A It was the best of times! It was the trip to Puno, Peru made by 15 students and 6 fa- culty staff members. We left on May 13, 1986 to travel to a village high in the Andes mountains to build an elemen- tary school. We built the school from the foundation to the roof with our hands. We worked hand in hand with the Peruvians and made many long-lasting friends in the pro- cess. This school will stand long after we, the builders, are gone. It will stand not only as a place for children to learn their ABC ' s, but as a monu- ment to the best in humanity — the giving of oneself to make the world a better place The worst of the best? Get- ting used to cold showers, no electricity, and primitive bathroom facilities (if any). The best of the best? Experi- encing a new and different culture, building friendships that will last a lifetime, and making a lasting contribution to the world for the better- ment of mankind. — Nancy Semones Wonder what they are up to! The girls Almost there. Slowly but surely the in front of their apartment. school goes up. Busy as bees. The crew hard at work laying the brick for the new school. 20 Student Life

PROLOGUE . . . A TEP PDRWARO Freshmen students encounter many new names, new faces, and new beginnings as they enter the world of college life. To make them feel more at home, Lenoir-Rhyne offers an orienta- tion program at the beginning of the school year called Prologue. Prologue gives the students a chance to meet new friends and to get to know the campus better. The Prologue leaders are upperclass students who are interest- ed in the needs of their fellow students. They serve as guides and friends to the new freshmen. Some of the activities that were included in this year ' s Pro- logue consisted of: a movie, a dance, a scavenger hunt, a pizza party, a band concert, a beauty contest, a reception at President Trainer ' s house, and a trip to the ropes course. Mike Shakleford and Marty Blocker were student coordinators for this year ' s Prologue, and thirty-three upperclass students served as leaders. Live on stage — Dean Ed Lewis entertains students during a skit. This takes skill — These freshmen students seem to be getting off to a well-balanced start on the balance beam. 22 Student Life
