Buying sweaters is Paige Thomas and her mother. Parents Weekend is a great time for students to get their shopping done, since they can often get a little extra financial sup- port from Mom and Dad. After eating, Chris Porter and his dad pose for the camera. Parents usually sample our LR cooking during this weekend. Student Life 27

THE BEST OF TWO WORLDS PARENTS WEEKEND Welcome Parents!! met LR parents as they came on to campus September 27. The school plans a large agenda of things for parents and their children to do. Vacuum the floor! Dust the furniture! Make the beds! Clean the bathroom! Staighten the closets! The parents are coming! Yes, the day has arrived. You ' ve pre- pared for them and now they are here. Some of you saw them last month, but all of you are glad to see them again. Parents Day gives you a chance to in- troduce your Mom and Dad to your friends, professors, and new habits. (Such as the unmade bed, 3-week-old laundry and the empty beer can attempted to be hidden.) It also gives your parents a chance to squeeze your cheeks, check on your grades and make a last minute in- spection of your ring around the collar. But no matter how formal if may seem at first, the day provides everyone with a feeling of love and pride, from seeing their family once again. Shady Grove Band, a blue grass band, present- ed a bluegrass jamboree for the parents and students. With mother and father, Steve Richter smiles proudly. With the whole gang together, we have Pete Killam and his parents and Tim Ludwig with his parents. Tims father is Dr. David Ludwig, a psychology professor at LR. 26 Student Life

UP WHERE WE BELONG LEADERSHIP RETREAT Tomorrow ' s leaders pause momentarily to sa- vor the events of the past few days. You put your left foot in, you put your left foot out. You put your left foot in and you shake it all about. You do the hokey- pokey and you turn yourself around. THAT ' S WHAT IT ' S ALL ABOUT! (Clap!) (Clap!) . Well, that wasn ' t what all of it was about but it was a start. What was IT? IT was the 1985 Annual Leadership Development Retreat at Blow- ing Rock Assembly Grounds. IT was a week-end retreat that included members from almost every campus organization, various members of the staff, some facul- ty members and anyone else who was interested in leadership. IT all started when a group of seventy-two members of the Lenoir-Rhyne commnlty gathered in front of the Cromer Center on a cool Friday afternoon to take a trip up the mountain. For many, IT was something mysterious and unknown. For those of us who were veterans of the 1st or 2nd Annu- al Retreat, IT was a continuation of what has become one of the best experiences It looks as though more than one cuckoo flew over this nest as students present their skits. Surrounded by LR ' s finest, Nick, the leader for the weekend, enjoys his final hours. of our college career. What did we learn? We learned how to understand and handle various problems that arise In organizations. We learned how to listen and to communicate better We learned how to get more in touch with ourselves and each other. We learned that first impressions aren ' t al- ways right; that each of us is a unique and special person. In essence, we learned how to be better people as well as better leaders. What did we do? We went on hikes, we sat in front of the fireplace, we rolled the staff members ' cars with toilet tissue, we sang to the stars, we stayed up until 4.00 am writing Happy Grams to ecah other that said I love you , we enjoyed the view, we made new friendships, and strengthened old. We came away from the mountain de- termined to make the Lenoir-Rhyne com- munity a better place to live, work, and love. For those of us who attended this retreat IT has become a BEAR NECESSITY! Senior Eileen Goddard clowns around with Dr. Trainer, Nancy Scmones. and Tony Schaffer. 28 Student Life
