback. Our first score, a 40 yard jaunt by Bill Smith, came as a result of a pass interception by Frank Buttimer. Bill fm Borrelli matched this soon afterwards by a 39 yard run. A pass, Borrelli to lvlarsailes, set up Smith's s e c o n d marker, this time a run of 9 yards. -Rita's scores came in the second and third quar- ters, one by a blocked kick. The fourth quarter showed another surge of lethal Lion power, with two touchdowns being regis- tered by Charlie Hall, his first made possible by lVlcAuliffe's aerial to lvlarsailes on the l foot line. Leo I8 - Joliet I2 Still with hopes of taking the sectign Leo went all out to down the hard-fightingll-lill- toppers from Catholic Central, Joliet. The game fOllOwed the usual pattern with most of our scor- ing being done in the first period. Borrelli started thingsoff with a two yard plunge for 6 pomls' Cl'maX'rl8 a 45 yard drive. Shortly after- wards Bob Kozlowski scored on a pass from Mc- Auliffe. Joliet scored early in the third quarter at a result of a fumble which was quickly matched by a score by Don lvlmuliffe. Joliet closed the day's scoring with a 20 yard pass into the end zone. Leo 21 - De LaSalle 2 To close successfully their first season under coach Joe Gleason, the Lions took the measure of D.L.S. Zl -2. The first touchdown came in the first period when Don McAuliffe passed to Koz- lowski, who raced l2 yards for X the marker. Early in the second quarter Bill Smith scored the second touchdown on a l5 yard end run. Madden's kick was ' good, making the score l3-0. DeLaSalle's only score came just before the half when Don Mc- Auliffe was trapped behind the goal line for a safety. ln the third quarter, Kozlowski ran 72 yards for the last touchdown of the game. Our score was the result of a 75 yard run by Henry in the second quarter. The second half was a fruitless battle in which neither team was able to cross their opponents' 20 yard line. The next score came in the third quarter by Henry who converted again. Johnson scored in the fourth period from the two yard line. 82 HEAVYWEIGHT SQUAD Joseph Red Gleason after his first year of coaching at his alma mater may well be proud of his record. His first place senior basketball team is testimony to his ability. ln football also his team had an enviable record. He graduated from Leo in l932. playing basketball and football. From here he went to Notre Dame where he lettered in basketball, baseball and football, After graduating in i938 he took a coaching position at Central High, Hammond, Indiana. He went to DeLaSalle from his Hoosier post in l94l where he headed the basketball and football staffs. At DeLaSalle he produced fine teams with numerous outstanding athletes, All his teams are characterized by a doggedness and fighting spirit that are typical of himself. lt is our sincere hope that our teams will continue to hold the high position they now hold under our new mentor. The Lions met De La Salle in the league opener, and though they trailed most of the way, they finally won. 30-38, They next defeated Weber 35-31, However, luck then seemed to desert them, for with- out the services of O'Grady and Collins, they again bowed to St. Philip 47-32, and were edged out by St. George 34-33. They again got on the victory trail by defeating Carmel 34-28, and the following week defeated Joliet 24-2l to take undisputed lead in the south section, a lead they never relinquished. They overcame Loras 45-2l, and trampled Loyola 45-20, The Lions then sped through the second round without mishap. They easily overcame De La Salle 42-23, and beat Weber 4l-3l. They took a 34-28 decision from Carmel, overcame Joliet 42-30 to clinch their title, and then trounced Rita and Loyola by the respective scores of 50-35 and 56-27. On March l7 Leo met Calumet, and though Call took an early lead, the Lions came back to win 37-28. The Black and Orange entered as underdogs the title game with St. Philip. and though they lost 38-35, they turned in a creditable performance. The first quarter was fairly even, but Philip pulled away in the second and enioyed a 2l -l l lead at the half. The Lions bounced back in the third period, however, and tied the game up. Philip again took the lead in the closing minutes, and though the Lions fought valiantly, time ran out while they were still three points behind 85 THE LIGHTS--CHAMPIONS TED ag. 1 Q DICK KLOSER OB KOZLOWSK LIGHTWEIGHT SEASON'S RECORD Leo's Lights need no introduction. They overwhelmed Rita 63-l0 and Loyola 56-l8. The Lights coasted through the second round without too much trouble. They defeated De La Salle 38-27 and gained revenge by downing Weber easily 35-27. Carmel then took a 4l -l9 shellacking and though Joliet caused some worry Leo won out 28-3l. A 52-23 victory over Rita and a 64-24 decision over Loyola ended League play, after which Calumet was defeated 48-22. Leo was now tied with Weber for the South Section Title. ln the playoff game Leo gradually in- creased its early lead until the beginning of the 4th quarter when, by use of their familiar stalling game, they held a 6 point advantage to win 31-25. ln the Catholic Championship game Leo had a close call, beating St. Philip 30-28 after having started their 4th quarter stall while leading 28-20. ln the City playoffs Marshall, with a record of ll7 wins out of ll9 games, was favored to win and bounced off to a 7-2 lead. The Lions, however, soon deciphered lVlarshall's style of play and led l0-8 at the quarter, I9-l3 at the half and 30-20 at the third period. The l5,000 fans packing the Stadium applauded vigorously at the brilliant stalling game which lasted the whole 4th quarter to end the game 34-26, 86 RESERVES AND BANTAMS BACK1 Ray CaplIS. Both squads have enjoyed an enviable record this season ending a tough schedule with nine wins out of ten. The Reserves were led by Bagley and Skraby, the former hitting on long shots and the latter very effective on rebounds. As for the Band tams it goes unsaid that Don Strasser and Bob McCue were mighty potent. I SPEEDSTERS PRACTICE DAILY AT SHEWBRIDGE FIELD Until the last four years, which most of us seniors like to think of as the Golden Age in sports at Leo, track was considered by many students a minor sport. ln that short span of years the ability of the squad as a whole and some of its outstanding members in particular have done much to dispell these thoughts. The senior track team of this year is paced by such able athletes as Ray O'Donnell, Bob Kehoe, Bob Collar and Dick Wheatly. O'Donnell especially should be commended for his fine work. Among the more than promising junior trackers are Jack Greene, Frank McGuire, and Dan Henry. Our cinder teams compete with all of our south side rivals and some public league teams. Each year Leo is represented at the Loyola relays where invariably they succeed in upholding the high stand- ards of sportsmanship and fine athletic record of Leo. Comes the balmy spring weather that turns the poet's mind to other things our track teams are burning up the paths in preparation for the city meet. To place in this meet is the desire of all cinder stars. But to give credit where it is really due we must thank Brothers O'Quinn and Pilon for the long hours spent with the teams and the unselfish efforts of Merle X. SPECIAL DONORS The Editors of the I945 LION wish especially to express their gratitude to the friends of Leo listed below. War Pro- duction Board regulations dictated a sharp decrease in paper consumption which we decided to effect by dropping adver- tisements. Yet these friends, who ordinarily take a full page advertisement in the LION, without hesitation subscribed the full amount as an outright donation.
