1805 Twenty srx years after our natron began thrrty srx years after the mcorporatron of Lenox as a town nox Academy, the first rnstrtutron of secondary rn structron rn Berkshrre County was erected on Marn Street Chartered to furnrsh academrc and classrcal educa tron to youth of both sexes the Academy held front rank among the country s srmrlar mstrtutrons Its founders were men notable for therr rntellrgence char acter and good mfluence who belreved rn educatron as a necessrty for the state as well as for the rndrvrdual Not only were the classrcs and mathematrcs taught but what IS of more worth truth and courtesy and love of home frrends country and God The teachers among whom were Levr Gleason a Stockbrrdge natrve and john Hotchkrn, founder of the Lenox Lrbrary Assocxatron took a personal rnterest rn the rndrvrdual capacrtres and needs of therr students who came from most every state of our unron and even beyond our natronal boundarres 1851 Mr Mathew H Buckham became prrncrpal of the Academy Mr Buckham was later chosen Presrdent of the Unrversrty of Vermont 1 866 In accordance wrth an act of the Massachusetts Legrslature the trustees of Lenox Academy gave the Town of Lenox a portron of therr annual rncome and the use of the Academy burldmg for the establrshment of a hrgh school under the supervrsron of the noted Latrn scholar Mr Harland H Ballard The I-hgh School removed 1ts headquarters to a new four room burldmg of xts own Thrs new bulld mg was afterwards enlarged to become the old Center School The Academy reopened wrth Dr Ballard as Preceptor who acted rn that capacrty unt1l 1886 when the Academy was drscontrnued as an rndepedent school because of competrtlon wrth the more generously sup ported academres and hugh schools 1892 The Hrgh School whrch had outgrown 1ts quarters rn the old Center School was agarn rnstalled rn the Academy burldrng wrth Mr Lyman M Rowland a W1 rams College graduate, as Prmcrpal The hrst grad uatron exercrses for a class of three grrls were held that year The salutatory address was delxvered rn Latrn 1893 The course of study lrsted three currrcula Latrn Screntrfic wrth emphasis on Latrn mathematics and scrence fzoology astronomy botany chemrstry and physrcsb Classrcal stressrng Latm and Greek Eng l1sh-emphasrs on Englrsh and French Bookkeeprng was taught m the wmter of the second year 1902 Puprls who mamtamed a general average of 90W rn therr studres were accorded the prrvrlege of entermg nd Oberlm on the prmcrpals certrflcate Alumnx Assocratron held rts first regular meetrng ln July and fifty four of the seventy seven graduates were present 1905 The Nmth grade was added to furnrsh a broader and deeper foundatron for puprls and to rarse the standard of the school 1909 On the twenty nrnth of November the puprls of Lenox H1 h School and therr three teachers moved rom the ca emy to occupy the present burldmg- whrch had just been completed 1917: Certrficatron prrvrlege was granted to Lenox Hrgh permrttrng graduates of approved standrng and char acter to enter Normal schools and colleges wxthout exammatron 1915 Frve regular courses of study were offered-Col lege Preparatory Techmcal Normal Preparatory Gen eral and Commercral Class Day Exercrses for Senlors were held for t e first trme 1917 Twenty out of fifty-or forty per cent of students graduatrng durmg the past two years-entered rnstxtu trons of hrgher learnrng 1919 A servrce flag was presented to Lenox Hrgh rn honor of the school s heroes of World War I 1921 Department of Educatron a ratrng whrch rt has always marntamed Elrmrnatron of nrnth grade brought about greatly rncreased enrollment rn Freshman Class 1924 Basketball team won Southern Berkshrre champr onsh1p rn a tre game wrth St Josephs of Prttsheld 19 4 A course rn educatxonal and vocatronal gurdance mtroduced for Freshmen 1935 As a result of the destructron of Center School by fire hrgh school students attended only a mormn sesston to enable elementary puprls to ut1l1ze the burld mg rn the afternoon 1956 Lenox Hrgh defeated Pxttsfield and Wrllramstown 1n Berkshrre County debates and held accordrng to pomts the best record of any school ln the county A course rn typrng offered for classrcal and scren ttflc senrors 198 Lenox Hrgh debatmg teams won over Prttsfield and Adams Hugh School rn county debates Le , . . . j - . . - . l I ' ' I . . h 1880 High School was placed in Class A by the State . . . 3 III. . 1940 The baseball team won the County Championship and was given a trip to New York by enthusiastic fans. 1944 Class of 1944 resented to Lenox High School an honor roll inscri ed with names of over 300 former members who were serving in the armed forces. 1946 Lenox High won the Southern Berkshire Baseball Championship and was invited to participate in the Western Massachusetts Scholastic tournament where it advanced to the Hnals by defeatin Pittsfield Hi h and Worcester Commerce. A t oug e eate y o yoke, enox was the smallest school in the history of the tt urnament to advance to the nals. 1948 A gymnasium, auditorium and new science and home economics rooms were added to the original building to provide much needed facilities. 1 949 On May 17, the dedication of the new addition took place. The school published a Handbook to aid pupil orientation. 1951 The National Audio-Visual Aids Association awarded the high school a certificate for outstanding achievement in the use of audio-visual aids. An auto driving course was introduced and for this program Mr. Lenges Bull presented the school with a new Chevrolet. Lenox High School inaugurated a One-Act Play Festival for Berkshire County Schools. One can say that Lenox High School is a successor to the old Academy since it has maintained the same ideals of training both for higher education and the immediate problems of life. Although the high school is not primarily a college preparatory, as was the old Academy, its graduates trained in the college prepara- tory, technical, commercial and general curricula have maintained high scholastic standards and have achieved honor for their Alma Mater in every kind of profes- sion and activity including law, religion, architecture, medicine, teaching, banking, business, technology, iournalism, areonautics, engineering, basketball, base- ball, music and art. ln the two World Vfars, Lenox High contributed a great deal in service, in training offered and in the large number of graduates who ioined the armed forces. We are proud of the blue stars and ghe gold stars on our honor rolls. This, then is Lenox High of yesterday and today. As for the school E tomorrow-may slTe grow in spirit, keep the faith and pass on a tradition better and more v'as transmitted to us.
