Powm Docion NITALE THE CHRISTIA BROTHERS The congregation of the Irish Ilhristian Brothers was founded by Edmund Ignatius Rice in the city of Waterford, Ireland, in l802. For more than three hundred years the English penal laws had worked havoc with the Catholic Church in Ireland. Priests were executed. Catholic schools were closed, and thousands were martyred for the faith. For years Edmund Ignatius Rice. a wealthy, retired merchant watched the terrible condition of his people. and linally determined to give his life and energy to the work of Catholic Education. . Y l In H402 he ltuilt and equipped the first liliristiau Brothers school. and soon several young men, actu- ated lny this striking example of lfhrist-like charity. lnegged to join him in his work. Thus we have tht- lveginnings of the Congregation of the Irish Ifhris- tian Brothers. Eighteen years after its foundation the saintly Pope Pius YII raised the institute to the status of a religious congregation, and from that time on. it spread rapidly over the world.
