Follow Me . . . The 1987 Leadership Re- treat started off with a lot of excitement and led to a won- derful weekend, The group of about seventy-five people left LRC in two vans and a number of cars for Natahala Village in Southwest North Carolina. On the way the group experi- enced some difficulties. One car got lost and reportedly vis- ited three or four states before getting to the village, and one participant received a blow to the eye from her best friend while riding in the van. Aside from these accidents, all had a fun time arriving. After getting settled in cab- ins, the participants ate and played games to get to know each other better. The next day was the day all had wait- ed for — the voyage down the Natahala River. Armed with life jackets and paddles, they were broken into groups of five or six and given their ves- sels. Riding down the river they quickly learned to de- pend on and trust each other. Following the directions of the captain, the participants navi- gated rough water and scary falls. They took a break around lunchtime for a quick picnic and also sent one of the group ahead to scout out the rough water. The biggest fall near the end of the run was the ultimate challenge. Happi- ly, all survived it, though some went down backwards or sideways. Exhausted, they all re- turned to the cabins for show- ers and a quick nap. That night they came together once again for discussions and bonding activities. Sunday morning, the girls sang the traditional 1 want to linger song to the guys, and all went off to pack. After the weeks spent in Hickory, they still feel that special bond devel- oped in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Assembling a hot air balloon (right) takes quite a few hands. The final result (below) is spectacular. A Kaleidoscope Of Colors Imagine a huge multicolored canvas spread out across the quad. When filled with helium, it transforms into a means of transportation. During the Fall semester, Jerry Shaw, Cromer Center Director, had a brief balloon display at Lenoir-Rhyne to promote the Statesville Balloon Festival. In addition to the splash of color it added to the campus, everyone had the oppor- tunity to see, firsthand, a hot air balloon assembled from begin- ning to end. In Tune Rufus Harley is the world ' s first and only jazz bagpipe player. He puts an end to any belief that the bagpipe is just an instru- ment of the Scottish High- lands. Rufus brought his unique talents to Lenoir- Rhyne during Parent ' s Weekend this past Fall Se- mester. A captive audience enjoys listening to Rufus in the Bear ' s Lair as he demonstrates his own style of Jazz. Campus Life 27
